Nigeria faces tough Congo test The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria face a tough examination of their title ambitions in Marrakech on Saturday when they clash against Congo in a must win match for both sides if they are to entertain any hopes of qualification to the semi- finals. Group B of the CAF U-17 Championship winds up on Saturday with all four sides, Cote d’ Ivoire, Nigeria, Congo and Ghana still able to reach the semis. After seeing their fantastic start to the tournament derailed by Cote d’ Ivoire, the Nigerians are keen to get back to winning ways and coach Manu Garba summed it up saying, “ We all know what is required from this match and l have spelt it out to the boys and we have prepared with this in mind and now we wait to see what happens and by God’s grace we shall prevail. We have to take care of our game without having to wait on results elsewhere to get to the semis” Nigeria Football Federation President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari weighed in with words of encouragement to the players telling them to live up to their pre- tournament high rating by winning their next game against Congo and secure qualification to the World Cup. “It was unfortunate that you lost to Cote d’ Ivoire but this is just a setback and a wakeup call but we have faith in you which remains unshaken and I know you will make it up when you play against Congo and all Nigeria will be behind you” said Maigari Congo meanwhile have declared that they saw how Cote d’ Ivoire played against Nigeria and will be out to bring more misery on the Nigerians. The added incentive of winner takes all makes it a game worthy fighting for and neither side will want to give an inch in what has come down to more of a Cup final match. Congo currently sits on two points while Nigeria is on three. But Congo will have to make changes to replace Antoni Andrely and Francis Okombi who are serving a suspension and with three players already out after failing an MRI test it remains to be seen how much this will affect The Junior Red Devils. Meanwhile, former NFF Vice President Amanze Uchegbulam urged the Golden Eaglets to go all out against Congo on Saturday saying “Everybody has huge expectations about you, so go out and show that your 6-1 win against Ghana was not a fluke when you play against Congo on Saturday. Go and redeem yourselves which l know you are capable of doing“he said In Casablanca Cote d’Ivoire will be engaged in the other Group B battle with Ghana and again both sides will be seeking an outright victory to reach semi-finals. Both matches kick off at the same time. The Group winner will play their next match in Marrakech against Tunisia while second placed side will play in Casablanca against Morocco http://www.cafonline.com/competition/can-u-17_2011/news/16916-nigeria-faces-tough-congo-test.html |

Gabon finishes off with a win over Botswana The Baby Panthers of Gabon picked up their first victory of CAF U-17 Championship with a 3-1 win over Baby Zebras in the last group A match played in Marrakech on Friday. Both teams came into the match unable to reach the semi-finals after losing their first two matches each. Gabon took the lead in the 2nd minute of the game when Macleod Obouoyi pounced on some hesitance in the box to strike home. Botswana were in ascendancy using the left flank to good effect and were rewarded on 37th minute when Thatayaone Ramatlapeng raced ahead of his defender forcing him to make a tackle that fell in the path of Kabelano Mooketsane who drove home the equalize. The baby Zebras who had wrestled the control of the game just before their goal attacked even more boosted by the goal. The wing play from Batswana was troubling the Gabonese. Tumisang Orebonye forced a save from Kosso Menene in goal and the same striker was close to giving the lead to Botswana when he climbed highest to head but was centimeters wide with his effort. Gabon who earlier on had been in the driving seat was struggling to get the ball as Botswana became free visitors in their penalty box. Ramatlapeng sent in a curling free-kick that was head for goal until Menene acrobatically tipped it away for a corner. Against the run of play the dangerous Obouoyi put Gabon back in front with an individual goal. The sure footed striker did well in a packed box, holding onto the ball rounding up Keeagile Kgosipula in goal but with bodies covering the goal Obouoyi had skill and presence to place his shot beyond all for his and Gabon’s second. Gabon’s goal was right on half time. The second half started on same tempo as the end of the last half with both sides playing an open game. A stunning free-kick strike from Andrew Makopo was well watched and saved by Menene while at the other end Bouanga Owane saw his shot just wide. Owane was in the right place at the right time when Makopo who had been playing well for Botswana sliced his attempted clearance from a corner and it fell kindly to Owane who tacked it away from six meters out to make it 3-1 for Gabon. The pendulum swung again with Gabon re-taking control of possession and ball while Botswana tried to recover from the set-back. It was a gutsy display by both sides keen to end their tournament with a good performance. The players gave their all and produced an entertaining match. In the last 15 minutes there were chances to add to the score but there no further goals and Botswana will have to wait a little bit longer to win their first match at U-17 finals. http://www.cafonline.com/competition/can-u-17_2011/news/16905-gabon-finishes-off-with-a-win-over-botswana.html |
Tunisia and Morocco share the spoils in Casablanca Tunisia and Morocco played a 1-1 draw in final group A match played in Casablanca on Friday night. The word of mouth must have worked well as huge numbers of fans finally turned up in Casablanca where they were 15 to 18,000 spectators; mostly young people were in the Mohamed V stadium. Moroccans trooped to the arena after they had heard the praise given to their team after his first two matches which the Atlas Cubs won against Gabon and Botswana, and the fans decided to come and encourage the side and to discover more about the entertaining side. With both teams already guaranteed semi-final places, it only to decide first and second places and the two coaches, the Moroccan Abdellah El Idrissi and Tunisian Abdellay Ben Sultan chose to use those players who had not seen much action or none at all so far. The Moroccan coach explained his position. “We firstly want to stay in Casablanca, and l will rest some players and give a chance to others” Once the game got underway the sides were evenly matched with Tunisians shading play slightly more in their favour but could not breach the Moroccan defense. A good free kick from Walid Sabbar almost gave the hosts the opener but goalkeeper Sabri Ben Hessen saved well. At halftime it was goalless. Morocco threatened again straight from the break and a delightful ball from a corner kick by Mohamed El Bouazzati was crying for a head to nod it home but no-one reacted in time and the chance went begging. The opening goal then arrived when Zakaria El Azzouzi a central defender ventured into the penalty area on a run rounded the keeper and score threw the opened goal much to the delight of the crowd. Two minutes it was Hazem Haj Hassen turn to score the equaliser for Tunisia. There were no further goals and both sides settled for the draw which left Morocco top of the standings and Tunisia on equal points but inferior goal difference in second place. The two sides now wait to conclusion of Group B matches on Saturday to find out who they face in the semi-finals. What is known for now is that Morocco remains in Casablanca while Tunisia travels to Marrakech for semis. http://www.cafonline.com/competition/can-u-17_2011/news/16915-tunisia-and-morocco-share-the-spoils-in-casablanca.html |
