SportsArsenal Legend, Henry Set To Become Next Egypt Football Coach by Hotsports(op): 5:39pm On Aug 01, 2018
The Egyptian Football Association confirmed that they are in talks with Thierry Henry to become the national team’s new coach.

Henry who had a wonderful time as an assistant coach to the Belgium national team at the Russia 2018 World Cup, quit his role as a football pundit for Skysport as he wants to concentrate on his coaching career, a move which has attracted many offers for the former French international.

The Arsenal legend had appeared set to become Aston Villa boss last week, only for the Championship club to keep faith with existing manager Steve Bruce.

The Egyptian FA have however decided to hire him as a replacement to Hector Cuper who was sacked following the poor performance of the team during the World Cup with Nader El-Sayed claiming that Henry is currently considering the offer.

He said, “We had a meeting with Thierry Henry’s agent in London, and Hazem Emam was present.

“Henry is waiting to hear about the EFA’s project for the team before deciding on the offer.

“[That is] apart from the economic aspect.”

The 40-year-old is still Belgian national team’s assistant coach.

SportsDangote Vows To Buy Arsenal Football Club By 2020 by Hotsports(op): 4:02pm On Jul 25, 2018
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote insists he will buy over Arsenal Football Club when he is able to muster the funds in the next two years.

Dangote who has nursed the ambition to own the top English Premier League club for years told Reuters Wednesday that he remained committed to owning the club despite current developments that have seen Russian billionaire, Alisher Usmanov ready to sell off his 30% shares to largest shareholder, Stan Kroenke who is reported to own about 67.9% of the club’s shares.

Dangote who is worth a whopping £15.8billion (about £10.4billon) according to the influential, Forbes said he was certain he would be able to convince the current owners to relinquish their hold on the club if he makes a mouth-watering offer they won’t resist, especially when he starts to make returns on his current investments on a multi-billion dollar refinery he is building in Lagos, Nigeria.

“We will go after Arsenal from 2020…even if somebody buys, we will still go after it,” he had been quoted as saying.

And speaking last August, Dangote was convinced Kroenke would be prepared to sell his stake in Arsenal.

“If they get the right offer, I’m sure they would walk away,” he said

“Someone will give them an offer that will make them seriously walking away.

“And when we finish the refinery, I think we will be in a position to do that,” he had added.

SportsJuventus Make $60m From Ronaldo Jersey Sales In 24 Hours by Hotsports(op): 4:51pm On Jul 17, 2018
Italian giants, Juventus have started reaping the dividends of breaking the bank to sign Cristiano Ronaldo for a 4-year-deal worth £112 million.

Ronaldo had his medical on Monday at the Juventus medical centre in Turin before he addressed the media for the first time as a Juve player and the club has already raked in $60m worth of merchandise within 24 hours for the sales of the Portuguese No. 7 jersey.

A large number of Juventus fans adorned the No. 7 jersey to greet their new hero while others wore t-shirts with an inscription of “Bem-Vindo” meaning welcome in Portuguese. About 5,000 shopkeepers were reported to have decorated their stores with Ronaldo’s picture while one local ice-cream parlour has even created a “CR7” cone, featuring Portuguese cherry liquor and chocolate shavings.

An Italian media reported that Juventus had already sold 520, 000 Ronaldo’s No. 7 jersey even though he is yet to kick a ball which could surpass the club’s 850,000 jersey sales for the entire 2016 season.

Real Madrid sold 1.2 million shirts with ‘Ronaldo 9’ jersey when he signed for the Spanish giant in 2010 as the club made an income of around £100 million.

Business5 Critical Issues Affecting Nigerian Businesses- Employers Association President by Hotsports(op): 10:17am On Jul 17, 2018
PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS AT THE 61ST ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF NIGERIA EMPLOYERS' CONSULTATIVE ASSOCIATION (NECA) ON TUESDAY, 17TH JULY, 2018 AT NECA HOUSE.

I. PREAMBLE
May I warmly welcome you all to the 61st Annual General Meeting of our Association. We are delighted to have in our midst the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator (Dr.) Chris Nwabueze Ngige and the reformist Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr. Babatunde Fowler, who is also our Keynote Speaker this year.

