Sports / Why Nigeria Can't Afford Julius Berger Bill To Maintain Abuja Stadium by Hotsports: 10:41am On Dec 21, 2018
The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports said it is considering the option of involving private companies in maintaining the Abuja National Stadium because of the N2bn requested by construction giant, Julius Berger is beyond what the ministry can afford.

The National Stadium which was abandoned due to lack of maintenance was used for the just concluded 2018 National Sports Festival.

The permanent secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Olusade Adesola noted that the poor state of the stadium was due to the huge figures construction company, Julius Berger demanded to maintain it.

And because the ministry cannot afford to be paying the N2 billion annual maintenance bill that caused the overgrown grass in the stadium.

Adesola while speaking with journalists said the stadium received a facelift as some facilities were fixed before the 19th National Sports Festival.

“Julius Berger submitted a maintenance fee of N2 billion annually and this is more than the ministry’s yearly budget.

” We cannot afford such money annually, but we are working hard to find alternative ways to keep the place tidy.

“We are looking at the option of concession to individuals and companies who could manage the place for a period. The complex has to be busy with activities to keep it in good condition.”

Sports / “I Have A Future Without Manchester United" Mourinho Speaks After United Sack by Hotsports: 6:09pm On Dec 19, 2018
Jose Mourinho said on Wednesday he has a “future without Manchester United”, speaking for the first time since he was sacked by the Premier League club.

The Old Trafford hierarchy sacked Mourinho in the aftermath of Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at Anfield that left the 20-times champions an embarrassing 19 points behind league leaders Liverpool after just 17 matches.

But the former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss refused to go into details about his departure.

“I don’t change. And what I did when I left Chelsea, for example, is the same as that I’m going to do now,” Mourinho told Sky Sports News.

“I keep the good things and I don’t speak about anything that happened in the club.

“We could speak about so many good things. It’s finished” he added.

“Manchester United has a future without me and I have a future without Manchester United, so why should I now be sharing with you or even with the supporters, any of my feelings?

“It’s over. That’s me and that’s the way I’ve always been and I was always very critical of managers that leave clubs and then they come out and they speak about details of what happened and who is to blame for this kind of situation — that’s not me. I just want to finish, it happened yesterday and I’d like to say it’s game over.

“And I just hope that you media respect this. Until I get back to football I think I have the right to live my normal life, like I’m going to do now. I go for my little shopping, I go for my little walk and that’s what I want to do. Manchester United is the past.”

Sports / Top 5 Reasons Manchester United Had To Sack Jose Mourinho by Hotsports: 3:31pm On Dec 18, 2018
The termination of Jose Mourinho’s contract with Manchester United on Thursday no doubt came as a result of last Sunday’s shocking 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

The announcement put an inglorious end to a tumultuous stint that began in May 2016 and was characterised by Mourinho’s failure to adhering to the club’s core attacking values.

According to reports monitored on The Guardian, Mourinho was also relieved of his duties due to a transfer spending of about £400m on 11 players that, the club insist were all his choice.

In addition to the concern regarding the side’s boring style, there was further disappointment at Mourinho’s development and improvement of United’s younger players who were not making progress under his negative football style of play.

The club also took into account the growing unhappiness from fans at the direction of the club under Mourinho.

A poor start to the Premier League season, the worst in 28 years, has seen United slip 19 points behind table topers, Liverpool, and fall off the pace in the hunt for a top-four place.

With only one win in six league matches, recording two embarrassing draws with struggling Southampton and Crystal Palace, the club have no option than to wield the big axe.

In two full seasons at Old Trafford, Mourinho won the Europa League and League Cup (2016-17) before finishing second in the Premier League last season and reaching the FA Cup final. In that period since replacing Louis van Gaal, United’s spending stands at £364.3m on eight buys.

Sports / Nigeria Host First Professional Squash Tournament by Hotsports: 7:02pm On Dec 14, 2018
All is now set for the maiden edition of the globally sanctioned OTrafford PSA National Satellite Squash Tournament billed for December 19-22 at the OTrafford Squash Club, inside the 81 Division Army Officers Mess in Marina, Lagos.

At a press briefing to herald the tournament on Friday in Lagos, Chairman of OTrafford Squash Club, Remi Adeseun said the tournament will provide a platform for players to reach out for international exposure and upgrade their career status.

“This is the first ever PSA Closed Satellite squash tournament to be organized by this club.

