Horse-trading, lingering crisis threaten convention, govs to meet Buhari, mull Feb 26

Power-play and lingering crisis are threatening plans by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to hold its national convention in February. Though the party has vowed to hold the convention on February 26 and 27, there are strong indications that it would not happen.

This is even as key presidential aspirants have intensified horse-trading and negotiations on how various positions would be zoned ahead of the primaries later in the year.

Already, Orji Uzor Kalu, David Umahi, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Moses Ayom have publicly declared their intentions to contest next year’s presidential election.

Daily Sun has, however, gathered from sources within the party that governors elected on the platform of APC were yet to take a common position before meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on his possible successor.

One of the sources said though governors have informally agreed to zone the position to the South, they are yet to take a position on a concensus candidate and other positions. He said three South West governors are opposed to plans by stakeholders of the party to settle for a concensus presidential candidate over fears that Tinubu could be left in the cold.

He revealed that besides Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi, other APC governors from North East, North West and North Central are unanimous in ceding power to the South. The source said Northern APC governors have also rejected plans to field a southern Muslim.

He said North West, in particular and North East, would insist on a Muslim vice president and a southern Christian president to balance Buhari’s eight years.

The top APC source said a Muslim-Muslim ticket being championed by some South West leaders would pose a threat to the success of the party in 2023. He said until the lingering issues are resolved during the planned meeting of APC governors and an expanded one with Buhari, a convention in February may not be feasible.

He said the only opposition to zoning of the president to the South, Governor Bello of Kogi State, may be appointed as the Director-General of the party’s presidential campaign organisation later in the year.

“Tinubu will be compelled to step down and support a candidate that will be chosen by stakeholders of the party. Tinubu may have no choice but to do that. That way, he will be seen as controlling the process. That’s what he wants.”

Meanwhile, some serving senators, governors and ministers have started lobbying for other top positions besides the office of the president in 2023.Some of the positions include the Secretary to Government of the Federation, senate president and vice president.

A minister from the South South, who doubles as former governor, is reportedly lobbying for the position of Secretary to Government of the Federation.The minister, it was gathered, had sought the blessing of President Buhari to contest for the position of the president but got a cold response.

On the other hand, chairman of APC caretaker committee and Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, is being touted to be the Muslim running mate to the eventual Christian candidate that would emerge from the South. Buni, the source said, enjoys wide support and has the backing of Northern establishment, including President Buhari, to clinch the top job.

Meanwhile, the coast seems clear for the party to endorse a consensus candidate for national chairman tomorrow after the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) meeting and with President Buhari.

On arrangements for the convention, our source said though the governors meeting would deliberate on every other thing, especially budget, logistics, venue, which may likely be a confirmation of Abuja and sub-committees, they would not discuss zoning. Our source hinged the resolution to play down the zoning of party’s positions on the confusing body language of President Buhari, stressing that the governors deliberately left it for him to decide.

“The governors will not deliberate zoning because they have to get a clear signal of who Mr. President is endorsing for some of the positions. It is however almost certain who will be the chairman because majority of the stakeholders, including the presidency, are favourably disposed for a North Central aspirant from the Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) stock as one of the legacy parties that has not produced the party chairmanship previously.

“We had little challenge because a chieftain the party assigned responsibility exploited the opportunity and has been informing people in most of the states he visited that he is going to run for the position. The development has compelled the presidency to reappraise their position on the chairmanship position.

“However, regardless of the recent development, I can tell you for sure that the consensus candidate for the position of chairmanship will emerge by Monday next week or latest Tuesday.”

On agenda of the governors’ meeting, the source said: “The volume of the budget for the convention and how they intend to raise the money will definitely top the agenda. Other items include the composition of sub-committees and other logistics.”

Only last week, Director General of APC PGF, had urged the Caretaker Committee Secretary and Chairman to resign should they fail to conduct the national convention in February.

•Group alleges plot to extend date beyond February

However, the APC Rebirth has raised the alarm of fresh plot by the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) to extend the date for the party’s National Convention beyond next month, February.

The group claimed that in furtherance of the agenda to continue the extension of its six months mandate, now running into 19 month, the Buni-led Caretaker Committee has come up with another plot to deceive party members and buy time in order to further propagate its selfish agenda.

APC Rebirth, in a statement by the coordinator, Aliyu Aud, said it had been reliably informed that the Caretaker Committee was behind various news report speculating the date for the convention.

It also warned that that any attempt by the Buni-led Caretaker Committee to move the convention any further under any guise will be resisted by all means possible.

