Redeemer’s Health Village unveils robotic surgery to curb medical tourism

Citing the need to curb medical tourism, health sector stakeholders have called for a stronger healthcare ecosystem to support the adoption of advanced surgical technologies in Nigeria.

The stakeholders noted that robotic-assisted surgery could improve surgical precision, reduce blood loss, and shorten recovery time for patients undergoing complex procedures.

They, however, stressed that sustaining such technology would require skilled personnel, continuous training, reliable infrastructure, and strong collaboration among healthcare institutions, government, and the private sector.

The stakeholders made the call when the Redeemer’s Health Village unveiled robotic surgery services in partnership with RoboMed Global Inc., USA, to advance healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
The partnership also combines robotic surgery services with a training academy to equip Nigerian professionals with the skills to perform and support advanced procedures.

Redeemer’s Health Village is a faith-based 300-bed multispecialty hospital established by the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

While commending RCCG leadership at the launch, the Minister of State for Health, Dr Iziaq Salako, said the addition of robotic surgery would advance healthcare services being provided by RHV.

“The vision of robotic surgery that is being translated into reality today will no doubt help to save lives and add value to the country,” he said.

According to him, it aligns very strongly with at least two of the four pillars of our health transformation agenda, which are to improve health outcomes and unlock the healthcare value chain.

“It also resonates very strongly with our vision to reverse the dominant direction of medical tourism from outbound to inbound and save the country from scarce foreign exchange,” he said.

Salako said the services introduced by RHV, which include a structured training program for surgeons in the country, would lead to appropriate certification to practice robotic surgery in a safe and controlled manner in Nigeria.

“This is a commendable pathway to update the clinical skills of our surgeons for new medical technology,” he said.

He urged Nigerians, particularly players in the healthcare value chain, to join hands in building “a fully functional health system, anchored on equity, affordability, and able to meet the health needs of any Nigerian at any point in time”.

Also speaking, a former Minister of State for Health, Olorunnimbe Mamora, while commending RHV for the giant leap, said robotic-assisted surgery represents another significant milestone in that journey of healthcare innovation.
Represented by the First National Overseer of RCCG, Pastor Joseph Olayemi, Adeboye said that by combining surgeons’ expertise with robotic precision and fear of God, many lives would be saved.

“We believe that knowledge, science and technology, when responsibly and compassionately deployed with the fear of God, are powerful instruments for preserving life and alleviating human suffering,” Olayemi said.

Hello house, I am a father of three children and I mistakenly got my wife pregnant again which I don't want and I've told her to let get rid of it butcher the innocent soul because the pregnancy is just two weeks old and it is yet to form but she insisted that she's going to born it.

I told her to reason with me because my salary is just 150k monthly while she teaches in a school. I told her the financial burden will be too much on us but she said no. She said God will provide for us to take care of our children but I'm working with the reality of things and not something that is not certain.

Short People Live Longer Than Tall People. So Why do People Want to be Tall?

I do not think that altitude-challenged people would so desire tallness if they know the full disadvantages that come with being tall.

I was discussing this issue with some people a few weeks ago on the advantages of operating under the radar, and I asked my audience how many centenarians they have seen before who are six foot tall. They couldn’t answer, so I helped them out.

Tellingly, tall centenarians are a very rare breed, even though we have had just a few centenarians and supercentenarians who stood six feet or taller in their prime or older age.

People like James Easton who reached 108 years old at a height of 6 feet 2 inches, defying general statistical trends. There was also Melvin Campbell who died in 2021 at the ripe age of 111 years old standing about 6 feet 2 inches when drafted for World War II. But they can be counted off the fingers.

There are reasons we do not have very tall old people. Aside from the fact that people lose height as they age due to spinal compression and posture changes, meaning that a 6-foot person in youth often drops below that mark by age 80 or 100, the major factor is biological.

Statistical studies show an inverse correlation between extreme height and longevity, making men and women over six feet tall a very small minority among centenarians.

Tall people die earlier than short people because shorter stature is consistently linked to longer lifespan and distinct biological advantages.

You might not like your “smalie” stature or you suffer from certain inhibitions of complex fall-outs due to their height, but you should thank God for giving you a frame that does not exert undue demands on your heart and your cells.

Taller bodies contain more cells, increasing the total number of cell divisions required over a lifetime. This higher cellular turnover makes taller individuals more susceptible to cumulative damage from free radicals, toxins, and the wear-and-tear of cellular replication.

Researchers note that taller bodies use up their cellular replication capacity faster that is why smaller women have been found to have a higher capacity for cell replacement compared to bigger men.

Check around your village, or neighborhood, you’d discover that small statured women make up a higher number of the oldest people you can point to. Same goes for shorter men. And this has little to do with the fact that post menaupausal women lose bone mass and shrink as they grow older.

Large-scale studies covering over 1.17 million adults found that the shortest men had a significantly lower mortality risk than their taller counterparts, with the tallest men facing an 18% higher risk of death.

And this pattern holds across populations, even in places many people are not naturally vertically endowed. Take the Okinawans for instance, even though they belong to the Blue Zone of the world where people live the longest, still within the general Japanese population.

