Some Muslim students at the University of Ibadan on Friday protested the demolition of a mosque on the campus by the school authority.

The demolition of the mosque located within Tedder (male residential hall) infuriated the students, who, in their hundreds, went on the rampage after the Jumat prayers.

They locked the university’s main gate, barring human and vehicular movement within and outside the campus.

The protest caused a traffic snarl on the campus’ major highway and the UI/Agbowo-Sango road.

Motorists were forced to make detours and seek alternative routes, while pedestrians scaled the fence to access or exit the campus.

Although the amir (president) of the university’s chapter of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria could not be reached, a member of the association’s executive said that the authority’s action irked the students because it was done without a prior notification. But the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said the demolition was part of his drive at preserving the original master-plan of the campus and freeing it of illegal structures.

Adewole described as untrue the claim that the students were not informed, saying he met with their leaders to alert them to the plan.

The best option is to scrap it.I don't see its value for our young generation. It would have been the best time to develop the coppers with entrepreneurial skills. So that when they finish serving, they can create job opportunity for other unemployed youths. Government should give the coppers some take off grant to start with. By so doing, the issue of searching for job will be a thing of the past.
