The Young Professionals Program (YPP) is the strategic talent pipeline for the professional career in the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Group. The Program is designed for outstanding young graduates who can significantly help the IDB Group to carry out its mission and attain its objectives.

This Program enables each Young Professional (YP) to receive extensive exposure and experience of the IDB Group’s various activities through job rotations in different departments. Participants will initially spend two weeks Orientation stage in HRMD. Then, 27 months in Foundation stage which will be split into three rotations of 9 months each in IDB Group departments.

Participants will also benefit from a coaching/career counselling arrangement and a wide range of relevant training and developmental opportunities.Upon successful program completion, the participant will gradually climb up the professional grades in the IDB Group.

ELIGIBILITY: Prospective candidates for the YPP must fulfill the following minimum requirements:

Holds a Bachelor degree in development, education, economics, finance, accounting, business administration, engineering, information technology and law or any other specializations relevant to the work of the Bank from highly reputed Universities or international centers of excellence.
Outstanding academic record. The indicators of high grades shall be based on education system of each country or region. The following grades from different education systems shall form a baseline for candidate’s eligibility for the YP program:

GPA 3.5 on the scale of 4 or equivalent for any other system
‘A’ Grade according to regional systems following ABC grading
‘Excellent’ (ممتاز) in Arab, Russian or any other region’s system following such grading system
Bien in French and Francophone systems.
2nd Class Upper Honors in British system
Shall be a citizen of an IDB member country; applicants from Muslim communities of non-member countries may be admitted

Foundation Stage

Two weeks Orientation at HRMD

Integration Stage

YPs shall be confirmed in one of the departments subject to meeting requirements
Assigned a 3 to 6 months graduation project
YPs are expected to be in this stage between 1 year to 2 years before considered for graduation
The integrated YPs shall be exposed to LeadDP (Leadership Development Program)
YPs to be fully integrated with the IDB’s operations and culture

Graduation

HRMD shall ensure that the YP is ready for the professional role
Direct placement on the grade of the position for which he/she was selected
Successful YPs awarded Certificate of Graduation

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

Basic Salary: Internationally competitive tax free salary based on education and experience of the YPs.
COLA: Cost of living allowance as per the management’s decision.
Transportation Allowance: Lump sum monthly payment besides basic salary.
Spouse Allowance: 5% of basic salary if the spouse is not working.

Mobile phones could be cooking the sperm of people who have them in their pockets, according to a new study.

Talking on a phone that’s charging and leaving it close by on a bedside, as well as storing handsets in a trouser pocket, could be reducing the sperm count of men, according to a major new study.

Men who used their phone for more than two hours per day were found to be twice as likely to have low sperm quality, compared to those who used them for less than an hour, according to a new study published in Reproductive BioMedicine. People who talked on the phone while it charged were twice as likely to see problems, according to the Israeli study that tracked 109 men.

The study claimed that the effects on sperm are so strong that for some people it would make conception difficult, and experts have warned men that they should keep their phone away from their trouser pockets if possible.

The researchers have speculated that electromagnetic active and heat energy coming from the phone can “cook” sperm, causing it to die and leading to plunging fertility rates. The study lends support to the idea of a link between a reduction in male fertility rates that has come alongside the surging popularity of mobile phones.

If men want to avoid the effects of mobile phones on their fertility, such as if they are looking to conceive, then they should leave turn off their devices while they charge or keep them from the groin area, the study concludes.

Jide Idris, the Lagos state commissioner of health, has confirmed the death of 25 children as a result of an outbreak of the Febrile Rash Illnesses (FRI) in Otodo-Gbame community in Ikate, Lekki.

At a news conference in Lagos, the commissioner confirmed that there were 34 cases of sick children with FRI and added that the graves of 20 children have been identified by their parents.

“The graves of 20 children who died from the FRI since the day of onset of signs and symptoms in the first case on January 6 were identified by their parents. “Also, 34 cases have been line listed so far with 17 males and 17 females; 17 dead patients have been identified with nine males and eight females, all are within the age range of eight and 72 months,” Idris said.

“The source of the infection is still under investigation and until we know the required source, we cannot say for sure, what is causing it.”

The unknown disease disease, which started sometime in January 2016, made the predominantly Egun community panic.

After contracting the ailment, the affected children developed rashes, which was similar to the symptoms of measles, and they died two to three days after.

Idris said that the team of epidemiologists from the state ministry of health are yet to come up with the report on the source of the strange infection, but added that the signs and symptoms of the illness suggested Febrile Rash.

“Blood samples and throat swabs from the patients and water samples from the community have been taken to the Virology Reference Laboratory. “This is at Lagos University Teaching Hospital and Lagos State Drug Quality Control Laboratory and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja respectively.”

