The evidence shows that being lonely is bad for your physical and mental health. But, with support from groups and specialists – and even the internet – you needn’t tackle it on your own Recognise the impact of loneliness According to the Campaign to End Loneliness, a commission originally set up by MP Jo Cox in 2016, loneliness can be as damaging as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It is also associated with increased risk of heart disease, stroke and blood pressure, as well as dementia – one study cited by the campaign found that lonely people “have a 64% increased chance of developing clinical dementia”. Having healthy social networks, on the other hand, can decrease risk of mortality and of developing diseases, as well as helping people recover when they are ill – and with 9 million adults describing themselves as “often or always lonely”, it is clear that loneliness has become such a pressing public health concern. Recognising the impact loneliness could have on you is the first step to tackling it. Work out exactly why you are lonely The mental health charity Mind cites two main factors that can cause loneliness: someone either not having enough basic social contact or, despite being surrounded by people, not feeling understood, listened to or cared for. It suggests working out which profile fits you best – it could give you a better idea of how to work through your feelings of loneliness. Speak to someone Talking to friends and family is an obvious and easy path to tackling loneliness, but if you feel you are lacking, joining a club or socialising through hobbies or interests is a good way to meet new people and increase social interactions. The Campaign to End Loneliness suggests voluntary work is particularly good, as it forges connections as well as feeling worthwhile in its own right. Get online Spending time online obviously cannot replace all your real-life interactions, but it can help. The NHS recommends time online to older people experiencing loneliness. This might not be the glorious panacea it immediately seems, however; more than one study has found a link between loneliness and time spent online, so it is important to supplement online chats with actual meetups, too. Increase meaningful social contact It’s all very well joining Twitter or volunteering at your local charity shop, but some research suggests that who you spend your time with matters, too. One study in 2011 found that elderly people who spent time with family were less lonely than those attending social groups with strangers. The perfect excuse to call your mum. Change your thinking Other studies have shown that changing your thinking altogether might be a more foundational way of dealing with loneliness. One 2010 study found that approaches designed to change “maladaptive thinking” – such as negative beliefs or black and white thinking – were, on average, four times more effective than any other kind of approach. Attending CBT might be a good start, the study authors suggest, so perhaps consider speaking with a therapist. Learn to be OK in your own company Too much solitude would make anyone lonely. But learning to enjoy time on your own can be just as important as a good social life. Filling your time with hobbies that interest you – and, importantly, appreciating the pleasure that these things give you – can go some way to combating loneliness. Watching a film or dining alone may not sound particularly thrilling, but with one 2015 study finding that people consistently underestimate how much they enjoy their own company, you might have more fun than you expect. Diabetes as we all know is a disease that affects both adults and young ones and it occurs when the body is unable to break down glucose into energy. This is because it is either not enough of the hormone insulin produced by the pancreas gland to break down the glucose, or the insulin produced does not function properly. Although Diabetes is a non-communicable disease(ie it cannot be spree like other diseases such as malaria, HIV etc) but can also be hereditary and can result to other medical complications if not well-managed. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics as at 2017, it shows that about 8.8 percent o the world’s population had diabetes. That is to say that over 450 million of the world’s population were diagnosed with the disease and unfortunately, the figure has been projected to rise to 9.9 percent by 2045, thereby making diabetes the most rapid growing non-communicable diseases in the world. Diabetes if not well controlled can lead to kidney failure. It also increases the potential risks of heart attack and stroke which haven’t gotten a cure yet. So for those already diagnosed with the diabetes, it can be treated with insulin, changes in diet and regular exercise. However, to know if you are suffering from diabetes, lets examine this few question; *Do you feel tired, hungry and thirsty all the time? *Do you experience blurred vision? When having an argument, there is a need for you to avoid using certain phrases as they can screw things up much more than solving them. When you argue, you are at your most animal. Your brain literally enters fight-or-flight mode, your heart-rate escalates, and logic and reasoning physically shut down. That perhaps informs the reason why a lot of people regret the things they said earlier. We are all guilty of the same stupidity, and sometimes the key to a painless argument lies in the things we don’t say. For starters, here are five research-backed phrases proven to make any bad argument worse. Don’t mention getting calm The biggest mistake most people make in an argument is denying the other person’s feelings. Think for a moment if the words “calm down” have ever actually made you calmer. More than likely, they’ve only ever made you feel more annoyed. Telling a person to calm down assigns them a negative emotion (be it anger, anxiety, stubbornness, etc.) while