Even if both are tangents, they will not necessarily be equal. It is possible for both to be tangents and still not be equal. The methods I used in algebra and calculus made no assumptions and went straight to the point. I cross-checked my workings many times and the length of the chord is (15/7)a units.

Tangent only touch a point in the circle, so no assumption in it

Edit: I have seen your working. The assumption that |GA| = |GF| is wrong. It renders your result invalid.

|GAl and |GF| are tangents to the small circle which intersect at G so the lines are equal,