I also want to specially welcome our Social Partners, the Nigeria Labour Congress President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba and his Trade Union Congress counterpart, Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama. Let me acknowledge the fact that our partnership and camaraderie over the years have resulted in laudable outcomes for the enhancement of the welfare of the workers and the promotion of sustainable enterprise. I acknowledge the presence of the Director, Area Office (Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone and The Gambia), of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Mr. Dennis Zulu, Directors-General of all arms of the Organized Private Sector, Heads of Sectoral Groups, Members of the Management Committee of NECA, Esteemed members of the NECA Governing Council, generality of NECA Member-Companies, our Special Guests, Gentlemen of the Press, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen.

The clock has turned around so quickly and it is hard to believe that another year is gone in the contemporary history of our economy. Though economic data and statistics may point to the fact that our economy is out of the woods of recession and we are beginning to inch up on the growth trajectory, the fact and reality, however, of most businesses and the welfare of the generality of Nigerians seems to suggest that the "green shoots" are far from sprouting.

II. REVIEW OF THE ECONOMY IN 2017
The GDP growth of 0.83% as against IMF projection of 0.8% recorded in 2017, according to the National Bureau for Statistics (NBS), was driven by growth in crop production, crude oil production and natural gas; metal ore, construction, transportation and storage, trade, electricity and gas production. Owing to recovering oil production and new investments in the agricultural sector, the country ended with a marginal growth rate in 2017. In reality, it was more of a reflection of increased oil production due to security improvements in the country's Niger Delta region. Nevertheless, the token growth in 2017 serve as a good foundation for future growth if the fundamentals and policy that facilitated the 2017 growth are kept and continuously improved upon.

The inflation rate, measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), dropped to 15.37 per cent in December 2017 from 15.90 per cent recorded in November of the same year. It is noteworthy that the inflation rate has continued to fall declining to 11.61% by May 2018
Nigeria’s external reserves rose to $37.92 billion by 2017 year end, a remarkable improvement also attributable to higher oil earnings. Reported external reserves of $47.61 billion at end of May, 2018 is encouraging.

III. OUTLOOK FOR 2018
The economy continued to be dogged by the perennial bad habit of delay in passage of the budget. The grave implication of this is the loss of momentum and impetus to consolidate on the gains of the previous year. It is, therefore, not surprising that the projected GDP growth rate for 2018 is already being reviewed downward.

A cursory look at the 2018 budget shows that government's recurrent expenditure as a percentage of total federal government expenditure stands at a staggering 69.2%, an increase from 68.27% in 2017. We don't think this a healthy expenditure pattern; a clear indication that government is yet to accord the issue of infrastructural improvement the importance it deserves through adequate fiscal support.

The National Budget as recently passed showed that the debt service provision (including sinking fund) is the third (N2.233trillion) largest component of the 2018 expenditure framework, representing 25.94% or approximately a quarter (N8.61trillion) of the entire budget. The N2.233trillion cost of debt servicing is about 33.80% of total expected revenue (N6.606.89trillion), indicating that debt service may soon be back to the pre-debt relief period. The capital vote (inclusive of transfers) of N2.652trillion is just a little higher (30.80%) than debt service. We are very worried that for the third consecutive year, the rising cost of debt servicing is in the top three allocations in the national budget. In the last three years, the government has had a budget of about N18.012trillion (2015:4.493trilllion, 2016:6.077trillion and 2017: 7,441trillion); of which debt service alone took an average of 23.71%, more than one-fifth – N18.012trillion, leaving N13.741 trillion for recurrent and capital expenditures.

Though our debt level as a percentage of the GDP seems in order, we consider the debt to revenue ratio unhealthy and unsustainable. We, therefore, advise the government to tame its appetite for more leverage. In fact the World Bank in its recent Global Economic Prospects Report had noted with dismay that the current optimism over Nigeria's economic recovery is tempered by huge debt servicing and foreign exchange controls. Specifically, the cost of servicing Nigeria's debts on both the domestic and external fronts has risen, in contrast to the revenue earned by the government. The bigger concern is the possible unsustainability of such debt servicing. While the debt servicing costs in other economies remain sustainable, that of Nigeria is being dragged down by forex depreciation and increased recourse to non-concessional borrowing for infrastructure development.

