As more people are becoming more connected so do the issues that affect us as a world, according to the recently released Human Development Index (HDI) for 2018. The annual report by the United Nations Development Programme usually measures a number of factors to give a comprehensive overview of development. Thus, instead of focusing on economic growth, it looks at other factors such as health and life expectancy, education and standard of living. The report sampled 189 countries and territories, rating them on how they performed in the three main categories. Here is how Africa’s top 10 countries fared. |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has brought fresh charges against a former Minister of Petroleum Resources , Diezani Alison- Madueke , SUNDAY PUNCH has learnt . It was learnt that the EFCC would in the coming days join Diezani in a suit filed against an oil tycoon , Jide Omokore . The EFCC will subsequently apply for a bench warrant against the former minister as part of the process to kick - start her extradition from the United Kingdom. EFCC source said , “ There have always been charges against Diezani . However, we had to remove her name for technical reasons . Also, the matter is no longer before Justice Nyako . “ We will amend the charges to include her name and then we will apply for a bench warrant because there are many diplomatic processes involved . We will amend the charges against her . “ You cannot extradite a person from foreign land without evidence that the person is wanted or the person ’s arrest has been ordered by a court.” A bench warrant is an arrest warrant that is ordered by a judge against the defendant in a criminal case . It is typically issued in the case of a failure to appear for trial . ” A senior EFCC official who spoke on condition of anonymity noted that a case was filed against Diezani in 2016 but had been withdrawn . However, with the delay by the UK authorities, the commission has decided to personally handle the matter . source: https://punchng.com/efcc-to-amend-charges-obtain-arrest-warrant-against-diezani/

The Islamic State group has claimed to have killed 118 people in its self - styled West Africa province in the last week, after a series of attacks against military bases in northeast Nigeria that have raised fears of a resurgent Boko Haram. The Islamist militant group said in a video posted online late on Thursday that it conducted five operations in Chad and Nigeria between November 15 and 21, according to the SITE Intelligence Group , which monitors jihadist activity. No other details were given but the claim follows recent attacks on army bases in Borno state , northeast Nigeria , which has been the epicentre of the deadly nine - year conflict . Security sources said at least 44 soldiers were killed in an attack in Metele village, near the border with Niger , on Sunday, although one soldier who escaped gave a higher toll . “ The truth is we lost more than 100 men because we were quickly routed ,” he said on condition of anonymity from the Borno state capital , Maiduguri , on Friday. “ We were outgunned, so we tried to fight. We realised it was unrealistic so we decided to leave.” Most of the soldiers were killed as the trucks they were in tried to crash through a perimeter fence at the base but got stuck. Senior officers were among the dead, he added . Even a search team that came to find the bodies of fallen soldiers on Tuesday was attacked , the soldier said. “ We were outgunned, so we tried to fight. Over 50 Staff of the Nigerian High Commison London were dismissed and asked to accept a letter dated 22nd of November, 2018, Meanwhile, the Commission claims the dismissal took effect from 1st of January 2018. The staff of the commission have been working all year (2018) with months of no pay. The letter of termination came due to continual outcry from staff members of the commission demanding their salary arrears. In the letter signed by Helen Nzeako on behalf of the Nigerian High Commission UK, the termination of employment is as a result of restructuring of the organization and due to budgetary constraints. The staff members of the Commission have received this news in dismay and disappointment as most have served the Federal Government of Nigeria meritoriously. A source alleged that the exercise is a plot by the management to disengage every staff to so as to pave way for them to employ their friends & family members into these positions. The letter of termination or disengagement instructed staff to reapply for the same job if they so wish. “We want the World to see how we are been ill- treated just because we asked for our salaries. This is so unfair and an injustice to democratic rule”. As quoted by a displaced staff of the commission. However the aggrieved staff are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari, the Federal Government of Nigeria to look into the matter.