Hi,

Decorating your home can be a daunting prospect – all those white walls and empty spaces with nothing to fill them with yet.
As tempting as it may be, don't be seduced by a quick fix, you'll probably regret it.
Here are 11 common mistakes you should avoid at all costs…
1. Buying everything in one day
Shopping for an entire room’s décor in one day is not only stressful, it's an all-round bad idea. Very bad idea.
You run the risk of matching and you don’t want to do that – take your time, aim for a layered decorating process. Build the look and feel of a room.

2. Buying furniture before measuring a room
Sounds silly doesn't it, but In the whirlwind of ‘we just bought a house’ excitement, many homeowners buy items before they’ve even moved in.
Rather than making buying decisions based solely on a floor plan, live in your space for a while.
3. Picking pale paint
The larger the space you're painting, the more tonal depth your wall colour needs to have.
If your home features an open plan, when deciding on the main colour, select one that's slightly darker than you'd normally choose for a small room.
4. Buying area rugs that are too small
You should allow for a 12- to 16-inch border of flooring around a room's perimeter; anything smaller, and the rug will look too insignificant.
The front legs of your furniture should sit on the area rug, so the rug doesn't appear to "float" in the middle of the room.
5. Opting for no bed headboard
The head of the bed is the focal point of any bedroom, but many people tend to overlook the headboard.
If you don't have one, try an eye-catching artwork or a decorative tapestry – or paint the wall behind the bed a dramatic colour.
6. Decorating without help
Decorating is costly, difficult and emotional (has no one else ever cried over gloss paint?), so why not invest in the help of a professional? For a small percentage of your overall budget, you'll have the guarantee that your project will look great for years to come.
7. Buying too many small accessories
Step away from that cushion! Forgoing trendy accessories for a year or two could save you enough money to buy a substantial piece of furniture you'll have forever.
8. Hanging frames too high
The bottom of the artwork should be eight to ten inches above the top of a piece of furniture, be it a headboard, sofa or credenza. In a hallway or stairwell, hang art so that the middle of the work is 66 inches from the floor or steps.
9. Not making the front door the focus
Don’t be afraid to add a pop of colour to your front door – you want to make a strong first impression.
The front door should be the first thing visitors see; the garage door should be the last, so paint it a similar colour to that of the house. Paint the front door a complementary colour so it stands out.
10. Displaying collectibles all over the house
Dotting them all around the house only lends a cluttered look to your decor. Instead, create a big impact by grouping a collection together – either frames on a wall or figurines on a shelf.
11. Having more than one focal point in a room
Every space has a focal point, so try not to blur the lines. In the living room, the focal point is usually the TV, sometimes the fireplace (whichever you enjoy most, no judgement here). In the bedroom, it's the headboard; in the bathroom, it’s the vanity area.

WHAT KIND OF PAINT WOULD BE DURABLE FOR A KID'S ROOM?
Choose a paint with some sheen such as a satin, semi-gloss or gloss finish. Generally the higher the sheen the more durable and washable the paint. For walls and woodwork use a 100% acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is tougher than latex paint though both terms might be used to describe any water-base paint. Use acrylic if available. Acrylic paints labeled for use on trim and woodwork can be used on walls also and can be tinted

THE DARK COLOR I USED TO PAINT MY WALLS IS DRY BUT STILL SEEMS TACKY, WHAT HAPPENED?
This sometimes happens with dark colored paints of semi-gloss or gloss finishes. Because of the amount of colorant in some dark colors the actual drying or curing time may be longer. Also latex and acrylic paints dry to a flexible film or layer of paint. This lack of hardness along with the gloss makes the paint feel like it has not dried. It should get better after a few days as the paint fully cures. To avoid the thick, heavy look and tacky feel of latex paints try thinning it about 10% next time.
WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PAINT OVER A GLOSSY INTERIOR PAINT?
First make sure the surface is clean. If the paint is water-based a cleaner such as TSP or Spic and Span can be used. Avoid cleaners having alcohol or ammonia in them as these may soften water-based paints. If the paint is oil-based stronger cleaners can be used such as Windex Multi-Surface or Fantastic. Rinse and dry then sand to dull the gloss and give “tooth” to the new paint. Sanding sponges work well on flat and rounded surfaces. Use about a 150 to 200 grit size or something labeled “Fine”. Spot prime areas where the paint has been sanded or chipped off. If the old paint is oil-based an oil-based paint should be used again. New on the market are acrylic paints that are said to be able to adhere to an oil-based paint. If acrylic paint is used to paint over oil-based paints then prepping the old surface becomes even more important. Do not take shortcuts when cleaning and sanding. It is our advice to spot test the new paint on the old surface before doing a major project. If the old paint is water-based then either oil or water-based paints may be used to repaint.
WHAT SIZE PAINT BRUSH SHOULD I USE?
There is no one answer as it will depend on what you intend to paint. But I can give you some general guidelines. First use one that is comfortable to hold. The brush should feel balanced in your hand and the shape of the handle be comfortable. Basically most painting can be done with one of three sized brushes. A small 1 or 1½ inch angle sash, a medium size of 2, 2½, or 3 inch angle sash and if needed a large size 4 inches wide. The small one is great for tight spaces between molding and walls, cabinets and walls or craft projects. The medium size is used for cutting-in walls and ceilings, painting trim, woodwork, cabinets, shutters and just about anything. This will be the most used brush. The angle sash is more useful than a straight cut brush because it gives you the ability to paint around details of molding and profiles but does everything a straight cut brush can do. The angle also matches the natural painting motion for most people. The large 4 inch brush will be needed for painting exterior trim or siding and large areas that cannot be rolled or sprayed. Whatever size you need buy the best brush available. Wooster, Purdy and Corona are good brands. A good quality brush will last a very long time if properly cleaned and stored after each use. For most people doing do-it-yourself painting project's around the home a few good brushes will last a lifetime.