While we encourage efforts to improve non-oil revenue generation as the most realistic way to reduce the debt service/revenue ratio, as articulated by the Economic Recovery Growth Plan (ERGP), we, however, caution government not to raise revenue by increasing the tax rate for organised businesses and the working class. Rather more people should be brought into the tax net by expanding the base. Indeed, improving the national revenue base is key to avoiding continued reliance on borrowing to fund capital projects. Ongoing efforts to expand our tax to GDP ratio are also welcome. Nigeria's tax to GDP ratio, which currently stands at 6 percent, is one of the lowest in the world and inconsistent with the goal of having a diversified, sustainable and inclusive economy. At least 15 percent of tax to GDP ratio is required to achieve sustained growth.

We commend the Federal Government on its efforts at improving the Ease of Doing Business (EODB) as evidenced by the setting up of the Presidential Enabling Business Council (PEBEC); the crafting of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) and the signing of five Executive Orders (EOs). We welcome the good news that the EODB in Nigeria is improving as evidenced by the country's movement by 24 points from 170th position in 2016 ranking to 145 in the World Bank's Doing Business Report of 2018; though the success recorded can be improved upon when compared with other developing African countries like Kenya, ranked 92, Ghana-108, and Mali at 145.

We, most importantly, request Government, not to further burden the Private Sector with more taxes in its drive to meet the N6.7trillion revenue target for 2018. At the last count, businesses in Nigeria are encumbered with the payment of over fifty-five (55) different taxes at the three levels of government. The incidence of double taxation, particularly consumption tax, has assumed a very dangerous dimension, which we expect the Federal Government to rein in through an appropriate statutory or policy declaration.

IV. KEY NATIONAL ISSUES OF INTEREST TO BUSINESSES

1. The Unending Saga of Fuel Subsidy Regime
Following government's policy declaration in 2016 of the enthronement of deregulation in the oil and gas downstream sector of the economy, a policy initiative that was commended by all and sundry, the stakeholders in the economy actually thought that at last the market dynamics would henceforth be allowed to dictate the prices and supply of petroleum products in the economy.
In the light of the current circumstance of monopoly of the supply of fuel products by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the negative price variance between pump price and landing price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which has resulted in NNPC's "under recovery of cost" amounting to almost N1.7 trillion, it is very evident that after all government has not been faithful to its policy and the subsidy regime is back in a far more vicious form. It is indeed worrying that the funding mechanism for this new dispensation is shrouded in opaqueness. We, therefore, expect the government to be transparent in its management of this new subsidy dispensation.
We wish to affirm that the way to the future still remains de-regulation and we hope the government will summon the necessary political will to allow market factors to drive the operation of the downstream oil and gas sector.

2. Increased Insecurity
One constant feature of news item in the last 18 months is the upsurge in blood bath, killing and general insecurity with attendant negative consequences for businesses, employment generation and attracting foreign direct investment. The embers of these security challenges are stoked by violent crimes, ethno-religious conflicts, resource-based conflicts, trans-border criminal activities, and election-induced violence even as we approach the election year of 2019. All these undoubtedly pose serious threats to the social, economic and political stability of not only Nigeria, but also of the African continent, especially the West African sub-region. This development is significantly undermining government's efforts to create an enabling environment for wealth creation, enterprise competitiveness and job creation.
A research by NECA and 'Enhancing Nigerian Advocacy for a Better Business Environment' (ENABLE) on the "Effects of State Regulations and Insecurity on Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCGs) Market in Northern Nigeria" in 2016 showed alarming trend of loss or closure of businesses, reduced consumer purchasing power, massive loss of employment and other consequences due to insecurity. If these effects were synonymous with insecurity in 2016, we can imagine how bad the situation was in 2017 and would be at the end of 2018.

SportsRafiu Ladipo Accuses NFF Of Corruption, Sold Nigerian Ticket To Argentina Fans by Hotsports(op): 8:39pm On Jun 30, 2018
Dr Rafiu Ladipo, President of The Nigeria Football Supporters Club, has blamed the Nigeria Football Federation for the Super Eagles’ early exit from the Russia 2018 World Cup following their 2-1 defeat to Argentina in Saint Petersburg.

According to Ladipo, the federation must take the blame for the World Cup ouster because “they don’t understand the politics of the game.”

It will be observed that Saint Petersburg Stadium, venue of the epic last group match rocked throughout the clash with Argentinian fans intimidating presence but for a handful of Nigeria fans scattered in three corners of the massive stadium that cheered on the Nigeria side.

