Phones / Is This True About The GLO Overload Data? by igetemi(m): 10:21am On Jun 13, 2016
I see alot of people complaining that the newly introduced Glo overload data is a scam (it zaps too fast).
I am planning to subscribe to 10GB for #2500 and don't want to waste my money on it.

Is it true it zaps quickly or people are just planning to defame the data plan.

Phones / Samsung Made A Case That Turns The Note 5 Into A Blackberry by igetemi(m): 10:49pm On Aug 24, 2015

Android manufacturers have tried phones with physical keyboards before, but they just didn’t have much staying power. Samsung is bringing QWERTY back with the Galaxy Note 5 — with a twist.

The physical keyboard Samsung unveiled when they introduced the Galaxy Note 5 today isn’t part of the phone. It’s a case that snaps on, much like the IP-infringing one that Ryan Seacrest’s pet startup tried to sneak past Blackberry. Samsung is a lot more likely to avoid pesky litigation, given their rather chummy relationship with the Waterloo, Ontario company in recent years.

In addition to a full QWERTY keyboard, Samsung’s case adds three throwback physical buttons that take you back to the early days of Android phones: back, home, and menu. Clip the case on, and the Note 5’s screen adapts to its presence. It’s a bit like how their S-View covers work, blanking out a portion of the screen and displaying information only where you can actually see it. Pop the case off, and things return to normal. You can pinch, zoom, tap, and scribble all over its 5.7-inch diagonal screen.

The Galaxy Note 5 is powered by the same Exynos 7420 processor that Samsung used in the Galaxy S6, and they’ve paired it with a generous 4GB of RAM. It also has a 16MP rear-facing camera and the AMOLED display boasts Quad HD resolution (1440 x 2560 pixels and 518ppi).
But while you can clip on a QWERTY keyboard, you won’t be popping in a micro SD card to expand the Note 5’s internal storage or hot-swapping a dead battery for one that’s fully charged. Like the Galaxy S6, the Note 5 doesn’t have a removable back. It appears that Samsung has finally decided that the profit margins on Apple-style NAND upsells are just too good to ignore.
Computers / Pirate Sites Ban Windows 10 Over Snooping Concerns by igetemi(m): 10:36pm On Aug 24, 2015

Downloading a copy of Jurassic World might be a little trickier this week. If you’ve upgraded your computer to Windows 10, you might no longer be welcome on certain torrent sites.

Over the past couple of weeks several torrent trackers have started blocking users that run Windows 10. Why? According to one group — iTS — “Windows 10 sends the contents of your local disks directly to one of their servers.” Sounds frightening, right? And it would be, if it was true — especially if the contents included pirate downloads.

The reality, however, is that Windows 10 isn’t doing a heck of a lot different than its predecessors do. And that license agreement that had the Internet up in arms recently? It applies to Microsoft’s many cloud-connected services, not Windows — so if you’re using them on Windows 7, 8.1, or even XP then you’re “being snooped on” as much as a Windows 10 user is.

Another common complaint is that Microsoft shares data with MarkMonitor, a company that provides “full-spectrum anti-piracy solutions for digital content.” Generally, that information is used to prevent phishing attacks or to supplement SmartScreen’s trusted software database. Again — this isn’t specific to Windows 10.

If you really are a hardcore pirate who’s not going to take this kind of crap from a service provider, though, you really ought to know how to flick the necessary switches to disable the kind of data transmission these torrent sites are up in arms about. That, or you should be using Linux or have a nice, configurable firewall set up — or both.

Phones / Hydrogen Fuel Cell Integrated Into Iphone 6 Powers It For A Week by igetemi(m): 10:08pm On Aug 24, 2015

Fuel cells have been promising to solve the rechargeable battery problem for years now. Rather than relying on a battery that takes hours to recharge once drained, you instead have hydrogen fuel cells that can be instantly topped up for hours more use. We haven’t seen such a fuel cell system make it into a mass-market device just yet, but a British company has now managed to hook one up to a modern smartphone.
The company in question is called Intelligent Energy. What they’ve managed to do is add a very slim hydrogen fuel cell to an iPhone 6. It doesn’t replace the need for a rechargeable battery, instead complementing it. However, the combination means that the iPhone can run for an entire week without need of a recharge.

