The police on Wednesday paraded 36 suspects, including a female, in connection with various crimes in different locations in the country.

The suspects were arrested for allegedly committing crimes ranging from armed robbery, homicide and kidnapping to rape, car theft and unlawful possession of arms among others.

Among those paraded was Christopher Akpan, 54, the alleged killer of a 45-year-old National Security and Civil Defence Corps officer, identified as Josephine Cynthia.

Mba said, “Akpan had promised to marry Josephine. In the course of the relationship, a lot of financial dealings took place and it is believed Josephine handed a large chunk of money to Akpan

“Between December 19 and 20, 2019, she visited her lover who lured her to the house of a native doctor, Rafiu Afolabi, 67, in Benue, where she was murdered and her body buried in a shallow grave in the forest.

“Akpan promised to pay Afolabi N5m out of the N14m he had collected from Josephine. It took intense effort and massive follow-up by the Intelligence Response Squad before the crime was uncovered.”

However, Akpan denied killing Josephine, saying that he had planned to marry her between December 28 and 29.

He added that she came to visit her to see assess preparation on December 17 and left safely on December 19.

Also paraded was Prince Ruben, 27, who was accused of kidnapping, raping, robbing, killing and mutilating the body of one Joy Saturday, a mother of four.

Reuben confirmed his involvement in the crime.

Five persons were, on Wednesday, burnt to death, while two others sustained varying degrees of injury following a petroleum product tanker explosion in the Ajilete area of the Owode-Idiroko Road, Ogun State.

Our correspondent gathered that the accident occurred when the diesel-laden tanker was descending the sloppy road and its tank suddenly detached from the lorry head, fell off and went up in flames.

An eyewitness said the truck was conveying 33,000 litres of diesel when the fatal crash occurred

PUNCH Metro learnt that the resulting explosion killed five residents of the area on the spot and left two others injured.

The Unit Commander, Idiroko Unit, Federal Road Safety Corps, Akinwunmi Olaluwoye, confirmed the accident.

Olaluwoye said contrary to the rumour that seven persons died, only five deaths were recorded.

He explained that the accident occurred around 8.15am, adding that the victims were burnt to death.

He said a bus and a motorcycle were also consumed by the inferno.

The unit commander added that the victims’ corpses had been recovered by their family members.

Olaluwoye said, “No vehicle rammed into the tanker. The tank detached from the lorry head and exploded. The number of persons involved is seven, out of which five died, while two were injured.

“The driver had driven away the head of the truck as of the time we got there. But we have allowed the police to take charge and handle that aspect.”

Abdulrasheed Bawa, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), says the commission has recovered $20million worth of cryptocurrency from cybercriminals.

He said the commission sees cryptocurrency as an “avenue where criminals launder proceeds of crime”.

He said this on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, on Tuesday.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had issued a directive that banks should close accounts of persons or entities involved in cryptocurrency transactions within their systems.

“As it is today, there is nowhere in the world where cryptocurrency is being regulated. The EFCC is looking at cryptocurrency as an avenue where people are laundering their proceeds of crime,” he said.

“Where people are receiving proceeds of crime and that is our worry. We have seen again and again how cybercriminals are using it as an avenue to get their proceeds of crime.

“Before, it used to be through money transfer agencies like Money Gram and Western Union. Now they have gone E.

“They will defraud somebody and get gift cards, and exchange in dark webs, and use the proceeds to buy crypto. And then of course get it into their e-wallets and they can sell and get their money.”

[b]“As it is now today, we have about $20 million worth of cryptocurrency because we also created our own crypto wallet to recover cryptocurrency. We are now recovering the proceeds of crime.[/b]

“We are in support of what the CBN has done because it has reduced the ease for which these criminals can get cryptocurrency and get naira for it.

“I believe we will not be left behind when it comes to ensuring that laws and regulations are put in place to checkmate the excesses of cryptocurrency.”

Bawa said within January to June 3, 2021, 1,436 suspected cybercriminals have been arrested across the country.

“From January to June, according to the statistics, the EFCC has arrested 1436 suspected cybercriminals across the federation,” he said .