The NFSC President-General Rafiu Ladipo, called for the Federal Government to restructure football administration in the country.

Ladipo said “This is the worst NFF we have had in the history of football in the country. At USA ’94, France ’98 and 2014 World Cups we got to the second round.

“This time around we didn’t get to the second round due to the bad administration of the game in the country by the current NFF.

“It’s too bad the Eagles are out of the World Cup, it was avoidable,”

“Unfortunately we have people in the NFF who think they know everything but they don’t understand the politics of the game.

“How come FIFA gave a big football country like Nigeria only 4,500 match tickets? We saw Argentines everywhere in the stadium and everywhere in Saint Petersburg.”

But out of the 4,500 “The NFF gave us only 200 tickets for the match. We were scattered in the corners of the stadium because we were not given a block match ticket, and that is where the politics of the game comes in.

“The Eagles were denied our support because of the situation we found ourselves. Argentina came in large numbers to support their team to victory because they have people who understand the politics of the game and encourage their supporters to storm the stadium to save the country from an early exit from the tournament.

After collecting billions of naira from the Federal Government, “The only people who came to support the Eagles are the supporters’ club members. But the NFF abandoned us and instead sponsored persons who had no business with our World Cup campaign in Russia.

“We must restructure Nigerian football and get rid of administrators who have nothing to offer.”

Ladipo asked the NFF to explain to Nigerians why they sponsored persons who spent time in Russia loafing about their hotels.

“The NFF should explain what they did with the billions they got from the government.”

An Abakaliki based medical doctor, Kennis Ebirim, a family physician with the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, reportedly died after watching Tuesday’s 2018 World Cup match between Nigeria and Argentina.

The deceased was reported to have slumped and rushed to hospital after Nigeria crashed out of the world football tournament.

Family members, colleagues and neighbours confirmed the death of Ebirim to the News Agency of Nigeria at his residence in Owerri.

Dr Chikere Ebirim, a lecturer in the Department of Public Health, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, and younger brother to the deceased, expressed shock over the development.

He said: “We were together on Sunday with my dad. He used to have cases of heart attack but he was also on medication.

“This is so shocking because he was sound in health when he left Owerri on Monday morning for Abakaliki where he works.”

Dr Hyacinth Emele, the immediate past Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Imo state branch, also confirmed the incident to NAN, describing it as a heavy blow to the association.

“The NMA in Imo and indeed in Nigeria is in deep shock. This is a heavy blow. More than just a colleague, he was a brother, one who could never hurt a fly,” he said.

On the possible cause of the doctor’s death, Emele said: “Dr Ebirim has been a hypertensive patient who has also been on medication.

“What happened to him is what we call sudden death syndrome which most times are caused by a cardiac arrest.

“As a patriotic Nigerian who is passionate about his country just like many of us including me, it is possible the outcome of that match may have triggered the confusion in his system, causing him to slump.

Sports5 Youngest Players To Ever Play For Super Eagles At The World Cup by Hotsports(op): 8:31pm On Jun 22, 2018
The Nigerian football national team often pride itself with the inclusion performing youngsters in the senior team during Africa and World football tournaments. This act is a major factor in the growth and experience in subsequent competitions.

Over the years, these youngsters have proven to become Nigeria’s great players. The exploit of the likes of Kanu Nwankwo, Jay-Jay Okocha and Sunday Oliseh at USA 94’ World Cup and the Olympic Gold winning team at Atlanta 96’ will always be an eye opener on the reliance of younger players in the national team.

Nigeria football teams are reputed heavyweights in age grade competition, having won the FIFA Under-17 championship in a record five times and many other triumphs on the continent.

Age discrepancy has been a major factor in Nigeria’s failure to repeat same successes in the senior national team. However, many Super Eagles have developed from the grassroots to become a household name.

The Super Eagles will be the youngest squad at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. A feat achieved as a result of the blend between players who were born or grew abroad (Leon Balogun, Victor Moses, Troost Ekong, Tyronne Ebuehi etc) and player who proved the mettle in the country before their sojourn outside the shores of Nigeria.

