Hello Guys,

On my last article on how to file for a divorce legally in Nigeria, some folks thought I was advocating for divorce but that is not really correct. Trust me, there are people out there facing a lot of problems in their relationships and marriages, so I only offer a little assistance on how they can leave such toxic marriages legally.

So today, I'm here with some steps you can take in order to fix an unhealthy relationship. This is not a guarantee but following these steps given increase your chance in changing the status of your relationship for good.

Relationships are very important aspects of your lives. One of the easiest ways to more productive and happier is when you have strong connections with your loved ones, family, friends, or even colleagues at work.
It is important to know that as good as relationships are, they don’t always come as easy as they seem because you may sometimes be required to put in considerable amounts of effort to make them work.

There are times your strongest connections will break leaving you lonely, unsure, and disappointed. Other times, the relationships may not even be giving you the right vibes you wish for or not meeting with your expectation.

Good news! There are steps you could take in order to fix that unhealthy relationship you are into right now. It could be a relationship with your lover, friends, family member, co-worker, neighbor, or anybody at all.

Before we look into the steps to take in order to fix your unhealthy relationships, let's quickly take a look at what defines a good relationship. You will know your relationship is not healthy when you discover you lack some of the following.

How to know a good relationship.
There are different types of relationships as one relationship may be different from the other. However, there are some basic requirements used in measuring and knowing when relationships are still healthy and the connections are still strong.

Let’s take a look at some of the signs of good relationships.

1. Trust
One of the essential ingredients necessary for building a very strong connection in a relationship is trust. Without trust, relationships are likely to become toxic and may not be able to survive for a long time.

2. Good communication
A good relationship will become better when there is proper communication. Being able to communicate with loved ones will allow you to connect more as there is no better way to know how your partner, family, or friend is feeling than when you talk about it.

3. Mutual Respect
In order to maintain a good relationship with another person, there is a need to have mutual respect and understanding of each other’s needs and values. It’s also good to understand and respect each other’s opinions in matters that concern both of you.

4. Mindfulness
When you are still mindful of what you say or do to the other person, know that your relationship with that person is still good. It is important that you don’t let your negative emotion affect others.

When your relationship lacks the attributes mentioned above, know that the relationship is getting worse and you need to save it before it becomes worse.

Steps to take to fix an unhealthy relationship.

Step 1: Communicate with your partner
As common as this line sounds, many people still skip this very important part of fixing their relationships.

Even when you advise them to communicate with their partners, you will hear responses like: I’ve tried but he/she is not listening, I’ve talked about this a thousand times with him/her, I know speaking to him/her about this is not a good idea, so no need.

One thing you fail to understand is that communication is not all about talking alone, it involves listening too. It is usually difficult for us to listen as we always feel we are right.

In order to fix your unhealthy relationship, true communication must begin. These must involve both talking and also listening.

Now since the essence of this communication process is to fix your unhealthy relationship, there will be a need to improve your communication pattern. You can take a cue below.

1. Figure out the communication pattern of your partner: communication is all about using the best method to get your point known. You need to figure out the best way to communicate with him/her. You could make use of text messages, WhatsApp messages, or telephone calls. You should also know the best time to bring up conversations. It should be mostly when the atmosphere is calm and the tension is down.

2. No need to play the blame game: You are supposed to discuss the issue and not point accusing fingers at each other. The essence of the discussion is not to blame who is wrong and praise who is right. It is all about knowing the issue, learn from it, and ensure it doesn’t happen again.

3. Make gestures when talking: There is nothing more comforting to putting your hands on their shoulders when talking things through. This is a way of reassuring them that you enjoy their company and you want the issue to be resolved ASAP. No matter how difficult the situation is, try to get close and attempt to hold hands. Let them know that although things are rough at the moment, you still care.

4. Use a different approach: It is a popular saying that “you cannot be doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result” if talking doesn't work, try getting him/her gifts or suggesting that you go out on a date or a relaxation spot to discuss.

5. You should remain open: Never come with the mindset that you are the right one while they are the wrong ones. Once you have made your feelings known, you should become open to the other person’s response. Try to understand your partner's point of view, even when you don’t agree with it, try to express yourself in a pleasant way. Relationships sometimes are all about compromise.

Step 2: Detect the Issue(s)

The whole essence of the communication process is to know what exactly the issue is and the only way you can achieve this is when you have an honest and productive discussion.

