When we were asked to submit our names and addresses to the moderators, we were not really told how they were going to be used. But we hoped for the best. Now that the exercise is complete and operational, I must add that it left more to be desired.

I applaud the 23 dealers who took the time to provide their information. The number is actually 22 if you exclude Siena who is not really a car dealer. But therein lies the problem. Getting only 23 responses out of a hundred or more dealers is not very encouraging. The question now is: “Why haven’t the other dealers provided their information? Is there a good reason not to have done so?” Those of us that did now look like fools since those that did not suffered no consequence.

To increase compliance with this exercise, I suggest the following:

1. Add “Verified Dealer” to the user name of every dealer that submitted his/her information.
2. Add “Non-Verified Dealer” to the user name of every dealer that is yet to submit his/her information.
3. Restrict access to the main auto section to verified dealers only. Non-verified dealers should use the Bulk Section, 

I bet you if some or all of the above steps are taken, you will see compliance sky-rocket.

So far, the dealer registration exercise has done little to solve the problem of rampant multiple IDs which is one of the biggest problems it was intended to solve. If no steps are taken to significantly increase compliance with the exercise by the end of the year, I will then humbly ask the moderators to remove my name from the list.

P.S: In the past, some people had noted that categorizing dealers as “Verified” or “Approved” will put Nairaland owners in legal jeopardy in cases of fraud or other mishaps. That may be true. But if it is done with clear and conspicuous disclaimers, that will be avoided. If “Verified” or “Approved” is not acceptable, we should look for other alternatives.
