Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, the Registrar of the National Examinations Council (NECO) made it known to the public that several universities in the United Kingdom are now considering the admission of Nigerian students based on their NECO results.

Prof. Wushishi disclosed that Birmingham City University and Lead University in the United Kingdom contacted NECO for information on its examinations. This outreach indicates that NECO findings are increasingly being recognized and accepted by foreign educational institutions.

During an interactive session with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, May 15, Prof. Wushishi revealed that NECO has already fulfilled the requirements of Birmingham City University and is actively working to fulfill the requests of Lead University.

Prof. Wushishi also talked about the challenges posed by the complexity of NECO examinations, which hinder an immediate shift to computer-based testing (CBT). Career / University: The Untapped Goldmine Of Connections You’re Ignoring – First Series by Ifutureconnect: 3:50pm On Feb 26
I think the social network a university provides is the most underutilized resource anyone who have access to it misses.

University is that place that provides you with a plethora of opportunity to meet people of different walks of life, cadre, age, cultural background, orientation, affluence, grace, strengths and wits.

It is however sad that students don't often utilize this opportunity in its grandeur and splendor while still in school.

I may be wrong, but I don't think there's any other social institution that brings people together in that huge number for a number of years meeting everyday, engaging in coursework and other related activities together other than tertiary institutions. You can't possibly have such an opportunity again once you're out of school.

I see that a lot of students are setting themselves up for future regrets and moments of "had I known" by not networking with people on campus.

Some students only know their HOC and maybe a few other persons in the entire school. This, as much is it's a personal choice is one of the choices one makes in life and regret later. Simply because you can't go back to the university to do what you were supposed to do right when you were there.

A lot of people make the mistake of seeing only the present of people in our lives so we don't think of them as any big deal. But right there in your classroom are future governors, senators, ministers, CEO(s) of a big conglomerate, captains of industries, policy makers, investors, business owners, superstars etc. But they don't look like it yet because they are going through the process of what will make them become it.

One of the lessons I've learnt is that most of the creme de là creme of the society today who are movers and shakers of the country or the world are often friends/associates who met in the university and who took their friendship/association further in life to leverage each other's strengths and resources to grow individually and collectively.

You see, the university is a goldmine if you know how to identify gold in its ore form and its refined form.

I find it quite disturbing that people whose chances are naturally low at big things in life due to their background and other related circumstances still choose to play it small in the university, not networking with people at all throughout their years.

Here's it, your first major development and growth in life will come from people who can take a chance on you. Imagine not making efforts to connect with anyone at all?

I have always told my students, ensure you network wide, vertically, horizontalally, laterally and in other forms.

You don't necessarily need to befriend too many people but build a wide network of people. The goodness you desire in life is actually already crafted in people. It is your people's skill that will get it out for you.

You may think life ends in the university but indeed, life is just starting after graduation. By the time you're graduating, the friends you left at the neighborhood are no longer around, everyone has gone ahead with their lives. Now imagine not building any network while in school.

One of the lessons I share with my students often is, build relationships with your lecturers, don't just know your lectures, let some of them know you by name, by face and by some other personal attributes of yours.

I've heard of so many cases where students are trying to secure scholarships and one of the major requirements is their academic references. Someone who can write on their behalf to speak to their attitude, character and competence.

In so many instances, long after the students have left the institution, it's always a full-time struggle to get a lecturer who will write the references for them simply because no one know them that much.

Now if they manage to get a lecturer to write for them, the lecture will write just something random and won't be able to speak to any form of strong interpersonal relationship he or she has with the student. And this, oftentimes, put the application in a state of credibility disadvantage.

I wish there's a course designed to teach students from their year one on campus the essence of building meaningful relationships while on campus.

The ability to network when and where necessary is as important as having either a first class or 2'1 grade from the university.

Please if you're still a student, connect with your departmental mates, extend beyond your department to your faculty and other faculties while working hard on becoming what you'd want to become so that you'd be known for something and you won't be just that guy/lady who's popular on campus but for no significant reason.

And let some of this connection be deeper, start business together, build brands together, set up organizations together, become associates, be more than departmental mates because that title will soon phase out.

Learn to connect with people while you're still on campus, connect with your fellowship/mosque people. In fact that's one of the reasons it's called "fellowship".

Connect with the non-academic staff, the security guards, the traffic wardens, the drivers, the bike-riders, within and outside the campus community. Life always present cases where the essence of those connection will matter. If you can't connect directly with these kind of people, connect with someone who has such pool of connection.

At this point, the question many readers have is "how can I start to strategically build my network?"

I will address this in the next series.
Just ensure to follow up on this series.

Remember, the goal is to make the rest of our lives the best of our lives.

Toheeb Bisiriyu.

Sports / AFCON: Reasons Behind Super’ Eagles Defeat Against Ivory Coast - Ifutureconect by Ifutureconnect: 4:06pm On Feb 12
The Super Eagles lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in a heartbreaking defeat, ending their AFCON 2023 trophy dreams at the Stade Alassane Ouattara on Sunday.

