I'm confused. Since when were men required to shave their armpits? Is this one of those situations whereby Nigerians adopt Western social norms and then overcompensate? Female body hair removal is a Western thing and we now do the same, but even the West does not require men to shave their pits. Most men are waddling about with their pit hair as plentiful as the grass grows. Personally, I consider it a bit weird for a man to shaves his pits, trimming is OK, and a necessity for some men. If I can see hair without you raising your arms, you've got a problem. KB's pits look OK to me.
CelebritiesRe: Bridesmaid:can You Refuse This Big Favour? by Ibsgal(f):
It is always ok to say no when you can't or don't want to do something. While most people would consider being a bridesmaid a big honor, it is not an obligation, and you are at liberty to say no if you wish. I will encourage you to tell her ASAP, so that she can have time to find another maid if need be. I understand that sharing the news might be uncomfortable and she might be hurt, but you want to give her enough time to make the necessary adjustments.

You could also just suck it up, deal with it, and be her bridesmaid. She asked you. Among all her other friends and relatives, she picked you to be there for her on her wedding day. The friendship you share must mean a lot to her, otherwise she probably would not have approached you with the request. And all you have to do is show up, and put on a smile for the camera. However, if your relationship with her is as annoying and hateful as you described in your post, then it is probably best to decline the request. I wouldn't want someone who hates me to be my bridesmaid, you wouldn't want that, and I'm pretty sure she doesn't either.
PoliticsRe: FUEL CRISIS: Buhari's First Test by Ibsgal(f): 6:41pm On May 22, 2015
Xetima:
We cannot be saying that the subsidy payment is a SCAM from one part of our mouth and the same time advocating paying the marketers. Truth is that subsidy is there however, since APC believe there was no subsidy, I am not sure how they will explain to Nigerians that what they said earlier was a lie. We are waiting for Buhari to tell us his direction on this. However, I learnt that Baba has jetted out of Nigeria.
When I say that it was a scam, I didn't mean to imply that it was non-existent. It did happen, and citizens enjoyed it, at least for the most part. But it was a measure that was poorly executed, and most were led to believe that it was going to be a measure without consequences; however, there have been consequences, and the current fuel scarcity is a one of them.
PoliticsRe: FUEL CRISIS: Buhari's First Test by Ibsgal(f): 5:46am On May 22, 2015
Unfortunately, I do not think that a month will solve this problem, there are so many factors involved in fuel scarcity that an impending solution is almost unimaginable. What needs to be done at this moment is that the petroleum marketers need to be compensated. The billions of naira supposedly owed due to the subsidy, AKA the biggest scam of the century, needs to be paid. Marketers are hoarding fuel because they haven't been paid.

RomanceRe: A Must See Of What My Female Colleague Is Watching On Blackberry Today by Ibsgal(f): 12:55am On May 20, 2015
Even though you're too heartless to resist the urge to publicly shame her, you could have at least granted her the courtesy of making her anonymous. Posting the pic with her name so obviously visible on a public forum was unnecessary.
RomanceRe: A Letter To The Nairaland Guys by Ibsgal(f):
Until a man finds himself, he'll ruin every woman he comes across, whether it be with his actions or words

The above quote sums up the issue at hand. Disrespect towards the female gender is nothing new. It's been the bane of our existence, and we spend the entirety of our lives fighting it, pleading to be treated equally and respectfully. And if we talk too much, they'll label us feminists, as though me asking you to treat me with respect is beyond my right. Unfortunately, this issue extends far beyond NL, it is a global dilemma. Society has somehow implanted in the male brain the idea that he is superior and above caution, and we unfortunately help perpetuate this notion. I'm not talking about biblical superiority, that's a completely different issue.

I won't agree that American social media forums do not tolerate disrespect towards women, I think it happens everywhere and in all societies. The difference is that the most popular Western forums are not anonymous, NL has a feature of anonymity. And while most of us enjoy this feature, some abuse it. Imagine placing an irresponsible person in a sticky situation, and expecting him to act responsibly. Sorry to say, but the only thing you'll get is irresponsibility.