Intelligent Systems is thought to be working closely with Apple on the prototype and importantly they’ve managed to integrate the fuel cell without needing to modify the iPhone. The only difference users will see is the back of the iPhone covered in vents. This is necessary to allow heat and water vapor to escape, but you’ll never notice it happening.

The fuel cell works by creating electricity from hydrogen and oxygen with the waste products being water vapor and heat. That electricity is then used to keep the iPhone battery topped up and powering the phone. When the fuel cell runs out of hydrogen it can be topped up with a cartridge.

Typically with fuel cell news it ends with “now they just have to make it small enough” or “they just need to find a commercial partner.” However, in the case of Intelligent Energy, the fuel cell is already small enough and Apple is thought to be on board. All they need to do now is design a disposable cartridge for the refills and decide on pricing.
Webmasters / The Best Websites To Learn Coding Online by igetemi(m): 4:42pm On Aug 24, 2015
The Learn to Code movement has picked up momentum worldwide and that is actually a good thing as even basic programming skills can have a major impact. If you can teach yourself how to write code, you gain a competitive edge over your peers, you can think more algorithmically and thus can tackle problems more efficiently.

There’s no reason why shouldn’t know the basics of coding. You can automate tasks, you can program your Excel sheets, improve workflows, you can extract data from websites and accomplish so much more with code. You may not be in the business of writing software programs but knowing the basics of coding will help you communicate more effectively with developers.
Gone are the days when you had to enroll in expensive computer training classes as now exist a plethora of web-based courses that will help you learn programming at your own pace in the comfort of your web browser.

The Best Sites to Learn Programming

If you are ready to take the plunge, here are some of the best websites that offer courses in a variety of programming languages for free. I have also added a list of companion ebooks that will give you a more in-depth understanding of the language and they don’t cost anything either.
Science/Technology / Xiaomi, The Apple Of China, Is Coming To Nigeria & Other Africa Countries by igetemi(m): 9:49am On Aug 24, 2015
Xiaomi isn’t just another Chinese mobile company, it is the most valuable mobile company in China commonly referred to as the Apple of China. It successfully took Apple’s place in China by producing well designed, quality Android devices and took the low end market from Samsung by bringing the price even lower than expected.

Xiaomi can be described as a successful mobile company and it came as no surprise when it announced it is venturing into the fastest growing mobile market in the world. For a company that fully understands the low-end market, it’s safe to assume the company it’s bound to succeed in Africa. Mobile technology enthusiasts have long anticipated this and as a matter of fact, it’s long overdue.

Yezz Mobile, an American company, which came into Nigeria about a couple of months ago failed to do a proper market survey as pointed out by TechRez in a recent article. Looking at Xiaomi’s success in China, however, it is obvious the company reduces profit margin on hardware and profits through software. This enables it to sell quality phones at very affordable prices and that has been key to its success.

The company plans to launch two smartphones in Africa come September: The Red Mi 2 (costing $160) and M4 ($320).

According to an article on Forbes, the phones will be distributed by Mobile In Africa and they are setting up online stores in 14 countries. This strategy is quite similar to how Xiaomi markets its products in China.

RJ van Spaandonk, president of Mobile in Africa said,
I think Xiaomi is currently the one of the most exciting mobile internet brands. It is very well suited to the needs and income levels of the emerging middle classes in Africa. There is a great need for mobile technology in Africa that is of top-notch quality but still affordable. What I found in Xiaomi is a company, and a business model, that can accommodate the needs of African consumers.

