chelseaguy: Op, I applaud you for creating this thread. However, I think some of your achievements for the year are exaggerated. How can you achieve 80+ % in French in just a year? It can only be achieved with total immersion, and you live Nigeria. What you stated is a native level proficiency.

No, I didn't exaggerate. I started learning French in Port Harcourt in January and den Lagos before leaving for Benin Republic in April for the next phase, then finally spent 3 weeks in France on scholarship for coming out in the top 3 in my french school.

I agree with the last paragraph because we a kind of tend to create our own luck too. But I think the axiom that no knowledge is a waste is a conventional wisdom whose relevance is now spent. Or of what use will sewing skills be for meif I were a lawyer.
There is tendency that I may find that knowledge handy once in a blue moon but does it worth it after all? How many times will get to use it? Wouldn't it be more politic to use the time and resources and gain other relevant skills?

I have a lawyer friend who owns a COUTURE in Abuja and Port Harcourt because of her passion for sewing and she's doing absolutely well.

Dammyoni18: What are the career opportunities for a graduate of International Relations?

Although, what comes to mind first is a career as an Ambassador, minus that please, suggestions needed.

There are so many options. Embassy, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Consulting Firm, University{Lecturer}, Multi-national agencies and companies as their International Relations Director or Personnel, also agencies like the United Nations, Unesco, Unicef, World Bank etc.

International Relations is a very viable career course with incredible opportunities.

The only prequisite to a successful career in this course is you being extremely good in what you do. Be a good communicator and constantly work on your inter-personal skills, learn and master other languages and cultures and be a good traveller. Then even the sky won't be your limit.

All the best.

Contumely: @OP. You have succeeded in wasting precious time on balderdash and baloney that you erroneously term skill acquisition.
The axiom that no knowledge is a waste is misleading. I learnt Pitman Shorthand while in high school and was unarguably the best student of it in our set. But I have never had cause to use that knowledge. So many other cases abound.
=

You are a lawyer and you learnt programming too, the possibility of your using that knowledge is minute.
=
I disagree on the jimoh Ibrahim et al example too, what determines success in life is not just hardwork and talent alone. A lot is owed to luck and serendipity too.

Osita Chidoka became the head of Road Safety simply because of sheer luck and adventitiousness.

I'm very much using my programming and networking skill because I own a Public Relations {PR}/media firm which absolutely needs them on a daily basis.

Short hand is very productive if you find yourself in the right place. As a human capital/Resource consultant and career coach I've had proposals from multinational companies and agencies whereby one of the most outstanding requirements they need from applicants especially to fill in commercial portfolios is a formidable knowledge in shorthand. So my dear, no knowledge is a waste. I know of so many doctors who are also experts in ICT. As a lawyer, I have a poultry farm and fish ponds, a skill I acquired in my university days.

Moreover, I agree with you that we need luck to succeed. But any man who sits at home, folds his hands and wait for luck to knock at his door is a multinational fool and will die a failure.

I have an uncle, who is a lawyer. Early this year he decided to learn tailor and shoe maker, honestly it was very funny when he told us his mind, we all took it as a joke, but today as am talking to you, he has finished learning the 2 skill. Last month he rented a shop at Ikeja where he wants to open a boutique, he said the skill he acquired this year was what gave him the confidence to open a business.

I also have a friend who is a Factory Worker, and a part-student of O.O.U. Studying Business Admin. Last year he spared some of his time to learn GSM Engineer, he use to go to ikeja from ketu to go and learn how to repair phones. whenever he's on night duty, cos the factory where he works do observe shifting, that is, one week morning duty, one week night. whenever he's on night duty he will go and learn how to repair phones. Today he has stopped working in the factory, he now has a shop, he collect phones from all corners everyday, both from school mates, fellow factory workers and new people also, he now has time for his studies too.

It is Good to acquire a skill no matter your qualification.

THERE IS NO KNOWLEDGE THAT IS NOT POWER.

There are reputable project management firms in Lagos. I know of Strides Consults at Lekki and JK Michaels Project Management. These are one of the best in Lagos where you can get quality and viable PM training. Goodluck in your new business. Remember, business is not all about money, but all about people. Career / How Many Skills Did You Acquire This Year? by infinity001(m): 7:31am On Dec 11, 2013
Let's talk about SKILLS.

