Nice economic postulation.......................

But can this work for a country that is 80% import dependent

What have we done in the past years for infrastructural development to enable local production of goods and services?

Organization producing here in Nigeria import their raw materials for production.......do u know what effect this will have on the price of commodity?

Is it until we start buying tin of peak milk for N250? cos it will still get there if care is not taken with the way we are going......................

Do u know DSTV just increased their subscription fee? Why?.............................They pay for licence in $ and collect Naira from us, this means that they are paying more now cos of our devalued naira.

The same thing will happen to multinational companies that buy raw materials abroad with dollars as means of exchange, cost of production will be high and this will affect price of goods and services.

Systematic depreciation of currency is good cos it will improve patronage of locally produced goods and services but not in a situation we find ourselves now which was due to lack of foresightness by our leaders.................

They thought the raining days will be forever, no adequate planning...........................................

Cant just stop thinking about what will happen if things continue like this.....................................................It will be disastrous
Nice observation but this is exactly where a smart central government comes into play to help these local manufacturers offset the currency plunge by eliminating import tariffs or creating favourable policies and strategic tax regimes pending when the raw materials can be sourced locally. The GEJ is already doing it with the automotive industry which i belong to.So please dont panic;this devaluation of the Naira coupled with the hightened investments in power generation/distributions is the best possible that can happen to Nigeria.Impatience and poor investment attitudes of those with the big bucks is why we are where we are.

OP, the question you should ask yourself is that ' is our production capacity as high as the chinese' do we have local products which can serve as substitutes? We don't produce electronics, ceramic tiles, phones, our food production can't meet our demand, even our crude is imported bck in it's refined form because we hv no functioning refineries. so how is the exchange rate a blessing since we hv to pay expensive dollars for all this trades.
You are underestimating the money in the hands of Nigerians and the fact that a capitalist driven economy isnt piloted by the government, niether does government sustain it on the long run. Op is right, the more essential commodities that can be sourced locally the more jobs we have in Nigeria.Imports will soon become less of essential commodities and majorly luxury products.
PoliticsRe: The Winning Formula By GMB For The Development Of Nigeria's Agricultural Sector by Immune1(m): 1:53pm On Mar 16, 2015
iHaveDecided:
Those who really care about the future of our dear nation will indeed be worried on our over-reliance on crude oil for our national earnings. It is really disappointing that a nation like ours which is blessed with so much land mass, fertile soil, favorable climate, absence of natural disasters and all whatnot has been unable to harness the opportunities in the agricultural sector.

The outgoing administration has said so much about the agricultural sector but not so much has been done. Those with a discerning mind will understand that it has been more talk and less work. The government of Muhammadu Buhari and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has promised to bring agriculture back to life. This will in turn help boost the economy through creation of jobs. The incoming government of GMB plans to:

• Modernize the agricultural sector by helping self-subsistence farmers to become medium/large scale farmers
• Pump in adequate funds to the sector so as to help create more agro allied jobs.
• Give out loans to farmers at nominal interest rates for capital investment on medium and commercial scale cash crops.
• Ensure farming becomes an all year round business through a well coordinated integrative irrigation of existing dams and the creation of more dams which will help collect and save over-flooding water nationwide.
• Make sure that our agricultural institutes which are currently in a state of comatose are revived.
• Have veterinary practices nationwide reviewed and then strengthened.
• Guarantee a minimum price for all cash crops and help build and improve storage facilities for agricultural products so that there will be no shortage of food crops all year round.

Enumerated above are some of the brilliant plans which will be executed to help resuscitate our dear agricultural sector which has been in dire need of an awakening. We cannot keep doing thing the same way and keep expecting different results.

CALL TO ACTION
1. Imagine what will become of our dear nation if our oil wells suddenly dry up and we have no contingency plans in place.
2. Take a moment to ponder on the innumerable opportunities which Nigerians will enjoy from a vibrant agricultural sector.
It’s time to stop complaining and grumbling. Rise up, pick your PVC and vote in the right team come March 28th, 2015. Change is inevitable this time around.
Which of these is GEJ not doing? You talk about loans on nominal interest rates when majority of these farmers are of the informal sector, hence unbanked. And for your information GEJ government has built more dams than any single government in the past and food cultivation during dry season has never been this good in Nigeria in a while now. Funny thing is i am more inclined to the auto-industry and i know this little; if a real agriculture specialist reads this your post, the reply will rip your post to shreds.

• Voting for Buhari is a blatant admission that for over 30years Nigeria hasn’t groomed or is incapable of grooming a leader capable of leading us in these modern democratic times.

• Some Yorubas/core South-Westerners in Nigeria are crying over about 5years of a ‘so-called’ non-inclusion in the GEJ government, but what about the South-South region whose oil contributes more than 80% of revenue(from oil) to the Federal government that have been alienated from power for over 40years!!! APC is playing the ethnicity card yet pretends this is a contest that is wholly about competence/integrity as opposed to religion/ethnicity which Nigeria has always been plagued with.

