Many manuals you’d read on making a sale are volumes of rules that convolutes the science of sales making at best. They concoct conclusions from academic research in psychology and sociology; rapidly dishing them out to you in contexts you might not easily find applicable. What’s daunting about the information in these sales’ bibles is the number of things they say you must change if you are going to get better profits. The list of behavioral modification seem endless and in turn cripples your interest in them. The authors of these books are doubtlessly sales’ experts who surprisingly cannot soundly sell their insights to the average man. (List Your Business On TrustOrRun Nigeria) I’m of the opinion making great sales isn’t rocket science. And though it requires a few learning here and there, you don’t need up to a hundred nuggets and series of complexly-named concepts drilled in your head to be great at selling. It seems certain you’re reading this piece because you have sold something before and even though you might have been good at it, you want to be better. Alternatively, your recent selling experience may have turned sour and you’re looking for what works. You will not find every magic potion for great sales in here. The startling truth is that you don’t need every sales magic pill to make amazing sales. You need a good sip of a small number of universal rules that govern great selling and a large opportunity to find what extra you can creatively add to how you sell. (Learn How To Understand Your Customers On TrustOrRun Nigeria) That extra you will find, easily appeals to you, and then becomes simpler to apply. Our focus is on the universal rules. They are few but concrete. Here they are: The 5 mind-blowing tips on how to increase sales. 1) PRESENTATION: There is conflicting research on when humans make up their minds about a person. Some say it is in the first four seconds, a few say ten and others put the time-frame at thirty seconds. These lengths of time only amplify the fact that we quickly form our opinion about a person, a concept or a thing at first sight. So, you want to look your best at sales. It does involve you smiling a bit more, having good clothes on and deliberately making your colors match. These not only improve your confidence, it improves the confidence of your customers in you. Remember to dress like the general understanding of your product. You don’t want to make sales in tennis balls and dress in a 3-piece suit! How you look must be in sync with the products you sell. If you are convinced they are quality, dress to depict so. Presentation does impact on how you speak also. Your fluency persuades your buyers you are an expert at what you sell. 2) PACKAGING: This pretty much affects what you sell, not necessarily who you are. If what you sell is you, digest ‘presentation’ a bit more. However, most people sell goods and services and how it is rendered matters too much. Appetite to buying goods have been found to be easily stimulated by how they look. This is why people work intensely on aesthetics. Designs don’t come readily to some people. Give the job out to someone who easily can do that. Many times, the choice to customize your goods for clients makes them more sellable because the customer feels an ownership of it already. 3) PROMPTNESS: If you had great skill, invaluable service, but it comes at the time the client has found an alternative, it is a good as useless. The time of need of your customer is the backbone of your profits. You don’t joke with time, when your clients need your services. Delivering on time eliminates the chance that allows your clients to consider an alternative—consequently comparing you with a sister company. No, you can’t afford that luxury. 4) PROACTIVITY: This is the art of anticipating your consumer’s needs and fulfilling them. It’s a rule: Client’s are too lazy going up and down to get all their needs met. If they can get it all in a place, why not? Moreover, the chances you get clients chronically stuck to another brand is as low as 10-20 percent. What do you do with the remaining 80% of clients who are not stuck yet? Survey what matters most to them and provide it. If it is out of the scope of your company to sell those needs, outsource it! You are looking for every chance to be the one who meets your customers need. Whether it is for the extra you provide, or for the main thrust of your business—their continual need to come etches your business on their minds more indelibly. 5) PASSION: In all you do in sales, it must be felt that you genuinely care. It reflects in how you persuade your clients. Trust me, every client knows whether you care just to make more profit out of them or you care about their well-being. Maintaining a communication with them beyond what they buy from you seals their allegiance to you and your product. I know it is easy to think it makes no difference since the marketplace is an open system with too many kinds of customers rushing in and out sampling opinions. Your passion is likely the very reason they’ll stay, patronizing you. Let's have an example: Company A: This car costs N 1.4 million. It is a V-8 engine with 324 horsepower generating a torque of blah blah. It races from 0-60km/hr in just 10 seconds! Company B: What car are you looking for? You strike me as someone who loves racing. Let me show you this piece of beauty that just suits you! It is a V-8 engine with 328 horsepower generating an incredible torque of blah blah. It gets you from 0-60km/hr in 10 seconds! Your race-loving friends would trade anything for a ride in this with you. You could even have a test-drive today. After the drive, then you can discuss the price. I’m sure you can tell which company is nearer to making the sale. Why Building