Here are 5 youngest Nigerian players to have ever featured in a FIFA World Cup

Sports19-year-old Super Eagles Goalkeeper Breaks World Cup Record Against Iceland by Hotsports(op): 8:12pm On Jun 22, 2018
Super Eagles goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho has equalled the record of the youngest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in World Cup history following Eagles 2-0 wins against Iceland in Volgograd on Friday.

The first young goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in the World Cup was a North Korean goalkeeper, Li Chan-Myong who was 19 years and 198 days old when he famously shut out the Italians from scoring in 1966.

Uzoho who is making his first appearance in the World Cup conceded two goals in the opening game against Croatia but was at his best on Friday as he put up a fantastic performance to deny Iceland from scoring.

Nigeria will play Argentina in their last group game June 26 at Saint Petersburg.

Chuka and Amaka Iwobi, parents of Nigeria’s Super Eagles forward, Alex Iwobi, arrived in Volgograd on Wednesday night, ahead of the Arsenal star’s World Cup game against Iceland on Friday.

The player’s father, Chuka, his mother, Amaka, and his sister, Marie, reportedly came into the city via an Aeroflot flight from Moscow.

The Iwobis came to town to cheer their son in a must-win game against Iceland in order to keep alive their World Cup hopes.

Nigeria lost 2-0 against Croatia in their opening game in Kaliningrad last Saturday with many fans criticising coach Gernot Rohr for deploying Alex in a more defensive role.

But the German praised the 22-year-old for maintaining a balance between his offensive and defensive play.

SportsBeer Scarcity Hit Moscow, As World Cup Fans Go On Drinking Spree by Hotsports(op): 2:42pm On Jun 21, 2018
Beer-guzzling football fans risk drinking parts of Moscow dry, with some bars and restaurants in the Russian capital saying they are running low and having to wait longer than usual for fresh supplies.

According to Moscow Times, the Russian capital city has been transformed by the World Cup, with singing, chanting and beer-swilling fans overwhelming some of the packed bars and restaurants around the Kremlin and Red Square.

“We just didn’t think they would only want beer,” said one waiter at an upscale eatery in central Moscow who asked not to be identified for fear of scaring off future customers.

The waiter said his restaurant ran out of draft lager on Monday and deliveries are taking longer than usual, at least 24 hours, because suppliers’ stocks are also running low.

“There are really a lot of people in Moscow … and they are all drinking,” he said. “It’s hot, and it’s football.”

Beer sales in Russia have fallen by around a third over the past as duties have risen and rules been tightened on sales and advertising. Brewers had not been expecting a major reversal of the trend this year.

Baltika, the Russian unit of Carlsberg, said although there was an increased risk of supply disruption during the World Cup, its business had not been affected.

Heineken said sales were so far going well and it did not yet see any challenges supplying its beer.

Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s biggest brewer and an official FIFA sponsor for the World Cup, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Dmitry, a barman at trendy courtyard bar Gogol, said visiting football fans had drunk 800 litres of beer in three days, downing the cheap lager before moving on to more expensive bottled beers.

Gogol was taking three deliveries on Tuesday to replenish supplies, he said, as workers busily unpacked boxes of beer, vodka and whiskey from a nearby van.

“The sun makes them thirsty,” he said of his customers. “In Russian, we say ‘to the bottom!’ I like that these guys are embracing our culture.”

Ivan, a Croatian in Russia to see his team take on Argentina on Thursday, said he had yet to encounter any shortages.

“There is beer everywhere,” he said, swigging from a can of Russian Zhiguli lager whilst sitting on a bench near the Bolshoi Theatre. “Some places yes, some places no. You just have to know where to find it!”

SportsRonaldo’s Strike Sends African Country Out Of World Cup by Hotsports(op): 6:19pm On Jun 20, 2018
Cristiano Ronaldo struck again, his fourth goal in two matches, to send Morocco out of the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup Monday at the Luzhniki stadium on Wednesday.

The North Africans, coming into the game after losing their first group game to 1950 champions, Uruguay last week, were expected to win to keep their hopes of continuing in the competition alive, but coming up against a Ronaldo- inspired Portugal was always going to be a tasty proposition.

The Moroccans who incidentally are the only African team to have beaten the current European champions in a World Cup match when they met at Mexico’86, would however prove to be no match for the Portuguese who made sure they extracted the vital three points necessary to progress after their sensational 3–3 draw with Spain in their opening game.

