Christianity EtcCHURCHES Vs CAPITALIST MOTIVES: The Plights Of The Peasant Christians by ifeben(op): 12:41pm On Aug 16, 2017
Yes! …coming from the Biblical stand point according to the word of God in John 8:31-32, it buttress on the import of WE CHRISTIANS to not just knowing the GOSPEL TRUTH but it is a yardstick for our own SPIRITUAL freedom which will guarantee eternal life.

Honestly speaking from this angle as a critic and someone that love my religion which is CHRISTIANITY, it is so sardonic to say that the Biblical injunctions which our LORD JESUS CHRIST has ask us to follow is no longer practicable in CHURCHES OF TODAY.

A Christian will attend a Church program with the different nomenclatures organized by MEN OF GOD like; prayer vigil, Congress, Retreat, Sunday Service, Morning/Evening mass, Convention and so on as the tags it bears are too numerous to exhaust… going with the sincere MINDSET to commune with HIS MAKER… all with the hope of getting solace there (CHURCH).

It is not surprising that these HOPES are often DASHED by their fellow Christians but do not be surprise that the churches of today has directly turned RELIGIOUS PROGRAMS to a CAPITALIST ENTERPRISE where the POOR ones will be exploited in all ramifications ranging from all sort of utterances by these men of GOD to physical exploitations from them by vendors who hide under the canopy of satisfying the urgent need of these MIRACLE PATIENTS.
SEE ALSO: Restructuring: Questions FG Must Answer on Isoko Marginalisation - IYA

I attended a Church program recently and in the Church environment I noticed that it was a business setting. Transaction of the highest order was taking place not that these things are generally wrong per se but my condemnation is the PRICE TAGS placed on products and services by these Christians ranging from price of foods stuffs, shelter, charging of phones just to mention a few. Emphatically my phone was CHARGED for a #100 which was even higher than the money I used in charging my phone @MAMMY MARKET during my NYSC orientation days, …and here is a religious ground don’t forget!

Meanwhile, I’m aware of the Biblical verse that condemns JUDGING the activities of men of God (Matt.7:1) which I know lots of criticism will come thereafter but mind you if that will be your stand point, I would love you to know that I’m NOT judging MEN OF GOD but drawing their attentions to these anomalies that have bedevilled CHURCHES today. JESUS during HIS missionary works on earth condemned commercial activities in HIS FATHER’S HOUSE. CHRIST gave to the POOR and even to the rich but the reverse is the case today in our CHURCHES. You can take a look at the event in JOHN 2:13-21.

Therefore, I use these medium to call the attention of churches, church LEADERS all over the country, Christians and all those who are involved in this Christendom race to see to these things highlighted and make adequate provisions for their members attending these programs. Put everything in place to minimize the inflation of products and services in the Church Venue and let brotherly love continue in our CHURCHES as admonished by St. Paul.

However, when these sky rocketing commercial activities are not checked and the Church continues to grow under BUSINESS motive instead of preaching TRUE DOCTRINES and WINNING SOULS FOR CHRIST (by constantly BREAKING BREAD TOGETHER in the HOUSEHOLD OF FAITH), I’m afraid that when the trumpet shall sound, many CHURCHES will end up misleading their members.

PoliticsGone As The Wind: How N46bn Delta State Paris Club Debt Refund Was Wasted by ifeben(op): 12:35pm On Aug 16, 2017
Barely a month ago, the media was awash of the huge Financial windfall that several states in Nigeria have encountered.

After more than a decade of waiting, the monies deducted from successive regimes as debt owed to the Paris Club has been refunded and the current state governments headed by individuals who were political neophytes then were now the beneficiaries of the largesse.

In Delta state, this was more than just a windfall to be squandered upon inanities. It was an answer to the prayers of retired Civil servants who were being owed their gratuities and accumulated pensions, Local government employees who were being owed several months arrears of salary, graduates against whom an embargo on employment in the Delta State civil service has been placed, Deltans across various towns and villages who had been denied Democratic dividends with the excuse of EGO ARIA, a word loosely translated from the Governor’s native Ika language meaning ‘No money’ which has become the sing song of the Okowa administration.

