EducationThese Nigerian Universities Produced The Most Startup Founders by Ifelander1(op): 5:22pm On Aug 04, 2021
University graduates are at an ideal time in their lives to start their own businesses. Their exposure to common societal problems predisposes them to develop innovative business ideas. A large portion of a country’s most prestigious private colleges and public universities do a pretty good job producing future founders. We have seen this happen from Harvard to Stanford producing founders like Bill Gates and Larry Page.

In Nigeria, while it may not be considered a major factor, the university plays a role in the development of an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset. According to a report “West African Startup Decade Report” by TechPoint Africa, Nigerian universities produced the highest number of founders (43.6%) at the bachelor’s degree level, followed closely by the US (29.8%) of the founders, and England (12%).

A closer look at the education of the startup founders in Nigeria revealed that Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Covenant University (CU), and the University of Lagos (Unilag) produced 12, 6, and 5 alumni respectively.

Top Nigerian Universities producing Millionaire startup founders

Here are top Nigerian Universities that produced Millionaire West African Startup (MWAS) founders.

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife

OAU has produced the largest number of the best and brightest startup founders in Nigeria. The institution was established in 1961 by the government of Western Nigeria led by late Chief Ladoke Akintola. In 2003, the school commissioned a Centre of Excellence in Software Engineering as well as a new ICT complex to meet computing needs and encourage tech innovation. It has also housed MIT’S iLab initiative since 2005 till the present date. Some of the notable startups founded by OAU alumni include:

Jobberman – founded by Ayodeji Adewunmi, Opeyemi Awoyemi and Olalekan Olude.
Kudi – founded by Yinka Adewale and Pelumi Aboluwarin.
TeamApt – founded by Tosin Eniolorunda
PropertyPro – founded by Fikayo Ogundipe
Flux – founded by Ben Eluan, Osezele Orukpe, Akintunde Israel, and Ayomide Lasaki
FarmCrowdy – founded by Onyeka Akumah

Covenant University

Covenant University is a private, Christian university located in Ota, Ogun state. It is one of the few universities that place a strong emphasis on ICT entrepreneurship. It built an ICT entrepreneurship hub called Hebron Startup Lab to facilitate a program that aims at producing more entrepreneurs among students of the university. Startups founded by CU alumni include:

PiggyVest – founded by Somtochukwu Ifezue, Odunayo Eweniyi, Joshua Chibueze,
PushCV – founded by Somtochukwu Ifezue, Odunayo Eweniyi, Joshua Chibueze,
MDaaS – Co-founded by Oluwasoga Oni

University of Lagos

The University of Lagos is one of the five 1st generation universities in Nigeria. It is a leading institution dedicated to quality teaching, learning, research, and community service. Since its establishment in 1962, the institution has continued to play a key role in nation-building by moulding the teeming youth population through its teaching, research, and community services. In 2020, Forbes listed UNILAG as the 3rd most productive school in educating entrepreneurs.
Publiseer, co-founded by Chidi Nwaogu and Chika Nwaogu
Buycoins, co-founded by Timi Ajiboye
A common trend was that MWAS founders from the same tertiary institution co-founded companies together. Also, at the postgraduate level, 57 founders studied abroad; most of them in the US (31), followed by England (12), France (4), Canada (2), and Germany (2). Only one MWAS founder obtained a postgraduate degree in West Africa.

PoliticsPresident Buhari Virtually Flags Off The Kano-maradi Rail Project by Ifelander1(op): 7:37pm On Feb 09, 2021
President Muhammadu Buhari has flagged off the Kano-Maradi railway project.

At the virtual event on Tuesday, Buhari said the rail project further strengthens his administration’s commitment to improving the transport sector and promoting economic activities.

He said the rail line traverses the major commercial and administrative centre of Kano and passing through other economic hubs of the country including Kazaure, Daura, Katsina and up to the border town of Jibiya and the Niger Republic city of Maradi.

“The cities of Jibiya and Maradi constitute a significant trading core between Nigeria and the Niger Republic – a tradition dating back many centuries,” he said.

“This vital infrastructure line will establish an end-to-end logistic supply chain in railway transport services between northern and southern regions of the country, reaching Nigerian southern ports of Lagos and Warri.

“The Kano–Maradi rail line has been identified as a viable line that will significantly enhance the movement of passengers and freight to the hinterland, especially raw materials from both agricultural and mineral resources for our industries.

“The project, when completed, would serve the import and export of goods to the Niger Republic and other countries in the sub-region through Nigerian ports. The country would earn revenue through expansion of trade and commerce, while the people of Niger Republic will benefit from the ease of transportation logistics at an affordable cost in their import and export business.

“The connection to the Niger Republic through rail will also foster Trans-Sahara trade and contribute to the expected gains in the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement.”

Speaking on other projects, Buhari said in the eastern corridor of the country, the Port Harcourt–Enugu–Makurdi–Maiduguri rail line with branches to Owerri, Imo state and Damaturu, Yobe state have been awarded for reconstruction to include a deep seaport in Bonny Island and a railway industrial park in Port Harcourt.

He added that financial arrangements are being made with other partners on the West-East coastal rail line from Lagos to Calabar and linking Onitsha, Benin, Warri, Yenegao, Port Harcourt, Aba and Uyo.

In September, the federal executive council approved $1.96 billion for the Kano-Maradi rail project.

The 248km railway project will start from Kano, pass through Dambatta, Kazaure, Daura, Mashi, Katsina, Jibia and terminate in Maradi.

The federal government had signed a memorandum of understanding with Mota-Engil Group, the railway project contractor. It said the Kano-Maradi railway project would be completed within 36 months.

