Health / Six Foods You Should Run Away From During Early Pregnancy To Avoid Miscarriage by honayoplenty(m): 2:44pm On Mar 11, 2018
SIX FOODS YOU SHOULD RUN AWAY FROM DURING EARLY PREGNANCY TO AVOID MISCARRIAGE

Pregnancy is a wonderful time in a woman’s life. It is also filled with questions. There are many worries that comes to your mind. One of this is food. What is safe to eat during pregnancy? What food should be avoided?

We've compiled a list of six foods to avoid during early pregnancy.
1. Fish/Seafood with Mercury
Fish is good for you. They are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. However, fish with high levels of mercury isn’t good. Fish and seafood high in mercury are very bad in pregnancy. They are the worst foods to cause miscarriage. You should strictly avoid these during pregnancy. Some of the fish to be avoided are shark and swordfish. You should also avoid crab. King mackerel and tile fish should also be kept out.
Canned, chunk light tuna is low in mercury content. However, pregnant women should limit consumption.

2. Processed and Under cooked Meat
This is another no-no during pregnancy. Processed meats can include:
*pate
*sausages
*stuffed meats
*deli meat
If you love meat, you need to restrict yourself during pregnancy. Processed meats are known to contain a bacteria – toxoplasma gondii. This can cause toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage.
To avoid ingesting this bacteria make sure to cook the meats well. Refrigerated meats must be heated up to 73 degree Celsius. Only then it is safe for consumption. Moderation is key to eating meats during pregnancy. Maintain some restrictions on meat consumption to avoid miscarriage.

3. Pineapple
It is one of the most dangerous foods. It is a known cause of early miscarriage. Pregnant
women should avoid pineapple juice in early pregnancy. It is known to cause miscarriage especially in the first three months of pregnancy. Pineapple contains bromelain. This substance causes softening of the uterine and contractions . It creates a substance that is responsible for causing miscarriage. Pregnant women should avoid pineapple. Especially during the first threemonths of the pregnancy.

4. Unpasteurized Milk
Unpasteurized raw milk contains listeria bacteria. This is one of the most common causes of miscarriage. It is a major miscarriage causing factor in early pregnancy. Listeria bacteria is very dangerous. It can cross the placenta and infect your fetus. Unpasteurized milk can cause severe infections to the fetus. It can even cause blood poisoning. These infections can cause miscarriage. It can fatally harm your fetus. It is best to avoid unpasteurized milk during early pregnancy. In fact, it is better not to consume it during the entire pregnancy.

5. Alcohol
Regular consumption of alcohol can lead to miscarriage. Regular drinking during pregnancy is a leading cause of early miscarriage. During pregnancy the alcohol in your bloodstream passes to your fetus. This causes your fetus to have the same blood alcohol level as you. This is highly dangerous because babies body system do not have the ability to process alcohol like adults. It is very detrimental to the growth of the fetus. Some doctors say occasional drinking is ok. Others are strictly against the idea. It is best to avoid alcohol during pregnancy.

6. Raw Eggs
Eggs are well known for their health benefits. They are one of the best sources of essential nutrients during pregnancy. It is needed for having a healthy pregnancy. However, raw or under cooked eggs can be equally bad for your pregnancy. Raw or under cooked eggs can have salmonella. It is a type of bacteria that can cause severe illnesses. These include:
*Diarrhea
*Poisoning
*Fever
*Abdominal pains
*Miscarriage
Avoid foods that have raw eggs as an ingredients.

Eating balanced meals is the key to a healthy pregnancy. Moderation is the path to follow with all foods. Anything in excess is to be avoided during this time. Raw, uncooked, and under cooked foods are a strict no-no.

Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns. Do not self-administer medicines and vitamins. Excess of vitamins and minerals is very bad for pregnancy. Consult your doctor instead of self- diagnosing symptoms. Be careful and maintain moderation.

Health / Insomnia ( A Sleep Disorder) by honayoplenty(m): 2:02pm On Mar 11, 2018
INSOMNIA ( SLEEP DISORDER)

Insomnia is a sleep disorder where the sufferer finds it difficult to fall and/or stay asleep. People with insomnia have one or more of the following symptoms:

*Difficulty falling asleep.
*Waking up often during the night and having trouble getting back to sleep.
*Waking up too early in the morning.
*Feeling tired upon waking.