Indeed the list of the Delta state government ineptitude is endless and so glaring as even the state capital, once a thriving urban conurbation has become a ghost town and the Nigerian metaphor for flooding and wanton neglect.

It was thus the legitimate expectation of Deltans that the said Paris Club debt refund to Delta State in the sum of N24.5 billion, the June Federal allocation to Delta State of N7 billion plus N5 billion Local Government Council allocations as well as the June Budget Support Fund of N2 Billion and the state monthly IGR of over N7 billion would go a long way to addressing the critical challenges of Deltans highlighted above.

Very surprisingly however, the state government has come out to state that the Paris Club funds has been expended. Just like that? Does the state government think that Deltans are robots who should swallow a blatant lie as the truth? What was this humongous sum of over N45 billion used for? These are some posers for which the state government must be held to account.

In a seeming afterthought, Charles Aniagwu the maverick Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okowa stated about a fortnight ago that “If the government spends virtually all that comes to pay salaries of workers, what happens to the larger chunk of the population?.” It may thus be expedient to retort to the CPS his own question, “WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE LARGER CHUNK OF DELTANS FROM THE PARIS DEBT REFUND”

The glaring truth which the state government frantically seeks to avoid is that the debt refund alongside the statutory receipts of Delta State for the month of June 2017 totaling over N45 billion has been treated as awoof, the local term for a windfall which was looted, squandered and the rest given to settle political aides and other political hallelujah boys. Deltans have once again been financially raped and swindled and the Paris Club debt refund have been frittered away just as the wind.

PoliticsDelta Forgotten Communities: We Are Cut Off From Civilization, Umuochi-utchi Com by ifeben(op): 10:30pm On Aug 08, 2017
Umuochi-Utchi community is a rich agricultural community in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State. But in spite of its rich agricultural endowment it is cut off from the rest of the world as they do not have access road and other basic social amenities enjoyed by citizens of a country.

Our correspondent recently visited the community to see things for himself and what he found was unbelievable. The living condition of these people can best be described as that of a people who used to live in the stone-age era. The government has completely forgotten about this community and they lack all the basic necessities needed to live a good life

They live in mud and thatched houses with little or no protection against the sun and heat, and to make matter worst they live by the shore of River Niger where they are prone to flood all the time. They depend on the river as their only source of drinking water and as a result they usually fall ill all the time.

They do not have a good healthcare centre where they can take their sick children to when they are sick. The women do not go for anti-natal care because there are no hospitals there. Some of them have to travel to Onitsha and Asaba to get good medical care whenever they are pregnant. The only healthcare centre in the village has been abandoned by successive governments.

Umuochi-Utchi Community

The community Head, Chief Richard Nzekwe, (The Okpala-Ukwu) who spoke to our correspondent called on Delta State Government to come to the aid of the community, lamenting that they will soon be washed out of the face of the earth if nothing is done.

Speaking on the lack of access road to the community Chief Nzekwe said, “We have been fighting for this road as far back as 1976 and a road was approved from Asaba Head bridge, which is Oko junction down here. We sent a delegation to Benin, to the then Governor of old Bendel State in 1977 or so.

Umuochi-Utchi Community

“We met with the then military Governor. He received us and we handed our request to him and he said it a good matter. As an Hausa man he collected our letter and he told us to go and that we will hear from him. In two weeks time he approved the road for us. He engaged surveyors who planned out the road and they engaged the services of a road construction company from Israel called Boni Soni. This company had not started work before the government was toppled.