Interestingly, the Moroccans previous two wins in the tournament were against European opposition, but they would come up dismally short this time, despite dominating the game, especially in the second period for long spells.

The Africans, therefore, became the first African team, despite Egypt’s precarious placing, after also losing two games, to be eliminated, having not scored any goal, and amassed no points to stay on in the competition.

Their third and final game comes up against former champions, Spain on Monday.
Ronaldo has now scored a total of seven goals in four World Cup appearances, having scored against Iran, at Germany 2006, North Korea, at South Africa 2010 and Ghana at Brazil 2014.

The 28-year-old had received the MBE honour also in 2013 after winning an Olympic gold medal at the London 2012 games where he announced himself to the boxing world.

Joshua is scheduled to fight Russian boxer, Alexander Povetkin as mandated by the WBO should his much talked about undisputed unification bout with Deontay Wilder fails to yield positive talks.

Joshua is insisting on a more realistic negotiation from Wilder’s camp be met before he will accept any challenge from the Bronze Bomber.

Sports4 Ways MKO Abiola (GCFR) Contributed To Sports In Nigeria by Hotsports(op): 12:16pm On Jun 08, 2018
Many people remember the late Chief M.K.O.Abiola as mostly a politician as well as a passionate philanthropist. What they probably did not know was that he was a man who loved sports even to the point of distraction.

Abiola died in controversial circumstances in 1998, five years after he was jailed by the General Sani Abacha government for trying to claim his mandate in the wake of being declared the winner of the now famous June 12 presidential elections.

But just when it looked like he had been forgotten by successive governments that have benefitted from his unique sacrifice to enshrine sustainable democracy, the one- time Aare Onakankanfo of Yoruba land suddenly resurrected Tuesday as the Federal Government immortalised him, setting aside June 12 every year to honour him.

According to a press release signed by President Muhammadu Buhari, June 12 would henceforth become a public holiday to commemorate the democratic ideals of free, fair and transparent elections that the former business mogul stood for.

This was aside from being posthumously awarded the highly revered Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR)

But beyond the accolades, it should be noted that Abiola is also deserving of awards in sports followership and sponsorship.

Remember the Abiola Babes FC? The late industrialist not only owned one of the most flamboyant club sides of his era, he ensured they made their mark, winning big both on the domestic and continental scene. His unprecedented knack for supporting good causes and helping football thrive in Nigeria had moved the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to honour him as the first Pillar of Sports in Africa.

He also owned the Concord Football Club of Abeokuta as well as several other commitments to the overall development of sports in Nigeria.

Abiola is known to have blazed the trail of Nigerians who genuinely loved sports by actually committing huge resources, in cash and kind, at every opportunity in order to improve the fortune of sports in Nigeria.

Abiola was also a grand patron of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) before his demise.

SportsFG Fulfills Olympic Promise After 22 Years, Gift Bonfrere Jo House At Abuja by Hotsports(op): 9:01am On Jun 07, 2018
The Federal Government has fulfilled his promise to former Super Eagles coach, Bonfrere Jo who led the Dream Team to win the Atlanta ’96 Olympic gold medal.

The minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola handed over a three- bedroom apartment to the Dutchman after 22 years located at Gwagwalada area of Abuja.

Fashola while speaking at a brief handing over ceremony said the gesture by the Nigeria government will go a long way to inspire the Super Eagles at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He said, “Let me on behalf of the President apologize to you that it has taken so long for the Nigerian government to come through. We thank you for your contribution to the development of our country, our youth, football and to say that it is better late than never. Nigeria always comes through, we have come through for you.

“It is proper that with just a few days to another World Cup, Nigeria fulfils and redeems this pledge and I hope that this will serve as an inspiration to our players going to the World Cup and the officials that this government will be there for you all the way.

“Ordinarily, this ought to be a short meeting but if it takes 22 years for the government of the country to respond to its citizens, it must assume a news-making event.

“This is consistent with the commitment that the President has made that once again, he will make Nigerians proud of their country.

“This country should always be there to respond to the needs and expectations of the citizens.”

While accepting the apartment, elated Bonfrere Jo thanked the Federal Government and said the kind gesture would go a long way to encourage sportsmen and women to give their best to the nation with the knowledge that their achievements will not go unrewarded.