“In any case, the purported February 25 date, just like many other decisions that have been taken by the Caretaker Committee, was not a collective decision by members of the Committee. This is the reason it opted to plant the date in the media rather than coming out with an official position. We wonder why other members of the CECPC have continued to tolerate the unilateral decision making and dictatorial excesses of the Chairman of the committee…

“With our established reputation for respecting laws and rules, the APC cannot continue to disregard a clear constitutional provision as regards the composition of the Caretaker Committee. It is therefore incumbent on all APC leaders, especially President Muhammadu Buhari, to prevail on all the governors in the party’s Caretaker Committee to resign forthwith, the group said.

Gunmen suspected to be militants of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) held the convoy of Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State hostage on Tuesday.

The incident happened as the attackers disrupted the campaign rally of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) at Odata Secondary School in Ihiala Local Government Area of the State.

“The governor’s convoy was held for about one hour, while there were gunshots all over,” a resident told Daily Trust.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that there was attack in Ihiala.

In a statement, Ikenga said operatives of Anambra Police Command repelled the attack at Odata.

According to him, exhibits recovered from the attackers were One AK 47 rifle, Two Magazine with 30 rounds of ammunition, One lexus 350 jeep, one Rav 4 jeep, one Mercedes Benz and a Toyota Corolla.

He said preliminary investigation revealed that the hoodlums started shooting sporadically when they arrived Odata Secondary School but security operatives took control.

He said that normalcy has been restored in the area and operations is ongoing for possible arrest of the fleeing gang members.

Reacting to the attack, the Anambra state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Mr. C.Don Adunuba, said a combined team of policemen and soldiers repelled the attack.

According to him, gunmen came on various motorcycles and in three vehicles, namely, a Toyota Lexus 350 ES with registration number EKY 765 EX, Toyota RAV4 with number JJJ 434FP and a Ford van whose number could not ascertained at the time of this report because it caught fire during the exchange of bullets between the gunmen and security forces.

​ He said the gunmen, unable to withstand the superior fire power of the security operatives ran into the premises of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, which is directly opposite the campaign ground.

“If the gunmen had not run into the hospital which is a very delicate place to shoot any person, the security men would have gunned all of them down them,” he said.

He said the Anambra State Police Command has requested the people in the area to help look out for people with gunshots and report them.

He also asked hospitals and other health facilities in both Ihiala Local Government Area and neighbouring communities in Imo State to report persons with gunshot injuries.

Meanwhile, Obiano has commended police officers and soldiers who repelled the attack.

Speaking to journalists at Atani in Ogbaru LGA where he led a large crowd of APGA faithful to welcome the APGA governorship candidate in the forthcoming election, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, Obiano described the response of the security men as professional and patriotic.

In the same vein, Soludo, who lost three policemen guarding him when he was attacked on March 31 in his hometown of Isuofia, Aguata local Government Area, while addressing the youth, lauded the security forces for bravery.

​“These security men and women in Anambra State lay down their lives for us and they do their best because of the encouragement they receive from the security-conscious state government, among other factors.”

“We expect more professional exhibition as days go by and the election date approaches.”

Governors of the 19 northern states have described as unconstitutional, the position of their Southern counterparts that the country’s next President must come from their region.

At a meeting in Lagos in July, Southern Governors had demanded that power must shift to their region.

However, arising from an emergency meeting with northern traditional rulers at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna, on Monday, the Northern Governors Forum said though some Northern States Governors had earlier expressed views for a power-shift to three Geo-Political Zone in the South, with a view to promoting unity and peace in the nation, the statement by the Southern Governors Forum that the Presidency must go to the South is unacceptable.

Reading from the resolutions of the meeting, Plateau State Governor and Chairman of the Forum, Simon Bako Lalong, said: “The statement is quite contradictory with the provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999) as amended that the elected President shall secure at least 25 percent of the votes cast in 2/3 states of the federation. In the case of run-up simple majority win the election.”

Ukrainian fighter, Oleksandr Usyk has insisted that there is nothing special about Anthony Joshua (AJ).

Oleksandr Usyk defeated Anthony Joshua 117-112, 116-112 and 115-113 in front of official attendance of 66, 267 in the Tottenham Stadium on Saturday night.

The Nigerian-born British boxer gave up his IBF, WBA and WBO belts as a result of the devastating defeat by Usyk who won by a unanimous decision.