“We met he civilian government during the time of Alhaji Shehu Shagari when Prof. Ambrose Ali was the governor of Bendel State. One commissioner terminated the construction of the road. But Prof. Ambrose Ali called them back and even paid mobilization to them. They carried all their equipment to Oko junction in Asaba. Few days for them to start work, the government announced that there was recession and the company left with their equipment and since then we have never seen anybody again.

Umuochi-Utchi Community

“We have been meeting will successive governments concerning this road but they never did anything. I met Governor James Ibori in 2001 or so and we submitted our letter of petition to him and he told me that he will look into the matter and get back to us. He convened a state council meeting and there he made a statement that he will commission this road before the end of his tenure. But till today we saw nothing”, he continued.

Narrating how he met with their representative at the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon Friday Osanebi, concerning the plight of the community, the community head said, “Since then we have been trying to meet all those who have been representing us. None of them have been listening to us. Last November, I went to meet the man representing us, Friday Osanebi, who is the Deputy Speaker. He told me to come back again and that I should give him a day or two notice. At my age, I deserve respect even though I do not have money.”

Continuing he added, “We need the access road now because the River Niger is building up every day and soon it will cover the entire community. When that happens everywhere will be filled with water and it will make it impossible for our people to move their things away. Our people take a lot of risk during these periods.”

Speaking on the deplorable condition of the only primary school in the community, Chief Nzekwe lamented that those who collected the contract for the rehabilitation of the school abandoned the project half way.

“Look at our only primary school. The contractor has abandoned the building of the school project that was awarded to him. He just came and did small work and left without telling us anything. Our children who go to the school learn in that deplorable condition. There are no teachers in the school. It is only headmaster that comes with one or two teachers that teach the children. How can only three people teach a whole primary school in the Community?

Umuochi-Utchi Community

“We are forced to send our children to other places to go to school at a very tender age. This has made our children to be what they are not supposed to be because they lack parental care where they are because we have to hire houses for them. Most of our children are outside and many of them have joined bad gangs and they never come home with good results to their parents.
SEE ALSO: Governor Okowa gifts Asaba Town 12 New Roads

“The lack of roads is killing our schools. We have children in this community that can feed three primary schools. But they are all around Onitsha, Kwale, Asaba and other places. Any where you have people you send them to help you look at them for us. So how do you expect somebody that has not been able to take care of his children to take care of your children for you?

“Look at the health centre that we have in the community. We built that health centre through communal efforts and we called the council people to engage staff there, but they have refused to do anything. The people they sent to come and manage the health centre do not come to work. They are only there to collect salaries. We do not know whether the council do supply them with drugs or not because our people are paying heavily to get drugs. We have become endangered species.”

On his part, Rev Father Paul Arinze Obi the Parish Priest of Holy Trinity Parish Church in the community who was posted to the area since 2013 also narrated his experience in the village. He said the community is suffering as a result of neglect by successive governments.

Umuochi-Utchi Community

“These people here are peasant farmers and are made up of indigenes and non-indigenes who have come here to farm. But for all their toils, they seem not to be getting anything meaningful from it because there is no road to evacuate their produce. As a missionary here I feel their pains so much.

“For example I have to be crossing River Niger on a daily basis because there are no roads. There is no water to drink and there is no healthcare centre for the people. The education here is almost zero. Young men with good future end up doing farming. Even the farming they engaged in is not profitable because there are no roads. Some of them end up destroying themselves by joining bad gangs which makes them lack morals. When I see these young people suffering I really feel pains inside me.

“I am really moved by their plight and that is why I want the state government to come to their aid so that they can have a sense of belonging in the state. They should feel the dividends of democracy in this modern age. Most of them are still living in thatched houses in this modern age. This is the reality on ground.”
SEE ALSO: Delta First Lady Commissions Sickle Cell Clinic at Eku Hospital

One of the community women, Mrs. Uju Uba who spoke to our correspondent lamented how pregnant women in the community do suffer on daily basis before they give birth to their children. She said that most of them have to travel to far away Onitsha or Asaba to seek medical care, a journey she stressed made some of them to suffer complications.