“There have been other squash competitions in the country, but it has been mainly for the prize money but in O Trafford we decided to use this tournament as a means for Nigerian squash players to gather enough points to get PSA rankings and compete outside the country,” Adeseun said.

“He also noted that the club is putting up plans to develop the game of squash from the grassroots level with a focus on secondary schools, starting from the Lagos Island.

Speaking also at the press conference, President of the Nigeria Squash Federation, Boye Oyerinde commended OTrafford Squash Club for putting up the PSA satellite tournament, which is in line with the vision of the NSF to revive the game and make it more vibrant in Nigeria.

“Part of the problem we have in revitalizing our squash was lack of tournaments for the senior category, that is why we can’t say thank you enough to OTrafford Squash Club. This will be the third tournament we will be having this year after the rankings for the senior category in October 2017,” Oyerinde said.

According to OTrafford Squash Club captain, Biyi Mabadeje, a total of 48 male players and 27 female players have registered for the tournament including two gold medalists from the 2018 National Sports Festival in Abuja. The tournament’s male champion will pocket $1,000 US dollars while the women’s title will get $500 US dollars.

Sports / Crisis Hits Nigerian Football As NNL Threatens To Promote 8 Teams To NPFL by Hotsports: 12:49pm On Dec 10, 2018
The crisis plaguing the Nigerian Professional League seems not to have abated as the league’s lower cadre, the Nigerian National League (NNL) is threatening to promote 8 teams into the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) in the incoming season.

The NPFL came to an abrupt end on match day 24 last season following a prolonged crisis that rocked the NFF after the Russia 2018 World Cup declaring the then league leader, Lobi Stars of Markurdi as the winner and an extension of the decision was not to relegate any team from the NPFL for the season.

But a failure to carry along other arms of the league is resulting in the present crisis because the top 8 teams that were supposed to go for the Super Four competition to determine the four teams to be promoted to the NPFL were not decided and the NNL is now threatening to promote the top 8.

The issue came up for discussion at the NFF board meeting in Asaba the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) mandated NNL chairman Chidi Ofor Okenwa to immediately convene a congress of stakeholders to take a decision which would be ratified by the executive committee in a bid to find a lasting solution to the problems associated with NPFL’s abrupt end to the season in week 24.

But in a strange turn of development, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigeria National league NNL, Bukola Olopade, in a telephone conversation with Nigeria Sports Mouthpiece (NSM), regretted the circumstances that led to this unfortunate situation in our football, insisting that there was no going back on the resolution reached at the NNL congress in Abuja.

”At that meeting, the NNL took the decision not to go ahead with the Super 8 which could have paved way for the best four teams to get promoted to the NPFL, Instead, they had decided that all eight teams must get promoted under the present circumstances.

”In supporting that position, the NNL said the Congress of the NPFL did not consult it before arriving at the decision not to relegate any team, meaning they never recognised the fact that whatever decision they took, will have a direct bearing on the NNL. Based on that, the NNL has pressed the war button as they intend to go toe to toe with the LMC, organisers of the NPFL on this matter.

“We cannot be made to swallow their vomit, Olopade said. We have taken our decision and they must learn to live with it. At the last NFF meeting in Asaba, they asked that we go and take a decision in the best interest of the game and whatever decision we take, they will approve. We have done just that and we see no reason why anyone will want to go contrary.”

“If anything is done, different from the decision reached by the NNL congress in Abuja, I, Bukola Olopade will activate my earlier resignation from the position of chief executive officer, CEO of the NNL with immediate effect.”

”Perhaps you don’t know that I resigned five months ago but was persuaded to stay on by my good friend Amaju Pinnick, till the end of the season.

”I have been asking a few questions and will not stop asking:

Why did the LMC end the league to go to Russia for the World Cup?
Why on earth did they decide to end the season abruptly?
Why did they decide not to relegate any of the 20 teams in the division? Why didn’t they consult us, if they know that we are partners in progress?
Why must the NNL bear the brunt of their actions or inactions?
Where did the NNL go wrong in all of these?
“It is only when they provide answers to my many questions that I will take them seriously, if not, we stand by our decision to promote eight teams and there is no going back on that,” he concluded.

Sports / NFF Fire Up Falcons With Double $10K Bonus To Defeat South Africa In AWCON Final by Hotsports: 9:45am On Nov 30, 2018
The Nigeria Football Federation has opted to double the winning bonus of the Super Falcons as a big incentive ahead Saturday’s 11th Women Africa Cup of Nations Final against the Banyana Banyana of South Africa in Accra.