TYPES OF INSOMNIA
There are two types of insomnia: primary insomnia and secondary insomnia.

Primary insomnia: This is when the sufferer has sleep problems that are not directly associated with any other health condition or problem.
Secondary insomnia: This is when the sufferer has sleep problems because of something else, such as a health condition like asthma , depression , arthritis , cancer or heartburn ; pain ; medicine being taken; or a substance being used, like alcohol.

CAUSES OF INSOMNIA
Causes of insomnia can include:
*Significant life stress (such as losing or changing your job, death of a loved one, divorce , moving home).
*Illness.
*Emotional or physical discomfort.
*Environmental factors like noise, light or extreme temperatures(hot or cold) that interfere with sleep.
*Some medicines (for example those used to treat colds, allergies, depression , high blood pressure and asthma ) may interfere with sleep.
*Interferences in your normal sleep routine (such as jet lag or switching from a day to night shift).
*Depression and/or anxiety .
*Chronic stress.
*Pain or discomfort at night.

SYMPTOMS OF INSOMNIA
Symptoms of insomnia can include:
*Sleepiness during the day.
*General tiredness.
*Irritability.
*Problems with concentration or memory.

DIAGNOSING INSOMNIA
If you think you have insomnia, talk to your doctor. He or she may carry out an evaluation which may include a medical history, sleep history, and physical examination. You may be asked to keep a sleep diary for a week or two, keeping track of your sleep patterns and how you feel during the day. Your doctor may want to interview your bed partner about the quantity and quality of your sleep. In some cases, you may be referred to a sleep centre for special tests.

TREATMENT FOR INSOMNIA
Acute insomnia may not require treatment. Mild insomnia can often be prevented or cured by practising good sleep habits. If your insomnia makes it hard for you to function during the day because you are sleepy and tired, your doctor may prescribe sleeping pills for a limited time. Rapid onset, short-acting medications can help you avoid side effects such as drowsiness the following day.
Treatment for chronic insomnia includes first treating any underlying conditions or health problems that are causing the insomnia. If insomnia continues, your doctor may suggest behavioural therapy. Behavioural approaches help you to change behaviour that may worsen insomnia and to learn new behaviour to promote sleep. Techniques such as relaxation exercises, sleep restriction therapy and reconditioning may be useful.

Health / 6 Foods To Avoid If You Have High Blood Pressure Popularly Known As Hypertension by honayoplenty(m): 10:36am On Mar 11, 2018
6 FOODS TO AVOID IF YOU HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE POPULARLY KNOWN AS HYPERTENSION

What is high blood pressure?
Blood pressure measures the force of the blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Your blood pressure rises with each heartbeat and falls when your heart relaxes between beats.
While the number can fluctuate from minute to minute with changes in posture, exercise, stress or food, it should normally be less than 120/80 mmHg. If higher than this, you could be diagnosed of high blood pressure by your doctor. (Hg is the pressure that one millimeter (mm) of mercury (Hg) exerts.)
The good news is that most people can bring down their blood pressure naturally by adjusting their diet.
We've compiled a list of 6 foods to avoid if you have high blood pressure or just want to minimize your chances of getting high blood pressure.

(Warning: This list may include foods you love to eat)

1.Baked Goods
Those packed glossy sweet goods that sometimes come with colorful icing and sprinkles are enticing, but with salted saturated fats, sugar, and sodium-rich leavening agents, they are anything but good for you.
Eating too many baked goods frequently like pastries, cakes, and cookies can also lead to obesity, which aggravates the high blood pressure problem further. This is a no.

2. Canned Tomato Products
Both canned tomato sauce and canned tomato juice are loaded with sodium. One cup of tomato juice has 680 milligrams of sodium, while one serving of spaghetti with meat sauce contains 1,300 milligrams of sodium.
To make matters worse, it's hard to only have one serving of tomato sauce because it's even harder to have just one serving of pasta. Most people don't know that one serving of pasta is one-half cup of cooked pasta. Restaurants regularly serve four cups of pasta per dish, which is a whopping 8 servings.