The Nigerian national team, led by Coach Jose Peseiro, was the favourite to win this year’s AFCON tournament after the elimination of other big African teams such as Senegal, Egypt, and Cameroon.

The Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, opened the scoring with a brilliant header in the first half. However, Frank Kessie’s header canceled the goal in the 62nd minute.

At the same time, the Dortmund striker Sebastian Haller who recently won a battle with cancer scored the winner in the 81st minute. This marks the end of the Super Eagles hope to clinch their fourth AFCON title.

The team has won only 3 titles out of 8 finals they have reached. It has been a shocking result for Nigerian national team fans, many of whom have expressed disappointment in the results.

Here are reasons behind Super Eagles’ defeat against Ivory Coast in AFCON final

Defensive Vulnerabilities:

The defensive weaknesses of the Super Eagles, which were evident in the semi-finals against Bafana Bafana, reappeared when facing the Ivorian team.

In the first 45 minutes of the game, Nigeria allowed nine shots on goal. Regrettably, they failed to rectify this issue in the second half, as the Ivorian team managed to unleash another nine shots.

As a consequence of what seemed to be subpar defending, Nigeria conceded two goals during the match.

Factors

Lack of Organization: The Super Eagles might have struggled with organizing their defense effectively, leaving gaps or failing to mark opposing players tightly.

Set Piece Weakness: Ivory Coast could have capitalized on set pieces, exploiting any weaknesses the Super Eagles had in defending corners, free kicks, or throw-ins.

Individual Errors: Defensive players might have made individual mistakes, such as mistimed tackles, poor positioning, or errors in judgment, leading to goals conceded.

Tactical Errors:

The coach implemented two alterations to the squad that overcame South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in the semi-finals, substituting Bright-Osayi Samuel and Moses Simon with Zaidu Sanusi and forward Samuel Chukwueze.

Although these changes seemed customary to most, certain fans and analysts cautioned that they might disturb the Super Eagles’ ongoing success. Both Simon and Bright-Osayi delivered commendable performances in the semi-finals, aiding Nigeria’s progression to the final.

However, upon the Ivorians seizing the lead, the Portuguese coach acknowledged his mistake and promptly replaced both players.

Factors

Wrong Formations: The coaching staff might have chosen formations that were ineffective against Ivory Coast’s style of play, leaving the team vulnerable in certain areas of the pitch.

Suboptimal Player Selection: If key players were left out of the starting lineup or substitutions were made too late or without addressing key weaknesses, it could have weakened the team’s performance.

Failure to Adapt: Inability to adapt to changes in Ivory Coast’s tactics or game flow during the match could have led to the Super Eagles being outmaneuvered or exploited in certain areas of the pitch.

Lack of Cohesion:
Limited Chemistry: The team might have lacked sufficient time to develop cohesion and understanding among players due to recent changes in the squad or limited training time.

Ineffective Communication: Poor communication on the field can lead to misunderstandings, misplaced passes, or defensive lapses, hindering the team’s ability to maintain possession and create scoring opportunities.

Tactical Disunity: If players failed to execute the coach’s tactical instructions cohesively, it could result in disjointed play and vulnerability to counterattacks.

Individual Mistakes:

Missed Opportunities: Strikers failing to convert clear goal-scoring opportunities or midfielders squandering possession in crucial moments could have cost the Super Eagles valuable chances to score.

Defensive Lapses: Individual defensive errors, such as mistimed tackles, poor clearances, or misjudgments in aerial duels, might have directly led to goals conceded.

Disciplinary Issues: Red cards or frequent fouls committed by individual players can disrupt the team’s rhythm, force tactical adjustments, and potentially leave the team vulnerable to counterattacks or set pieces.

Education / ASUU Sets To Embark On Nationwide Strike, Holds Meeting With Members by Ifutureconnect: 11:34pm On Feb 04
Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has stated that the Federal Government has yet to fulfill all agreements made with organized labor, specifically those involving ASUU, since President Bola Tinubu’s inauguration in May 2023.

He conveyed this information during a press briefing earlier in the week at the Gidan Kwano Main Campus of the Federal University of Technology (FUT) Minna, located in the capital of Niger State. Additionally, he mentioned that members of the National Executive Council (NEC) are presently engaged in nationwide consultations with branch members of the union. The objective is to make informed decisions regarding the next course of action after the upcoming NEC meeting later this month.

Professor Osodeke expressed regrets that despite the gentlemen agreement between the union and the Federal Government, no dime had been paid to its members, thereby creating unnecessary hardship for their families.

Asked if promises made by the Federal Government had been fulfilled, Osodeke said: “Well, none has been implemented. On the issue of wage award and the issue of seven and half salary arrears, I can tell you that nothing has been implemented. In fact, as I am talking to you now, none of our members has been paid.”

On the possibility of embarking on industrial action to press home their demands, ASUU boss said the association will present all the suggestions gathered during its nationwide consultations at the NEC meeting and take necessary action.