President of the NFF, Amaju Melvin Pinnick, made the pledge when he met with the players and officials at the AH Hotel, Accra on Thursday, as he delivered the good wishes of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) and the football-loving populace of Nigeria to the Cup holders.

The Falcons had earned $3,000 for a win in the group phase but were earmarked for $5,000 each for victory in the Final.

“I want to let you know that the Government and the good and great people of Nigeria are happy with your performance in the championship so far. They are looking forward to you retaining the trophy by beating South Africa on Saturday.

“Let me commend the lofty commitment, dedication and resilience that you have displayed so far in the championship, alongside that unique Nigerian spirit that was most in evidence against the Cameroonians in the semi-final. You are indeed true champions, and we believe you will retain the Cup on Saturday. Go out there and win on Saturday and earn yourselves $10,000 each, as against the $5,000 that the NFF earlier promised.”

The two captains, Onome Ebi and Rita Chikwelu on behalf of the team expressed gratitude to His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR), the NFF, the Nigeria media and football –loving Nigerians at home and in the diaspora for their support to the team, and pledged that they will overcome the Banyana Banyana in Saturday’s final in order to return to Nigeria with the trophy.

Ebi said: “We have the World Cup ticket now, which was always our first target here. The second is winning the Cup for a third successive time and ninth time overall. It is a mission we are determined to accomplish on Saturday.”

Nigeria defeated South Africa 2-0 in the final of the second edition of the competition in Johannesburg in 2000, to retain the Cup they had won at the inaugural edition in Nigeria two years earlier.

Sports / Barcelona Top Best Paying Football Club In The World [see List] by Hotsports: 10:56am On Nov 27, 2018
Spanish giants, Barcelona is now the highest paying football club in the world spending a whopping sum of £10,454,259 per man in the 2018-19 season.

According to the 2018 edition of the Global Sports Salaries Survey (GSSS) published on Monday, the La Liga champions are number 1 in the world in average basic pay in a survey that includes 349 teams in eight sports across 18 leagues in 13 countries.

Mailonline reported that the Blaugrana’s arch-rival Real Madrid, are No 2 on this year’s pay list, averaging £8.1m, but only two other football teams, Juventus who is at No 10 and Manchester United in No 11 make the top dozen payers, with NBA basketball teams filling the rest of those spots.

A new deal for Messi signed last November pays him more than £50m a year guaranteed until 2021, with a £619m buyout clause.

Gerard Pique, Sergi Roberto, Samuel Umtiti and Sergio Busquets have all signed lucrative extensions this calendar year (all with £442m buyout clauses) and new additions to the Barca wage bill have included Philippe Coutinho, signed from Liverpool in January, and Arthur, Malcolm and Arturo Vidal among others in summer 2018.

However, the publication also showed that the Premier League is the best-paid league ahead of the La Liga and other leagues across Europe with Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal as the highest paying clubs while Cardiff, Huddersfield and Burnley are the lowest paying clubs in the Premier League.

NBA remains comfortably the best-paid sports league in the world by average pay, with Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors and the Washington Wizards as the best paying NBA teams.

The report contains exclusive analysis on sports pay from football analytics firm 21st Club and their sister firm, 15th Club, who work in golf and contributed to Europe’s win over the USA in this year’s Ryder Cup.

Omar Chaudhuri, the head of football intelligence at 21st Club, says Premier League clubs are paying more than twice the transfer fees of counterparts in Spain, Italy, Germany and France for players of the same quality, and this ‘PL Premium’ stretches to wages, where England’s elite often pay two to three times the salaries that their rival leagues pay for players of the same quality.

That NBA trio breaks new ground of their own by becoming the first NBA teams – or indeed American teams from any sport – where average basic pay is more than $10m (US dollars) per player per year.

Sports / Fury Goes On Sex Strike To Regain Senses For Wilder Fight by Hotsports: 4:07pm On Nov 16, 2018
Tyson Fury says he has decided to abstain from sex with his wife to focus more and ensure his senses are at work when he faces WBC champion, Deontay Wilder on December 1 in Los Angeles.

Fury is in Los Angeles already training at Big Bear mountain as he hopes to knockout Wilder and claims the WBC title.

The British fighter in an interview as reported by mailonline said, “It is rare that you have two giants of 6ft 9in in my case and Wilder at 6ft 7in getting ready to punch each other in the face,’ said Fury.

“At some point, we are going to hit each other but I am blessed with this sixth sense for seeing danger coming.

“I don’t want anything to interfere with that between men with our power there is always the danger of brain damage.

