Well, in the last few years, the prophet has become notorious for prophecies related to politicians or football (what Americans call “soccer”). The internet is awash with news items claiming that “sources” have told them that the prophet has predicted the death of a president or the final score sheet of a pending football match. Hence, in the streets of Africa, TB Joshua has become the latest wonder-boy. Everyone is talking about him.

For instance, “sources” said that TB Joshua predicted that the Zambian national football team would lift the prestigious AFCON Cup early this year. In fact, the “sources” also said he predicted Didier Drogba’s heart-rending penalty miss—which could have buried the hopes of the entire nation of Zambia. So, even if you did not know TB Joshua prior to Zambia’s recent win, his name was added to our staple diet from that point onwards.

Being a pastor in Africa, I have been asked again and again by people in the streets what I make of all this. Thankfully, my own church members know better. However, I engage in a lot of one-on-one and door-to-door evangelism, and this is one of those questions I get asked very often. It is obvious that TB Joshua and his predictions are on the minds of many Zambians (and Africans). Let me make just two comments about all this.

Unverified Claims

The first comment I want to make is that many of the stories doing their rounds about TB Joshua’s feats amount to fictitious stories that are unverified. They get passed on from one hearer to another and grow larger and larger until they become “real”. They can best be included in the folklores that made up so much of African traditional stories, like the stories of the beautiful women that once used to walk dry out of the river at full moon to mesmerise village men and disappear back into the water!

It is the same with the prophecy of Chelsea winning the Champions League Cup. I have searched the Internet looking for a clip where TB Joshua is saying in clear words that Chelsea would win the Cup but all I have found are statements that “sources” have said it. Here is a man who runs a TV network for 24 hours a day, and yet the one piece of information that is the hype of today cannot be found! In fact, what I seem to find are statements made just before the match claiming that he did not say anything of the kind. Perhaps someone can send me a YouTube link where he said it—and said it clearly.

I am reminded of the many claims to healings that are made by “anointed” Charismatic preachers. Every week, there are tens of thousands of miracle services conducted across the country and the continent. When I say that these are just publicity and fundraising gimmicks, sincere Christians are often horrified at my saying so. When I then ask them to give me the name and address of one person whom they know who was once blind but now sees, or was a cripple (on a wheelchair or on crutches) who now walks, or was deaf and dumb but now speaks, they suddenly sober up and admit that they do not know anyone. “Sources” have told them of many people who have been healed.

I once participated in a live radio programme on the subject of miraculous healing. There were two other participants—a Roman Catholic Priest and a Charismatic pastor. I made it clear that the claims being made by “anointed” Charismatic preachers were false. The Roman Catholic priest was neither here nor there, but the Charismatic pastor insisted that these miracles were happening everywhere everyday. He even lost his temper over my claims. The Theatre Command of Operation Lafiya Dole of the Nigerian Army has raised the alarm that Boko Haram insurgents are planning to execute bomb attacks in Borno using beggars among other strategies.

Five vehicles, three shops and one house in Ojuelegba, Lagos were burnt on Saturday after a tanker containing 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol, spilled and caught fire.

The sleepy town of Ogotu-Ekiti in Ekiti SouthWest Local Government Area was on Tuesday thrown into confusion when information filtered that a goat had delivered a human-like baby goat.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident, which occurred in Lori Oke settlement, a village that is about 10 kilometres from Ogotun town, drew the attention of hundreds of residents and travellers.

The spokesman of the community, Sunday Ogunmeji, who spoke with NAN correspondent on behalf of the Baale (community head), Ganiyu Adetoun, said a pastor, Mr Daniel Odedele, helped to deliver the goat of the baby.

“After watching the goat labour for several hours, the pastor took pity on it and courageously pulled the baby out, only for it to turn out to be human-like.

“The `baby’ had all the features of a human being such as human face, head, hair, female genitals, two legs and two arms with hoofs.

“However, the human-like baby died at about noon as a result of lack of care as the crowd merely trooped there to watch rather than to attempt to save its life,’’ Ogunmeji said.

A resident, Mr Saidi Oladepo, who is a commercial motorcycle (Okada) operator, told NAN that immediately the goat delivered the `human-like baby’, it took to its heels.

He said that as soon as members of the community got wind of the incident, they ran helter-skelter in apparent confusion.

