Diabetes as we all know is a disease that affects both adults and young ones and it occurs when the body is unable to break down glucose into energy. This is because it is either not enough of the hormone insulin produced by the pancreas gland to break down the glucose, or the insulin produced does not function properly.
Although Diabetes is a non-communicable disease(ie it cannot be spree like other diseases such as malaria, HIV etc) but can also be hereditary and can result to other medical complications if not well-managed.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics as at 2017, it shows that about 8.8 percent o the world’s population had diabetes. That is to say that over 450 million of the world’s population were diagnosed with the disease and unfortunately, the figure has been projected to rise to 9.9 percent by 2045, thereby making diabetes the most rapid growing non-communicable diseases in the world.
Diabetes if not well controlled can lead to kidney failure. It also increases the potential risks of heart attack and stroke which haven’t gotten a cure yet. So for those already diagnosed with the diabetes, it can be treated with insulin, changes in diet and regular exercise.