Coming to Africa, Xiaomi will have to compete with existing brands to gain relevance. In the first quarter of the year, it was reported that Samsung, Tecno and Apple were the three biggest players in the African mobile market accounting for 55% of all phones sold across Africa.
Infinix also is coming up strong, and with the launch of its first Android One phone which is the first in the whole of Africa, the game is getting even more interesting.

Phones / How To Factory Reset Your Android Phone Or Tablet When It Won’t Boot by igetemi(m): 8:31pm On Aug 23, 2015

Safe mode can help you troubleshoot your Android, but sometimes you’ll need to wipe everything and restore your device to its factory state. You can even perform a factory reset when your Android phone or tablet won’t boot normally.
Ensure you have any important data backed up before doing a reset. This includes your Google Authenticator credentials, which will be lost during the reset. Disable two-factor authentication on your accounts first or you’ll experience some trouble afterwards.

If You Can’t Boot
If safe mode doesn’t help fix your device, you can perform a hard reset by booting into a special recovery mode. First, ensure your device is fully shut down.
Press and hold the correct keys to boot the device into recovery mode. This will vary from device to device. Here are some examples:
Nexus 7: Volume Up + Volume Down + Power
Samsung Galaxy S3: Volume Up + Home + Power
Motorola Droid X: Home + Power
Devices With Camera Buttons: Volume Up + Camera
Similar devices will likely use similar key combinations. For example, the Nexus 4 also uses Volume Up + Volume Down + Power.
If your device isn’t on this list and none of the above methods work, do a Google search for the name of your device and “recovery mode” – or look in the device’s manual or support pages.
Release the buttons when the device powered on. You’ll see an image of an Android lying on its back with its chest open and its internals revealed.
android-boot-menu
Press the Volume Up and Volume Down keys to scroll through the options until you seeRecovery mode on the screen.
recovery-mode-option
Press the Power button to restart into recovery mode. You’ll soon see an Android with a red triangle.
android-recovery-mode
Hold down the Power button and tap Volume Up. You’ll see the Android system recovery menu appear at the top of your screen.
android-system-recovery-menu
Select wipe data / factory reset with the volume keys and tap the Power button to activate it.
Select Yes – erase all user data with the volume buttons and tap Power. Your device will be reset to its factory state and all your data will be erased.
android-wipe-data-factory-reset
If your device freezes at any point, hold down the Power button until it restarts.
If You Can Boot
You can reset your Android phone or tablet normally from its Settings screen. Tap the Backup & reset option on the latest versions of Android or tap Privacy if you’re using Android 2.3.
android-backup-and-reset
Tap the Factory data reset option and to through the reset of the steps to confirm the factory reset.
android-factory-data-reset
If the factory reset process doesn’t fix your problems – or doesn’t work at all – it’s likely that there’s a problem with your device’s hardware. If it’s still under warranty, you should have it fixed or replaced.
(There’s one exception to this: If you’ve been flashing custom ROMs and messing with your device’s low-level software, it’s possible that you could have overwritten the stock recovery software. In this case, it’s possible that you have a software problem and not a hardware problem.)

Nairaland / General / [photos] 65-year-old Man Shocked To See His Own Obituary Posters In Benin by igetemi(m): 3:57pm On Aug 15, 2015

A 65-year-old man, Mr. Clifford Osawaru, may have gotten the shock of his life when he got calls from family and friends asking if he was actually dead after posters announcing his death and funeral arrangements were pasted on some streets in Okunmwun community, Ovia North East local government area of Edo State.

Osawaru, an hotelier, who was visibly shocked, said he was surprised that people could announce his obituary while he was still hale and hearty.

The father of 13 said he had been at loggerheads with some members of the community after he went to court to restrain them from engaging in unlawful sale of land without the consent of elders‎.

He therefore urged the police to unmask the culprits behind the act.

He said, “I was made the patron of the community by the Odionwerie and the elders. But some youths abandoned their jobs and focused their minds on selling land with fake paper in our community without the consent of the elders and myself.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Stephen Onwochei, who confirmed the incident, described it as a “case of threat to life” and said investigation would commence on the matter.
