The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Central
Naval Command (CNC), Rear Adm. Bello Al-
hassan, on Tuesday said the Navy had
deployed seven ships and 37 patrol boats for
martime security drill in the Niger Delta


Al-hassan told the News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN) at the Federal Ocean Terminal, Onne,
that the command had commenced a sea/
backwater exercise code named:
‘Octopusgrip’ in Onne, Rivers.


He said the exercise would give the
participating ships and crew a great
opportunity to showcase their professional
capacity in securing the maritime
environment within the Command’s Area of
Responsibility. According to him, the sea-based operation is
to enhance the combat readiness of the
troops which commenced on Monday and will
last for three days. The FOC said the objective of the exercise
was to consolidate on the gains of
“Operation Rivers Sweep” that was
launched in January. He said the earlier operation had reduced
crude oil theft and other maritime illegalities,
which caused high degree of insecurity of
lives and property in the Niger Delta region. “All ship companies are therefore, urged to
put their professional skills into practice, as
the ships are flagged off to achieve the
objective of the exercise. “Let me remind the general public,
particularly the seafarers within the Central
Naval Command, that the security of lives
and property is key in the conduct of this
exercise. “I solicit for your continuous cooperation
and support as the CNC set to achieve one of
the constitutional mandates of the Nigeria
Navy, which is to ensure security within the
maritime domain,” he said. The Officer in Charge of the exercise,
Commodore Habib Usman, said the operation
was to assess the readiness of CNC fleet and
bases as well as to test the practical skills of
personnel in tackling maritime threats. He said the exercise was in two phases: The
Riverine Operation and the Sea Exercise,
planned to run concurrently.

non-Nigerians alike. It has become a nagging issue demanding the
collective efforts of every Nigeria to tackle.
The criminal act portrays Nigeria as a
country that is incapable of confronting head-
on, an issue that has become a big problem.
Nigerians who embrace this anti-human act find it difficult to quit because they are of the
perception that those in the corridors of
power lack the will power to curtail the
criminal act through legislation. This is
because the Nigerian government is
yet to take the bull by the horns in finding a lasting panacea to the menace. Once the
government comes out with a stiff
action against this cruel practice, the mindset
of seeing the trade as a goldmine would be
checked. Some factors have been identified
as motivating the drive for kidnapping Among
these is the urge to acquire wealth
through illegal means. This inordinate
ambition for material wealth is not
unconnected with our nosediving value
system. The importance that society attaches to riches and mundane things is perverse. I
am, therefore, of the opinion that
kidnapping can be contained only if the needs
of the youths are addressed, particularly the
creation of jobs and the establishment of
vocational centres for the unlettered youths. Cottage industries should be established in
the rural areas to prevent migration of the
youths to urban centres where they could be
lured into vices like kidnapping. The Nigerian
government should also
implement the anti-kidnapping laws. The three tiers of government especially the
Federal Government, should also embark on
public enlightenment campaigns on the need

statement issued on Sunday, October 29 in
Abuja. Obasi said the matter was embarrassing to
the nation and suspension of those involved
would ensure that the scandal is adequately
probed

He said: “Just recently, a mind-boggling
revelation was made of how Maina was
smuggled back to the civil service after
almost five years of absconding.

“The elevation of Maina from Deputy
Director to Director with evidence of official
exchange of correspondence amongst
government officials is nothing but attempt to
ridicule the public image and psyche of
Nigerians and the civil service system. “As advocates of sane and corrupt-free
Nigeria, we make bold to ask President
Muhammadu Buhari to swiftly suspend all
heads of commission, extra-ministerial
departments and ministries involved in this
sour saga. “The Head of Service of the Federation, and
the Chairman of Federal Civil Service
Commission deserve nothing but immediate
suspension from office and probe for
allowing themselves to be caught in this web
of professional misconduct.’’

Vanguard quoted Obasi as adding: “We
insist that same measures taken by the
presidency in the cases involving the
suspended Secretary to the Government of
the Federation and the Director-General of
the National Intelligence Agency be meted out to everyone involved in `Mainagate’. “This case should be diligently probed and
prosecuted and the report should not be
swept under the carpet. “To this end, we hereby issue a seven-day
ultimatum to the Federal Government to act
and do so with the highest sense of sincerity
regardless of those involved and their
closeness to the corridors of power.”

ANCHOR Insurance Company Limited has
declared a dividend payment of N3.60 per
share for the year ended 2016. The dividend
payment, which was ratified by the
shareholders at the 27th Annual General
Meeting (AGM) of the company held at Le- Meridien Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort, Uyo,
Akwa Ibom State, weekend, followed the
appointment of four new directors into its
board.

The new directors are Barr. Christopher
Attah, Mrs. Comfort Enwang, Mr. Linus Nkan
and Barr. Aniekan Akpan. The N3.60 pay-out
per share represents 12 per cent growth in
dividend, following the impressive
performance of the company in the out-gone year. Chairman, Board of Directors of the company,
Dr. Elijah Akpan in his welcome address
expressed a heart-warming gratitude to God
for the company, despite what he described
as the harsh economic challenges in the
global and domestic business environment. He said that besides the company had
recorded growth in some key indices in the
year ended December 31, 2016 and also
disclosed that, the company recorded 11 per
cent growth in profit after tax margin from
N205 million in 2015 to N228 million in the year ended December 2016. The growth, he said, was mainly attributable
to improved efficiency in operations of the
company and the introduction of unique and
acceptable insurance products backed with
cutting-edge innovative technology. Akpan said, “investment and other incomes
grew by 16 per cent from N182 million in
2015 to N212 million in 2016. This is as a
result of shrew investment operations and
decisions. The company incurred claims of
over N371 million, while underwriting result at the end of the year amounted to N1.013
billion compared to N965 million in 2015
which amounted to 5.04 per cent in 2016. “The company’s total asset increased in
2016 by 6.5 per cent with a total of 5.8 billion
compared to N5.4 billion recorded in 2015,
while its shareholders fund grew from N4.5
billion in 2015 to N4.7 billion in the year 2016,
thus showing 5.03 per cent growth in shareholders fund”. The chairman further stated that the
company was implementing plans to improve
her capital base through available
instruments in the market, with the
introduction of tailored-made insurance
products retail and micro insurance, property investment and leasing. “The recent expansion in the board
composition was taken with the strategic
plan to expanding opportunities in the public
sector insurance. We shall continue to invest
in infrastructure, create an enabling
environment for our staff with adequate motivation”, he said. Also speaking, the Managing Director and
CEO, Mr. Adeduro Mayowa corroborated the
chairman noting that the company was
poised to introduce more innovative
insurance products with the launch of Anchor
Loss of Employment Insurance Scheme (Anchor-LoEIS), into the market with the aim
of making it become a trailblazer, while
setting standard for others to follow with
regards to non-generic insurance products.