3. Noodles
Cup noodles or any another pre- packaged noodle meal is popular among college students and lazy adults but highly damaging to your body. One package of generic noodles contains 14 grams of fat and a whopping 1,580 mg of sodium. The tiny flavor/seasoning packet that comes with it is the major culprit, containing most of the sodium.

4. Alcohol
Everybody loves happy hour, but alcohol consumption actively causes blood pressure to elevate. It also damages the walls of the blood vessels while simultaneously increasing risks of further complications, making it a horrible choice for adults with high blood pressure. Don't do it. Beer bellies aren't cute.

5.Donuts
Oh no! The donuts you love are indeed one of the foods to avoid if you have high blood pressure or just want to be a healthy person. The ring-shaped fried dough snack is worse than many other snacks in the market. And no, you can't just have one because one donut can have more than 300 calories with 42% fat and 54% carbs.
Being fried, it contains lots of saturated and trans fats. more trans fat than peanut butter, chocolate bars or even chips. For all of these reasons and more, donuts need to be avoided for a healthy heart.

6. Whole Milk
Didn't expect to see this one on the list, did you? Milk is a great source of calcium, but high-fat dairy sources, like whole milk, provides you more fat than you need. One cup serving of whole milk has about 8 grams of fat, 5 grams of which are saturated.
Saturated fats are worse for you than other types and has been linked to heart disease. Try using 2% milk or, even better, 1% or skim.

Nairaland / General / 8 Reasons You Should Take A Daily Walk by honayoplenty(m): 11:38pm On Mar 10, 2018
8 REASONS YOU SHOULD TAKE A DAILY WALK

I always feel suprise when people drive across town every weekends the gym, hunt around for a place to park, change their clothes, sign up for a treadmill, and wait in line to use it. all just to take a 30 minutes walk Not that there's anything wrong with walking. Walking's great. But I have a theory that making such a big production of it makes it more work than fun, more exercise than pleasure. Plus, the best thing about walking is that it's so simple. Why complicate it ? Here are 8 reasons you should take a daily walk

1. It's Free
Walking is as close to free as it gets. You don't need fancy shoes, or clothes, or equipment. If you head straight out your front door, a walk will only cost you some time and a little rubber off the bottom of your shoes.

2. It's good for Your Blood Sugar
In terms of the health benefits, even a little walk goes a long way. Several studies over the past few years have found that as little as 15 minutes of walking after a meal will improve digestion and even out blood sugar levels.

3. Its good for Your Brain
A brief walk can melt mental fatigue , improve memory , and even help stave off the progress of Alzheimer's disease . We often spend much of the day thinking and worrying. Taking a walk is a way to leave it all behind.

4. It makes you fit
A major meta-analysis conducted by the researchers at the University of Michigan and published in "The Annals of Family Medicine" in 2008 compiled the results of nine different studies to conclude that pedometer-based walking programs resulted in weight loss. The longer participants kept a regular walking schedule going, the more weight they were likely to lose. It's easy to assume that being "fit" has to involve super- intense "boot camp" classes or marathon training, but the reality is that high intensity isn't for everyone, and it definitely isn't for all the time.

5. For healthy bones
A 1994 study by researchers at Tufts University found out that women with a high risk of osteoporosis who walked at least 7.5 miles per week had higher bone density — not just in their legs, but in their whole bodies — than women who walked less than a mile per week. Your bones respond to weight- bearing activity. Walking seems almost too easy, but it fits the bill.

6. Vitamin D
You've probably heard all about the importance of vitamin D to overall health. The best source? A few minutes of sunlight on your face and hands. A short afternoon walk should do the trick.

7. You Can Do It Any Time
Sometimes I walk first thing in the morning. Sometimes I do it in the afternoon or before dinner. The point is that there's really no excuse not to walk because you can do it any time.

8. The Best Part? You Never Know Where It'll Take You
It's while I'm walking that I notice the frost on the grass, or a rabbit hiding behind a tree, or the moon peeking out from behind the clouds. It's when I'm walking that I get a great idea, or realize that the one I thought was great is actually pretty lame. I've explored the neighborhood where I live, and admired and fantasized about the ones I'd like to move to. I guess that's why walking is such a well-worn metaphor for life. You might not know where you're headed. All you've got to do is keep putting one foot in front of the other..