“So no, there has been no sex for 12 weeks.’

“I have defied the odds just being here. So I have no interest in the bookies quoting the odds against me.’

“Beating Wladimir Klitschko in Germany and now coming here, I’m becoming the road warrior. When I go jogging loads of people are coming up to me. They are fascinated about a fight between an American with dynamite power and me with my boxing skills.

‘But of course, the real difference is that I am very good looking and he is not.

“The moment will come on December 1 when we have to trade heavy blows and we will then see who can take the big punches and who can knock the other out.

“But when is all said and done this is a sport, just a fight. I don’t know Deontay yet as a man but I’ll take him for a beer when it’s over, win or lose.”

Portugal coach, Fernando Santos has explained the rationale behind Ronaldo’s absence from the squad stating once again that it was a decision to let the captain remain focus on his club duty till 2019.

Santos said, “The only thing I think about Ronaldo is that he should win the Ballon d’Or.

The coach recalled defenders Jose Fonte and Raphael Guerreiro, along with midfield pair Andre Gomes and Joao Mario.

Everton’s Gomes returns after being cut from the 23-man squad that lost to Uruguay in the last 16 at Russia 2018, having impressed with his recent displays in the Premier League.

Portugal needs either a point or a win against Italy to finish top of Group 3 in Nations League A.

Santos’ side beat the Italians 1-0 at home back in September, before picking up a 3-2 away win against Poland the following month and will be favourites to progress as group winners.

Sports / Ibrahimovic Reveals Why English Premier League Is Overrated by Hotsports: 1:23pm On Nov 07, 2018
Former Manchester United star, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has sparked controversy for saying the “The Premier League is Overrated”.

Having won league titles with Ajax in Netherland, Inter Milan & AC Milan in Italy, Barcelona in Spain, PSG in France the Swedish Legend joined Manchester United in 2016 in order to add the English Premier League to his list of honours.

Ibrahimovic, however, could not witness Premier League glory at Manchester United in his two years’ stint but was part of the 2016/2017 double winning team who conquered the Europa League and the EFL cup.

In his interview with FourFourTwo magazine, Ibrahimovic revealed he had signed for the Red Devils to show everyone his ability in the overrated English Premier League.

“I’d had a long career before I came – different kinds of countries, different kinds of clubs,” he told FourFourTwo “People said, ‘You don’t need to go to England because if you fail in England, people will always say you weren’t good enough’. Everybody was against it. And guess what? That made me motivated. That gave me adrenaline.

“I liked the Premier League. I found it very motivating and very exciting. It gets a lot of attention, although I feel the quality is a little bit overrated – the individual quality, the technical part. But the rhythm is high. Even if you are the best, if you can’t handle the rhythm, the pace, then you will not succeed, because the pace is very high.”

Ibra’s two-year spell at the Old Trafford was marred by a 7-month excruciating knee ligament injury, the LA Galaxy star still netted 28 goals in 46 matches.

Ibrahimovic boasted that the English Premier League was fortunate he was 35 at the time he finally signed for Manchester United. Maybe he would have become one of the league’s best players in history.

“I’m super proud and super happy that I went to United – it was the right club,” he says. “We won, and I did what I did before I got injured. I had an excellent time – great memories. I’m attached to United forever. The supporters are amazing: wherever I went, I saw red shirts, which was fantastic. It’s a very important moment in my career”, said Ibrahimovic

“As I said when I was in England, you’re lucky I didn’t come 10 years ago, because if I did what I did at 35 years old, imagine it if I was 25. Then it would have been a different story. I came there and they said I came in a wheelchair. All the people that talked, in the whole Premier League, I put them in a wheelchair. That’s what I did.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic,37, still holds the record as the only player to have ever played for seven different clubs in the Champions League. The tattoo-crazy Ibrahimovic has won over 30 football titles in his twenty years of footballing career.

Sports / Ronaldo Rape Case: Accuser’s Lawyer Claims More Rape Victims Have Surfaced by Hotsports: 9:41am On Oct 09, 2018
Leslie Stovall, lawyer to Kathryn Mayorga, the lady who accused Portuguese football idol, Cristiano Ronaldo of rape in a Las Vegas Hotel in 2009 has revealed that another lady has come forward with a rape accusation against the troubled Juventus superstar.

“I have had a call from a woman who claims to have had a similar experience,” Stovall said, via the Daily Mail.

Stovall reportedly declined to name the woman but did say he would forward her story to the Las Vegas police, who reopened Mayorga’s case when she came forward with her story last week.

