Police facing massive 116,000 personnel By Judd-Leonard Okafor | Publish Date: Nov 17 2016 3:00PM Inspector-general of police, Ibrahim Idris, says the Nigerian police needs additional 116,510 personnel to reach maximum strength to police the entire population. Speaking in Abuja at a dinner by the Alumni Association of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Idris said current police strength of 338,490 means there's only one police officer for every 537 Nigerians. The United Nations recommends a ratio of one police for every 400 civilians. Idris blamed the shortage in manpower on the lack of rank and file recruitment since 2010, insisting it had depleted capacity for community policing. Some 10,000 people are to join the police in the first-ever recruitment in more than five years. "In order to enhance the confidence and trust of the public, the current administration has decided to coopt the community and religious leaders, as well as civil society organisations, in the screening and vetting of prospective candidates into the Force," said Idris. He added that the coopting would ensure thorough vetting in "both character and merit." Police facing massive 116,000 personnel shortage dailytrust.com.ng

Speeddial:
The medical team of the Nigeria Police Force,
NPF, on Wednesday converged on Lagos
state to begin arrangements for the mental
evaluation exercise to be carried out on all
armed policemen.
The exercise is meant to assist in promoting
principles of people-oriented policing as
directed earlier this year by the then
Inspector-General.
It would be recalled that the Inspector-
General of Police, IGP, Solomon Arase had in
January, disclosed that the NPF was
considering conducting psychiatric test on
recruits and serving officers, stressing that
the Force would also consider the idea of a
Trauma Centre for its officers because of the
nature of their job.
The IGP had explained that the initiative
became necessary following incidents of
indiscriminate use of firearms by personnel of
the force.
The Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan, Lagos
state, on Wednesday said the test would be
done to maintain standards in the handling
of firearms, and police activities in Lagos and
Ogun states, the two states that Zone 2
covers.
In a statement made available to newsmen,
the Assistant Inspector-General for Zone 2,
CP Abdulmajid Ali, said, “The medical team
which arrived Lagos state from Abuja
comprised of experts and trained
psychiatrists from the police medical
department and the Melville Healthcare
Centre in Abuja.
“The team was led by the AIG Medical, Stella
Akintade.
“Units such as the Police Mobile Force and
the Special Anti-Robbery Squads, SARS, are
to attend a workshop which will mark the
beginning of the medical exercise,” the
statement added.