a 5-star Reputation Should Be Your Number One Goal! ![]() Well, if you are like madam kofo who sells vegetables and tomatoes right at the gate leading to my street, you probably don’t need a 5-star reputation to win new customers. Who cares, right? It’s not the same for you and you know it. You are a caterer and your desire is that your customers should recommend you to their friends. Perhaps, you are a stand-up comedian, Dj or Mc and you are dying for the world to know that “you make the party rock”. It doesn’t matter what industry you are in or how you conduct your business, you want your customers to spread mostly positive news about your personality or your business. Bad reputation is bad news. FIFA can as well confirm this. The truth is that customers are constantly on the lookout for businesses that can be trusted and what better avenue to decide on such businesses than consulting customer review sites to see what real people have to say about listed businesses. When a potential customer comes across unhappy reviews about the kind of service previous customers received while transacting with your business, you can as well say “Adios”. Unfortunately, you (the business owner) may not get to physically access the EXTENT OF DAMAGE caused by negative reviews because you don’t have a ‘face to face’ rejection experience. Your competitors, on the other hand, are probably squeezing the juice out of your potential customers because they understand how positive reviews and referrals work. A 5 Star Reputation means everything online. What is a 5-star REPUTATION? It simply means that this guy is great; this organization knows how to treat their customers right; this business can be trusted; this company keeps to their promises; I will love to do business with you again; and lots more. Believe me, you don’t want a 1-star reputation. Building a 5 STAR REPUTATION online is VITAL for the success of your company or any business in particular. Building a 5-star reputation should be your number one goal. So WHY is this? 1) Positive reviews are the single biggest indicator of customer satisfaction: Customers are your walking advertisement. They offer this service without royalty. Just make them happy. With a digital device at their disposal, they will share with the world how uniquely you conduct your business. Platforms like TrustOrRun( trustorrun.com ) and Nairaland are open channels for writing reviews. However, unhappy customers don’t write positive reviews. By keeping your customers happy, they will gladly reward you with a 5-star rating. Consequently, potential customers who are seeking reliable products and services for purchase will check out your business first. A business with mostly positive online reviews is a safe haven for new and potential customers. The key is to understand how your stakeholders are likely to reach out to you and then make sure that experience goes smoothly and, whenever possible, goes beyond the experience they expected. 2) Your business revolves around people: Sleep on it. It’s not about your product, portfolio, title or industry. What matters the most are people. Without them, there is no job. Without customers, you go hungry. No buyers, no sales. So you have to keep them coming in their numbers and the only language they understand is “Trust”. How can they trust you without a prior encounter? Simple, by hearing what others have to say about you. What happens when they have had a first-hand experience with you? They tell others about you, whether positive or negative. People and more people. No escape for you. The sooner you realize the better. 3) Competition is fierce: Rule of thumb; you are not the only one out there. The term monopoly is almost extinct. There are many businesses that offer similar products and services like yours. This implies that you need to fasten your waist belt to get noticed before your competitors. In most cases, earning yourself the generous praise of your customers often only takes being better than your competitors. Beating your competitors in the price war doesn’t necessarily guarantee good turn ups. Equally important is your quality of service and level of professionalism. These are the thread on which your reputation hangs. As long as customers continue to trust you above your competitors, your reputation for excellence will speak for you. 4) It’s a win-win for everyone: It is as simple as it comes. With a 5-star reputation, you get more recommendations. It is your job to live up to your reputation every time you have to attend to a new customer. Practicing this will build your positive reputation even further. Your customers are happy and you are also happy. At the end, you discover that you have built a network of happy customers around your business. This can only mean one thing- Check your bank account. Chapter 1. ‘Time of death 3:12 am’, a male voice broke the silence in the room. She had lost too much blood, being in labor for too long. The tension was thick in the operating theatre. We knew the chance of her survival was slim, but we held on to hope. She had been given an overdose of oxytocin by a nurse at a maternity home. Her uterus had ruptured and her baby was long dead, even before she died. It was a male child. Blood was everywhere. Long has been my nights of late. I wake up in the middle of the night with questions I have no answers to. ‘What would be enough?’ ‘When would I stop searching?’ Lately nothing seems to be enough and some days, it all seems to be too much. I think it all dates back to Claire’s birthday. That was last month. It was supposed to be her 25th birthday. Claire was my best friend. She was the one person I admired and envied. Claire would laugh at things that usually would make me cry. She floated through this world without care and conquered it with her big heart. She knew she was going to die early and maybe I knew too, but nothing could have prepared me for it. ‘I’ve got sickle cell anemia, Joan. How long do you think I would last? Death isn’t such a bad thing. It just means I wouldn’t have to see you sob on my bed anytime I’ve got crises’, Claire had said to me once. Sometimes I wonder if she was ever afraid. If she did, well, she never revealed it. Why does death remind us of life? Seeing the lifeless body of this patient who had ruptured her uterus earlier today has caused me to sink deeper into my misery. I know I’m a Doctor and I’m not supposed to show my emotions but not today. I’ve being too strong and today I miss being human. ‘Oloriburuku ni e o!’ The angry cries of a commercial motorcyclist, as he sped past my Toyota Highlander, brought my mind back to the present. I didn’t realize the green light had come on. Mokola has become too busy and increasingly filled with cars. It wasn’t always this busy. I miss the good old days. ‘Not now, please. I can’t talk to you now’, she said to herself while staring at her buzzing phone. Akin has been calling all day. I can’t talk to him, at least not now. ‘Akin, my one and only Akin.’ I chose to date him because he was too charming to let go of and he hardly got angry. After a year of dating him, I miss imperfection. He was too perfect. He said ‘yes’ to almost every request I made. I miss the beauty of imperfection, the fun of arguing and quarrelling. Sometimes I feel guilt when I think like this, but not today. Today I need to feel alive. Today I need to forget. Today I need to remember. Today I need Chinonso. |
The only reason you have a job is because you have customers. Excellent customer service is a strange term in many local businesses in Nigeria. Many business owners have not come to the understanding that the only reason they have a job in the first place is because of their customers. Exchange of verbal & physical combos between both parties is commonplace in the business world of Nigeria. I once dropped a bottle of coke in a restaurant. As the bottle shattered and spilled its content right in front of me, I could feel the angry stare of the waitress slashing my neck through the jugular. A few minutes later, she walked into the restaurant’s store room and returned with a broom & parker to clear my mess. I was wrong. She dropped the broom & parker by my side and said, “when you are done, the bottle is 50 Naira”. A thousand thoughts raced through my mind. The mildest of which was to hang the waitress. This resource features insights on how to make your customer service stand out of the crowd. Unlike the excerpt from my friends narrative above, you will discover in this post, 7 great ways to wow your customers. Don’t ever forget that the customer is always right. Join me on this beautiful adventure. 1. A Simple Thank You I never forget to receive my share of the “ Thank you for banking with Us” at the security post of Access Bank. I always expect it. I always wait for it. I always get it. I used to have a lot of issues with my bank. They were slow, deducted my money anyhow & a whole bunch of complaints. Suddenly, I was there one Monday, and I was welcomed by the gatemen at his post, the security man at the door and the cashier at the desk. “Welcome to Access Bank”. That was the turning point for me. It’s either they stopped giving me those initial problems or I simply didn’t care again. That is the culture of business that should be embraced. What’s the lesson? Learn to welcome your customers to your company (using your company name. e.g. Welcome to “Kings place”) and remember to say a big “Thank you” when they are leaving. 2. Send a note, text message or email You are probably right, no time for any of these. Unfortunately, there is another business owner who’s got the time. That is, my dry cleaner. Yes, my dry cleaner sends notes, jokes, thank you messages and service change notification to my phone. In these times of BBM, Whatsapp, Facebook and the likes, you can communicate with your customers at almost no cost. You can give it a try and check out if they return to your business. While at it, go old school. Give a hand-written note that says thank you or even a greetings card. That customer will surely not come alone at the next visit. 3. Ask, ’’how can we serve you better?’’ I don’t mean a suggestion box hanging on the wall and no one uses. Walk to your customer at a convenient time. Exchange pleasantries all over again. Then pop the question. Many customers won’t even have an answer. Some will just smile and keep smiling. But guess what, you just left your mark. However, expect an answer. That’s better for business. You learn. Make sure you listen without interruptions. Most importantly, when the change is effected, inform your customer of the implementation with a thank you attitude. 4. keep the wait worthwhile What they do while waiting counts. This is especially for businesses where customers have to stand in line & wait for their turn. What your customers do while waiting is essential to how you will be remembered. As an example, if you run a hairdresser salon, celebrity & style magazines should be all over the place. A good music in the background isn’t bad too. When customers are bored while waiting, they tend to fix another appointment. The problem is simple: some never return. Install a television set when you can, play music, & offer them clean water when you can. In business, not everything is for sale. You don’t have to sell that cold pure water as well. Gift it out to thirsty customers while the wait for you. That is how to get remembered. Follow the link to get more: http://www.trustorrun.com/7-great-ways-to-wow-your-customers/ |