• The ex-military dictators are ganging-up due to common interest; OBJ wants to teach ‘a bloody civilian’ by the name GEJ a political lesson, while IBB is simply playing safe-like the maradona he will always be. In the midst of all these drama it’s unfortunate that seemingly clueless ‘bloody civilians’ are busy cheering on for change??!?!!Clearly we haven’t shaken-off the military dictatorship-inspired mental slavery-what a shame! We should at least burrow a leaf from Indonesia.

• 73 years old Buhari is simply power drunk with questionable integrity and little verifiable leadership traits; I guess this has something to do with the military genes of the old order. OBJ tried to extend his tenure, the same way Buhari forcefully truncated a new/struggling democracy. It’s very ironic that Buhari took up an office under a once junior officer’s government (Abacha) yet turned down chances to help the GEJ government curb Bokoharam in the nation’s interest.

• We are talking about austerity measures but our lawmakers (PDP/APC) are not even attempting to reduce their salaries/allowances; neither do they want to allow Local government autonomy (because they are mostly loyal to state governors or are nursing governorship ambitions). In the same manner they have been stalling the GEJ promoted Petroleum Industrial Bill. These are the people we should channel this new found change-aggression to instead of one man trying his best to make Nigeria work. I am not suggesting we go the Burkina-Faso way; but we sure can learn crucial lessons from these our African brothers/sisters.

• I can spill my guts now on Nairaland thanks to GEJ’s government truly liberal democratic rule. Whether you admit it or not he has been running a significantly more transparent government than any other government we have had; this has led to uncovering of a lot of lootings that have been perpetuated from way-back- in subsidy, pensions, government ministries etc. We know a lot of all these now because of the current government-not because Nigerians all of a sudden got better at stealing or being corrupt.

• Truthfully we have bigger problems in Nigeria where we have lots of Nigerians clamouring to give birth to their children in US or UK for easy access to these countries or other countries of the world when these children grow uphuh When this happens the folks that can truly pay for quality education and health transfer their monies to other economies-yet we still expect a miracle to happen 15years down the line in our Nigerian education and health sectorhuh

• Nigeria’s economy has been growing at a fair pace partly because of massive foreign direct investments (FDI) propelled by mostly Chinese, Indians and Lebanese- while truly wealthy Nigerians are busy buying flashy cars and building houses they don’t need.
Nigerians truly need to wake up!!!
I applaud GEJ’s approach in the power sector privatization by selling these companies to Nigerians who can decide to have foreign technical partners and still retain majority stakes in these critical investments in Nigeria.

• APC say that GEJ’s achievement in railway is insignificant yet Fashola broke the Lagos state bank to ensure the CMS-Badagry railway is functional- who is fooling who?

• With CNN’s validation of Nigeria’s projected economy growth more FDIs are coming and if you ask me, the plummeting Naira and increasing power sector investments is a perfect recipe for Nigeria’s economic boom. This is the time for Nigerians to step up and build up business value-chains less reliant on importation.

• Nigeria is on the rise and we need a truly progressive government; I am convinced for now GEJ is the better evil- better than an unclear change messiah.

Lol. I travel by road frequently enough to see the work being done. As they block off one part of the express for 'repairs' ALL the traffic has to use the other side of the road which does not exactly increase its lifespan? Get an engineer's perspective on the design/finishing of GEJ roads!!! The railway system will soon be privatized; what government is doing now 'in the road context' is building roads and running ABC transport and CHISCO..........its not sustainable on the long run. But nonetheless goods and humans are already being transported by rail; you can research further and find out the freight that leaves Apapa by rail and the people transported daily.

Even without local car assembly, the part manufacturers can grow by making parts for servicing/repairs of automobiles. parts manufacturers will thrive producing parts/spares for maintaining the millions of cars on our roads today. It's not compulsory you have a car manufacturing plant before you make tyres, brakepad, fan belt, battery or engine oil.
You have raised a very good point! But remember these parts are known as Aftermarket car products which ideally should make Original equipment manufacturers more competitive. If we ply solely that path we will be scaring away potential OEMs that may be willing to set up shops to support assembly or produxtion plants. The clear reason for this is if you allow aftermarket producers gain too much traction OEMs cannot really thrive.

Government is taking this path because we have local capacity/facilities on ground to manufacture;all that was needed is a demand for what they produce and this tariff raise is one way to draw the attention of u and i to the existence of local manufacturers. Just like in the area of power we have capacity on ground(billions of dollars invested years back) to sustain the national/centralized grid system and it is too late for anyone to be talking about decentralization of power generation. Our focus now should be how to speed up the implementation of the new gas master plan to ensure power stations get sufficient gas supplies. In my area gas pipes are being layed but omoniles are really frustrating the contractors......these are the realities;just like vandalization is an issue too.

