That's good to know. |
With Rooney in the sort of touch where he can seemingly win matches by his own will, Ferguson is faced with the dilemma - albeit a welcome one - of whether to cash in now or manage the marksman's workload in the pursuit of Premier League and Champions League honours. England fans, of course, will also be hoping that Rooney doesn't get burnt out - or even worse, injured - for the sake of their hopes at the World Cup finals in June. Rooney has been in explosive form, following up his Champions League double against AC Milan with two more goals in the midweek win over West Ham. That took his overall goal tally for the season to 27, just 15 short of the amazing number Cristiano Ronaldo contributed to Manchester United's 2008 Champions League-winning campaign. With a maximum of 17 games left, Rooney has an obvious target to aim at. However, as he ponders a fixture list which includes a return meeting with Milan at Old Trafford on March 10 and vital Premier League games, Ferguson claims he is giving serious consideration to leaving Rooney out of the Wembley clash with Aston Villa. "It has to be a consideration simply because we have important games coming up,'' said the United boss. "The problem is he is desperate to play, he is always desperate to play. Maybe it is his chance to play right-back because he keeps telling everyone he is a great defender, centre-half or sweeper.'' With silverware on the line, Ferguson is still predicted to give Rooney another start in Sunday's showpiece but his latest comments indicate he's becoming increasingly wary over the reliance his side have on their talisman, and the subsequent workload that creates. Hinting at giving Rooney a rest this time might ease the pain of sidelining the ever- enthusiastic 24-year-old in the near future. Ferguson is also taking pressure off his main man by sticking to his now-conservative 30-goal target, despite the inevitable talk of Ronaldo's 42. "We have 10 league games after Sunday and hopefully six European ties. That is 17 games in total,'' said Ferguson. "A goal a game would bring him to 44. There's pressure for you. It is a target and who wouldn't love to get that kind of goal tally. It is hard to think he could reach it though. I don't think he has got that kind of target and I certainly haven't. "He is in a great scoring burst right now. He is popping up in the right places at the right time and his judgment in the penalty box is improving. That is a nice sign. But I have said all along if he gets over 30 I will be delighted so let's not be greedy.'' Should Ferguson opt to leave Rooney out, it would at least offer Dimitar Berbatov a chance to play. The Bulgarian could hardly have imagined that, after spending a club record £30.75million on him at the start of last season, Ferguson would leave him out of so many key games. Benched for last season's Champions League final, Berbatov was also among the substitutes against AC Milan in the San Siro. His response has been admirable though, scoring at Everton last weekend before producing an outstanding performance in a creative capacity against West Ham in midweek. "Dimitar is consistent,'' said Ferguson. "On Saturday he looked like the only one who could score and has performed well in recent games. We do have a preference to play one striker sometimes, but that does not reflect on him in any way, or Michael Owen for that matter. It is just the choice we make.'' As usual, Ferguson has more contenders for his starting line-up than places on offer. Darren Fletcher would appear a certainty and, on the basis that he missed last year's win over Tottenham through injury, so too does Brazilian full-back Rafael. The other nine spots are up for grabs, although Jonny Evans and Darron Gibson are expected to add an element of youth as United look to win the competition for a fourth time. One of the other issues surrounds the goalkeeping slot, which appears to be between Tomasz Kuszczak and Edwin van der Sar who, as he hinted last week, has opted to remain at Old Trafford for another season. The new deal will take Van der Sar beyond his 40th birthday and also allows him to thank Ferguson for the compassion shown after his wife Annemarie suffered a stroke in Holland just before Christmas. "I still feel good and am enjoying my football,'' he said. "This is a great club and I was shown a great deal of compassion and support during a difficult time in December and January, for which I am extremely grateful.'' |
Interesting, Arsenal fan should tell Wenger to win trophy |
Blue is the colour, football is the game We're all together and winning is our aim So cheer us on through the sun and rain. Chelsea, Chelsea is our name. |