Speaking on a Channels TV programme on Sunday, Amaechi said the funds for the railway project will be sourced from Europe

Mardi, Maradi, Maradi, my friend is Niger republic. Call it whatever you like, it's in Niger republic, not in Republic of Nigeria!
Having a rail line from Kano to Katsina is already a non-viable economic endeavor, but going to borrow almost $2 B to extend it to a Niger republic city if Maradi is not only an economic treason, but a political crime committed against all Nigerians who suffer, because of the non functional eastern railway corridor.
Those in government are not dumb you know, Niger is a land-locked country, and Nigeria wants to encourage Niger to use our ports for both imports and exports to the tune of billions of dollars, keep in mind that Benin, Ghana are also jostling for Niger to use their seaports.. This is the diversification that we all wanted and will also increase our revenue. This plan has been hatched years ago and isn't new.
Of course we also need to work on our internal infrastructure.

Good.. Although it is quite disheartening that this infrastructures are just being put in place in the year 2020. With the oil boom and high prices and when the economy was 'supposedly' working, infrastructure were non-existent.

You can only truly grow as far as the level of infrastructure in a country.

Judging from how long it took to construct Ibadan to Lagos rail, I expect the project to be ready by 2050 if not abandoned.

That said, I commend Buhari for initiating such project in the first place.
Lagos- ibadan rail started in 2017, rail tracks have been completed with only the train stations left to be completed by December..

Not holding briefs for this one though cos this is Nigeria.

PoliticsOkowa To Nigerians: Support PDP Back To Power In 2023 For Good Governance, Infra by Ifelander1(op): 9:20pm On Sep 27, 2020
By Festus Ahon – Asaba

Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, Sunday urged Nigerians to support the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP back to power in 2023 to restore good governance, including infrastructural development in the country.

Okowa who stated this at a thanksgiving service, said the PDP would do everything possible with the support of Nigerians to win the 2023 presidential election.

He said the party was working very hard to win more states in the country as a precursor to getting back control of the presidency which it lost in 2015.

The Governor said with the abysmal performance of the All Progressives Congress, APC led Federal Government, Nigerians were already convinced on the imperative of voting back PDP to power in 2023.

While thanking leaders, youths and women for their support for the party since inception, Okowa said with such encouragement, PDP would take over the Federal Government in 2023.

He said: “We have come here to give thanks to God because whatever we achieve in life is not the work of any man. Man can try but whatever we do is by the will of God that we triumph and it is only normal that we return all the glory to God.

“We must learn to work with everybody in the state irrespective of their tribe because everyone matters in building a political party.

Before the last general elections, we assured our members in the state that we will organise free, fair and credible primaries for all aspirants.

“At the end of all the primaries, our party members realised that we meant business when we said we will organise credible primaries for aspirants because some aspirants close to me lost while some that are not close to me also won.

“Once we are able to recognise that everybody matters in the party it becomes very easy to control the party”, soliciting support for the party to succeed and urged all political appointees to support their wards to hold meetings.

Okowa who spoke further, told aspirants in the upcoming local government council elections in the state to exercise restraint in their consultations and campaigns, disclosing that the election would not hold in January 2021 as being speculated.

PoliticsRe: Opinion About The Attack On Tinubu And Godfatherism by Ifelander1(f): 8:15pm On Sep 27, 2020
LegendHero:
Awo is the Yoruba political Godfather and what he did for us is visible even to this current generation.

Akintola betrayed the cause when he allied with the North because they sold him a dummy that they are going to end Godfatherism.

Now ask yourself, what did we achieve from Akintola and what are the legacies that can be attributed to him?

Both Godfatherism or a lack of it still bore down to performance. If you don’t perform then the people will turn their back against you.

Tinubu was able to achieve that status in Lagos because he gave them Fashola who performed above expectation and Tinubu banked on his own former tentacles and utilized Fashola achievement as a better leverage.

Even Buhari 2015 was able to harness the Tinubu/Fashola goodwill because Fashola was the poster boy for APC then in the press.

When Tinubu’s mate are going to Abuja as senator in 2007, he stood back home in Lagos and focused on making Lagos his own universe. If he don’t support performing politicians, then a million Godfather cannot hold the people of Lagos from voting them out.

In as much as Tinubu APC continue to produce performing governors in Lagos, then a trillion PDP cannot depose them.

He was born with politics, grew in politics, schooled in politics, and graduated with politics.

Asiwaju omo olodo ide!
Don't mind them, they enjoyed Fashola but want to ignore the effort of the one who made it possible..

PoliticsNigeria Increases AFDB Rights Before Presidency Vote by Ifelander1(op): 12:33am On Aug 27, 2020
Nigeria almost doubled its voting rights in the African Development Bank to 16.8% before the lender’s annual meetings this week, as one of its own seeks re-election to the top post.

Africa’s most populous nation is now the biggest rights holder by far, followed by non-regional members Germany with 7.4% and the U.S. with 5.5%
, according to a memorandum sent to governors on Aug. 20 and seen by Bloomberg. Nigeria boosted its voting power by paying subscriptions it had pledged as part of a general capital increase, for which the bulk of payments are expected to be made before the final October 2021 deadline.

The move may allow Nigeria to help keep Akinwumi Adesina in the presidency for another five-year term when the vote takes place on Aug. 27. Unlike in 2015, when he faced off against Chadian Finance Minister Kordje Bedoumra and Cape Verde’s Agriculture Minister Cristina Duarte, Adesina is currently the sole candidate.

The annual meetings will take place virtually after they were postponed in May because of the spread of the coronavirus. The election of the president and meetings of the lender’s board of governors are the main topics set down for the two-day online gathering, which begins on Wednesday.

Last month, an independent panel backed an African Development Bank probe that in May said it found no evidence of wrongdoing by Adesina, 60, clearing the way for his bid to seek re-election as head of the continent’s biggest multilateral lender.
