Olawale Jokotoye/Abeokuta As congratulatory messages poured in for President Muhammadu Buhari over his re-election, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has kept disquietingly mum. Telephone calls made to Obasanjo’s Media Aide, Mr Kehinde Akinyemi, by the correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) were not picked while text messages sent to him for Obasanjo’s reaction were neither acknowledged nor replied. Obasanjo slumped into ‘quiet mode’ since February 23, after voting in Abeokuta and advising winners in the election to show magnanimity in victory, saying losers should also accept defeat. “In any competition, there will always be winners and losers. That is what anybody in any competition must be prepared for as a good sportsman. Whoever that wins should show magnanimity. If I lose, I will also bow down graciously. That is what any competition is all about. “If your purpose of going for any competition is that you must win at all costs, then that is no longer a competition. I know INEC will make amends for the shortcomings ahead of the next elections.” After failing to deliver his polling unit in Abeokuta to Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party that he staked so much upon, including risking God’s wrath, Obasanjo has not been since in public. He had hoped his endorsement would enable Atiku defeat Buhari. He also tried to create a third force and a coalition of groups to dethrone Buhari, but none showed any promised until he embraced Atiku. The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, in the early hours of Wednesday declared Buhari winner of the Saturday’s presidential polls. He polled 15,191,847 votes to defeat Atiku, his closest rival who scored 11,262,978 votes. Prominent and well-meaning Nigerians as well as international leaders have since been congratulating Buhari over his victory in the election, widely adjudged as peaceful and credible. But former President Obasanjo, who believes he could swing election to any aspirant has noticeably kept off the public radar, holed in his expansive home on the hilltop in Abeokuta, the Ogun capital. Obasanjo, was quite vocal in the build-up to the election and campaigned against Buhari’s re-election with a series of caustic and malicious letters. Then in an amazing and absurd turn, he endorsed Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the PDP, whom he had once accused and condemned over corruption claims. He had told Nigerians that God would not forgive him (Obasanjo) if he ever supported Atiku to be president. But for all Obasanjo’s vitriol against Buhari, the presidency repeatedly asked Nigerians to ignore Obasanjo, saying Buhari’s performance in office would earn him re-election.(NAN) Source: http://www.insiderpostonline.com/news/after-failing-to-deliver-poling-unit-obasanjo-slumps-into-quiet-mode/

Chris Smith , a ranking member of the House Subcommittee on Africa, has alleged that votes are being tampered with in the ongoing Nigerian elections. In a message posted on the US house website, Chris Smith is quoted thus” “Yesterday, Nigeria voted. Today, votes are being counted. I am very concerned by credible reports that the vote is being tampered with. To avoid any manipulation of the tally, it is critical that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announce without delay actual results — which are certified by party agents and observers — at each polling unit as the vote is tabulated. “Well-placed sources report that in some states and localities — including Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, Abia — INEC commissioners are receiving enormous pressure to alter poll results. This must not be allowed to happen. “The eyes of the United States, of Africa, and the world are upon Nigeria and INEC. I also ask Secretary Michael Pompeo to hold accountable anyone who seeks to cheat the Nigerian people — who have waited patiently — of their vote or foments violence.” Nigerians voted, with minor glitches, on Saturday for presidential and National Assembly positions in the 36 states of the country. The country’s electoral body, INEC has announced that the announcement of results will commerce 11 am on Monday. Sporadic violence were reported in some parts of the country mostly in the South South, South West and North central regions. Yemi Adeleye Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC ) have surfaced at the Lagos State Collation Centre for the Presidential Election, situated at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters office, Yaba. The 10 officials entered INEC premises before 10:00pm on Saturday night and sat under the canopy erected for the collation of Presidential results across the 20 local government areas of the state. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the operatives, who were wearing their aprons with EFCC inscriptions sat quietly awaiting the commencement of the final collation exercise in the state. The operatives were seated and fully at alert at the collation centre. Their mission was not clear. Speaking to NAN, a staff of the commission, who preferred anonymity, said that in his many years of service in the commission, the operatives of EFCC had never participated in elections’ result collation. Another official of the commission, who would not want his name mentioned in print suggested that the operatives were on ground to tackle the menace of vote selling and buying. Meanwhile, collations of the Presidential and National Assembly elections are ongoing in many centres and no results from any local government areas of the state has reached the final state collation centre in INEC office. However, the venue was scanty as at 12:00 midnight with some journalists and many security agents going in and out of the premises. The final collation for the Presidential elections in the state may be delayed till Sunday morning. NAN reports that many Registration Area Collation Officers in the Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency collation centre situated at St. Agnes Primary School, Birrel in Yaba, next fence to INEC office, were still busy with the exercise. Florence Onuegbu The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) said on Friday that it might close Ladipo Market in Mushin, till further notice, if the waste situation continued unabated. LAWMA’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Obinna Onyenali, said that the attention of the authority had been drawn to the unwholesome environmental practices being carried out by traders at the Ladipo Market. Onyenali said that such practices had resulted to indiscriminate dumping of waste and degradation of the environment. He said that the authority had, in recent times, doubled its efforts to ensure that business transactions in all Lagos markets were conducted in a clean and safe environment. According to him, the authority has doubled its efforts through timely deployment of trucks for waste evacuation and sweeping of the markets. “However, these efforts are being tainted by the activities of mischievous persons who would rather dump their waste indiscriminately on the roads than patronise their assigned Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators. “LAWMA condemns in strongest terms this unwholesome act, being perpetuated by the traders of Ladipo Market, as it exposes the environment and the people that do business there to various health dangers. “The authority seizes this opportunity to urge the merchants at the market to turn a new leaf or face the consequences of the Law. “If these heinous acts against the environment continue unabated, the market will be shut till further notice,” he said in a statement. Onyenali said that LAWMA wanted all markets to comply with the Environmental Laws of the state, which was essential for building a cleaner and healthier environment that everyone would be proud of. “The Authority appeals to all residents in the state to always imbibe the habit of effective waste management by bagging their waste for easy evacuation by their assigned PSPs,” he said.(NAN) Source: http://www.insiderpostonline.com/news/lagos-govt-threatens-to-shut-ladipo-market/

Prudence Arobani The re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari got a boost on Monday when Mr Olujonwo Obasanjo, son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, stormed the United States to galvanise Nigerians to support Buhari for the Feb. 16 presidential election. Obasanjo, who is the President, The Buhari Youth Organisation (BYO), said he was in the United States to solicit support for Buhari’s re-election among Nigerian in the diaspora and other members of the international community. He explained that his support for the re-election of the president was due to his focus on youth empowerment and securing the future of the country for the Nigerian youth. Obasanjo said while in the United States, he participated in several activities aimed to project the positive image of the administration and Nigeria to the international community. “I participated at the United Nations International Day for Education, promoted by the Nigerian Permanent Mission to the United Nations and the Nigerian Government. “Education is one of the tenets of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, focusing on youth empowerment, youth participation and securing a better future for our generation and the generations to come. “I also participated at the Nigerian American Business Forum where I met with many Nigerian professionals and their American counterparts. I went to Atlanta to visit our sister organisations there and to inaugurate many of our organisations. “I also went to Detroit where we inaugurated some of the organisations. We also have many Buhari support organisations in New York as well. “We have Buharists in the United States and all over the world. So I am here to encourage them and to support them in every way we can,” he said. He said his support for Buhari was because he stood out among other presidential candidates because of his determination to bequeath a secured future for the youth of Nigeria. “President Buhari has opened up the space for the youth of the country to participate politically, economically, and all other areas of the economy. “Recently, there was the women and youth campaign wing that was inaugurated by the president, which showed that he wants to ensure that the youth and the women have a strong voice in his re-election campaign. “We believe that by doing that, Mr president wants us to be part of his administration going forward. Mr President is one who has made us believe again in our country, who has made us proud of our country. “At the international stage, we are not being looked upon like a pariah nation. So I believe for Nigerians at home and Nigerians in the diaspora, they have seen that Mr president is the best candidate.’’ Mr Haruna Madisca, Organising Secretary of The Buhari Youth Organisation, also said Buhari was a man of integrity and the fear of God, which Nigeria needed at this time. He said Nigerians could not trust Atiku, saying his plan to sell the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) if elected was questionable. He added that Buhari had provided enabling environment for small businesses to thrive. Madisca, who is President, Goron Oil and Gas Limited, said through the NNPC Renewable Energy Department, there is a $25 million investment in cassava in Kogi that would be producing 40,000 litres of bio-ethanol per day. “The investment start-up on a turnkey basis is $25 million. The plant will employ over 2,500 people on a full time basis,” he said, saying such investment was at risk should NNPC be sold... The sect claims that the PDP Presidential candidate would come out victorious in the February Elections. Dr. Iboi Okhue, the spokesperson of the association announced this to Sunday Independent in a telephone conversation. The spokesperson of AWWN said that he was sure the victory of Atiku was sealed by them after two meetings held in those mountainous regions. Also, in a staggering prediction, Iboi Okhue also said that Atiku’s victory would especially emanate from unexpected regions in the north where his contending opponent Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) supposedly has a firm grip. Photo credit- Concise news The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council in Ekiti State has challenged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to tell Nigerians the political history of those President Muhammadu Buhari will inaugurate as members of his campaign council on Monday. The way the APC is going with its desperate political recruitments, we only hope Nigerians won’t one day see Evans, the alleged kidnapper mounting the rostrum to campaign for the reelection of the President”, Director of Media and Publicity, Lere Olayinka, said in a statement on Sunday. The PDP urged Ekiti people in particular and Nigerians in general to take note of those President Buhari will be presenting tomorrow as Vice Chairmen (North and South), Director General as well as Zonal Coordinators of his campaign. The statement read; “PDP, like every organisations had its fair share of bad elements and we are happy that those corrupt elements left the party and are now comfortably calling the shots in the APC, playing leading roles in the reelection campaign of a President they told Nigerians had integrity. “At the top echelon of the campaign council of their Mr. Integrity is Rotimi Amaechi, a man who has lived close to 20 years of his existence on public fund, having spent eight years as Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly and seven and half years as the State governor on the ticket of PDP. Out of 20 years of his political life, he has only spent four in APC. “Senator George Akume, who is the Vice Chairman (North) of the Buhari’s Campaign Council was Governor of Benue State from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007 on the platform of PDP while Senator Ken Nnamani, who is the Vice Chairman (South) was Senate President between 2005 and 2007 on PDP platform. “Senator Aliyu Wamakko, who is to lead Buhari’s campaign in the Northwest was elected governor of Sokoto State in 2007 and 2011 on the platform of PDP while his Northeast counterpart, Senator Ali Ndume was elected to the Senate for Borno South, in 2011 as PDP candidate. “In the North Central, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, a two term PDP governor of Nasarawa State is President Buhari’s campaign director. “Most importantly, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who is the campaign director for South South was until a few months ago the PDP Leader in the Senate and he was two term governor of Akwa Ibom State as well as Commissioner. “They have now rechristened these corrupt people that could not fit into the reformed and rejuvenated PDP as progressives, with President Buhari giving them protection. Even properties seized from them when EFCC was still fighting corruption and not being used as attack-dog against opposition elements as being done under the APC government have all been returned. “Furthermore, they have been assigned with task of selling Buhari, an expired product to Nigerians so that they can keep enjoying his protection at the expense of suffering Nigerians.. Saudi women will no longer be the last to know they’ve been divorced. A new Justice Ministry regulation taking effect Sunday will make it mandatory for a woman to be notified by text message when a court issues her husband’s divorce decree, Saudi lawyer Nisreen al-Ghamdi said. Currently, some men register divorce deeds at the courts without even telling their wives, al-Ghamdi said by phone from Jeddah. “The new measure ensures women get their rights when they’re divorced,” she said, referring to alimony. “It also ensures that any powers of attorney issued before the divorce are not misused.” A copy of a Justice Ministry circular al-Ghamdi shared said the new service meshes with ministry efforts to keep in step with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 blueprint for economic and social reforms. Women have gained more rights since the crown prince consolidated his power a couple of years ago. Saudi Arabia has lifted the ban on driving – the only one of its kind in the world – and has loosened many restrictions related to gender mixing and social life. But women still adhere to a a male guardianship system that requires them, according to receive approval to apply for a passport, travel outside the country, study abroad on a government scholarship, get married or even exit prison.