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said that the Federal Government will change the educational curriculum in such a way that will enable pre - primary school pupils to learn software development and coding . Osinbajo said this during the 50th National Annual Conference of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria held in Abuja recently. Speaking at the event with the theme, ‘Stand Out ’, the Vice President said that many countries across the world had begun to shift focus from natural to human resources development . He said that any youth , who lacked Information and Communication Technology skills and knowledge , would become unemployable in the future , stressing that this had informed the Federal Government ’s decision to infuse educational development in its Economic Recovery and Growth Plan. Osinbajo said, “ The focus on primary and secondary education is on employability skills, especially technology. So our focus is on teaching young people from the primary, even pre- primary , school to use all the new techniques, especially code writing skills and software writing skills. “ The new technologies that are developing everything we are seeing today clearly show that anyone in the coming generation will be left behind, if they are not equipped with the knowledge of cutting edge of technology or with a sound knowledge of technology , at least. We believe that our educational system must incorporate that , which is why , with the new curriculum , a lot of attention is focused on science , technology , engineering and mathematics.” “ For a country like Nigeria , which is highly dependent on oil, we need to remind our people that oil is a depleting asset. The country ’ s large population, especially our young ones, is where its strength truly lies .” https://punchng.com/well-teach-nursery-school-pupils-software-development-osinbajo/

Until now, various officials of the Buhari administration, especially the Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, had claimed that Nigeria’s rice importation had dropped, and that in fact, we had produced so much rice locally that rice mills in Thailand were shutting down in droves because there was no demand from Nigeria. Yet, the US Department of Agriculture says rice importation by Nigeria has increased, and that the country will remain the world’s second largest importer of rice by 2019 (second to China). Incidentally, the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, is now debating whether rice importation has dropped or increased. They said that Nigeria’s out-of-school children have reduced to eight million but UNICEF says it has increased to 13.2 million and that Nigeria has the highest number of out-of- school children in the world. While in opposition, the All Progressives Congress said that there was nothing like fuel subsidy, that any fuel subsidy payment was a fraud. When they got into government, we not only confirmed that fuel subsidy exists, but that they have christened it Under-Recovery and are even paying much more fuel subsidy unappropriated than the previous government, by illegally diverting money from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and NLNG. Curiously, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the NNPC are debating who, between government and the oil corporation, is paying the subsidy. The Yoruba say, “Omi Eko, Eko ni”, the water in pap is pap as well. When in opposition, they said that fuel importation by independent petroleum marketers was a scam. Now in government, they handle it solely through the NNPC and have almost doubled the daily consumption volume that they previously described was a scam. The NNPC is debating the daily fuel consumption volumes. While in opposition, they said that they would reduce fuel price from N87 per litre to N40 per litre. When they got into government, they first increased fuel price to N141 per litre and subsequently hunkered down and increased it further to N145 per litre. This was while paying more fuel subsidy than their predecessors. We are being told that they may have to increase fuel price again. They said that they had rooted out corruption, plugged leakages, weeded out “ghost workers”, ended wastage, but the only veritable confirmation of these claims should have been a drastic reduction in expenditure on all those lines. Yet, these expenditure lines have almost all witnessed increases, and in the case of salaries, wages and pensions, an almost N500bn increase. They say that they are winning the war against corruption, which ordinarily should reflect in our rankings under the Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index. The reverse is the case as Nigeria moved from 136 to 148 in the world this year. Probably, the worst ever retrogression within a one-year period. They say we have technically defeated Boko Haram, and that Nigeria is more secure than it has ever been, yet every day, our gallant soldiers are being slaughtered and secretly buried in cemeteries; our kith and kin are daily butchered by marauding herdsmen. They said that they have only borrowed $10bn since 2015, yet, they met $10.31682bn external debt in June 2015, and increased it to $22.083bn by June 2018 (met the more expensive in June $1.5bn external commercial in 2015, increased it to $8.8bn in June 2018). Met N8.3965tn domestic debt in June 2015, and increased it to N12.151tn by June 2018. But the naira has since been devalued so the Vice President argues that they only borrowed $10bn, and this by converting the naira debt by today’s exchange rate. They say that they have lifted 10.073 million Nigerians from poverty to prosperity, yet, a report by Brookings Institution (the American research group) reveals that Nigeria (with a population of 198 million) has overtaken India (with a population of 1.324bn people) as the poverty capital of the world with 87 million people in Nigeria living in extreme poverty, compared to India’s 73 million. Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma, is still debating the numbers lifted or cast into poverty. I can go on and on, but the summary is that nothing adds up with this government. It is all propaganda, sophistry, demagoguery, smoke and mirrors. Chizzyjoyce:haba! it can't be vision 3030, it will around 3028, then it will take another 20 years to complete. |
