If you’re the kind of person who avoids public bathrooms at all costs, you may feel validated, as well as disturbed, by a new study from researchers at the University of Connecticut and Quinnipiac University. They suspected that hot-air hand dryers in public restrooms might be sucking up bacteria from the air, and dumping them on the newly washed hands of unsuspecting patrons.

To test this theory, scientists exposed petri dishes to bathroom air under different conditions and took them back to the microbiology laboratory to look for bacterial growth. Petri dishes exposed to bathroom air for two minutes with the hand dryers off only grew one colony of bacteria, or none at all. However, petri dishes exposed to hot air from a bathroom hand dryer for 30 seconds grew up to 254 colonies of bacteria (though most had from 18 to 60 colonies of bacteria).

Were the bacteria multiplying inside the hand dryers, or were they being pulled into the hand dryers from the air inside the bathroom? To answer this question, the researchers attached high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters to the dryers, which would eliminate most of the bacteria from the air passing through the dryer. When they exposed petri dishes to air from the hand dryers again, the quantity of bacteria in the dishes had fallen by 75%. As well, the researchers found minimal amounts of bacteria on the nozzles of the hand dryers. They concluded that most of the bacterial splatter from the hand dryers had come from the washroom air.

How did the bacteria get into the air in the first place? Unfortunately, every time a lidless toilet is flushed, it aerosolizes a fine mist of microbes. This fecal cloud may disperse over an area as large as six square meters (65 square feet). Aerosols from flushed toilets may be especially harmful in the hospital setting as a means of spreading Clostridium difficile.

Is there any good news from this study? Well, the vast majority of the microbes that were detected do not cause disease in healthy people, with the exception of Staphylococcus aureus. Some of the bathroom bacteria, such as Acinetobacter, only cause infections in people in the hospital, or in those with weak immune systems. The others that were found are relatively harmless. In addition, air from real-world bathrooms may contain fewer bacteria than the bathrooms in the study. The sampled restrooms were located in a university health sciences building, and at least some of the bacteria came from experiments going on in laboratories within the building.

So what’s a person to do to avoid picking up bacteria in a bathroom? You should still dry your hands, as not drying them after washing them helps bacteria to survive on them. Paper towels are the most hygienic way to dry your hands. For this reason, use of paper towels is already routine in health care settings. You may also wish to avoid jet air dryers, which have also been associated with the spread of germs in bathrooms. And remember that your chances of picking up a serious pathogen in a restroom are small. Direct contact with other people is much more likely as a means of acquiring infection.

I am not in China. I share the info for the benefit of others. It is very feasible, it is all about packaging. Be aware of the openings and deadlines of different Chinese scholarships. Then prepare your papers: transcripts, international passport, certificate, English proficiency test(TOEFL or IELTS), communicate with your referees ahead of time, prepare your personal statement, polish your CV etc.

I am a bit of a regular here... but had to create an alt account for anonymity sake.

Like the title of my thread says, i've been suffering from this situation for years now and it's totally reducing my social life to shambles. ANd you may want to ask what I have done about this. I have done alot. I have been to quite a number of dentists. Some say it's a case of scaling and polishing, a procedure I allow them to carry on with, to no avail.

I have tried various mouth washes, various mixtures, various gums and I am getting fed up. I am having difficulties relating well with people outside because I want to always close my mouth. People are beginning to tag me a snub and proud person.

Please, that's why I have turned to you my e-pals. Do you know any powerful solution that has worked for someone you knew with chronic bad breath before? Are you a dentist on this forum and have an idea of how I can get rid of this social killer for good? Please your contributions will be very much appreciated.

Mouth odour can be very challenging to treat. It has various causes, which you might already be aware of. There can be local causes such as accumulated dirts on teeth, decaying teeth and gums, hairy tongue, food substances(onion, garlic etc) etc. Then we have to rule out possible systemic causes such as reflux of stomach contents, lung cancer, stomach cancer etc.. All these have to be ruled out.
Similarly, we can have halithophobia, a condition of fear of having mouth odour, in this case psychiatric examination might be needed.
I must be frank with you, treating mouth odour is one of the toughest conditions I have treated as a dentist. I have seen patients who have tried most of the therapies highlighted on this thread, they still ended up being frustrated because the underlying cause(s) have not been detected.

I understand the situation you are in. Don't give up on seeking a remedy.

