A socio-cultural group in Northern Nigeria, the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has accused Nigeria’s leading politicians of being insensitive to the plight of victims of the insurgency in the north eastern part of the country.

The group said in a statement on Sunday that it was concerned that rather than working together to resolve the Boko Haram insurgency that has claimed over 13,000 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands of people, the politicians were more interested in their 2015 ambitions.

“It’s an irony that while Nigerians in the Northeast region are being killed by insurgents and Nigerian territories being seized,” the ACF said “our politicians are busy collecting party declaration forms to contest 2015 elections instead of collaborating efforts to contain the insurgency.”

An explosion has ripped through a bus station in Gombe, residents and witnesses have told PREMIUM TIMES.

The explosion, our sources said, happened Friday morning at the popular Gombe Line Transport Services Limited.

Details of the incident are still sketchy, but Abdulrahman Suae, a resident of the area, said he saw about five people being evacuated to the Gombe General Hospital.

President Goodluck Jonathan has finally obtained the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s election nomination forms ahead of his formal declaration to seek a second term in office.

Mr. Jonathan picked the forms at the PDP national headquarters in Abuja Thursday after confirming he received at least N100m as contributions from groups and individuals to defray the cost of the form.

The PDP nomination form sells for N22 million.

The Nigeria Police have confirmed the withdrawal of the security details of the House of Representatives’ speaker, Aminu Tambuwal.

A statement by the police spokesperson, Emmanuel Ojukwu, said Mr. Tambuwal was stripped of state protection because he decamped from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The statement reads: “In view of the recent defection by the Right Honourable Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, CFR, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, from the People Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC), and having regard to the clear provision of section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has redeployed its personnel attached to his office

After nearly a year of bitter relations, President Goodluck Jonathan and the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, met Thursday in Abuja and reconciled differences that once drove both men to the extremes of their offices.

Officials at the meeting say the president urged peace, and announced that he had nothing against the emir and that he had forgotten everything that happened. In return, Mr. Sanusi also preached peace saying he too had let go of the past. The president and the emir later met privately for about 15 minutes, according to our sources.

Mr. Sanusi and his entourage left for Kano shortly after, and were on their way to the Abuja airport at the time of this report.