Several weeks ago, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) formally awarded the 2022 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) to Senegal, making it the first ever African country to host the Olympics. The competition has been tagged ‘Dakar 2022’. Other bidders for the competition included Botswana, Nigeria and Tunisia. The IOC’s Evaluation Commission and the Executive Board determined that Dakar, Senegal, presented the best value proposition and the greatest opportunities at this moment in time. According to them, Dakar 2022 presented a visionary, ambitious and technically sound YOG project that addresses the long-term aims of the country. Senegal has a large youth population and views the YOG as a catalyst for engaging young people and developing the country’s sport and youth policy. Zimbabwe’s most decorated athlete and current Minister for Sport, Kirsty Coventry, has been appointed as the Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission for Dakar 2022. The Games will hold in three cities: Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. Senegal President Macky Sall disclosed that a 50,000-seat Olympic Stadium will be built for the competition likely to hold in May of that year. While awarding the hosting rights to Senegal, IOC President Thomas Bach said: “Africa is united behind Senegal to host the Youth Olympic Games 2022. With a young population and a passion for sport, it is time for Africa, it is time for Senegal.” Back in the day, Nigeria used to be regarded as the Giant of Africa because of the calibre of athletes the country has produced over the years in sports like Football, Athletics and Table Tennis amongst others. However, in the past decade, other African countries have been given the nod ahead of Nigeria as it concerns hosting of global competitions because they have shown better commitment in terms of their sports policies, presence of facilities, and level of organization amongst other factors. In 2015, Durban was awarded the 2022 Commonwealth Games and would have been the first African city in history to host the event. However, South Africa eventually pulled out of the hosting deal due to financial constraints. In 2016 when the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) decided to award one of the 14-legs of the Diamond League to Africa, Rabat in Morocco was chosen. In 2017, Nairobi, Kenya, hosted the final edition of the IAAF World U-18 Championships, and the competition was a success. The only other African nation to have hosted the World U-18 Championships was Morocco, in 2005. In the words of IAAF President Sebastian Coe, “We have just come from Nairobi where they hosted a spectacular Under-18 World Championships.” Following a successful hosting of the World U-18 Championships, the IAAF decided to name Kenya as hosts of the 2020 World U-20 Championships. This makes them the first ever African country to host the World U-20 Athletics Championships. The fact that Nigeria is not being considered to host some of these global events only demonstrates the little faith the organisers have in our ability to successfully execute these championships. One doesn’t need to look too far to understand why. For instance, the last-minute planning and execution of the African Senior Athletics Championships in Asaba back in August remains fresh in our memories as Nigeria trended on social media for the wrong reasons, and all of these happened because the organisers didn’t take time to adequately plan for some of these things. To a large extent, the bad press came about as a result of the flight delays experienced by athletes from several countries, and it was something that could have been averted and properly managed with a little foresight. Considering that a renovation exercise was being carried out at the Asaba Airport, thus limiting the number of flights that could be accommodated due to the lack of adequate lighting system on the runway, the organisers could have considered other alternatives suchas flying to Benin or Owerri and then connecting to Asaba from these states. Even after the teams arrived Asaba following the delays at the airport, getting their accreditation tags and allocation to hotel rooms became a herculean task. While addressing members of the press in Asaba, IAAF President Seb Coe disclosed that it is likely that an African country would host the IAAF World Championships in 2025. Ironically, while still smarting from the backlash that had resulted from poor organization of Asaba 2018, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) President Ibrahim Gusau signified Nigeria’s interest tovhost the 2025 World Championships. He said, “With the gains of what we have done here (Asaba 2018), we have all it takes to stage the global event in 2025 and perhaps any other major sporting event on a large scale”. A country that could barely handle the hosting of a continental championship, is now bidding to host the World Championships. It’s quite amusing to say the least. I am no prophetess, but I already know that Nigeria will not be chosen as the first African host of the IAAF World Championships. Three months down the line, the organisers are yet to redeem their pledge of rewarding all individual medallists from the Asaba Championships. Gold medallists were promised $3,000 each; Silver medallists $2,000, and Bronze medallists $1,000. Nigerian athletes that represented the country in Asaba are yet to get their full allowances from the competition. If we cannot sort out these seemingly little things, why should we be taken seriously as a nation? By Yemi Olus http://jimidisu.com/is-nigeria-still-the-giant-of-africa-by-yemi-olus/