He said alarm was raised and the local security agents, referred to as `Peace Corps’, were alerted to the incident.

Oladepo added that it took more than two hours to re-capture the goat in the bush.

A pan-Igbo group, The Igbo Conscience, says some former political office holders who served in the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan were behind the Biafran revolt.
The TIC said this was why the protests gained momentum immediately after Jonathan was defeated at the poll.

The leader of the group, Mr. Monday Ubani, who is a former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja branch, said this at a news conference in Lagos on Wednesday.

He, however, added that the appointments did not improve the standard of living of the people of the South-East.

He said, “As recently as six months ago, the Igbo occupied and boasted of occupying prime positions in the country during the six years of President Jonathan’s rule. Why is it that immediately after the defeat of the past regime in March, the cries of Igbo marginalisation rose to high heavens with slanderous allegations against the President-elect?

“What were the merits the Ndigbo derived from this much-vaunted strategic placing in critical positions for six years? Should the Igbo be crying of marginalisation just a few months after sitting on the upper echelons of the country’s political and economic spheres if these political beneficiaries benefitted the Ndigbo with their positions?

“Should roads and other facilities in the South-East be as dilapidated as they are today if we benefitted from these former office holders, some of whom are sponsoring the present agitations?”

Ubani said many Igbo youths had been brainwashed into believing that secession was the only way to address national problems.

The Senate on Wednesday, approved the $200 million loan request for the Lagos State government, following deliberation of the report of Ad-hoc Committee on Foreign and Local debt to which the request was referred a fortnight ago.

Senator Kabiru Gaya (APC Kano South), in a motion for the consideration of the report, said: “That the Senate do consider the Report of Ad-Commiittee on Local and Foreign Debts for Special approval of Lagos State Development Policy Operation (DPO) loan budget support of US$200 Million from the World Bank.”


Supported by Senator Remi Tinubu (APC Lagos), Gaya explained that the loan would go a long way developing the state’s infrastructure and in generating jobs for the teeming unemployed in Lagos State.

In his contribution, Senator Danjuma Goje, however warned that the loan should not be taken just for the sake of it, but should be expended judiciously and purposefully so that when it was being paid back people could point to the infrastructures it was used for.

“Mr Senate President, my own is to express caution. Loans are meant to be paid back with interest and so it should be judiciously used to the extent that the people of Lagos State could point to those things it was used for,” he noted.

ABUJA— Petroleum Tanker Drivers, PTD, branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the abandoned N14.58 billion contract for the rehabilitation of Ilorin-Jebba-Mokwa-Birnin-Gwari-Kaduna road.

National Chairman of PTD, Salimon Akanni Oladiti, who made the call while speaking with journalists in Abuja, regretted that members had suffered untold hardship on account of the deplorable state of the highway, which had become a source of agony and death trap for motorists and other road users. The immediate past administration of President Goodluck Jonathan approved the contract for the rehabilitation of the highway project in November 2013 to the tune of N14.58 billion.

The then Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, told journalists after the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan that the FEC approved N42 billion contracts for the rehabilitation of roads across different states of the federation.

Onolememen explained that, “council also approved contract No. 6210 for the rehabilitation of Ilorin-Jebba-Mokwa-Birnin-Gwari-Kaduna road section 1 in the sum of N14.58 billion.”

Other rehabilitation projects awarded under this category include the Ilorin-Omuaran-Kabba road in Kwara and Kogi states was awarded for N8.2billion, the other is the Ilorin- Jebba, 93.6KM long single carriage way) in Kwara State for N14, 587,233, 292.17 with completion period of 24 months among others.

But worried that the road project had been abandoned, PTD said the sorry state of Jebba-Mokwa section of the highway was terrible and had become nightmare to thetanker drivers and therefore asking “this present government to investigate that and do justice to it.”

According to Olatidi, “The challenges of our members, if not because we believe in this government, we just want to wait and see what they can do. Tanker drivers across the country are suffering. Look at Ilorin-Oloru-Jebba road, a distance of less than 60kms; it took a tanker to cross from Ilorin to Jebba 5, 6, 7days, it is a pity. And I was very wondering when I heard that that road was awarded to contractors in 2013. That is in the northern part of the country that is very critical. We have challenges between Onitsha-Owerri-Aba road, in fact, all those areas are death trap. In Calabar, before you enter Calabar Township, there is a death trap there now.