It will be difficult to fix an unhealthy relationship when you do not even know the cause of it in the first place.

You should know that different problems have different ways of solving them. Once the problem is detected, then you are already halfway into solving it. All you need to do is to know the best approach to use in solving that particular problem.

For any problem you have detected, you can easily put out a comment as we try to give you a possible resolution.

Step 3: Seek Help

Although involving a third party in your relationship problems may not be a good idea, sometimes there are things that are beyond your control and you just need to involve another person.

It is advisable that you involve a more mature and experienced third party in order to avoid making the situation go from bad to worse. If possible, you could also seek the help of a professional to help you sort things out.

Conclusion

In all, you need to understand that communication is the sure key to fixing your unhealthy relationship. Try to have a very productive communication with them so that you can be able to know the next step to take in fixing whatever issue you are having.

It is essential you know that some unhealthy relationships may go way beyond fixing especially in relationships that involve abuses of any kind

In this case, after making one or two attempts to fix the relationship and it doesn't work, you could try to talk to someone you trust about it or make necessary plans to separate yourself from such a relationship. This is important for your sanity.

Keeping yourself in any toxic or violent relationship is not good for you and it will affect you both physically and mentally. In the case of toxic marriages, you can seek a divorce legally.

You may be among the millions of people that wish to start another fitness plan. With such a plan, there is a need for you to put in some commitment s that will ensure you achieve the required goal.

You may not have been engaged in any fitness program either for a few months or a year but there are some things you will need to remember before you embark on the new journey of an exercise program.

Make sure to remember the following things so that you will not get fed up with the new fitness program or worse still get the wrong result at the end of the program.

Here are some things you will need to remember before you start a new fitness program.

1. Remember you are not as athletic as you used to be
The first thing to remember is that you are not as athletic as you were 10 to 30 years back. You don’t have that strength and energy you used to have when you were younger.

You should remember that as a teenager, your body is still developing and surges with hormones that make you adapt and even recover easily from the harshest type of training or exercise. At that time, you may think you are following the best fitness program but the truth is that your body could adapt to any kind of training. So, you should remember that what worked and produced results back then may not work now but may even just make things work.

You should start only programs that your body can adapt easily. For those above 50 years of age, light exercises are recommended and the body should not be subjected to too much stress.

2. Remember that not starting any fitness program at all is better than doing it wrongly
It is better not to do any exercise or fitness program than to start a wrong one. When you do wrong fitness program, instead of you being fit, your body will be stressed out.

It is important to apply the right techniques when engaging in a fitness program because without which, the result will just be fatal. When doing an exercise, your muscles should be coordinated else it will lead to strain and other pains.

Watching fitness programs and following them may not always be the best idea because it is not every move the trainer does that you can catch.

It is recommended to start a fitness program with fitness personnel so that he can tell you the right techniques to use. Only start a fitness program only if you are an expert else let a professional handle it for you.

3. Remember your body changes when you challenge it not punish it
When you start a new fitness program after a long time, you should start with light exercise so as to creating the necessary changes. Starting with serious exercises will expose you to the risk of getting injured.

You will only be punishing your body if you engage in strenuous exercise when starting a fitness program because it may lead to the breakdown of your body.

Ensure you start with mild exercises. When your body starts to adapt to the exercise, you can then increase the tempo but always use only a little effort for your exercises.

4. Remember Exercise is just a stimulus. What changes the body is good to rest and healthy food
Starting a fitness program is one of the steps of being fit and healthy and not the only step. Eating the right food and having sufficient rests are what make the body fresh, strong, fit, and healthy.

There is a need to eat healthy food and have adequate rest after each exercise or training session so that you and be able to recover from the last training session and prepare for the next one.

When you don’t rest adequately, you may fall sick or even wear out because the stress will be much and you may end up not getting to achieve your desired goal.

5. Remember that a fitness program should be taken gradually
You should see the process of getting fit as a marathon race and not a sprint race. Patience is a virtue you must possess when you want to start a fitness program.

Don’t always expect to get the required result of the fitness program instantly. It is a gradual process. Most fitness programs are meant to be engaged in for months or even years before the goal is achieved.

Remember you can’t lose or gain weight overnight; neither can you gain muscles overnight. It comes gradually and with consistency.

Marriage can be seen as a legal agreement between a man and a woman to become husband and wife. Marriage is an institution that is supported by social and religious groups in Nigeria. It is meant to foster a long-lasting relationship between a man and a woman who intends to become married.