Joshua quickly left the ring and headed straight to the hospital after the Ukrainian dealt heavy damage to his right eye as he could barely see.
Usyk is now the new world heavyweight champion and speaking about the match, the Ukrainian said, “The fight went the way I expected it to go. There were a couple of moments where Anthony Joshua pushed me hard, but just nothing special.”

Speaking further, he said, “This means a lot for me.

“I had no objective to knock him out because my corner pushed me not to do that. In the beginning, I tried to hit him hard, but then I stuck to my job.

“The only thing I wanted to do with this fight is to give praise to Jesus Christ.

“I have been working so hard since January in preparation for this fight, it took me half a year and I didn’t see my family for so long.

“I missed seeing them playing. I want to go home and be happy with my family and I’m not thinking about the rematch.”

The Chairman of the Southeast Governors Forum, David Umahi on Wednesday endorsed the former governor of Borno State Ali Modu Sheriff as the national chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC.

Umahi advocated that Sheriff be allowed to go in unopposed for the position of the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, adding that he is the only man that can be accessed at any time.

Umahi said this while addressing the former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and former two-time governor of Borno State, Sheriff who came for consultations in Ebonyi State.

He said, “One thing I know about this man (Ali Modu sheriff) is that he is accessible and very humble to the core. He is a good man, if I were the leader of the party (APC) I will just announce him unopposed. I want to assure you that my father, Mr President is the leader of the party (APC) has a great role to play.

“He is the only one that can take the decision but if it is thrown open to make our choice, he is my choice. If Mr President says, well for the interest of the party, we will always obey him.

“Our prayers are with you sir, and I want to assure you that I have no regret to say that Mr President is a man with a good heart. And it is for other leaders to have the same good heart, it is for other leaders to be patriotic and then the country will be a better place for all of us.

“If one has a good heart and others are not patriotic, no development can happen. No one man can achieve anything on his own, and so, I call for support for Mr President. And he (Buhari) is a man that is conscious of his integrity and no one can take it out from him.

“I have no regret or apology in saying that Mr President is a man with a good heart” he insisted.

Earlier in a remark, Sheriff, said he intends to unite the party if allowed to be the national chairman of APC.

“The only two strongest states in Southeastern Nigeria are APC states. With what I have seen, I can now tell people to visit Ebonyi State, this is because the governor (Umahi) have made APC governors proud” he said.

Nollywood Actress, Tonto Dikeh, has alleged that Prince Kpokpogri Joseph, her ex-lover, is threatening to release her nude pictures.

The actress, whose relationship with Kpokpogri, crashed last month, said this in a petition to the police.

She accused her ex-lover of blackmail, extortion, and obtaining by false pretence.

In the petition, which her legal team issued on her behalf, the actress said Kpokporgi has refused to return N2 million he collected from her.

She also claimed that one of her expensive vehicles is in his possession.

“From sometime in June 2021, one Prince Kpokpogri Joseph started to court our client with a proposal to marry her. In the process, he would invite our client to his residence and sometimes, he came over to our client’s residence.”

“Unknown to our client, the said Joseph Kpokpogri (who our client later discovered to be a serial blackmailer) had other motives for courting our client.

“Our client now has reasons and evidence to believe that Joseph Kpokpogri has planted closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV Cameras) at private areas of his residence, and had stage-managed those visits with the aim of blackmailing our client.

“She was surprised when sometime in August 2021, the suspect started demanding money from her and threatening to expose nude pictures and other such documents relating to her.

“To actualize his demands, the said Kpokpogri started sending messages, documents, and files containing sensitive information and materials relating to our client to her phone while also releasing some to the public. Our client believes that some of those information were obtained either by wire-tapping her phone and/or through such other means without her authorization.

“The said Kpokpogri equally obtained the sum of eight million naira (8,000,000) from our client under false pretenses. However, he has paid back the sum of six million naira (6,000,000) but has refused, failed, and/or neglected to pay the sum of two million naira (2,000,000) outstanding. Our client’s Toyota Hilux van (2021 Model) bought in her name is also in the custody of Kpokpogri which he has refused to return despite several demands.

“By reason of the above, we urge you to use your good offices to cause a detailed investigation into the above facts with a view to bring Joseph Kpokpogri to book.”

Their relationship turned sour after an anonymous blogger revealed Kpokpogri’s alleged infidelity.

Kpokpogri later released statements that implied that the actress was unfaithful as well.

He also leaked an audio where the actress was heard begging him over something that went wrong in the relationship.
