True story… I know a guy who was on uni holidays in December 2009. He had a bit of money in his bank account. A few grand perhaps. He was always frugal. Didn't like throwing stuff away. He had a phone call from a friend who was $2,000 short on some bills that's overdue and asked for a loan. Here's a possible conversation... "Hey, I can't pay you back but I've got 15,000 bitcoins. Want to swap!" "What the hell is Bitcoin?" he asked. "How much is it worth?" "Well it doesn't actually have a point of value as yet, but trust me, you'll make your $2,000 back in a few years." "Whatever!" he finally said, giving his mate the money in exchange for a piece of paper with some nonsensical codes on it. "Don't lose it!" his mate said and with that, he was gone. The guy just puts the piece of paper in a safe. Forgot about it for years. The keys to 15,000 bitcoin just sitting idle, collecting dust. Until 2013, when he realised the sheer luck of a random transaction has made him a millionaire. But he didn't sell. Won't do. He was patient. He got a decent job. And his hobbies kept him busy. A few weeks ago we were chatting... Hi Jim, Over the last 10 years I’ve became accustomed to this industry and I used that ‘luck’ to help others… Let's chat some time. Cheers and love the Whitlams reference ![]() Just a regular dude who's sitting on tens of thousands of Bitcoins. No doubt Australians will be hearing about him soon. He will be the first Australian bitcoin billionaire, with barely a digital footprint. Which is how he wants to be - like Bitcoin itself - pseudonymous. Watching. Waiting. Contemplating us mortals from a different planet. Planning to make his dent in the universe. I feel sad for the guy who sold him the bitcoin for $2,000, since it is currently valued at AUD$150,000,000. Copied |