FamilyRe: How Do I Make Proposing To Her Romantic And Memorable? by Ibsgal(f):
This might be a bit unconventional, but you asked for suggestions, so here is mine. If your girlfriend is not into the whole "one must make a grand proposal" fad that's trending nowadays, she might actually like this. Propose to her amidst her parents. These are the people that have been the most instrumental in shaping her into the woman that she is today. Gather dad, mom, and daughter together. Tell the parents the purpose of your gathering beforehand. Kneel in front of her, and hold her hands, proceed to tell her the characteristics the she inherited from her father that you like about her the most, do the same for the traits she inherited from mom. Afterwards, go on to mention her God-given qualities - a kind heart, an empathetic personality....yaddi, yaddi, yadda. Then tell her how blessed you feel that all of these people and God have worked so hard to put together such an amazing woman, the woman who will make you the happiest man alive if she could say yes to a question, then ask the question. Don't forget to tell her how happy you'll make her, and that you'll make sure to always protect her. Take her out afterwards, or do something you know you'll both enjoy. Not only will she find the proposal endearing, but you will score MAJOR points with your future MIL and FIL.

Apparently, I spend too much time thinking about these things, and this is the proposal I would love. I'm sure she'll like whatever route you take to propose. Good luck!
PoliticsRe: Oh Dear! Read What These Americans Think About Adams Oshiomhole's Marriage by Ibsgal(f): 10:15pm On May 16, 2015
anonimi:
In short you CANNOT show that Americans could not care less when they married.
The fact that they had a reality show and there were those who considered her a gold digger would suggest that indeed there was PUBLIC interest in their marriage at the time.
QED!!!
Moreover, in case you missed the obvious differences between the two characters, let me point some out to you =>
Oshiomole is the CURRENT governor of a state while Edwards was an ex-convict and former governor when he married Trina after their meeting while he was in prison.
Trina had two teenage kids already. I doubt if Lara is an after-two baby mama/divorcee also or do you think she is huh
In case you do not know, the phrase "could not care less" has multiple definitions and is somewhat ambiguous. My use of it should be interpreted as " knowing about something, but not necessarily being bothered by it". The tales of Edward's and his wife's past indiscretions are irrelevant to this issue. And if it isn't obvious to you, my initial post was not to drive at the differences between the two relationships. It was to point out that there is an obvious bias in the way Oshiomole's wedding is being perceived by the public.

Ca you show us how you concluded that people couldn't care less huh

Meanwhile, I found this about your reference for Oshiomole's new marriage:
The public barely knew about it, and the people who did, found out when his reality show came about. His love life didn't garner attention the way Oshiomole's has. Moreover, when Edwards got married I didn't see any social networking site making mockery of him and his wife, and the fact that people think it's ok to give their unsolicited opinion about this man's choice is inappropriate.

PoliticsBenin Republic Is Nigeria’s 37th State –Yayi by Ibsgal(op):
President Yayi of Benin Republic declared that his country is Nigeria’s 37th state. Yayi, who met Buhari at the Defence House in Abuja pledged to strengthen cultural and bilateral ties between Nigeria and Benin Republic. He also commended the president elect on the tactics used to ensure a peaceful and transparent election, saying that other West African leaders would no doubt need to learn from his good example in democracy. In his words: “Usually, in Africa, it is rare. He gave us a very good example of democracy, not only in our sub-region, not only in Africa , but also in the whole world. I am here to pledge my support and the support of my administration to your administration because of your integrity and respect" He noted that Benin is Nigerians’ second home, as approximately 55% percent of Benin's population has Nigerian heritage.

I have to say that the respect Buhari is commanding is phenomenal, not only in Africa, but on a world-wide scale. The Washington Post recently reported that Obama should attend the inauguration of the president-elect on May 29 (not sure why he needs to be there, but I guess the association wouldn't hurt either parties). To be honest, I was a bit disheartened when Buhari was elected, not because I supported GEJ, but because it was apparent that the situation in the country was so terrible the citizens were willing to elect an individual who is both a former military dictator and a former leader of a military junta. It was an act of desperation, but hopefully this act will prove to be the saving grace that the country needs. Hopefully.
RomanceRe: See How This Guy Punished Lady That Refused To Give Him Her Phone Number by Ibsgal(f): 8:38am On May 15, 2015
Truth be told, the dude was being petty. He didn't pay for the others out of the goodness of his heart, he was being spiteful. If a woman refuses to give you her digits, suck it up and move the eff on. Maybe she's in a committed relationship. Maybe she's not interested. Or maybe she just doesn't want to give you her number. Under no circumstances is anyone obligated to give out their information just because someone else wanted it. That being said, posting that mess on the internet doesn't make the girl any less petty. And unfortunately for her, she got the worst of it, the guy really did punish her in absentia, the internet trolls did it for him - some of those comments to her post are harsh, to say the least.

