Politics / Nigeria’s Economy Would Have Crumbled With Atiku Or Obi As President - Oladele by hisexcellency34: 12:25pm On Apr 21
Bosun Oladele, the national secretary of South West Agenda for Asiwaju 2023 (SWAGA’23), representated the Irepo/Olorunsogo/Orelope federal constituency of Oyo state at the national assembly from 2015 to 2019. He is also a former commissioner of information in the state.

In this interview with TheCable’s TEMIDAYO AKINSUYI, he spoke on developments in the country since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in 2023.

TheCable: You campaigned vigorously for Tinubu and promised Nigerians that things would be better if he won. It’s almost one year since Tinubu was sworn in, are you impressed with his performance, especially when you consider the hardship Nigerians are facing?

OLADELE: The truth must be told. President Tinubu has never minced words from his campaign to his various speeches in office. He has always said it that he wished that there could be other ways that some of these things could be done but there isn’t. A popular age-long saying is that gold will not be gold until it has passed through fire.

If you look at it, every country that has emancipated till date had their own history and story of turbulence. The reality is that a sick person will either take medication or go through surgery in order to get well. None of these two is sweet or palatable. They all leave bitter taste in the mouth; but at the end, the sick person will get back on his feet.

I will say President Tinubu has been a leader that has walked his talk. He has spoken to every situation and has listened to the demands of Nigerians. He never disconnected himself from the reality of what is going on outside. In the area of policy formulation, drive and implementation, he has considered the opinion of people that matter. I will say that we have never had a leader in his mold before so far, so good.

The indices are clear. Apart from the fact that he keeps saying it at every point in time, most of the things that he has promised, he has been working assiduously on them. He has involved critical stakeholders in most of his policy formulation and implementation. For the first time, the CBN has been dictating the rate of forex rather than what we used to have, when you have the parallel market or BDCs dictating the race.

When it comes to fighting the ills in the society, those things that have constituted themselves into the cog in the wheel of progress in the economy. I think he has really tried more than anyone else in this time. I can’t remember who has done it that way. I want to say at the risk of sounding immodest that Tinubu is putting Nigeria on the right path. He doesn’t waste time in addressing issues and he is never afraid of policy reversal once there is a superior argument regarding those policies. I believe those are the stuff that any good leader is made of. You don’t have to be rigid just for the sake it. You have to be rigid and be positively so. I think I’ve seen that in Tinubu.

TheCable: An international media platform recently said Nigeria is burning through foreign-exchange reserves at a rate not seen in four years, raising concerns that the central bank is depleting its dollar holdings to support the naira. If true, don’t you think that is not sustainable in the long run?

OLADELE: I beg to disagree. Whoever is giving them that kind of analysis or information upon which they based such assumption, that person is more of a trader than an economist. The CBN has churned out many policies and taken many positive actions which have really strengthened the naira. They have made it so that you can’t be throwing around dollar in our economy today. If you have more than 10,000 dollars today, you have to explain the source. That alone has put a lot of money launderers off their usual tracks. Also, sourcing for forex from unscrupulous sources have been cut off. Also, the diaspora remittances can no longer be received in dollars. This will only help the naira if you can’t get it in dollars and that is part of what we are witnessing now.

Again, his interaction with state governors has really helped. There have been speculations that immediately monthly allocations from the federal government are released to states, there is a spike in dollar rate. This led to the belief by some Nigerians that maybe some of the governors have been mopping up dollars with slush funds. I had it on good authority that the president has addressed it several times with them. To me, that is a leader that knows his onions.

Some of the government-owned refineries are starting. In fact, the senate ad-hoc committee investigating the turnaround maintenance of Nigeria’s refineries has said the Port Harcourt Refinery will begin operation before the end of December. The private-owned one, that is the Dangote Refinery, is already working. The demand on dollar to be able to buy diesel has dropped sharply. All these policies will only gear at nothing but upward mobility of the naira.

Look at the foreign reserve that we are talking about. I was reliably informed that Nigeria has paid at least $12 billion in terms of foreign debts. If we had paid that and we had about $34 billion when this administration was coming in, as of today, we still have about $1.5 billion debit from the foreign reserve. If you juxtapose that with the $12 billion that has been paid out, are we really depleting the foreign reserve? The answer is no! So, the media platform has done nothing but to bring in trading theories and layman analysis in place of doing due diligence and research. Unfortunately, some media houses here in Nigeria have been lashing on that and parroting these laymen analyses. That is wrong.