A source at the INEC office told Punch correspondent that there were court orders stopping the Commission from publishing any name as the governorship candidate of the APC in the state . Uche Nwosu and Senator Hope Uzodinma have been battling , both in court and within the party for who should be its candidate. While Nwosu was declared the winner of the October 6 APC governorship primary, Uzodinma was pronounced winner of the October 1 primary which allegedly did not hold in the state . https://punchng.com/imo-apc-gov-candidate-missing-as-inec-publishes-list/

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party , Atiku Abubakar, has said President Muhammadu Buhari and his deputy , Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN ) are feeding at public expense. The former vice- president also said the two leaders collect hardship allowances of 50 per cent of their annual basic salary. He lamented that long - suffering Nigerian workers , who he said were the main sufferers of the hardship caused by the incompetence of the present administration , did not have any hardship allowance and are expected to live on unrealistic minimum wage . Atiku spoke in reaction to a statement issued by the Presidency on Wednesday denying reports that President Buhari had accepted a new minimum wage of 30,000 proposed by the tripartite committee. It alleged that approbation and reprobation “ is characteristic of the Buhari administration and that it is evidence of lack of leadership at the very top that is putting our economy in peril .” The statement read in part, “ Just two weeks ago , two of the world ’ s largest banks , HSBC and UBS , pulled out of Nigeria citing lack of policy stability as their reason . “ This same reason was given by Procter and Gamble when they pulled out last year. In the span of the three years that this administration has been in office, more than 500 companies have pulled out of Nigeria for similar reasons. Nigeria under President Buhari has become synonymous with policy flip flopping. “ A government is only as reliable as its word and if its word is not reliable then nothing else about the government will be stable . This is why Nigeria suffered from a recession under this administration and it ’s right now at risk of another recession...... https://punchng.com/minimum-wage-denial-characteristic-of-the-buhari-administration-atiku/

1. Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea The Eritrean leader is one of the lowest paid African leaders, earning a monthly salary of US $500, as of 2017 . Two years prior, there were reports that he earned on average less than US$ 400 a month, making less than what some mining companies that had set up in his own doorstep and their workers make. 2. John Magufuli of Tanzania The Tanzanian president recently revealed that he earns a salary of 9 million Tanzanian shillings ($4,000) per month. This was after his government had slashed salaries of executives at state-owned companies at 15 million Tanzanian shillings ($6,700) a month, Reuters reported. 3. Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia The Ethiopian prime minister is on a salary of just $300 a month , he revealed in October this year, saying that his mission is not to canvass wealth for himself but to bring changes in the country’s economy. Ahmed, after assuming office, also promised to deal with ethnic conflicts in the country, that have displaced over two million people since last year. 4. Beji Caid Essebsi of Tunisia He is Tunisia’s first democratically elected President, having won the election in December 2014. His salary is $16,400 USD per year though he is said to be living a comfortable life due to his family’s ties to the aristocracy and monarchy that was deposed 60 years ago. https://face2faceafrica.com/article/african-leaders-with-the-lowest-salaries/2

Yorùbá science textbook will be put to the test... A Yorùbá scholar from Tulane University, Taofeeq Adebayọ was awarded the Andrew Mellon Fellowship in Community Engaged Scholarship in 2017, through which he began translating Longman’s Basic Science 1 into the Yorùbá language for seventh-graders. His plan is to collaborate with seven schools, where he and the graduate students will teach from the translated text and perform scientific demonstrations with the help of local science teachers from those schools. “The idea is to get feedback from them regarding how our translation can be improved to meet their classroom needs and how we can design the translation so that it is accessible not only to the students but also to the teachers, as well as parents who read in Yorùbá,” said Adebayọ, who is pursuing a PhD in linguistics. https://news.tulane.edu/news/yoruba-science-textbook-will-be-put-test?fbclid=IwAR3utlqOQDPwmSKlacNJPMl7akDSV-zwOYW09HjRNlWPAcqNvHCdvcBqPUM
