The Nigerian military responded with anger Thursday after its soldiers were dismissed by the defence authorities of Niger as “cowards”, in a rare public tit-for-tat between the two countries involved in the fight against extremist group, Boko Haram. Niger’s Defence Ministry had in an earlier statement said its soldiers, unlike their Nigerian counterparts, do not run away in the face of battle with Boko Haram militants. “Our soldiers are not like Nigerians. They don’t run,” the statement said. In series of tweets, the Nigerian Defence Spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, branded Nigerien soldiers “looters”, and accused them of providing fighters to Boko Haram. read more........ http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/176751-nigeria-hits-back-niger-accuses-coalition-soldiers-looting-helping-boko-haram.html |

Amid speculations of plots by the Presidency to remove the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Attahiru Jega, from office, it has been established that the president has no powers to do so. According to the 1999 Constitution (amended), the president can only remove the INEC Chairman on the strength of an advice from the Senate. Mr. Jega, a former vice chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, who was appointed in June 2009, completes his five year tenure on June 30 this year. However, there are reports that the presidency is already shopping for a replacement for the embattled INEC chairman over allegations that he has been compromised. see more................ http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/176614-jonathan-cannot-fire-jega.html |

I hope we can avoid it.” There have been concerns among opposition activists and civil society that Mr. Jonathan is excessively courting the armed forces and dragging them into politics. read more.................. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/176613-jonathan-inviting-military-coup-nigeria-obasanjo-says.html |
