ON THE DIRECTIVE TO RESTART SCHOOLS ONLINE - IAUE I have read with keen interest the comments/ reactions of our students to the directive by the Federal Ministry of Education for all tertiary institutions in Nigeria to restart the 2019/2020 academic session through online teaching. Some of the key matters arising are, as follows: 1. Problem of electricity in Nigeria; 2. Poverty in the land where most students do not have smart phones or internet-powered tablets, I-pads, laptops, or computers; 3. Money for regular data subscription; 4. Network fluctuation and non-availability of network at some locations in rural communities; 5. Keyboard awareness/literacy; 6. Online Matriculation of students; 7. Conduct of online Tests and Examinations; 8. Peculiar subjects that naturally require the face-to-face mode of delivery, e.g. Mathematics, Natural and Applied Sciences Practicals, etc. These are genuine obstacles to e-learning in Nigeria. I am also aware of them. I live and work in Nigeria. Mind you, my post last night was just to inform you about the directive I received that all schools should migrate to online mode of delivery. I have no right to disobey my principals to keep my students idle while others are learning. The questions to ask are: a. What do you expect us to do with the directive? b. Do we deal with all the challenges outlined above before we can carry out the directive? c. Do we disobey the order and leave everything until the virus disappears? d. Do I report myself that my students are not able to cope with the online mode of learning, while other students in other universities who face the same situation as our students are learning and getting along? e. Do we say that we are the worst hit of all the Nigerian students in terms of poverty and background of our parents, and therefore should be exempted from the directive to migrate to online mode of delivery? f. Are we prepared to lose one or more academic sessions, pending when the virus leaves? g. Can the university afford to buy her over 14,000 students smart phones or laptops, recharge data for them and send power to all the locations where they live? As we speak, some universities in Nigeria have already migrated and are in session through the online mode. So, my appeal is that we should join others no matter the obstacles. We need suggestions on the fastest, safest and cheapest way to do what others are doing, so as to end the session with them. We cannot afford to lose one academic session. It is a huge setback. Many of our students are computer wizards. This is the time to showcase your talent. I am open to ideas. Here is my personal e-mail address: mekuri01@yahoo.com. Send me suggestions. If you want to be part of the team to develop the cheapest, fastest and safest online model for teaching and learning in the next one week, please feel free to contact me.