denying their actual feelings. This seeming lack of empathy can be detrimental to reaching a mutual understanding, which is a far more important outcome than “winning” an argument. Instead of telling your companion how to feel, try to understand how they feel in the first place. Don’t Shut Down Their Emotions Always let the other person vent, no matter how long or loud that venting may be. If the emotional level is high, your first task is to take some of the emotion out. Hold back and let them speak their minds. You don’t have to agree with it, but listen. Most times, just talking honestly about a problem is enough to make a person feel better about it. And since you are a participant in the argument, know that every word your companion says is a step toward mutual understanding. Just thread carefully. Never Fake Empathy You could be trying to say, “your emotions are valid,” but the other person will more likely hear, “I get it—so stop talking.” Instead of merely saying you understand someone’s feelings, show them by paraphrasing. The idea is to really listen to what the other side is saying and feed it back to them, by doing that, you’re trying to discover what’s important to them, and secondly, you’re trying to help them hear what they’re saying to find out if what they are saying makes sense. Don’t Tell Someone How To React It may sound to you like you’re acknowledging the other person’s feelings, but by adding a “should” or “shouldn’t” you are condemning and judging them just as much. Instead of judging a feeling, try giving it a concrete name by saying something like, “You sound pretty hurt about [problem]. It doesn’t seem fair.” It identifies a feeling, then adds a new layer of understanding that can lead to a potential solution. When you think of all the difficult tasks you can engage in during your daily routine, brushing your teeth probably never comes up. After all, you’ve been doing it since you were little. However, it’s easier than you think to make tooth brushing mistakes, putting your oral hygiene at risk. Your Bristles Are Too Hard Hard bristles are often too harsh for your teeth and gums, so most dentists don’t recommend them. Instead, choose soft or ultra-soft bristles that can gently get down under the gum line. Hard and medium brushes don’t do that and can actually abrade the gum. Your Toothbrush Head Is Large Your toothbrush should fit your mouth comfortably and it is best to go for smaller ones. Unless you have a large mouth, compact brush heads do a better job of helping you access those hard-to-reach and hard-to-see molars. Failing To Brush Long Enough The Nigerian Dental Association recommends brushing for two minutes, but many people fail at this, without even realizing it. Different studies have timed people brushing their teeth and asked them how long they thought they did it for. Some people thought they’d brushed for a couple of minutes, but it can be less than half a minute, an indication that our perception of how long we’re brushing is not very accurate. Cleaning the ears is one task that a lot of people are confused about, especially since experts advise against making use of cotton buds or Q-tips. You however don’t have to sweat it as we bring to you expert advice and tricks for cleaning out your ears without causing any damage. The right way to clean your ear is to employ a method known as irrigation. Irrigation is a great way to remove any foreign body or wax buildup in the ear. All you need to do is pour clean, lukewarm water into a bowl. Ensure that you use water that’s not too hot or cold, as that can stimulate the auditory nerve—which also controls your balance—and cause dizziness. You can add a few drops of household-strength hydrogen peroxide if you wish. Hold a towel or another bowl under the affected ear to catch the water as it comes out. Using the water in the bowl, fill up a bulb syringe, a medical syringe without the needle, or a plastic bag or bottle with a pinhole in the bottom. With the arm that’s opposite the ear (for example, your left arm if you’re irrigating your right ear), reach around the back of your head, grab your ear, and pull back and slightly upward. Squeeze the bag, bulb, or whatever you’re using so the water squirts into the ear canal with steady pressure. You will know that you are done once the object or glob of wax in your ear comes out. You should however note that you should stop if the irrigation hasn’t worked within about five minutes or if you have pain or dizziness. You can try again in a few hours. By that time the wax, if that’s your problem, should be even softer. After you’re done, put a couple of drops of alcohol in your ear to help dry up excess water. And there you have it. You don’t have to stress yourself with cotton buds and Q-tips while also worrying about damaging your ears. Use the irrigation method and thank us later for it. Before a relationship experiences a nosedive, there are some obvious pointers often overlooked. Here are some clues to know if your serious relationship might be on the brink of failure. 1. No communication No relationship thrives without communication. Communication is in two parts; how often you talk, chat or see each other, and how well you communicate. George Bernard Shaw writes: “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” Communication has been made a lot easier with the advent of technological inventions and no excuse can suffice for lack of communication. It’s through communication that humans express their emotions. It, therefore, follows that a communication gap is an indication of a failing relationship. 2. No talk about future plans At a candlelight dinner with a romantic ambience, amidst all the sweet romantic talks, a discussion about future plans is one way to know if your relationship is making headway. When your partner avoids or frowns at the mention of future plans together, then it’s likely you are both not on the same page.