“Government is not even remembering that there are people in this community. We do not have roads, water, market, schools and light. We do not have teachers in the only primary school in the Community to teach our children. We do not have water to drink. The only water we drink is from the River Niger. Sometimes we drink rain water and sometimes we go to Onitsha to buy water. My children do not live here with us because there is no school that they can attend.

“I want the State Government to help us with so many things in this community. I want the State Government to provide good schools for us because it is not a good thing that our children are not living with us. There are so many things the child would learn from the parents when they are living together,” Mrs Uba lamented.

Another resident of the community, Mr Ifeanyi Chukwuji said that; “We do not have roads and water in this community. Our school is in a deplorable condition. We are farmers here but when we finish harvesting our crops there is no market to sell them. There is no road to transport them to other markets too.

“We want government to come and help us. We want them to provide us with schools, electricity and roads. We do not have a good healthcare centre here. Whenever our people are sick, we have to travel to Onitsha or Asaba to seek medical services.

Umuochi-Utchi Community

“I want to appeal to the State Government to provide us with roads so that we can be able to evacuate our produce. We want them to provide electricity for us too. We want the Government to make our healthcare centre functional because the only one that we have is not functional. The nurses and the doctors do not come to work. They only come to work in the health centre whenever they like. So we want Government to really look into our plight and help us.”

CelebritiesWhat Is Killing The Nigeria Pageant Industry By Dominic Barcity by ifeben(op): 11:46am On Jul 25, 2017
The Pageant Industry in Nigeria has Become an industry to reckon with in as much as it is an industry that does good, it also has its evil sides, let’s not dwell on any of these but look at this vibrant industry as it concerns Nigeria in contrast with the world.

As usual, most Nigerians want to do every business they find their peers doing especially when they think it is succeeding and this ideology has sadly affected the pageant industry.

Pageant competitions are supposed to create employment, enhance the fashion world, bring to live the mannequins that strut the stage and idolize young beauties by giving them platforms to showcase their talents, but in Nigeria it has become a beehive of infidels, non-professionals and mediocrity has become the order of the day! People now associate pageantry with a lot of ills such as prostitution, homosexuality etc.

As the cliché goes, beauty contests are here to stay. They are springing up like mushrooms such that almost every local government now has a crowned beauty queen, like Miss Orlu, Miss Ikorodu, Miss Bwari, Miss Isolo, etc. In addition, we now have crowned beauty queens for specific events and sectors, such as Miss Calabar Festival, Miss Tourism, Miss Campus, etc. No event, festival or carnival seems to be complete without a beauty queen being selected for it. Expectedly, pageant organizers are multiplying in leaps and bounds.

Here are few problems that are killing the Industry here in Nigeria…

1 Lack of Functioning regulatory Body: The Beauty Pageant Industry Ills can be attributed to the fact of lack of no functioning regulatory body regulating the beauty pageant industry in Nigeria and this remains the major factor why beauty pageant and beauty queen keep messing the industry up with several controversy, if the regulatory body is functioning well then the rest problems can be solved.

2 Transparency: This is the major reason why young girls don’t want to contest for any beauty contest anymore, Pageant Organisers lie about and always fail to provide the promised star prize and most of them also cheat in selecting winners.

3 Unprofessional Management by the organizers also remains one major problem killing the industry, most of these organisers don’t understand the pageant business so well, they actually feel it’s more about them staging a contest to get girls for pimping which is now known as the modern day prostitution.

4 Lack of Sponsorship: Most Pageantry with good content fade away easily due to lack of sponsorship, most corporate organisation don’t consider sponsoring beauty contest and this remains one of the major reason why beauty pageant industry in Nigeria is dying.

5 Beauty Queens forget the essence and core reasons why they are being crowned, they feel it’s just a platform to take dazzling photos for Instagram or go partying in all the biggest lounges & nightclubs in the city.