So often in this country we underestimate the importance of skills and it's so sad.
We give so much value to career which is sporadically becoming unhealthy to long time productivity and financial independence.

Many of us are satisfied with our education{what we read in school} and we don't care to go to the next step.

This next step is ACQUIRING SKILLS.

As a lawyer and motivational speaker/consultant, I find it absolutely imperative to procure relevant skills even outside of the domain of my profession and calling.

Do you want a long term level of personal productivity{effectiveness and efficiency}? Then it doesn't matter what you read in school, where you work presently or the business you run... You must FORTIFY yourself with SKILLS.

Listen, no man has ever become a billionaire with the salary from his boss.... Prove me wrong.

look around you, the Jimoh Ibrahim, Mike Adenuga, Aliko Dangote, Oba Otudeko, just to mention a few. Have you ever paused to ask yourself how they got elevated to where they are today? Yes I have. They went the extra mile, recognized their dominant gifts in them, and added excellence to what they do.

So many of us are multi-talented yet we wonder why we are not making it in life. We wonder why we are not going forward in our chosen career... I have the answer to that. We've refused to go the extra step.

I made a commitment at the start of the year to do everything necessary to grow as a legal practitioner, speaker, trainer and consultant. Growing is a choice and it takes diligence, character and efficiency to achieve maximum growth. Remember, progress is not you being better than others, it's you being better than your yesterday. Learning and Maximizing your skills gives you personal satisfaction which is a sign of progress.

Some of the major skills I acquired this year.
1. 85% proficiency in French. I realized that as a speaker who aspires to reach the whole world with my messages, I must take the time out of my busy schedule to learn new languages and cultures and I had to start with French. I can't describe how excited I am that I can speak and write in french fluently... A subject I so much detested in secondary school but I realized that it was absolutely relevant to my personal development. My fluency in French, opened uncommon doors for me to France for the first time. Next in line is Portuguese {2014}

2. Entrepreneurship
Even as a lawyer, I believe that entrepreneurship is one of the keys to financial independence. In as much as I speak on Entrepreneurship, I realized that I must also act it. The desire to acquire viable and formidable knowledge on entrepreneurship took me to conferences and Seminars where I paid a fortune to learn from worldclass guest speakers like Brian Tracy and Zig Ziglar. Remember, to learn or develop a skill, you must be ready to sacrifice your time, energy and resources. Today, I'm making far beyond what I paid to develop my entrepreneurial skill... On a daily basis.

3.Project Management Skills and Trainings - This opened doors for me to South Africa, Ghana and Kenya.

4. Information and Communication Technology {ICT} - Development of my programming and networking skills.

Let me stop here. Now let's talk about the skills you acquired this year...

Remember, There Is No Knowledge That Is Not Power.