Mayorga claimed in interviews with German publication Der Spiegel that Ronaldo raped her in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009, alleging that he invited her to his penthouse, then forced her into anal sex.

Mayorga went to the Las Vegas police a day later but said she was hesitant to name Ronaldo in the accusation due to fear of his fame and influence. She also said she received discouraging treatment from the police.

Mayorga said the incident left her with significant emotional trauma, claiming to have since had multiple emotional breakdowns. She eventually opted to request a private settlement from Ronaldo, receiving $375,000 in exchange for a non-disclosure agreement.

That agreement has obviously since been broken.

Mayorga told Der Spiegel she is coming forward now for three reasons: a belief that she can find justice with a new lawsuit, emboldening by the #MeToo movement and a hope that public attention from the case could cause other accusers to come forward.

In addition to Mayorga’s claim against Ronaldo and this new claim, there was also a time in 2005 when Ronaldo was arrested and questioned over allegations that he had raped a woman in a London hotel. That case was eventually abandoned by Scotland Yard due to insufficient evidence.

Ronaldo has denied all accusations, and his lawyers have threatened legal action against Der Spiegel for publishing Mayorga’s claims.

Ronaldo is currently cooperating with the Las Vegas police as it investigates Mayorga’s claim, having been interviewed twice by law enforcement in recent months.

The Portuguese national team opted to leave Ronaldo off its squad in the immediate wake of the Der Spiegel story, though the head of the association did voice his support for Ronaldo, as did Juventus, Ronaldo’s current club.

Less firm in their support for Ronaldo are his sponsors, which include Nike and EA Sports.

Nike released a statement two days ago, saying, “We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”

Sports / Revealed! How Pogba Saved Mourinho From Sack by Hotsports: 2:03pm On Oct 08, 2018
Funny how quickly fortunes change and warring parties put aside their differences, close ranks to fight a common enemy. That was exactly the scenario when Manchester United found themselves in turbulent seas, trailing Newcastle United by two quick goals from the boots of Kennedy and Yodhinori Muto at the Old Trafford stadium, of all places on Saturday.

Transfixed at 10th place on the English Premier League table and trailing big boys, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and even Arsenal, a loss to the Magpies would have further stoked the fire of speculations already surrounding manager Jose Mourinho, rumoured to be on the firing range of a possible sack by the club’s top hierarchy.

The prospects of pulling the chestnuts out of the fire, as it were, was not so bright and a quick-thinking Mourinho had no choice but to stoop to conquer.

According to The Sun (UK), the Portuguese tactician who once referred to himself as the “Special One” had swallowed his giant- sized ego, and for the first time, asked for a way out from his players in the dressing room during the interval.

Surprisingly, it was Paul Pogba, a player he has had a strained relationship within the last one year for not sufficiently delivering the goods after his record-breaking move from Juventus of Italy, who dropped the idea that helped the Red Devils to bounce back in dramatic style to win 3-2.

Hotsportstv.com further learnt from the Metro sports (UK) that Mourinho asked his players at halftime what was going wrong and it was Pogba, the player he recently stripped of the captainship, barred from talking to the press following the Frenchman’s criticisms of his tactical approach to games, who told him what to do!

Pogba told him to drop deeper while asking that Marouane Fellaini be brought in to replace Scott McTominay.

Mourinho did not need any further prodding as he accepted to implement Pogba’s ideas. They promptly returned to the pitch and Pogba and Nemanja Matic was now propped in front of the defence and positive things began to happen.

Manchester United would conjure a revival that saw Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez scoring in the space of 20 minutes to ignite wild celebrations at the Theatre of Dreams.

Mourinho would admit later that he indeed consulted with his players on how to turn things around when it looked like all hope was lost.

” During halftime, we opened our hearts and spoke about tactical changes for two minutes.

“Then, we spoke for eight minutes about other things that I thought would let the players be a little bit more free to face the second half and it became 3-2. Amazing,” he said in a post-match conference.

Premier League watchers hope the newfound unity of purpose engendered by these two principal figures can help to relaunch United’s season, provided of course, that the familiar scenario of the coach throwing a tantrum each time results don’t go his way is curbed.

Events / HS Media Group Signs MOU To Produce American TV Game Show In Nigeria by Hotsports: 1:49pm On Oct 06, 2018
In line with its projection to redefine the nation’s entertainment landscape as well as add value to the society, HS Facilities Ltd, a subsidiary of the HS Media Group has sealed a deal with Genesis Studios, foremost Nigerian television production outfit and owners of The Price Is Right franchise for the Nigerian territory. The Show which is expected to debut on Nigerian television before the end of the year will be produced from the Oregun-Lagos based TV Complex.