Christianity EtcCalled To Glory by ifeben(op): 10:39am On Jul 25, 2017
*CALLED TO GLORY is not for the man who’s now dead,

*In whose lifetime, neglected the good news he heard.

*In my living body, I am the one CALLED TO GLORY,

*And this is real, much more than a story.

*He bought me, blest me and empowered me.

*Gave me His spirit, made me just as He is,

*Became poor that I might be rich,

*Was slain that I might live.

*Called me out of the darkness in which many still grope,

*Blest me with all blessings,

*Given me all that concerns life,

*Made me his icon and representation,

*Such that as He is, so am I in this world.

*This is so profound, indeed it’s true.

*I have been CALLED TO GLORY and virtue,

*To show forth Beauty, Majesty and Excellence.

*Yes an excellency He’s made me,

*As I believed Him and confessed Him as Lord,

*I was then CALLED TO GLORY.

*I am the Light of the world,

*Showing men the way they must go.

*I arise and shine because I’ve been CALLED TO GLORY,

*I shine brighter than the sun, brighter than the stars.

*He made me His masterpiece, centerpiece and workmanship.

*Bestowing great treasures in me, a clayey vessel.

*Calling me to realms that transcend the terrestrial,

*With an ever increasing splendour and grandeur,

*A pulsating life that reaches the sublime and celestial.

*That’s my CALL TO GLORY.

*A call to take up serpents without being hurt.

*A call to live like God and become as He is even in this world.

*A call to arise above fear and condemnation, sin, sickness and death.

*I have been CALLED TO GLORY.

*Why remain in the dark alley? Come to Glory street,

*Where there’s no darkness and shadows of your past misdeeds,

*Where you exchange your weakness for strength

*Sickness for health and receive life for death

*The stains are much but they don’t matter,

*In fact it makes it easier so my friend why bother?

*Draw closer and be CALLED TO GLORY,

*You’ll no more see yourself as before,

*You become as Him, a true Victor.

*My people, it is my beautiful story,

*That indeed I’ve been CALLED TO GLORY.

PoliticsNnamdi Kanu: To Be Rearrested Or Not by ifeben(op): 10:27am On Jul 25, 2017
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and Director of Radio Biafra has been the centerpiece of the news for over one year.

Ever since his arrest in October 2015 and his subsequent trial for treason amongst other offences, his popularity and sympathy of the average Igbo man to his cause has spiked, but may have now reached the end of the graph and facing diminishing returns such that passion has been displaced by the recent utterances of Kanu and the same people that agitated for his release will heave a sigh of relief if the bail which he currently enjoys is revoked.

Prior to his bail some months ago, Mazi Kanu was seen as the hope of the Ibo. In him, the Biafran ideal was made flesh. This got the people so sentimentally attached to his ordeal. There were reports of prayer vigils being organized by various groups for divine intervention for Kanu to be released from the Kuje Prisons. A lot of political manoeuvre by the Ibo intelligentsia and elite led by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo was deployed to secure the release of the man Kanu. Indeed, the agitation was beyond just the Ibo. Deji Adeyanju, a political activist and his associates were teargassed and severally arrested by the police when they marched on the streets of Abuja to demand for the release of our man. There was pressure from everywhere.

Thus when in April the bail was finally granted by the Federal High Court presided by Justice Binta Nyako, there was wild jubilation and ecstasy. It was the expectation that now out of detention, Kanu would provide the leadership to realize the dream of a self reliant and egalitarian society he so eloquently sermonized about from London on Radio Biafra.

Alas, all the actions and activities of Kanu these past few weeks after his release has betrayed the hopes of all and sundry. He spoke so disdainfully of former President Goodluck Jonathan, calling him a failure of immense proportion and all sorts of abusive names. He proceeded on an undisguised offensive against former President Olusegun Obasanjo whom Kanu not only insulted, but went ahead to issue out threats against the international statesman old enough to be his father. According to Kanu, Obasanjo and his family will be wiped out for daring to challenge him according to Kanu. This attitude of Kanu is not only embarrassing and disdainful, it is one that runs against the grain of the Ibo tradition which emphasizes the respect of an Elder by the younger.