Let me speak to somebody today who is going though a downward slide in life, who is sitting down right there, dejected, rejected, wondering and contemplating on giving up. Listen my friend; are you almost giving up on your education? Are you almost giving up on your children, your family, and your marriage or even on your dreams and aspirations and on the possibility of having a child? Are you at a point in your life where you feel you are alone and deserted? Are you wondering if you are such a worthless person in this world? Do you believe that liar telling you in your spirit that you are a failure? But I came to give you good news, DON'T GIVE UP, DON'T YOU EVER GIVE UP... YOU HAVE THE CAPABILITY IN YOU! You are not finished when you are defeated, you are finished when you quit. The most important things in this world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all. God did not promise us a safe journey, he promised us a safe landing. No matter how strong the storm may be, he will land you safely home.
JOHN STEPHEN AKWANI, was the world marathon champion, Olympic Champion and African Champion. He was a very respected and honourable athlete having won the respect and admiration of the world. But he became a world beater in the 1976 Olympic Marathon and that event changed his life forever. When the race started, John Stephen Akwani was at the forefront leading the race, he was far ahead of the other 35 runners. He was running with tremendous stride and an unmatched dynamism, enjoying the race with passion and splendour and with only one thing on his mind; the Gold medal.
Suddenly, he felt a very sharp and terrible pain in his knee joint and he fell down awkwardly and broke his head and right hand. While he was on the ground wailing in enormous pain, all the runners behind him overtook him. The medics came to him and discovered that he'd fractured his right hand and his head was bleeding profusely. He was advised to get into the ambulance so he could be taken to the hospital, but he turned them down. After 30 minutes, He rose up, dusted his body and kept running... Limping and staggering... the rest of the runners were out of sight yet he kept going, all the spectators were screaming and shouting 'John... You need to stop, you need to quit... You are bleeding and your body is covered in blood, you might lost your life... Please stop, we will understand why you failed, we will understand why you quit, it wasn't your fault... After all you WERE the champion'. But John Stephen Akwani refused to quit... He staggered, staggered, staggered, yet he kept going, he fell down over and over again, yet he got back up, again and again. People kept pleading with him to quit or else he would lost his life, but he kept going. One hour after the end of the race, he was still going. The winner of the race had already been awarded with the gold medal, yet John Stephen Akwani kept going. After 2 hours, yes 2 hours after the end of the race, John crossed the finishing line. He was filled with smiles and joy, he was celebrating as if he won the race. He lifted up the Zimbabwean flag up high and showed it to the world with pride. He got a new vigor, a new found strength and people were absolutely astonished and amazed why the last man in the race would be celebrating more than the winner of the race. Hundreds of journalists immediately gathered around him out of enormous curiosity and asked him 'John, why did you keep going even when you fell, broke your head and your right hand, why didn't you stop when your life was in grave danger, why did you insist on going ahead even when it was worthless? John looked at them, with tears of joy flowing from his eyes and said 'The Government of Zimbabwe didn't send me to this Olympics to start the race; they sent me to FINISH it.'
Oh my friend, why are you stopping before your finish line? I know you have 200 reasons in your heart why you want to quit... but I have 2000 reasons to give to you why you shouldn't quit. I know people will understand why you quit, they will understand why you failed. They will understand that you tried all you could, but the same people will celebrate you when you finally overcome. You need to be celebrated, you are born a winner, so don’t live and die a loser. Wherever you are right now, lift up your hand and tell yourself... I REFUSE TO QUIT, I HAVE ALL IT TAKES TO GET TO THE TOP. I WILL MAKE IT. Yes my friend, I have tremendous belief in you... You will make it. Don't stop before your finishing line.
There is Greatness within you.
The top is where you belong.
I'll see you there.
God bless you.
Nairaland / General / The Story Of The Butterfly by infinity001(m): 9:20am On Jul 02, 2013
I want to share this story with you AGAIN.. There is a tremendous lesson to learn from this butterfly.

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further. So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly. What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were Life's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. Remember nature needs no help, just no interference. There are processes of life, things we all go through. The struggles are a part of our journey and are preparing us for what awaits. They are preparing us to fly. So no matter what you are going through right now, do not faint, do not despair, for it's meant to make you stronger. It's giving you wings to FLY. I assure you, you will come out, stronger, fitter and better. Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better for change.

God bless you.
THE TOP IS WHERE YOU BELONG.
I'LL SEE YOU THERE.

Nairaland / General / Are You Progressing In Life? by infinity001(m): 12:31am On Jul 02, 2013
WHAT IS PROGRESS?
“I don't think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday...'' Ibrahim Lincoln.

Progress in life is not you being better than anyone else, progress is you being better than your previous self (your yesterday). Are you progressing? life is not a competition, it's all about proving yourself to yourself... Proving that you can conquer your obstacles, that you can excel beyond your background, that you can break limitaions and fulfill your divine destiny. You need to surprise yourself and stop comparing yourself to others. You don't know how strong you are until being strong is the only option you have. our background may be responsible for who you are, but you are responsible for where you will end up. One thing the devil does so well is that he closes our eyes from the things we have, the numerous potential we are endowed with and make us feel bitter, ashamed and disappointed for the things we don't have.

Listen my friends, happiness will never come to those who don't appreciate what they already have. Success is not the elimination of our weaknesses, it is the development of our strength. Focus on building your strength and not how to eliminate your weaknesses. Let your strength overshadow your weaknesses.

Where will you be in the next 5 years? Why don't you take some time to ponder. I wish to see u a better, stronger and successful person.

The capability is in you.
The top is where you belong.
God bless you.