Aside its entertainment offering, the global reality show currently the longest running game show on American television, is popular for the opportunity it gives to families to win prizes.

At a press briefing held in Lagos to formally announce the partnership and as well sign the Memorandum of Understanding for the show to take off, the two companies jointly expressed their excitement about the benefits the show will bring to families in Nigeria and brand owners who will ride on it to position their products.

The Price Is Right is a multinational franchise show that was hosted by Bob Barker until 2017 and Drew Carey thereafter. It features a wide variety of games and contests with the same basic challenge: Guess the prices of everyday (or not-quite-everyday) retail items. Four contestants, all of whom are seated in one of the wildest audiences in daytime game-show history, are called to the stage to play a preliminary pricing round. That winner joins the host on stage for one of more than 70 different pricing games.

The Chief Executive Officer of HS Group, Taye Oladimeji Ige, said he was happy that at last his Company’s dream of attracting world class quality shows currently produced abroad back to Nigeria is becoming a reality. He described The Price is Right as the first client as far as television production is concerned in the Centre, easily the “newest and biggest television production complex in the west coast of Africa”. adding that the pedigree of Genesis studios and the global acceptability of The Price is Right was the major consideration for the partnership.

He said: “The significance is that our projection, our aspiration and our dream to redefine the entertainment industry and draw global attention to Nigeria are coming to fruition. Our dream is to raise the stake in the area of servicing television production in Nigeria,”

Speaking about the facilities on ground for television and commercial producers in the company, Ige pointed out that HS Group has five studios with varied sizes with the hope of using them to bridge the gap in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

“We have five studios of different sizes and as at today no such facility anywhere in the whole of West Africa. With what we have here, we are bold to say that television production in Nigeria will not be the same again. This is because Nigerian Producers have no reason to take their Productions abroad any longer.

On the Price is Right, the CEO said “It has been on for over four decades. We are glad that it is finally going to start running in Nigeria for the first time. If we weren’t here, we are sure Genesis would have, in all probability been taken it elsewhere, perhaps down South, UK, US or even Asia. We got mentioned to Genesis Studios through a referral when they visited one of our clients for commercial support for the new Programme and they were advised them to get in touch with us,”

On the future of television in Nigeria, Ige pointed out that the sector was in for a boom as it gears up for digitisation. He likened it with the boom that came with the telecom industry following the arrival of GSM in 2001 adding that digital migration will soon open up the entertainment industry and that HS Media Group was well positioned to key into it.

Corroborating the CEO’s position, the Group’s Chief Operating officer and Executive Director, Productions, Robert Paltiel said the fact that a show of such a magnitude being produced by a Nigerian production outfit is a watershed in the nation’s entertainment industry. According to him, HS Group partnership with Genesis Studio will come with a lot of opportunities for families and brand custodians.

He said: “The show has a lot of window for engagements with decision makers in various segments, especially the children and mothers, who influence purchasing decisions. To this end, products that appeal to children and women have gotten the best platform to showcase what they offer,”

Speaking about the significance of the show to the Nigeria public, the Project Director, ‘the Price is Right’ Nigeria, Abraham Praise, said with ‘the Price is Right’ he sees excitement, joy and more bonding as families would come together, have fun and win prizes.

“The show has many benefits to offer families and brand promoters as it will reward Nigerians with fabulous prizes and give brand custodians platform to showcase their products. Of course, there are prizes that cut across; from small ones to the big ones like cars and trips for people to go abroad on all-expenses-paid holidays. Of all, however, the big thing I see is the excitement the Show will bring to families. One thing I cherish in Nigeria is the fact that the country can still boast of organized family setting both at the villages and in the cities. This is a show that will further deepen relationship and boost family ties. With this show therefore, the institution of marriage will be strengthened because everybody knows prices and people will guess and win prizes. Children will know, father and mother will know, grandparents will know. At the end, it will be an absolute joy and a celebration time for all,”

Asked about the feedback the producers have gotten so far from other markets, he disclosed that the feedback has been great in all the markets the show has run over the years because of the inherent benefits it offers. Praise indexed Nigerians’ interest in the new offering by daily pop-ups on social media currently abuzz with inquiries by Nigerians on how they could get on the show. He added that apart from the entertainment, they are also excited by the freebies when they come for a show with little or nothing and goes home with fabulous prizes.