TheCable: The value of the naira is rising, yet the prices of food items and other commodities are not coming down and still beyond the reach of the common man. Why is that so?

OLADELE: Number one, CBN’s job is to defend the naira, not to attack it. They are defending it right now in terms of policies on the table that can not only be seen but also verifiable. Two, most traders that inflated prices, they did it off the cuff without any economic basis. These were people that increased prices immediately they heard that subsidy was removed. That also affected the dollar rate too because if you want to change money, the BDCs fix arbitrary prices and that was why it kept going up. Those sharp practices kept going on until the CBN decided to cut their wings through well-tested policies that were very effective. The prices we have in terms of commodities and food items are artificial. It has nothing to do with the dollar.

TheCable: What is your assessment of the performance of the ministers in President Tinubu’s cabinet?

OLADELE: Of course, Nigerians expect the ministers to have done better in some areas. I believe that at the end of the day, they will perform creditably well to the admiration of Nigerians. Like we have been told in the past, he doesn’t give you assignment while waiting for you to work and bring feedback. He works with you in ensuring that there is a feedback. So, definitely, he has shown good leadership and his actions show that he was prepared for governance.

TheCable: Do you think any of the opposition presidential candidates, especially Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, would have done better if they had won the election?

OLADELE: Never! Those two don’t have the experience required to govern a country like Nigeria. This is the first time we are having a finance expert manage the affairs of Nigeria as president. Show me what these two men have done before when they held public offices and I will also tell you that I have seen a virgin in a maternity ward before.

Obi was a governor for eight years in Anambra state. There is no traceable impact of his administration in that state till date. Governors that spent less time running Anambra had more positive impact than Obi in terms of infrastructure, developmental projects and so on. The only thing he could point out was that he saved money. Economists would ask you what is the benefit of saving if you are not using it to grow your income or bring development to yourself or the state? Of course, he was able to bring in a personal business which is the brewery. Is that the person you want to entrust Nigeria into his hands?

When you look at his campaign, when Obi gives you statistics, they are always faulty. Many people didn’t get to know because they don’t bother to fact-check his words. Immediately we started fact-checking, we discovered Peter Obi was giving off-the-cuff statistics in order to bamboozle people and get votes in the election.

Atiku is becoming more like Former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He keeps writing press releases on every issue, both the ones he understands and the ones he doesn’t. He just wants to impress Nigerians that he is doing the work of opposition. Meanwhile, these were issues that were not addressed when he was in government as vice-president to Obasanjo. What did they do in terms of refineries? It was the same Atiku that told us that he was going to sell our refineries to his friends if he becomes president. He is the same one criticising Tinubu for giving the 700-km Lagos-Calabar coastal highway to a supposed ally at a highly competitive price. The design of that highway, alongside the East-West road, Bagary-Sokoto, Ikere Gorge Dam in Oyo North have always been there when Atiku and Obasanjo were in power. What did Atiku do while in power? The National Shipping Line was scrapped under them. Nigeria Airways was scrapped under them. A lot of government-owned properties was scrapped or sold under them in the name of privatisation without providing any alternatives. The roads were bad and tollgates, which were meant to earn money to rehabilitate those roads, were dismantled. What was the social security schemes that they put in place for Nigerians? What did they do about power supply when they were in government?

It was under them that we used $16 billion to generate darkness. Was Atiku not part of that administration? What is he going to do better if he becomes president? So, I don’t think Atiku and Obi would have done anything better. In fact, with the kinds of challenges Asiwaju met in office, Nigeria’s economy would have crumbled if either Atiku or Obi are in charge now. Anybody can challenge me to a debate on this issue. None of them could have done anything better than what Tinubu is doing now.

Politics / Ondo 2024: Why APC Faithful Should Honour Akeredolu’s Wish by hisexcellency34: 4:26pm On Apr 19
This is indeed an interesting time in Ondo State, widely regarded as the Sunshine State. In the last few days, the political landscape in the state has been characterised by intrigue and intense, high-wired politics. The electorate will troop out on November 16, 2024, to elect a new governor for the state. However, before that date, those eyeing the number one political office in the state must first scale through the hurdle of primaries, where elections will be conducted to determine who flies the flag of the various political parties.

The last governorship election was conducted on October 10, 2020. It was won by Rotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was running for a second term in office. Sadly, Akeredolu died in a German hospital after a long battle with prostate cancer on December 27, 2023. Shortly after, his deputy, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, was sworn in to complete the remaining year of the administration.

