Civil servants in Osun State may be set for a showdown with the state government over the non-payment of their salaries for about five months. The President of the state chapter of the Trade Union Congress, Mr. Olatunji Akinyemi, disclosed to our correspondent in a telephone interview that it was a breach of agreement for the government to have withheld their salaries for five months. He added that the situation had made life unbearable for the workers and could enhance their decision to embark on a full-blown strike. He said, “We have been discussing with the state government and they told us the reason is due to the shortage of allocation from the Federal Government. But even from that small that is coming in, they should pay us. The government should honour its agreement with us, no matter what. “I’m in Lagos now for a meeting with the national body of TUC and I couldn’t come with my car because of money as a Senior Officer in the management. It made me get to the meeting late because I had to come by public transport. “There are workers that cannot pay their house rents right now; some are in the hospital but couldn’t pay their medical bills as we speak. The agony is much. “The issue of strike will be the last resort to the issue. As we speak, there is a slowdown strike. We have written a letter to the governor and he didn’t acknowledge it. The national body of the TUC has taken the matter up and if there are no better alternatives going forward from now, we may embark on a full-blown strike.” Meanwhile, Governor Rauf Aregbesola has assured the workers that they should be hopeful as they would be paid soon. The Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy to the governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, told our correspondent that plans were underway to pay the workers their salary arrears. He said, “Everyone knows that what’s happening is as a result of the financial crisis we’re in due to the global fall in oil price. Even the workers know this. There’s none of them that cannot attest to the fact that Governor Aregbesola doesn’t want to see workers suffer. “We were always paying on the 26th monthly before the dwindling allocation from the Federal Government started. That’s what led to this point where we are. They are our priority and the governor has even dipped his hand into the strategic reserves to pay before. http://www.punchng.com/news/osun-workers-hint-of-strike-over-unpaid-salaries/ |