He, however, urged the citizenry to continue to practice health promotion and disease prevention measures. According to him, such measures should include basic environmental sanitation, including proper disposal of refuse, and avoiding open defecation, as well as regular hand washing with soap and water, maintaining personal hygiene, adequate nutrition, and antenatal care for pregnant women. He listed other measures as “immunisation of children against deadly vaccine and preventable childhood diseases, and regular checkups towards ensuring early diagnosis and prompt treatment of both communicable and non-communicable diseases.

There will be practical mentoring in three Rounds:

Round 1 – Business ideas most needed in the region: During Round 1, you must convince the Regional Mentors that you understand the needs in your region and your idea meets these needs.
Round 2 – Business ideas most likely to succeed in Africa: During Round 2, you must convince the Pan-African Mentors that you know your potential customers’ needs, that you are able to communicate the idea, that you are well aware of your competition, and that you can visualize or explain the idea through a graphic or video.
Round 3 – Business Ideas most significant & sustainable in Africa: During Round 3, you must convince the Global Mentors that you understand the risks you are facing including: leadership gaps, advisor needs, political barriers, customer constraints, and financial risks. During Round 3, you will be coached by the Global Mentors privately via the website on how to improve your Concept Statement, which is a fantastic tool that is reusable in all of your future funding efforts and pitches.
Presidential Round – Presidential Jury: The Final Jury of entrepreneurs, business leaders and academics from Africa, China, and the USA will meet you in person in or by video October to hear your business idea and decide the winners.

The UT Scholarship is meant for those international students who show excellence, both academically as well as socially. The UT masters scholarship is not available for Dutch and/or current UT Bachelor students.

Approximately 30 scholarships are available. There is a limited number of UTS scholarships available every year, and only the most excellent students will be nominated.

Sponsorship duration
This is awarded for one year of study and extended for a second year if study results are sufficient.

In case of a two-year study programme, students can receive an additional UTS of an amount equal to that in the first year to cover the expenses of the second year. However, the scholarship will only be continued during the second when students meet the progress requirements for the UTS.

These progress requirements in order to get a scholarship for the second year are:

The student must have obtained an average grade of 7 (out of 10) at the end of the third quartile of the first year of the programme;
The student must have obtained at least 50% of European Credits at the end of the third quartile of the first year programme;
The student must have obtained 90% of European Credits before start of the second year programme.

Scholarship benefits
The scholarship value varies from €6,000 up to a maximum of €25,000 for one year.

There are two Nigeria Merit Undergraduate Scholarships available for Nigerian students starting their undergraduate degree studies in September 2016.

Each scholarship is worth 50% tuition fee discount per year of study for all undergraduate programmes except Medicine and Dentistry. Students of Medicine and Dentistry will only receive the scholarship for the non-clinical years (Medicine years 1 & 2 and Dentistry year 1). The scholarships will take the form of a fee reduction.

5). Advanced Placement (AP) Merit Undergraduate Scholarships 2016 (50% tuition fee discount)
Sheffield is delighted to announce a new scholarship scheme for undergraduate applicants who are taking Advanced Placements (AP).

Three scholarships are available for AP holders starting their undergraduate studies in September 2016.

Each scholarship is worth 50% tuition fee discount of your undergraduate course tuition fee per year, for up to three years of study. The Advanced Placement scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit.

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must be studying for or have taken Advanced Placements, apply for an undergraduate study place by Friday 15 April 2016 and hold an offer of a study place for entry in September 2016.

Eligible students will automatically be sent details of how to apply from January 2016 onwards. Applicants cannot apply for the scholarship before being offered a study place at Sheffield.

Lagos State Ministry of Health Update on Lassa Fever Outbreak in Lagos State as at January 27the 2016

I.Preamble
Lagos State has recorded twenty (20) suspected cases of Lassa Fever as at January 26, 2016, since the outbreak of the disease in the Country in November, 2015.

Fourteen (14) suspected cases tested negative, four (4) suspected cases were confirmed positive of Lasssa Fever, while the results of two (2) suspected cases are pending. One (1) case was confirmed on the 15th January 2016, two (2) cases were confirmed on 18th January 2016 and one (1) case was confirmed on 26th January, 2016.

The Ministry has line-listed 537 contacts of the confirmed cases and 534 (99%) of the contacts are currently being monitored.

The last confirmed case was a 27 years old Lady, who travelled to Edo State on December 24 2015 and returned to Lagos on January 2, 2016. She became ill on January 14, 2016 and received care in one private hospital and three churches before she was referred on January 23, 2016 to Ijede General Hospital with fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and body weakness. The patient died within a few hours of admission. The case was confirmed as Lassa Fever on January 26, 2016.

The remains of the patient has been kept in the morgue in leak proof body bag. She is to be buried after due consultation with her family.
Ninety (90) persons have been line-listed as contacts of the last confirmed case as at January 26, 2016 and contact tracing is on-going.