Currently in the APC, 16 governorship aspirants who have secured clearance will, on Saturday, April 20, test their popularity among the party faithful. The 16 aspirants already cleared by the APC Screening Committee include the incumbent Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa; Chief Olusola Oke (SAN); Wale Akinterinwa; Isaacs Kekemeke; Funmilayo Waheed-Adekojo; Folakemi Omogoroye; Olusoji Ehinlanwo; John Odimayo; Senator Jimoh Ibrahim; Oladiran Iyanjan; Mayowa Akinfolarin; Olugbenga Edema; Prof. Adedayo Faduyile; Brigadier-General Felix Ohunyeye (rtd); Morayo Lebi; and Ifeoluwa Oyedele.

All card-carrying members of the APC in Ondo State will have a say in who becomes the standard bearer of the party given the fact that the direct primary method—a process whereby every party member votes for the candidate of their choice to represent the party in an election, has been approved. This, according to analysts, is preferable to the commonly used indirect primary, where delegates (who are mostly financially induced) elect who becomes the candidate of the party.

All the aspirants are qualified in their own rights. Some of them are technocrats who have excelled both in the private and public sectors. However, as a stakeholder in the politics of the state, I strongly believe that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa should be chosen by the faithful in the state to fly the party’s flag in the governorship election.

Examining Akeredolu’s prophecy
When asked why he picked Aiyedatiwa as his running mate for his second term in office, the late Akeredolu said he chose him because of his hard work, dedication, and loyalty. He also said Aiyedatiwa displayed unreserved commitment and support for his political aspirations from the beginning and has been consistent through thick and thin. Aiyedatiwa’s choice as deputy governor was hailed by many associates of the late Akeredolu who do not want a repeat of what happened between the governor and his deputy, Agboola Ajayi, during his first term. One of them even vouched that the governor could sleep with his two eyes closed and his mind at peace if Ayedatiwa was watching over him at night.

To all those who know the late Akeredolu, he was a man not given to making frivolous remarks. Also, he was a forthright leader who will always say things the way they ought to be, no matter whose ox is gored. While many of his governor-colleagues were trying to be in the good books of former president Muhammadu Buhari, Akeredolu bluntly told him he was condoning the activities of Fulani herdsmen who were killing innocent farmers in Ondo State and gave them a seven-day ultimatum to register with the government or leave the state.

Speaking during his inauguration for a second term at the International Culture and Event Centre (The Dome) on February 24, 2021, Akeredolu, while addressing Aiyedatiwa, said, “The name we give our children or the name we bear at times matters a lot. I want to congratulate this man. When they gave you ‘Lucky,’ they knew you would be lucky; now you are lucky. You’re also given ‘Orimisan; only the fortunate get chosen to be deputy governors. You’re fortunate. Even your parents’ names speak volumes: ‘Aiyedatiwa’ (Life is good for us). Your life is good now. You have been loyal; you have been consistent.”

Akeredolu then prophesied that Aiyedatiwa was eminently qualified to take over the administration of Ondo State after the expiration of his second term.

“You’re worthy of this position, and I want to thank you for being considered to complete this journey with us. I have a maximum of four years; maybe you can proceed from there. It is for me now to calm down and for you to grow. I must come down for you to grow; I have done my little bit. So, I congratulate you and your wife. I love you,” he stated.

These are very loaded words. As I have pointed out in some of my X (formerly Twitter posts), that heartfelt statement was the beginning of Aiyedatiwa’s problem in Ondo State, as some stakeholders in the state who have been nursing the ambition to succeed the governor saw it as a direct endorsement. Akeredolu loved and trusted Aiyedatiwa till the end, but those who felt their political ambition would be truncated by those kind words went to town screaming ‘betrayal’! It is worthy of mention here that the fearless Akeredolu never recanted his statement or made any negative remarks concerning Aiyedatiwa until he breathed his last.

Like the highly respected columnist Lasisi Olagunju pointed out in his article ‘Akeredolu, Death Desires, and 2024’ published on January 1, 2024, “Akeredolu, I gathered very reliably, confirmed he had prostate cancer sometime in 2016. He had surgery in Germany in 2019. He was to go for a mandatory follow-up procedure in 2020. But he couldn’t go for that; COVID blocked him as it blocked all of the world for a whole year. That gap in treatment was the twist at the hand of fate. He lost the battle to cancer long before his final breath last week. Could he have helped it? No. That was why he was born; it was his exit path.”.