While speaking on why Genesis Studio settled for HS Group and the importance of the show to both companies, Olatubosun David Olaegbe, Managing Director/Executive Producer, Genesis Studio said the two organizations share the same dream and have the technical know-how and facilities to power the show in Nigeria.

“The good thing about a show like this is that to us at Genesis Studio, we are not just out to entertain people but to add value and impact the society, something HS Media Group also cherishes. In this show, you are not just out to be entertained but every week, you get value for being part of the show because of the prizes that are up for grabs. Another good thing about the show is that audiences at home have opportunities to take part,” he said.

For Brand owners and custodians, The Price is Right is the right platform to tell their stories. “We shouldn’t forget that advertisers are always looking for platforms for brand integration, broad placement in-between shows and there is no show in the world that gives such value as ‘the Price is Right’, he stated.

Sports / 14th Cargolux Squash Tourney Ends, AS New Faces Emerge Winners by Hotsports: 5:17pm On Sep 03, 2018
Since 2004 when it became a regular fixture in Nigeria’s sports calendar, the Cargolux Merchant Express Squash Tournament has grown so much to the point that it attracts participation from contestants from all walks of life.

If previous episodes of the tourney have pulled some weight in terms of attendance and participation, the 14th edition was even more phenomenal as the Lagos Country Club played host to one of Nigeria’s biggest squash championship’s in the past week.

Open to participants in different categories, including the age-grade, the competition won new converts, as well as new faces from across the country setting new standards with eye-catching prizes to boot.

This year’s edition which ended at the Squash Section of the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, over the weekend saw players display skills, dexterity endurance and unmatched sportsmanship as they challenged for honours in seven categories– the Super Veterans( Closed), Veterans(Closed), Veterans( Inter clubs), Men’s Closed), Men’s (Inter club), the U-19 Boys, and U-19 Girls .

The finals were a culmination of a gradual build-up as hostilities in the tourney reached a crescendo in the knock out rounds. The closed competition which is open only to members of the host club had set the tone for the week long tournament with club veterans jostling for prizes.

The event’s tempo would go up several notches as the stage was cleared for the Open tournament to begin. Invited states, as well as the big squash compliant clubs from all over Nigeria, The age-grade teams, particularly the U-19 Boys and Girls were also not left out.

In the finals on Saturday, the duo of Rofiat Abdulazeez and Faidat Soliu, both from Kwara State had stoked the embers of excitement as they took to the courts in a feisty battle to determine who had the bragging rights to the best female squash player in the U-19 category for 2018 as they thrilled an expectant audience of squash enthusiasts.

At the end, Abdulazeez would beat her opponent, Soliu to take home the top prize.
Next was the enthralling match-up of Michael John and Adegoke Onaopemipo which kept the capacity crowd on the edge of their seats.

In what would rate as the most exciting, suspense-laden match of the tournament, both U-19 players from Lagos made a statement of courage, competitiveness, endurance, skill and sportsmanship as an appreciative audience lapped it all up.

The drama of a former champion, Onaopemipo willingly ceding the title to a dogged John, who though injured, did not want to give up, will go down as one of the intriguing highlights of the 14th edition of the Cargolux Merchant Express Tournament in Lagos.

The ovation of the youthful display followed through to the next games in the Veterans and Men’s categories, the duo of Sahid Khan (UNILAG) and Niyi Olumide, also of UNILAG won in classic styles, defeating Mike Nwabuzor (Ikoyi Club) and Dele Rafiu (Benin Club) respectively.

Olumide who resides in the United States was the cynosure of all eyes as he played what the fans would refer to as “a more refined squash”

Olumide would eventually be crowned the new Men’s champion, carting home a cache of sumptuous prizes which include a deep freezer, cash awards, a trophy and a medal around his neck.

Prizes were also awarded to winners who emerged in the closed tournament as well as third-placed finishers in all the categories. Present to add colour to the event were the President of the Nigeria Squash Federation, Boye Oyerinde, the tournament’s sponsor, Captain Oluwashina Akinfenwa, MD, Cargolux Merchant Express Nigeria, President, Lagos Country Club Tajudeen Akande, chairman of the Section Arc. Funmi Bamkole, and a host of other dignitaries.

Commenting on the championship, Nigeria’s Squash Federation, President, Oyerinde said,
To say I’m impressed by what I have seen in this competition today is stating the obvious. It is an indication that the game of squash is not only an interesting sport, but it is the fact that it has gained widespread acceptance across a broad spectrum of society.