Chelsea took advantage of Manchester United's slip-up at Everton when they won 2-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday to go four points clear of the champions at the top of the Premier League. Didier Drogba took his tally to 25 in all competitions with both goals as Chelsea, without influential midfielder Frank Lampard, climbed to 61 points from 27 matches ahead of United, who lost 3-1 at Everton in a lunchtime kickoff. Dimitar Berbatov put United ahead after 16 minutes at Goodison Park, but Everton won with goals from Diniyar Bilyaletdinov (18 minutes) and substitutes Dan Gosling (76th) and Jack Rodwell (90th). Third-placed Arsenal closed the gap on United to two points with a 2-0 home win over Sunderland. Nicklas Bendtner scored after 27 minutes and Cesc Fabregas added a stoppage-time penalty as the visitors' run without a win stretched to 13 matches. Manchester City are fourth with 45 points, one ahead of Liverpool, who they face at Eastlands on Sunday (3 p.m. British time). At the other end of the table, West Ham United beat Hull City 3-0 at Upton Park to pull away from the relegation zone and leave their opponents just one point above it. Portsmouth stayed nailed firmly to the bottom when they lost 2-1 at home to Stoke City after conceding a stoppage time goal to substitute Salif Diao -- his first league strike for seven years. Stoke were reduced to 10 men in the 73rd minute when Andy Wilkinson was sent off but took all three points after Robert Huth cancelled out Frederic Piquionne's opener for the debt-ravaged hosts. RARE DEFEAT Manchester United had the chance to go top, at least until Chelsea played Wolves later, if they had won but instead they suffered only their second defeat to Everton in 30 Premier League matches despite taking the lead through Berbatov. The home side equalised almost immediately when Bilyaletdinov scored with a superb left-foot shot and clinched the points in the last 14 minutes with goals from substitutes Gosling and Rodwell. Everton's win followed their victory over Chelsea in their last home match and manager David Moyes said: "It was a brilliant performance from the players and we are starting to get back to what we've been like for the last year or two." Everton, who have moved up to eight place, have now lost only one of their last 12 league matches. United manager Alex Ferguson said the defeat was a blow at this stage of the title race, a huge disappointment following their 3-2 win at AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday. "We were well beaten. We were outplayed in the second half. We are going for the championship and you don't expect Manchester United to look tired like that," he said. "It was a bad result for us at this time of year. You can't afford results like we've had today." Chelsea capitalised on United's loss by winning at Wolves, who stay 16th, only one point above the relegation zone. Wolves played some neat football in the early stages, but fell behind to a superbly crafted goal which Drogba scored after a swift one-two between Michael Ballack and Yuri Zhirkov. Drogba's second followed a huge clearance from goalkeeper Petr Cech and the win delighted coach Carlo Ancelotti. "I'm very happy, we won an important game, but we must stay quiet and calm because there are a lot of important matches coming up. I think we deserved to win," he told Sky Sports. |

After Five years of winning no trophy, the Arsenal Football Club Fans killed their coach Arsene Wenger. He goes to Heaven and God takes him on a tour. He shows Wenger a little 1- bedroom house with a faded Arsenal Flag banner hanging from the front porch. "This is your home, Coach. Most people don't get their own house up here," God said. Mr Wenger looks at the house, then turns around and looks at the one sitting on the top of the hill. It's a huge two-story mansion with white marble columns and little patios under all of the windows. Manchester United flags line both sides of the sidewalk with a huge purple and gold Manchester United banner hanging between the marble columns. "Thanks for the home, God, but let me ask you a question. I get this little 1 bedroom house with a faded Arsenal banner, and Alex Ferguson gets a mansion with new Manchester United banners and flags flying all over the place. Why is that?" God looks at him seriously for a moment and then replies, "That's not Ferguson ’s house, that's mine!!" |
Pep Guardiola has received offers from six leading European clubs, according to Josep Maria Orobitg, the Barcelona coach's agent. Guardiola's current contract ends in June and he is reluctant to commit himself until after the Catalan club's elections this summer. Manchester United are said to be interested in Guardiola as a possible successor to Sir Alex Ferguson while one source said City are prepared to offer him £7 million a year as their 'super-manager.' Lawyer Orobitg confirmed: 'We have received six offers from clubs interested in Guardiola but absolute discretion prevents me from giving details.' Juventus and Inter Milan are likely to be among those chasing Guardiola who is known to be a lover of Italy. But Guardiola speaks excellent English and is also a huge admirer of the commitment and atmosphere in the Barclays Premier League, and likes the amount of control that managers are given. Under Guardiola Barcelona won all six trophies available to them last year, including the Champions League when they beat United in the final. They are on the verge of offering him a new two-year deal with the option of a third. His salary would be greatly increased from his current level of £1m a year and he may even be offered a clause allowing him to walk away in the summer if he is not happy with the winner of the presidential election. |