HealthRe: My Life As A Doctor ...... The Way I See It by Ibsgal(f):
Unfortunately, this is the culture everywhere. It's somewhat ironic that medicine is considered to be one of the most altruistic and empathetic professions, yet physicians can be quite unpleasant. I don't mean to play the devil's advocate, but forgetting a patient's information after you've clerked them is unacceptable. Does it happen? All the time. One of the best way of dealing with this is to say that "the information was not asked", I suppose that might be better than saying that the info was forgotten. The one thing I've learned is that confidence is key, once an attending senses your lack of confidence, you're toast, and it doesn't matter how knowledgeable you are. I wish hospitals place more emphasis on improving attending-resident/intern relationship, it might help alleviate these problems. I read an article a few weeks back regarding how to address this issue, it may be useful to the troubled physicians that come your way.

"As part of an assignment, students are asked to make an unclad “gesture” in front of the class in a darkened room.
Such a gesture can be to disrobe, or to remain fully clothed and say something revealing about yourself that makes you feel vulnerable. The class, which is not required, is popular with students, as is Dominguez, a tenured associate professor" - Los Angeles Times

If the student decided to sign up for a visual art class that's known to encourage unclothedness, then she should deal with it. Besides, no one forced her to disrobe, she could have easily opted for the second option of being fully clothed and sharing something revealing about herself.

CareerNigeria Is Named The Country With The Highest Percentage Of Female Entrepreneurs by Ibsgal(op): 4:20am On May 09, 2015
A study conducted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation reveals that Nigeria has the highest percentage of female business owners in the world. 41% of women in Nigeria are business owners. I'm so proud. Unfortunately, the notion of entrepreneurship is not equal among nations. A woman who owns a roadside kiosk selling food items in Africa and a woman who owns a fashion line in North America are both business owners - but are they comparable?. A lot of women in Nigeria are forced into owing businesses due to unfortunate circumstances. For example, I'll consider my mother an entrepreneur, she opened a small shop because despite years of loyally serving her country as a civil servant, her retirement package remained unpaid for many years. I have a friend who studied biochem, couldn't land a job after graduation, became a tailor apprentice, and is in the process of opening her own seamstress shop. While there are many thriving female business owners in Nigeria, I doubt more than 20% of female entrepreneurs in the country belong to that group. I will say though, if there is a trait I admire about my fellow-countrywomen, it is their unshakeable determination to always pull through even in the direst of circumstances, and this study is an affirmation of that fact.

HealthRe: Help For Sickle Cell Anemia And Stroke- Any Hope? by Ibsgal(f): 6:42pm On Apr 13, 2015
I'm sorry to hear that he isn't feeling too well. SCD is a very difficult situation, but with proper management, he'll be able to lead a relatively normal and happy life.

It all depends on his current clinical presentations. What are his symptoms? If you could describe the symptoms he's experiencing a bit more, that would be great. Many people with SCD presents with different symptoms at different stages of the disease, so clinical manifestations differ among SCD patients. MANAGEMENT AND CLOSE OBSERVATION ARE VERY IMPORTANT, so please make sure that he frequents his pediatrician or hematologist. It is recommended to take 1mg of folic acid a day. Additionally, if he's under 5, you can put him on a daily antibiotic until he is 5 years of age - this is because his immune system is compromised and he is therefore prone to early childhood infections (please talk to his physician about this). Also blood vessel occlusion is very common in SCD, so it might be helpful to put him on an analgesic or NSAIDs (I recommend talking to his physician about this since he/she would be better at making an assessment of his situation).
HealthRe: 10 Months After Giving Birth, She Has Not Seen Her Menses, Pls Advise by Ibsgal(f): 5:18am On Apr 08, 2015
As mentioned by others, you should have no worries, this is very normal. She's going through what is known as lactational amenorrhea, which is a common phenomenon among women who are actively nursing. In fact, nursing increases prolactin which in turn suppresses secretion of FSH and GnRH, hormones that are necessary to stimulate the gonads and menstruation. Should the situation continue after the baby has been weaned, I would recommend seeing an OB/GYN.