I have also been staggered by the level of organisation, the level of competitiveness at this particular edition of the Cargolux Merchant Express Tournament. I want to say to the sponsors well-done and keep it up, ” he added.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe the man believed to be behind a £2bn bid to take over Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea is not denying the rumours admitted he is really a Manchester United fan.

Ratcliffe is Britain’s richest man with a personal fortune of £21bn doubling Abramovich’s, has refused to deny speculation he is attempting to strike a deal with the embattled Russian billionaire to sell his club.

Ratcliffe’s chemical company Ineos is said to be trying to complete a takeover at Stamford Bridge – even though the club insist Abramovich is not looking to walk away.

But despite being a Chelsea season ticket holder, the 65-year-old admits he is actually a United supporter.

Ratcliffe, who was raised in a Manchester council house, said: “I am a season ticket holder at Chelsea, have been for years, although I’m a Manchester United fan really.

Asked to comment on the bid reports Ratcliffe said: “There are always things going on at Ineos but I can’t really comment.”

But he then went on to claim he thought Chelsea’s Russian supremo Abramovich was “on his way out” of the club – although the Blues have always insisted the oligarch was committed to Stamford Bridge.

The tycoon’s refusal to quash the rumours and readiness to discuss topics surrounding Chelsea and football, in general, will only fuel speculation he wants to push through a deal.

And the billionaire owner and chairman of chemicals company Ineos has declined to rule out his interest in seizing control of the club where he holds a season-ticket

Sports / Victor Moses Opens Up On Chelsea Players’ Worst Kept Secrets by Hotsports: 4:17pm On Aug 30, 2018
Chelsea and retired Super Eagles star, Victor Moses has revealed secrets about the quietest and noisiest players in Chelsea’s dressing room and training ground.

The Chelsea forward, in the club’s second player feature stories in the 2018/2019 season answered some interesting questions on the habits of his teammates at the club and his long-term ambition after he must have retired from football.

It didn’t come as a surprise to many football lovers when the 27-year-old winger chose the World Cup winning French midfield maestro, N’Golo Kante as the gentlest player in Chelsea.

When asked about the quietest player at the club, Moses said,

“N’Golo Kante. He doesn’t say anything unless you speak to him. He saves his energy for the pitch so we are happy with him”.

It might also come as a surprise to many football fans that the otherwise reserved German defender, Antonio Rudiger was chosen as the club’s noisemaker. “Rudiger is Pretty loud. David Luiz is very funny. I would say those two are the biggest jokers in Chelsea, “said Moses.

Moses made a shocking decision earlier in August as he announced his retirement from the Nigerian national team barely two months after the country’s participation at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

In his reasons for a rather early international retirement, the Kaduna born forward said;

“I feel now is the right time to step away in order to be able to focus fully on club career and my young family as well as to allow the next generation of Super Eagles stars the opportunity to step up and flourish”.

When asked about his ambitions beyond his footballing career, “I want to get into business, maybe a property business or something along those lines,” he said.

Moses was a prominent figure in Chelsea’s 3-4-3 formation under former coach Antonio Conte, as he is known to play in the right wing-back position. The Nigerian first-team chance came under scrutiny under the tutelage of Chelsea’s new coach, Maurizio Sarri, who will rather play him as forward than in defence, thereby limiting his playing time at the London club.

Victor Moses’ has only played nine minutes in Chelsea first three Premier League games this season. He came on as a sub in the 81st minutes in Chelsea’s first 2018/2019 league win against Huddersfield and didn’t feature against Arsenal and Newcastle United.

Upon retirement, the Super Eagles star has featured 38 times and scored 12 goals since his national team debut in February 2012. He was also a member of the squad who won the African Cup of Nations in 2013.

Sports / Ronaldo Wins UEFA Goal Of The Season Award by Hotsports: 5:16pm On Aug 28, 2018
Cristiano Ronaldo’s overhead kick against his present club, Juventus in the quarterfinal of last season, has been voted as the best goal of the UEFA Champions League.

Ronaldo’s goal beat of the competition from Olympique Marseilles forward, Dimitri Payet’s goal against Leipzig in the Europa League and Eva Navarro’s strike for in Spain’s 2-0 victory against Germany in the UEFA European Women U-17 game.

Ronaldo’s strike, which was applauded on the night by his opposing – and it turned out future – fans, topped the poll with nearly 200,000 of the total 346,915 votes.
