AKWA IBOM State would lease out land to farmers to assist them expand their agribusinesses, it was learnt on Tuesday. Commissioner for Agriculture Dr Glory Edet stated this when she opened a training for farmers on smart farming, precision and sustainable agriculture. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training was organised by the ministry, in collaboration with Agribusiness Enterprise Development Programme (AEDP). Edet said the vision of the Governor Udom Emmanuel-led administration was to eliminate hunger through improved agriculture that would drive income growth. She said: “Farmers’ training essentially contributes to human resource development in agriculture and addresses their basic needs. Read Also: ‘Akwa Ibom is all we have, let us protect it’ “The government’s policy thrust is on growing the agricultural sector through various commodity value chains to generate employment. Hence the focus on development of agricultural value chain through capacity building. “AEDP is to ensure adequate training of farmers for increased productivity as well as the establishment of Staple Crop Processing Zones (SCPZs) in the state.” According to her, the training will enable farmers and agribusiness owners develop ideas and gather relevant information about agribusiness to determine the real market demands for their produce. AEDP’s Programme Director Ekanikpong Ben said the agency was providing capacity building in agriculture through business and technical trainings. According to him, the agency had also introduced farmers to various technologies and innovations in agriculture to meet the increase in demand for food. https://www.google.com/amp/s/thenationonlineng.net/akwa-ibom-farmers-to-get-govt-land/amp/ Mynd44... EXCLUSIVE: FG, QIPP begin negotiations on ‘take or pay’ power deal EXCLUSIVE: FG, QIPP begin negotiations on ‘take or pay’ power deal November 03 14:54 2020 by Taiwo Adebulu 0 Comments FacebookTwitterTelegramCopy LinkWhatsAppMore5 After initial delays, the federal government and promoters of the Qua Iboe Power Plant (QIPP), a private generating company, have commenced negotiations over a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the 540MW project in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom state, TheCable understands. Advertisement The agreement, if signed, will see the government commit to about $30 million monthly take-or-pay obligation when the power plant comes on stream in 2025. In 2017, the federal government had approved the PPA negotiated by the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) with the new investors in QIPP, led by the Black Rhino. NBET — the body that buys power from the generating companies (GenCos) through PPAs and sells to the distribution companies (DisCos) through vesting contracts — later objected to the QIPP purchase agreement citing the risks. Following NBET’s reluctance to bear the financial risks associated with the operations of the plant, QIPP wrote to Ibrahim Gambari, chief of staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, asking for his intervention. QIPP said it could not bear the financial risk alone and that only a pull/call option agreement (PCOA) can make the project bankable and investors get returns on their investment. The PCOA defines the obligations of each party in case of a default and this is often needed for the project sponsors to approach funders. QIPP promoters said the contract must present sufficient protections to justify investing about $1 billion in Nigeria, with the PPA ensuring both parties are obligated to undertake their responsibilities to make the contract work. Gambari, in his response, asked Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, to propose “remedial action” and provide an “indicative timeline” to close the deal. Nigeria’s current deal with Azura-Edo Power obligates the country to pay at least $30 million a month whether or not the country takes the power generated by the plant. Azura is the only private GenCo given a sovereign guarantee by the federal government following the World Bank partial risk guarantee (PRG) signed by Nigeria in August 2015. But the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has limited capacity to take the power generated by the GenCos, forcing the company to give priority to Azura while other plants are asked to reduce their production. Meanwhile, the energy generated by QIPP is expected to be transmitted to the national grid through the Ikot-Abasi- Ikot Ekpene transmission line, which is still under construction by NDPHC and also facing huge challenges over the right of way. The gas-fired power project, slated to begin commercial operations in 2025, is estimated to cost about $1.1 billion, with a proposed 58-kilometre transmission line that will link the plant to the national grid. QIPP has entered into a 20-year gas supply agreement with Exxon Mobil to get 400 million standard cubic feet per day of gas through its deep offshore facility. Also, the project will benefit from a World Bank PRG covering $150 million loans, TheCable learnt. Under the presidential power initiative (PPI), the Buhari administration is projecting to increase the “delivered ” generation capacity from the current 5,000MW to 7,000MW in 2021, 11,000MW in 2023 and 25,000MW in 2025. https://www.thecable.ng/exclusive-fg-qipp-begin-negotiations-on-take-or-pay-power-deal Lalasticlala.. Udom Emmanuel reinstates 403 sacked government workers in Akwa Ibom.. The Akwa Ibom state governor is paving the way for his colleagues in terms of job creation - 403 sacked workers in the south-south state have been reinstated due to the governor's benevolence Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state has reinstated 403 workers earlier sacked following a government investigation into an illegal recruitment scandal which rocked the State Local Government Service Commission in 2019. This was made known to journalists by the chairman, Akwa Ibom State Local Government Service Commission, Honourable Monday Eyo on Sunday, November 1. According to Eyo, the reinstatement forms part of efforts by the Akwa Ibom government to tackle unemployment among youths in the state. He further disclosed that the 403 workers who are mostly health workers, will increase the manpower in the state's health sector and fill vacancies left behind via retirements. His words: “Their appointment letters have been signed thus beginning from the first week of November about 200 of them will be commencing work. Then by January 2021, another batch of 203 will start work. “The third batch of remaining 320 workers will be subsequently reabsorbed afterward and that will complete the total number of 723 that their appointments were suspended.” In a recent statewide broadcast recently, Governor Emmanuel had announced that his administration will continue to roll out job opportunities as well as training programmes for youths in the area of entrepreneurship in order to engage them productively. Reacting to the government's action, Mr. Darlington Udobong, the secretary-general of Akwa Ibom Liberation Movement, AILM, thanked the governor for rolling out several job opportunities for youths in addition to those already provided via key industrial concerns thriving in the state. Part of a statement by the group read: “We commend Governor Emmanuel for his focused and result-oriented leadership of the state. We are particularly encouraged by his recent announcement of creating more job opportunities aimed at giving youths where to eke out a living. “At AILM, we pledge to support these laudable initiatives and contribute our quota through advocacy to ensure they all succeed.” Meanwhile, in Enugu, the Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi-led government has launched a new initiative designed to empower the youths in the state with skills to secure their future. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.legit.ng/amp/1380057-gov-emmanuel-reinstates-403-sacked-workers-announces-job-opportunities-youths.html Mynd44...