II. Information for the General Public
Route of Transmission of Lassa Fever
Members of the public are being sensitized to note that Lassa fever can be contacted through:
1. Ingestion of foods and drinks contaminated by the saliva, urine and faeces of infected rats
Catching and preparing infected rats as food
2. Inhaling tiny particles in the air contaminated with infected rat urine or droppings.
3. Direct contact with a sick person’s blood or body fluids, through mucous membranes, like eyes, nose or mouth.
People at greater risk of Infection with Lassa Fever
Those at highest risk of Lassa Fever include:
4. Families and friends of an infected person in the course of feeding, holding and caring for them.
5. Health workers who have attended to infected persons.

Manifestations of Lassa Fever
Residents are urged to watch out for following signs and symptoms of Lassa fever which typically occur within 1-3 weeks after the patient comes into contact with the virus.
1. Early symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, chills, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, backache, and joint pains.
2. Late symptoms include bleeding from the eyes, ears and nose, bleeding from the mouth and rectum, eye swelling, swelling of the genitals and rashes all over the body that often contain blood. It could progress to coma, shock and death.
How to prevent spread of Lassa Fever
Towards prevention of spread of Lassa Fever, residents are enjoined to:
1. Observe a high level of personal and environmental hygiene.
2. Ensure proper environmental sanitation (Using appropriate methods of collection and disposal of waste, avoid open defecation).
3. Wash hands properly before and after cooking of foods.
4. Eliminate rats from dwellings, avoid consumption of rat meat, protect food items from rodents by storing them in plastic containers with covers and cover all foods (including left-overs) and water properly.

III. Information for Health Workers (Public and Private).
Health workers are advised to:
1. Be at alert to ensure early detection Lassa fever and other viral hemorrhagic fever in patients with high fever.
2. Report any suspected case to the Primary Health Department of LGAs or the Ministry of Health.

I need to emphasise that to prevent spread of infection from a patient to a health worker, Doctors, Nurses, Laboratory Scientists, Pharmacists and other health workers in both public and private health facilities must:

1. Observe universal safety precautions when attending to all patients.
· See body fluids of all patients as possible sources of infection. These include blood, secretions, excretions and other body fluids.
· Regular hand washing with soap and water.
· Wear appropriate hand gloves
· Protect the eyes and noses.
· Wear gowns, protective clothing and caps.
· Sterilise all instruments
· Decontaminate linen and laundry.
· Dispose of medical wastes appropriately

2. Wear appropriate PPEs when attending to suspected/confirmed cases.
· Hand gloves
· Goggles
· Face masks
· Overall (gown).
· Apron
· Booths
3. Wash their hands with soap and water regularly.

IV. Information for Mortuary Personnel
All mortuary personnel are enjoined to follow strict Infection Prevention Control measures when handling dead bodies. All mortuary personnel must wear elbow-length gloves, gowns, overall, goggles, face masks, booths when attending to corpses.

V. General Information on how to identify and report Suspected Cases
Cases to be suspected are:

1. Any person with persistent high fever not responding to standard treatment for malaria and typhoid fever.

2. Any person with positive history of contact with an infected person or health worker who had treated either suspected or confirmed cases, who suddenly become ill.

VI. Measures put in place by the Government
The government, towards preventing and controlling the spread of Lassa Fever in the State, has:

1. Established an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at the Ministry of Health (Conference Room) to coordinate response.
2. Rapid response teams have been set up to carry out the following interventions:
· Collect blood samples from suspected cases for investigation.
· Transfer suspected and confirmed cases to separate isolation ward for observation and management.
· Contact identification, listing and monitoring.
· Case management.
· Decontamination
3. Embarked on intensive awareness and sensitization campaigns through meetings with different stakeholders (market women, school teachers, religious leaders etc), radio jingles, media appearances and distribution of IEC materials.
4. Supplied Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to all General Hospitals, infection prevention commodities (PPEs, Lea Proof Body Bags etc) and antiviral drugs.
5. Intensified Disease Surveillance activities for prompt detection of any new case.
6. Mobilised professional from the Lagos State Ministry of Health (LSMH) and its agencies, Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Association of Public Health Physician

VII. Conclusion
In conclusion, I wish to reiterate the need for the citizenry to follow the general health promotion and disease prevention measures.

These measures include:
1. Basic environmental sanitation, including proper disposal of refuse, avoiding open defecation etc.
2. Regular hand washing with soap and water
3. Maintaining personal hygiene.
4. Adequate nutrition

I hereby state again with great emphasis that:

1. All health workers must have high index of suspicion in cases with high fever not responding to treatment, especially those with positive history of contact with infected person and adhere strictly to infection control measures while providing health care to the people

2. Mortuary personnel must wear elbow-length gloves, face mask, gowns and other personal protective equipment while attending to the remains of dead patients.

3. The public should report suspected cases.