Akeredolu knew he had a terminal ailment (prostate cancer), which he may not survive. Like the former England football manager, Sven Goran Eriksson, who revealed that he had cancer and has been told he has about a year to live, maybe the doctors treating Akeredolu may have told him he has a few more years to live, and that was why he started making his exit plans—picking a trusted deputy who can continue from where he stopped. I have a feeling his widow, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, knew about it and was also planning for her political future in case the inevitable happened. That was why, even as the first lady of Ondo State, she went to Imo State in 2022 to contest a senatorial election in Imo East. She accused the Imo state governor, Hope Uzodimma, of imposition and withdrew from the primary. If she had won, she would be in the hallowed chambers of the Senate now.

In September 2022, when the media reported that Akeredolu, upon his return from Germany, sacked all the media aides of Aiyedatiwa, many Nigerians thought the actions were indeed taken by the governor. However, it has been revealed that some powerbrokers in the state who surrounded the late governor were behind all the schisms. They took advantage of the man’s incapacitation and carried out many atrocities in his name, including attempts to remove his loyal and dependable deputy from office, but God frustrated their plans. Some of them, having realised he may not survive the illness, even allegedly forged his signatures to sign many vital documents.

Those plotting Aiyedatiwa’s removal believed that if he succeeds Akeredolu, he will have more influence, resources, and power in the race to get the governorship ticket of the APC. Even many of the lawmakers who were spearheading his impeachment then, have now turned around to endorse him for the governorship election. God’s ways are different from man’s ways.

My message to the Ondo APC faithful is clear: if you really loved the late Akeredolu and you respect his wish for the continuity of the programs he has started, give your vote to Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa. That was the wish of the late governor, and he publicly attested to that while alive. He never said the same about the other aspirants who were making claims that he wanted them as successors.

From the primaries to the main election, may God give the good people of my state, Ondo, the wisdom to choose right, and may the best man win.

Akinsuyi, former Group Politics Editor of the Daily Independent, writes from Akure.

Politics / What Many Of Us In Buhari's Cabinet Will Remember Ogbonaya Onu For -Lai Mohammed by hisexcellency34: 1:29pm On Apr 13
By Temidayo Akinsuyi

Lai Mohammed, immediate past minister of information, says Ogbonnaya Onu was one of the star performers in ex-President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet.

Onu, former minister of science and technology and first civilian governor of Abia state, died on April 11 aged 72.

Speaking in a chat with TheCable, Mohammed said the death of the former governor was a personal loss for him.

“It was a sad loss, a personal loss for me because of the relationship we shared,” Mohammed said.

“Ogbonnaya Onu was a quintessential gentleman. He was very quiet but very effective in all he does. He believed he could add value to the polity and he did just that. He is one of the unsung heroes of this country.

“He was a man of details who was passionate, honourable and patriotic. When in 2022, President Muhammadu Buhari asked all those who wanted to contest for election to resign from the cabinet, he voluntarily resigned. Even when the primaries was conducted and he didn’t win, he never made any attempt to come back to government.

“I had a very special relationship with him. Many people don’t know that Ogbonnaya Onu was not just a politician. This is a man who made a first class in engineering, he was the first civilian governor of Abia state during the SDP/NRC days.”

Mohammed also lauded the late Onu for the sacrifices he made for the merger that birthed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“In the third republic, he surrendered his ambition so that the collaboration and cooperation between the then AD and ANPP will work. He later rose to became national chairman of ANPP and he was very influential when we were doing our merger to become APC,” Mohammed added.

“For a national chairman of a legacy party to support and work for the success of the merger means that he was ready to give up his own position, because with the merger, all the legacy chairmen like Chief Bisi Akande, late Tony Momoh and Onu had to vacate their position for just one new chairman.”

Recounting his contributions during cabinet meetings Mohammed said “his death has hit me because we had a very personal relationship”.

“What many of our colleagues in President Buhari’s cabinet will remember him for was that when he was contributing during cabinet meetings, he was always thorough, comprehensive and no matter what it is, he will stick to his guns and follow up his arguments to the last letter. He doesn’t hold any grudge with anyone,” he added.

Now that the CBN is doing all it can and the naira keeps appreciating, some idiots like Deji Adeyanju are shouting that the CBN is defending the naira with dollars and it is just temporary.

Honestly, I don't care how Cardoso does it as long as our naira keeps appreciating in value and is stronger again