Snoring

Your mouth can get dry if you snore or sleep with it open, and that makes it an even better home to the bacteria that cause "morning breath." You're more likely to snore if you sleep on your back, so it can help to sleep on your side. Food in your teeth also can help bacteria grow -- a good brush and floss before bed can cut down on that.

Gum Disease

If your breath has a metallic smell, you might have bacteria growing under your gum line -- that can lead to inflammation and even infection. Your dentist might call it periodontitis. You're more likely to have it if you smoke or don't brush and floss regularly. Gum disease also can run in families.

Acid Reflux

This condition makes stomach acid flow the wrong way, back into the tube that connects your throat to your stomach (your esophagus). It can give your breath a sour smell and bring up bits of food or liquid into your mouth. The acid also can damage your throat and mouth, and that can make a breeding ground for more smelly bacteria.

Diabetes

If you have this condition, fruity breath can be a sign that your body is using fat for fuel instead of sugar (glucose). That probably means you're running very low on the hormone insulin, and you should call your doctor.

H. Pylori

This is a kind of bacteria linked to stomach cancer and ulcers. It can cause stinky breath, and you may have nausea, heartburn, stomachache, or indigestion, too. Your doctor can test you for it -- many of these symptoms go away when the bacteria is killed with antibiotics.

Respiratory Infections

Colds, coughs, and sinus infections can send mucus filled with bacteria through your nose and mouth. That can affect your breath. It usually goes away once you get over your cold.

Medication

Some medicines cause bad breath because they dry out your mouth. Other drugs -- like nitrates that treat heart conditions, chemotherapy for cancer, and some sleep aids -- release chemicals that can make your breath smell when they break down in your body. This also can happen if you take too many vitamins.

Tonsil Stones

If food gets caught in your tonsils -- small organs in the back of your throat that help fight germs - calcium can collect around it and form tonsil stones. They don't usually cause any trouble. But sometimes they can irritate your throat, and bacteria may grow on them -- that's what makes your breath smell. You might be able to get rid of them with a toothbrush or cotton swab. It helps to brush well -- including your tongue -- and gargle with water after you eat. Talk to your doctor if you get them often.

Dehydration

When your body doesn't have enough water (a condition called dehydration), you may not make enough saliva, which normally cleans bacteria out of your mouth. That can lead to not-so-fresh breath. Conditions that affect the glands that make saliva -- like Sjögren's syndrome and scleroderma -- also can cause dry mouth and bad breath.

Infection

An injury or cut inside your mouth can get infected with bacteria that has an odor. This may happen by accident or if you have gum surgery or your dentist pulls a tooth. You're more likely to have an infection if you don't follow your dentist's instructions or take good care of your teeth or gums. It may go away on its own. If not, it can be treated with antibiotics. It can help to keep the area as clean as possible and rinse a couple of times a day with salt water.

Liver Failure

This can cause a sweet, moldy smell your doctor might call "fetor hepaticus." It can be a sign that your liver isn't working well because of advanced liver disease. You also might have other symptoms, including jaundice -- when your skin and the whites of your eyes have a yellow tint because there's a buildup of a naturally occuring pigment called bilirubin in your system.

Kidney Failure

You may have "fishy" breath if your kidneys can't get rid of waste like they should. It's most common in the last stages of kidney failure, known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD). When it gets to this point, it's usually treated with a machine that helps filter your blood (called dialysis) or a kidney transplant.

Description

The Boustany Foundation invites applications from exceptional applicants for the MBA Harvard Scholarship for the class commencing autumn. It is awarded to students who demonstrate a high level of academic achievement.

Successful scholars are expected to complete a two-month unpaid internship with the Foundation. Projects are varied and relate to the Foundation’s activities or those of its partners.
The Harvard MBA is one of the world’s leading business programmes, taught at one of the world’s most prestigious Universities. The Boustany MBA Harvard Scholarship is granted once every two years for a two year course at Harvard Business School.

Benefits

Financial aid amounts to US$90,000 (US$45,000 per year) towards tuition fees.
Travel and accommodation expenses related to the internship.

Eligibility

Students of any nation (priority will be given to candidates of Lebanese descent).

Candidates must have an excellent academic background and show considerable promise.

Candidates may apply for the Scholarship only after receiving an offer of admission from the Harvard MBA programme.

English Language Proficiency: The MBA Admissions Board discourages any candidate with a TOEFL score lower than 109 on the iBT, an IELTS score lower than 7.5, or a PTE score lower than 75 from applying.