Kanu proceeded to cast aspersions on the Ibo political class whom he denounced as the slaves of the Hausa-Fulani political establishment. Worthy of note is the fact that it was this same political class that ensured that a critical component of Kanu’s bail was fulfilled, namely the production of a surety who is a Senator. As though not done, Kanu has proceeded against the cream of the Ibo society, namely, the leadership of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo whom he described in the most derogatory terms too sour to be restated here. He denounced the body as incapable of speaking for the Ibo whilst assuming himself to be the new Ibo leader. It is interesting that this was the same August body that agitated for his release from jail. It is said of the fool who after eating a bowl of fufu felt that he could challenge his chi to a fight. Kanu has shown himself as the warrior who assumes that all his enemies are now dead and so can afford to kill his medicine man.

To cap it all, Kanu basking in the euphoria of being the self-acclaimed new Ibo leader, recently unilaterally issued a decree that there will not be gubernatorial election in Anambra state except his call for referendum is honoured. By this action, Kanu has exposed his hypocrisy and shown his political inclination. It is the agreement of all critical minds that Kanu is only dancing to the tunes of some political paymaster who faces political insecurity and would do everything to truncate the electoral process. Nnamdi Kanu must be told that his agitation for self determination is not at large. Same must be factored in to the Universal and fundamental Rights of the people of Anambra state to vote and be voted for. More So, self-determination begins from the individual and no person especially one not elected have a right as Kanu has done to dictate and issue proclamations for another.

It is understood that the Federal Government is only being careful not to exacerbate and escalate an already tense situation, else it is beyond argument that Kanu has severally flouted all the conditions of the bail which he currently enjoys. Nnamdi Kanu has now become the tsetse fly perching on the scrotum which must be removed with extreme care. Even the same people that agitated for his release are now calling for his re-arrest.

While the majority of Ibos in secret wish that the necessary political will be summoned by the Federal Government in order to remove the nuisance that Kanu has constituted himself to, the radical elements amongst Ibo youths who still hold Kanu in some awe and esteem think otherwise. Herein lies the dilemma. As Shakespeare once said, to be or not to be, that is the question.

PoliticsN24.6bn Delta State Paris Club Debt Refund:time For Okowa To End The EGO ARIA Ch by ifeben(op): 3:24pm On Jul 22, 2017
Since his assumption of office over two years ago, the Okowa administration has been criticized for a range of issues. Despite the modest achievements in the area of road infrastructure around the state capital and skill acquisition as well as the payment of salaries, it has failed in a number of areas such as the obligations to the senior citizens by way of pensions and gratuities.

The Okowa administration has also been accused of withholding local government Council funds thus leading to several months arrears of salary owed to Local Government employees.

Another area where the Okowa administration has been adjudged to have neglected is the integrated development of the major cities in the state. The complaint has been that apart from the state capital and the Owa township where the Governor hails from, other towns and cities in the state have been largely neglected with no visible dividend of democracy in terms of critical infrastructures.

Furthermore, the embargo on employment in the Delta State Civil Service has also been a regular source of concern by Deltans with civil service aspirations.

Whenever the above concerns are raised, the response of the Okowa media machine is the refrain of EGO ARIA, a word loosely translated from the Governor’s native (Ika language) meaning ‘No money’.

According to the EGO ARIA refrain which the Okowa administration has become associated with, the state cannot meet up with certain demands in the face of the dwindling financial fortune of the state. When this refrain was initiated, Deltans believed and sympathised with the state government and had to adjust the demands in the face of the realities of the times. It was the hope of everyone that with time, the fortunes of the state would improve and there would be no excuses anymore.