Chelsea star Michael Essien is waiting to hear the results of tests after he limped out of Ghana's training session at the African Cup of Nations on Sunday with a knee injury. The midfielder was taken to hospital in Angola by ambulance and underwent tests to gauge the nature and severity of the problem. The former Lyon man had played only 45 minutes against the Ivory Coast due to a hamstring problem he carried into the tournament, but damage to the knee he injured in 2008 could be far more serious. On that occasion Essien was out for six months with a ruptured ligament, but club and country will be desperate to have the dynamic Ghanaian back as soon as possible. The Black Stars face a make-or-break clash with Burkina Faso on Tuesday, needing a win to stay in the competition after their 3-1 defeat at the hands of Didier Drogba's Ivory Coast side. Chelsea did not appear to miss their African contingent during a 7-2 thrashing of Sunderland, but have struggled in Essien's absence in the past. "I don't know the extent of the injury but we will find out later," Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac told BBC Sport. |
National President, of Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU), Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, has said improving the education sector will yield more money than crude oil. Awuzie told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Asaba that improving the educational system would encourage other African countries to send their children to Nigeria for studies. He said: “As it is now, our sister countries, send their wards to Europe for schooling, because they believe that their children will get quality education there. “ But if we can improve our educational system here, these people will now be sending their children to our country, and this means more revenue will be generated. ” Awuzie said Nigeria was blessed with quality academics who, when allowed to operate in an enabling environment, would fast- track national development. “If the government provides the necessary environment for teaching, then professional ethics will be kept, ” he said and he harped on the need for the country to have good public schools to ensure that every Nigerian benefites from sound education. Awuzie said it was not in the interest of the country for policy makers not to appropriate substantial funds to the education sector. “ The reason for this is not far fetched; they use the privilege of their position to appropriate these funds to themselves. “ They corner the resources of this nation and use them to send their children abroad for education so as to create a class between graduates of Nigerian universities and their children. “Meanwhile, the policies they make can be used to improve the quality of education and enhance access to education by the majority of the Nigerian children, ” the he said and called on Nigerian students to unite in the struggle to reposition education in the country, as the future would be bleak if they did not. He said the repositioning should start with educational empowerment, enlightenment and skills adding that the last strike embarked upon by the union had only been suspended, but not called off, because the agreement reached with the Federal Government and its impact would be reassessed in 2012. |
Former Oyo State governor, Lam Adesina, has warned northern elements determined to frustrate Vice President Goodluck Jonathan from assuming office as Acting President that they could plunge the country into another civil war. In an exclusive interview with Sunday Sun, he reasoned that the way some people are carrying on “the people of the Niger Delta would soon ask whether they are only good at producing oil but not competent to rule Nigeria.” Adesina, a chieftain of the Action Congress (AC), lamented: “In other civilized countries, whenever the President or a governor is away, his deputy steps in automatically. I did it when I was in office. To make matters worse they are keeping us in the dark over the man’s health issue. “In place of the president, they said the Vice President couldn’t act. Is there no law in Nigeria? Is there no constitution in place? How can some people hold us to ransom in this country? Let them not forget the past; we don’t want to go into another civil war. That is where they are pushing us to if the people of Niger Delta decide to react. He blamed the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the raging controversy that has trailed President Umaru Yar’Adua’s absence from the country 55 days after he travelled to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment. Said Adesina: “The PDP wants to push Nigeria into another civil war. Let them tell us the full details of what is happening to him. The PDP must be careful. In a banana republic, such things will not even happen. The people will rise and ask that a new person be sworn in. “That is why I say that the PDP must be very careful. They are pushing us too hard and they will soon push the people to the wall. “In the absence of Yar’Adua, Jonathan should be allowed. I was in office before and when I went on leave I delegated power to my deputy. It is in the Constitution. So why are we toying with the Constitution?” |
