Some Muslim students at the University of Ibadan on Friday protested the demolition of a mosque on the campus by the school authority.

The demolition of the mosque located within Tedder (male residential hall) infuriated the students, who, in their hundreds, went on the rampage after the Jumat prayers.

They locked the university’s main gate, barring human and vehicular movement within and outside the campus.

The protest caused a traffic snarl on the campus’ major highway and the UI/Agbowo-Sango road.

Motorists were forced to make detours and seek alternative routes, while pedestrians scaled the fence to access or exit the campus.

Although the amir (president) of the university’s chapter of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria could not be reached, a member of the association’s executive said that the authority’s action irked the students because it was done without a prior notification. But the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said the demolition was part of his drive at preserving the original master-plan of the campus and freeing it of illegal structures.

Adewole described as untrue the claim that the students were not informed, saying he met with their leaders to alert them to the plan.

a leader's actions should be always based on his followers' needs and request.
besides, the timing is very suspect. obviously an anti-islamic move.

If they were previously informed and notified, then the admin didnt do no ill. People tend to come up with illegal structures knowing fully well they are not permanent but then cry foul when they have to be brought down.
What the admin should do, is giv them a site where such structure should be according to the masterplan