The EGO ARIA philosophy has been vigorously pursued by the handlers and surrogates of the Okowa administration despite the monthly allocations to Delta State of N7 billion plus N5 billion Local government Council allocations, the monthly Budget Support Funds of N2 Billion, commercial Banks loans approved by the House of Assembly, over N10 Billion bail out funds from the Federal Government, monthly IGR of over N7 billion and most recently, the Paris Club Debt Refund in the total sum of over N24.5 Billion recently paid in two tranches. With these revenue receipts accruing to the state government, it is only surprising that the Okowa administration has elevated the EGO ARIA philosophy.

With the recent N24.5bn Paris Club debt refund, the Delta State Government must give attention to the areas it has neglected since the inception of the administration. This is the time to pay the deserved pensions and gratuities to the senior citizens who have spent their productive years in the service of the state.

It is on record that civil servants who retired between late 2013 and 2016 have been deprived of their gratuity leading several of them to their early graves. Governor Okowa must not use the EGO ARIA mantra to perpetuate this abomination.

Also the several months arrears of salary owed to Local Government employees should be a major component that the Paris Club funds should be applied towards.

The House of Assembly, the media, political parties, Civil Society Groups and Deltans must monitor the disbursement and application of this fund to ensure that it is applied for the benefit of Deltans who have been worst hit by the EGO ARIA policy of the state government.

The admonition by the Federal Ministry of Finance to State governments, is to prioritize the payment of salaries, gratuities and pensions with the Paris Club funds, is a welcome development but Deltans must be alert and ensure that the Okowa administration does not defeat this admonition with its EGO ARIA mantra.

PoliticsNigerian Senate: Islam Is Nigeria’s State Religion by ifeben(op): 7:25pm On Jul 21, 2017
On Thursday the 20th of July 2017, the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria passed a resolution mandating the Federal Government through the Central Bank of Nigeria to grant a concession of N200 per dollar for Nigerian Muslims going for the 2017 Hajj in Saudi Arabia.

According to the Senate, this was an intervention to help reduce the cost of this year’s Pilgrimage for the poor who cannot afford same. This resolution is not only strange, it raises some questions which every senator that voted to approve such a resolution must ponder about.

First and foremost, it is agreed that Hajj as one of the five pillars of Islam was commanded by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) . But this injunction was not made at large. The prophet took cognizance of the cost implications of the faithful embarking on a journey from around the world to Mecca, Hegira and Medina thus qualifying the Hajj for only those who can afford it. By this, any person who cannot afford the cost of embarking on the Hajj is under no obligation whatsoever.

Simply put then, pilgrimage is not for the poor who would go to Mecca and starve to death and in most cases due to inability to get a decent accommodation, become public health nuisance. These poor pilgrims also could resort to begging, pick-pocketing and even stealing from richer pilgrims which will only serve to dent the image of the country.

Secondly, the resolution which basically introduces subsidy in the Muslim pilgrimage constitutes a gargantuan economic waste. There is no record of economic benefits that has accrued from the Hajj and using the country’s scarce foreign exchange for religious tourism is definitely a disservice to the ailing national economy.

The Senate should rather concern itself on how to grant subsidies and foreign exchange concessions to critical sectors of the economy such as agriculture and manufacturing that would end the current recession and make Nigeria a net exporter. This would garner foreign exchange for the country and force down the exchange rate of the Dollar to less than the amount stated in the Resolution as subsidy for the 2017 Hajj.

Thirdly and most importantly, by the resolution granting subsidy to Muslim pilgrims, the Senate has breached a very fundamental provision of the constitution by seeking to advance the cause of a religious group as though it were a state religion. Section 10 of the 1999 Constitution clearly proclaims the secularity of the Nigerian state by prohibiting the adoption of a state religion as the Senate has done.

On this score alone, this Resolution must be treated for what it is, unconstitutional, void and of no effect whatsoever. The Senate has thus boldly stated that Islam is Nigeria’s State Religion, a clear affront to the Nigerian Constitution.