Painting Preparation

Is there a room in the house that needs painting? Or just thinking about painting a room? Probably. Can it be done? Sure, of course it can! A total makeover or just a freshening up of a room can be accomplished with a coat or two of paint. But, before the paint goes on, take time to prepare the room for results that are satisfying, long lasting and beautiful. Think of the following as a steps bye step guide — a simple recipe for the preparation work necessary before painting. There are four steps to cover: Plan; Protect; Patch; and Prime.

Plan
Several days before beginning, go to the target room, make a visual inspection, and ask questions such as:
What needs to be painted? Decide if only the walls will be painted or will this project include the trim, woodwork, ceilings, etc.
Do these surfaces need to be cleaned?
Are there water stains or markings that need to be sealed over?
What color is appropriate for the future use of this room?
Is the trim painted with Waters based (which would be latex or acrylic) or oil-based paint?
What tools, brushes, rollers, drop cloths, paints, primers and materials will be needed?
When can this project be accomplished? Plan blocks of time for each step.
Are there gaps between mouldings, holes or cracks in the walls or any damage requiring repairthey

Paint Recommendations
A paint for every surface... Paint has been used for centuries to decorate walls, ceilings, buildings, objects, furniture and practically every solid surface imaginable. From castle to cave to canvas, objects of art and decoration, a stately home, hotel room or apartment, there is a paint for everything. Finding and using the proper paint for any surface is not difficult today. If it needs to be painted there is a paint made to do the job. And using the proper paint is very important to achieve a long-lasting and satisfying decorated surface. It is these results that are the motivation to use the appropriate paint. The charts found at “ Paint Types and Their Uses” can be a guide to find the right paint or primer for the task at hand.

Painting Wood
If you don't have a vacuum, wipe off the dust or residue with a dry cloth, finishing off with a damp cloth. Wait for the wood to fully dry. Paint or primer won't adhere properly to dirty surfaces. Paint does its job best when the surface that you apply it to is clean.

Painting Exterior
Exterior paints come in a wide variety of colors and sheens, as well as different price levels. Usually you will get what you pay for, the more expensive paint should be a better quality. Avoid "contractor grade" paints unless you must have the cheapest paint - this grade will not give long-lasting satisfaction. An 100% acrylic paint has proven to be very durable, color-fast and easy to apply.

Decorative Ironwork or Iron Railings

repair spots with epoxy putty or reweld if safety is an issue, use steel brush to remove flaking rust . red oxide primer, spray cans are very handy for a few spots, be careful of the overspray drifting, brushing or rolling on the primer may apply a thicker coat. exterior grade oil-based paint is best

Interior Paints

Acrylic Flat: no sheen, less washable, can be slightly chalky. walls, ceilings .soap and water for cleaning, water or Floetrol for thinning

What most of us don’t understand is that interior design takes a very keen and knowledgeable eye. We may be out shopping and see something we love, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will look perfect in our home. Interior designers understand how color, lighting, room size, scale, and placement all affect how items look in a room and dictates whether they will make or break a room design.

There are a lot of common mistakes that almost everyone makes when designing their interiors. Here we look at the 5 most common mistakes and how to avoid making them:

Shop Around and Budget Before Buying

We are all prone to impulse buys. It’s not to say that you shouldn’t buy something that you fall immediately in love with, but maybe just keep the receipt in case it doesn’t work the way you had originally thought.

Before heading to the furniture showroom, it’s best to have a plan and a budget well-established. First, your rooms need to be measured. The furniture placement and size need be planned properly. Luckily, there are a lot of online room arrangement tools that are free and easy to use.

Go into a showroom with a plan in place, helping you know what you want and making sure you stick within your budget. Buyers remorse is an awful feeling, so plan first and shop later.

“When you enter into a room, it should be like a city scape…a combination of different heights. You never want everything in a room to be a the same level or the same size. Accomplish this with different heights/sizes in your furnishings, art placement and window treatments.”

Scale is the number one mistake that almost everyone makes when it comes to interior design. This is probably the case because it takes a talented eye to decorate a room with impeccable scale. Some people put too many small things in a room, thereby cluttering the room and not giving the eye a place to land.

While others put too many large, bulky items in one room, making it look stuffed and small. The secret to proper scale is a mixture of different shapes, heights and sizes. If there is only one thing that you hire an interior designer for, it is help with proportion and scale. With the right scale your room is well on its way towards a successful design.

It happens to everyone— you are shopping and see the perfect home decor accessory. Immediately you think, Oh! this will look perfect in my TV room!

Of course, you give in to the impulse buy and excitedly bring home your new-found treasure— only to discover that what looked liked the ideal accessory looks hideous when put in place, and you are left saying, What was I thinking? Where did I go wrong?