Is that not what Osinbajo is saying also? Is it wrong to then direct that punitive import duty, which mainly punishes and disenfranchise ordinary Nigerians, should not be deemed a compulsory option for assisting the development of quality local vehicle production? Your adage about running before learning to crawl actually applies to the approach of the Nigerian Government in my opinion. Creating a local car manufacturing sector should not come at the expense of destroying choice and affordability for all tiers of Nigerian pockets. That approach won't work.
I strongly believe government is still testing the waters which i believe is the right thing to do........read what i replied a fellow nairalander......Passenger vehicles production is part of the plan but based on the investors preference so far and with the realities on ground; commercial vehicles production seems to be the most sustainable for now. Government has been buying time to study the investors that are willing to invest before they know the tariffs that will be raised. Based on the willing investors willing to build facilities i wont be surprised if government only raises tariffs for commercial vehicles.

Remember the tariffs are yet to be raised; but the waivers for CKD/SKD/DKD components importation is well in place to open up the industry.

You gets the 'trust' of what Osinbajo is saying. The simplistic point is that "what is worth doing is worth doing well". You cannot starve Nigerians of affordable vehicles, when doing such creates another set of problems altogether, all for the sake of protecting "local industries" that cannot operate and produce optimally.

It is for similarly reasons we import refined crude in the form of petrol. This is a measure that keeps Nigeria economically functional till Nigerian refineries can produce enough to satisfy domestic reply. It is for the government to do its job so that our refineries can work optimally same Government must produce the conducive environments and conditions that will facilitate the growth of a local vehicle industry instead of just punishing Nigerians with high tariffs while doing little to deliver this conducive environment. If posters put sentiments aside they will see that Osinbajo is not advocating a measure that will harm local car production. He is merely saying that for now, and while efforts is made to improve other important factor which will enable the delivery of a high quality local car manufacturing sector, Nigerians should not pay a punitive price, in the form of high duty, for car import.

In most Nations of the world, leaders must strike a balance between protecting local industry and depriving citizens quality/freedom of choice whcih helps them get the best out of the work/productivity and leisure equation. It is patently wrong to try and force Nigerians to patronise made in Nigeria vehicles if those vehicles cannot meritoriously compete with the best available !!! Osinbajo makes the distinct point that local vehicle production cannot be encouraged to the detriment of giving Nigerians greater choices , through importation, when some of the factors that prevents the local production of high quality cars are still glaringly missing.

It is clear Osinbajo takes a broad and long-term view to local production, not local assembly, of cars because that is the only way to look at things if we want uncompromising quality that will make 'Nigerian cars' as good as any other. He argues that while a holistic environment is being created to achieve this local production of high quality cars Nigerians should still have the option of importing cars at reasonable costs. This is a perfectly reasonable solution that takes into consideration the need to try and have balances which suit all sides rather than deploy drastic and ill-thought out ideas that benefit no side at all. The Government cannot just say it wants to help the development of local production of cars using punitive tariffs while major problems impeding the growth of the local car industry are not addressed adequately eg power supply. On this thread, many are taking the view that it must be one (import) or the other (local production) while Osinbajo , correctly in my opinion, is of the view this does not have to be the case. A balance can be achieved, till we reach our target, which allows as many Nigerians as possible to be on the road.
You cant run before learning to crawl; the difference between full scale manufacturing and vehicle assembly we have today is a more complex supply chain and OEM local presence. I never really believed in the feasibility of the new auto-policy until i took out time to attend forums where officials of NAC further educated us on certain aspects of the policy as a whole.
Heard of RMB?Wesbank is their subsidiary and they will roll out specialized loans/financing for customers willing to buy from our local manufacturers. And for your information 70% of the 33manufacturers already on ground are commercial/Utility vehicle producers; this means passenger vehicles are not the primary targets for the first phase of the policy implementation.

I am an business analyst in the automotive industry and i can assure you that the policy is very feasible if all the other pieces of the puzzle are fixed; thats the more reason Nigeria needs continuity and a stable political ambience.

2. There are moral lessons to be learned in GEJ's rise to political power, if you chose not to learn anything from it, then you're on your own.
3. She is successful because she is the wife of the president. Is Michelle Obama successful?
4. He is a leader, I doubt if you also know what the term leader means
5. Is GEJ impatient?

3)The approach of most of his policies tell a lot about him being a patient person; he has the liberty to do a few flashy projects that won't necessarily have lasting effects, but rather he will stick with the pain-staking reforming approach and tackling the root causes of Nigeria's problem instead of fixing mere symptoms

4)Social media is just a platform of expression, and like i stated it 'amplified' our views;its either you are being naive or you don't have a sense of history if you strongly feel the social media revolution led to the freedom of speech we enjoy today in Nigeria