It is only hoped that the Executive will be advised to see the constitutional breach in the Senate resolution and dismiss it.

This is a sad commentary on the men and women who sit in the hallowed chambers of the Senate supervising over a naked breach and violent rape of the constitution which they swore to defend.

One day, some of these Senators may wake up to find themselves unworthy of the appellation, “Distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

RomanceExam Cheating: Female Student Removes Bra For Search by ifeben(op): 6:27pm On May 09, 2017
An Indian student said Monday she was made to remove her bra in public by school authorities over exam cheating fears, minutes before sitting a crucial test.

Authorities issue strict dress codes to tackle widespread cheating on the entrance test for India’s prestigious medical colleges.

But there is no mention of bras on this year’s prohibited articles list which includes dark clothes, long sleeves, brooches, badges, closed shoes and socks.

The student, who has not been identified, told media she was at the test centre in Kerala state on Sunday when a metal detector started to beep during a security check.

“At that time, they told that without removing my innerwear I cannot enter the exam hall since they (bra hooks) are made of metal. So, I took off my bra there itself and gave it to my mom, she was waiting outside,” the student told NDTV news network.

The girl was quoted in The Times of India as saying that she lost all her “confidence and composure when I was asked to remove it in front of everybody”.

Another student’s parent said his daughter was forced to remove the button on her jeans after it set off the metal detector.

“She was sent back, she came back and told me ‘Papa, the jeans button has to be removed, the button is an objectionable item’. Promptly I removed the button,” the father told NDTV.

“Then I went to a shop about three kilometres from the exam centre and bought a new dress for her after getting the shop opened.”

The school principal said he was unaware of the student’s underwear ordeal but admitted his school stuck to the rules.

“We have clear instructions that if the metal detector beeps, no one can be allowed inside. Whenever it beeped, we told students to remove what they have,” Jalaluddin K. told NDTV.

Cheating in exams is common in India including paying large bribes to buy test papers, although there have been more elaborate ruses.

Hundreds of people were arrested in eastern Bihar state in 2015 for scaling the walls of schools and providing crib sheets and study materials to their relatives during exams.

BusinessDangote Group Begins Sugar Plantation And Factory In Taraba by ifeben(op): 2:02pm On May 03, 2017
The Dangote Group has extended its business frontiers with the commencement of a sugar plantation and factory project in Lau Local Government Area of Taraba state.

Taraba state Governor, Darius Ishaku made this known today in Jalingo shortly after signing a reviewed agreement with the company for the smooth take off of the project.

He said that the company paid the state government N1.2 billion as compensation for 16,000 hectares of land for the project in Lau Local Government after the two parties signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Ishaku regretted that a dispute on welfare of the host community was partly responsible for the 13 years delay in the commencement of the project.

He, however, commended the company for agreeing to perform its social responsibility, adding that the state would ensure that all land compensation issues were addressed.

The governor said the company would produce large quantity of sugar, animal feeds and ethanol, an energy source that he described as “white oil”.

Earlier, the state’s Commissioner for Justice, Mr Yusufu Akirikwen, said that the state currently had six per cent equity shares in Dangote Group, having successfully reviewed the contract it earlier signed.

He said that “after a careful study of the MoU, we discovered that there was no provision for the local people whose land would be used for the project andthe state government had no stake in the deal.”

The representative of Dangote Group, Mr Joseph Makoju, commended the governor “for his passion and commitment to clear all hitches on the way of the project.

“Dangote group is committed to making the country self-sufficient in rice and sugar, after our success story in cement business and that is why Lau Sugar project is very important to us.

“We are mindful of the governor’s insistence that the project must benefit the local people and we are equally committed in that regard.

“In all the places we do business, we embark on Community Social Responsibility (CSR) projects that are beneficial to host communities and Lau will not be an exception,” Makoju said.

He said that his team was already on ground planting sugarcane seedlings at the site of the project.