However, if for one reason or the other, things are not working according to plan and there is a change of heart from either the man or the woman, he/she may file for a divorce.

Before the issue of divorce sets in, the man and the woman should use all available means to try to come to a common understanding as divorce should be considered as a last resort.

Legal Meaning of Divorce
Divorce can be defined as the termination of a marital union, the organizing and/or canceling of the legal duties and responsibility of marriage, thus dissolving the bonds of matrimony between a man and a woman who are married under the rule of law of a particular state.

Filling for divorce in Nigeria can be stressful: affecting living arrangements, finances, resources, schedules, and household jobs. However, it is better to know more about how to get a divorce in Nigeria before you file for it.

It is also important you get to know different disputes resolutions in Nigeria that can intervene on matrimonial matters, to see if the marriage can still work and divorce should only be the last resort.

However, if you must consider the option of a divorce, there are things you need to know before you begin the process.

Grounds for Divorce
There is only one ground subject to the provisions of the Acts on which a court is entitled to dissolve a marriage. That the marriage has broken down irretrievably. However, subject to the provision of section 15(2) (a)-(h) of the Act, there are 8 various classes of breakdown which can lead to the termination of a marriage, they are:

a. When a party has willfully and persistently refused to have sexual intercourse with the other party despite a number of requests.

b. When the petitioner finds it intolerable to live with the respondent after the respondent has reportedly committed adultery.

c. That since the marriage, the respondent has behaved in such a way that the petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to live with the respondent due to cases like domestic violence, drunkenness, sodomy, etc.

d. Since the respondent has left or abandoned the petitioner for a continuous period of at least one year immediately preceding the presentation of the petition.

e. That both parties have lived apart for a continuous period of at least two years immediately preceding the presentation of the petition.

f. That both parties have lived apart for a continuous period of at least 3 years immediately preceding the presentation of the petition.

g. That both parties have, for a period of not less than 1 year failed to comply with restitution of conjugal rights made under the Act of the law.

h. That the other party has been absent from the petitioner for a long period of time and in a circumstance that provides reasonable grounds for presuming that the other party is dead

Steps to file for a divorce in Nigeria
Step 1
The first step for filing for divorce in Nigeria is to get a good lawyer with experience in Family law and counsel. There are many law firms where you can get competent lawyers. You need to get one to represent you in court.

Step 2
You must understand that the divorce process depends on the type of marriage you have. If your marriage was formalized by registration, that is to mean you have a marriage license from a marriage registry. This type of marriage can be easily dissolved by the court because it was joined by the court.

Step 3
The next step is for you to consider under which ground you wish to file the divorce. There are certain grounds as discussed above which can be used to dissolve a marriage. When you are certain that the reason for your divorce fits into one or more of the grounds above and you have sufficient proves, you can then proceed to the next step.

Step 4
Before you file for a petition, you should try to consider some things that the outcome of the divorce might affect. These include;

• Who will have custody of the children should be one of the things you should consider. You need to decide if you want to take full custody of the children or if it will be shared.

• Will your partner pay for the upkeep of the children?

• How will the properties be shared?

However, with a good lawyer, the above can be sorted out easily because the lawyer should be able to provide good counsel and possible solutions on these matters. You can then proceed to file for the divorce once all the issues have been settled.

Step 5
At this stage, the divorce process commences officially as your lawyer files what is known as a petition of divorce in the high court. The lawyer files and drafts all necessary documents such that your petition must be filed in a professional and logical manner.

Step 6
Your petition will be given a file number in the family court division once your petition has been filled successfully. Your partner will be given a certain number of days to respond to the petition. He/she is given the right to either agree or disagree to dissolve the marriage.

Step 7
The court will then hear the case in an open court once your partner responds to the petition. At this point, witnesses (if there are) will be called to validate any evidence presented in the court.

Step 8
The judge will grant a divorce if he/she is satisfied that a divorce should be granted. The court then grants what is known as ‘decree nisi’ which means the marriage should be dissolved. Then the decree nisi will become ‘decree absolute’ after 3 months. This means you are now single again.

Note that the judge has the right to grant settlement however he dims it fit. He also has the right to share the properties among the partners or grant child custody to any of them. It all depends on how the petition is filed.

Conclusion
Now that you are aware of the legal way to file for a divorce, it is important you follow the procedure mentioned in this article so that you do not take laws into your own hands.
