Politics › UNICAL Prof In Montreal For Biodiversity Talks At COP 15 by InforEduNG(op): 8:54am On Dec 06, 2022 |
One of the most important events for life on Earth, ever, is about to begin. This week and next, delegates from more than 190 countries will come together in Montreal, Canada, for a conference known as COP15, or the UN Biodiversity Conference, to hash out a plan to halt the decline of ecosystems, wildlife, and the life-supporting services they provide. Professor Aniebiet Inyang Ntui from the University of Calabar is participating in the crucial summit as a Member of the United Nations’ Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Women Caucus. This was made known to the public during one of the Working Group Meetings ahead of the Conference of Parties which is due to begin on the 7th of December and conclude on the 19th.
The CBD Women’s Caucus is an organized network with around 300-500 organizations from all over the world that continuously provides input into the global policy processes of the CBD and other biodiversity-related international negotiations. The group has the objective to bring to attention women’s human rights and working towards strengthening the gender-responsive actions to biodiversity conservation and sustainable use in the policy framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), including strengthening the voices of women that are grounded in the local and national realities through advocacy, policy and capacity building.
If the term “COP” sounds familiar, that’s because there was another UN conference last month called COP27. But these two events are very different. COP27 was about climate change — a conference of countries “party” to the UN’s major climate pact. COP15 will bring together nations party to another major treaty called the Convention on Biological Diversity.
“Our planet is in crisis,” Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, executive secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, said in a press conference earlier this month. More than a million species are threatened with extinction, she said, and populations of most major animal groups have declined by an average of 69 percent. “Clearly, the world is crying out for change,” she said.
During COP15, which starts on Wednesday, the 2022 UK Global Prize Winner will join other negotiators to finalize and sign a document called the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, the equivalent for the Paris Climate Agreement but for biodiversity — a strategy with nearly two dozen measurable targets designed to conserve ecosystems and the benefits they provide, such as food and plant-derived medicines.
Professor Aniebiet Inyang Ntui is the Most Read Researcher in Nigeria, a Nobel Prize Nominee and the University Librarian of the University of Calabar. She lead deliberations during the Edu-Tech segments of the 27th Conference of Parties (COP) on Climate Change in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, and the Climate Change Discussions at the G20 Meeting in Bali, Indonesia. https://www.opinionnigeria.com/unical-prof-in-montreal-for-biodiversity-talks-at-cop-15/

Politics › Strike Turns UNICAL Lecturers To Bolt Drivers by InforEduNG(op): 1:16pm On Sep 07, 2022 |
As with many of his coworkers, a senior lecturer at the University of Calabar who is impacted by the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike has taken up taxi driving.
Negotiations between the Federal Government and the ASUU have often come to a standstill since the strike began in February 2022.
The senior educator claimed that in order to get by during difficult times, provide for his family, and fulfill other duties, he had to turn to driving Bolt cabs. He is the head of a renowned department at the University of Calabar, but he does not want his identity shared.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Florence Bank Obi, returned from a personal vacation in Chicago, United States, just two days prior to this. Earlier on Tuesday in Abuja, Professor Obi attended a meeting with vice chancellors and provosts to discuss the ASUU strike.
Dr. Anthony Bissong Attah, a former lecturer and president of the UNICAL Post Graduate Students Association, was surprised to see him yesterday when he summoned a Bolt cab to pick him up for a trip.
“Today was a really emotional day for me. To get to an engagement in Calabar this morning, I hired a Bolt cab. The cab driver told me I looked like one of his university colleagues when he came to pick me up.”
“I am familiar with many UNICAL lecturers. Many of my friends and acquaintances from the University were mentioned by this Bolt driver.
The idea that a university don may unwittingly end up working as a cab driver makes me cringe. This is not meant to imply that it is improper for a lecturer to also serve as a chauffeur. Not at all, no. However, I’m worried that a preventable circumstance has forced these instructors into a hastily devised alternate source of income.
“This is really disheartening and irritating. Is it not important for civil and public workers to have several sources of income? That is a topic for a different conversation.
"The overall theme of this discussion is the need to support all of our colleagues in the academic community who are participating in the ongoing university strike. They are enduring extremely unusual economic difficulties.”
The lecturer-turned-driver bemoaned and deeply regretted how he passed up the opportunity to accept a lecturing job in Finland like several of his colleagues, according to Attah, chairman of the Young Progressives Party and recently elected State chairman of IPAC.
This incidence is not unique. On Twitter, netizens have been sharing tales of encountering UNICAL Professors working as cab drivers all throughout state. https://dailypost.ng/2022/09/06/prolonged-ASUU-strike-forces-unical-lecturer-into-driving-cab/?amp=1https://www.opinionnigeria.com/strike-turns-unical-lecturers-to-bolt-drivers/