They tend to be shorter than mainland Japanese, and they boast the highest percentage of centenarians globally presently hitting over a thousand as at March 2026, people there often averaging around 5 feet tall.

Within the Seven Day Adventist community of Loma Linda in the United States, a population known as tall on global average and being amongst the Blue Zone of the world, after all things considered, longevity is still tilted in favour of their shorter members.

So why are shorter people so blessed with this advantage and why should the rest of us envy them instead of looking down on them both literally and figuratively.

It appears that the advantage our altitude-challenged brethren and sistren have over us is woven into our genes. Science says that a reduced signaling of the insulin/IGF-1 pathway, which promotes growth and is linked to shorter stature, is associated with improved survival.

Studies have found that lower IGF-1 activity is connected to lower body height and better old-age survival, especially in women. This pathway influences not just height, but metabolism and aging, with reduced activity potentially protecting against cancers and metabolic disorders.

This links to the FOXO3 gene, often present in peewee individuals, which is tied to better cell repair, reduced inflammation, and greater stress resistance.

Research consistently shows a lower risk of coronary heart disease and certain cancers in shorter populations. This is supported by Mendelian randomisation studies, which provide strong evidence that height increases the risk of cancer and cancer mortality. For every 9 cm increase in height, the risk of cancer diagnosis rises by about 10%.

While environmental factors like nutrition and healthcare play a role, the biological data is clear that being a shortie offers distinct cellular, hormonal, and genetic advantages that contribute to a longer, healthier life.

The message is clear, if you fall within the munchkin class individuals, you are at a great biological advantage, stop envying taller people, and they are mostly prone to ceiling fan accidents.

How Awolowo 'toasted' Hannah, won her love

When Hannah returned to Ikenne (now in Ogun State) from Lagos in 1933, she had become an attractive 18-year old young woman. She was turning heads in the small Remo town. Her beauty was complemented by her charm, modishness and cosmopolitan skills. Young men in Ikenne were in awe and not a few of the mothers of young men were eager to 'snatch' this young woman for their bachelor-sons.

Even though Hannah was unaware of the young Ikenne man (Obafemi) living in Ibadan who had moved from public letter-writing into transportation business and then produce-buying, he was aware of her. He knew of her family background and had heard so much about what a beautiful, amiable, conscientious, and disciplined lady she was.

In the immediate post-Victorian era Western Nigeria, “love-letter” had become the significant and acceptable way by which the educated and the “modern” men courted similarly educated and modern young women. But when Obafemi wrote his first letter to Hannah intimating her of his love for her and his desire for a relationship that would lead to marriage, she hadn’t even met him and was left wondering who this love-struck man was.

“My husband started courting me in writing ever before we met face to face,” Hannah discloses in her autobiography. He was then the secretary of the transporter’s union in Ibadan and a leading member of the produce buyer’s association. The skills he had deployed as a public letter-writer came in handy in the process of expressing his affection for Hannah. Even though he deployed the language facilities he had acquired from wide-ranging literature, he made the core of his message very clear: “I want to marry you.”

Hannah was not interested in a relationship; she was not even interested in dating a man she had not met. There were a few others who had expressed interest in her. They were mostly non-Ikenne indigenes. Given her mother’s very clear and strong position that she was not ready to “lose” her to some non-indigene who could take her to a “far-away” place after marriage, she turned down her suitors. Even though the latest suitor was an Ikenne indigene, she was still not interested. But the letters continued to arrive from Obafemi in Ibadan. He needed to move on to the next stage of what was emerging to be a well-planned life and would not be deterred by the lady’s rebuff.

One day Mr. Emmanuel Obajimi Olutunda, a native of Ikenne and Obafemi’s friend who was also a relation of Hannah met her to verbally relay another message from Obafemi. Olutunda spoke glowingly about this man. He was a “serious,” “successful” and “focused” man who would make a good husband, he said. The relentlessness of the suitor through letters and Olutunda’s testimonial succeeded in raising some curiosity in Hannah. She told Olutunda, “Look, I don’t even know the man you are introducing to me.” That was an ice-breaker. Olutunda promised to bring the suitor as soon as possible.
He sent a message to Obafemi in Ibadan. It was a message of optimism, or more precisely, of possibility.

On the appointed day in 1934, the smartly-dressed Obafemi, accompanied by Olutunda, met Hannah in her friend’s house. Here, at last, was the man behind the sweet words. And here was the object of his desire, the much-sought after beauty. Obafemi introduced himself and added that he was the one behind the letters. He had come to re-affirm his craving for her love. He asked for her hand in marriage. Having satisfied her curiosity, Hannah again repeated her rejection of his request for a relationship that could blossom into marriage. She told him she had someone else in her life. It was just a ploy to shake him off.

Before that day, as Hannah repeated, “I did not know him very well, because he left Ikenne in 1921 when I was just six years old, but I have been hearing about him. He had written to me, as was the pattern in those days…. I rejected his offer saying there was a man already in my life. You know you won’t agree immediately…

“Eventually, we came to terms and settled down.” That was how Hannah described her decision to enter into a relationship with the man who would go on to redefine modern political leadership in Nigeria.
