shoggie: Glory be to God in the highest place. I was denied an F1 Visa today.
I was happy atleast that I fought a good fight of faith up till now after four sucessive rescheduling of my
Visa interview since the first time I booked my interview in November.

My second appreciation goes to everyone on this blog who has been contributing immensely for intended aspirants.
My special unmitigated enthusiasm goes to imperiouxx, nairaspace, walex, Yvete, mammacita etc for their PAINSTAKING effort on everybody from my day one on this blog.
I am dauntless & not in anyway pessimistic.
But to aspirants & the gurus, it is another time to learn from each other.
Here goes my Interview at 10:45, Abuja:
VO : Good morning ( he denied every living person I witnessed except one husband & wife that came for renewal)
Me : Good morning Sir ( I grinned as usualto cool tempo)
VO : Pass me your documents
VO : Sorry, please give some minutes I will be back in a moment.
Me : Calm, waited for like two minutes not even thinking about anything.
Vo : hello, how did you learn about the school?
Me : I dowloaded the best 200 universities based on US News report on university ranking & I used internet to search for those that suite my profile.
VO : Nodded
VO : So you are going for Masters in Bleep course.
Me : Yes
VO : So you what will Bleep course do for you.
Me : I love lecturing, I worked hard to graduate as the best students from my department because I wil like to work as a lecurer in any of our best universities & will also like to work as a research consultant to some of our research institutes since most of them are affiliated to our National universities.
VO : Nodded
VO : Pass me your statement of Accounts
Me : Passed
VO : He glanced through each page & Keep murmuriing sth about $77,000 on my I-20 which was the money I submitted to my school before my I-20 was issued.(possibly he mistaken it for $36, 400 for tution fee on my I-20 as well)
Me : I stayed calm, confidence & a bit indifference since I have 18million plus on the statement of account
VO : Is it only the family type who is sponsoring your study. He asked sth on this twice
Me : Yes, My brother. He failed to ask about what he does. I was waiting for him to ask me about what he does but he failed to do so.
VO : Have you travelled outside Nigeria before
Me : No
VO : Continuing typing & suddenly said your Visa is denied because your family type shows insufficient fund & that I may reapply at any time.
Me : Thank you Sir.
Am happy for one singular reason, I did not lose courage & not too bothered about whether he was going to approve or deny.
Observation : The other lady in window 6 issued almost everybody (9:1 if not 100%), even those going to community colleges, infact, she approved two guys who have graduated since 2006, No SAT or TOEFL but one kind diploma certificates. She was just too happy that we all of us knew that whosoever fortunate to meet her has already got his/her Visa approved.
I had so much time to count the number of applicants'passport on his desk who he has granted Visa, around ten but less than 15 since morning oh!Throughout my time there, he did not issued anybody visa except the couple who came for renewal.
Those going to Abuja, pray against window 7 guy, he is a saddist, too reluctant to issued Visa as if we were goig to US to steal his hard earning dollars.
Sorry for the delay

swaggz101: Hello house, first I want to thank all of you who contribute to this forum especially with ur experiences through the application to studies and post-studies. God will bless you and continue to crown ur success wt more success. I gained a lot from here and want to contribute my experience at the US consulate in Lagos last week.

My interview was for 8.30 am and I woke up 5 am (considering the distance between VI and my house).

First, I spent almost 800 naira the previous day snapping 8 beautiful passport photos in a studio which i tot were perfect for the interview. On arriving on the street of the consulate, people rushed me to snap passport, I laughed and asked how much and was told 1500, I said let me see a sample and I was shocked to see it was much bigger than mine. I remember looking for a ruler the previous day to measure my passports but didn't get any. I had only 1k extra on me so I asked if they would take 1k and one of them agreed. This was how I got the passport i eventually used. My first advice to prospective interviewees is to snap when u get there, its less stressful.

Secondly, let me run through the documents I had with me and I think you should also have them too.
I-20 with any other document from the school, Passport, visa fee payment reciept, SEVIS fee reciept, DS160 confirmation page, sponsor's financial statements of accounts, letter from sponsor, letter from company where sponsor works showing the annual salary, GRE result print out ( and Toefl if you did it).

The first 5 are a MUST have to pass the screening and be allowed to go-in for the interview.

The crowd at the consulate was huge and I saw all kinds of people, I also understand its that way everyday. I was scared at first but I gained confidence when I came across some people who did not even understand what some documents with them were, some couldn't even speak English (only broken), and some were asking me questions as if I wasn't there for the interview like them.

Straight to the interview now, she was a nice looking lady who had rejected everyone I saw with her before me.

VO: Please pass your documents, I passed my I-20 and passport only (please give ONLY what is asked of you).
ME: Good morning, with a nice smile on my face (not showing teeth)
VO: Good morning, with a nice smile back at me. (first time I saw her smile throughout and surprisingly she left the smile on all-through) Please try what i did, it works like magic.
VO: Have you travelled out of Nigeria before?
ME: Yes, ive travelled to Ghana on a student exchange program in 2007 (it was actually just to go and play but nobody cares anyway).
VO: So what are you going to do in the US?
ME: I'm going to get a masters degree in Mechanical Engineering
VO: How did you hear about the school?
ME: From engineering journals in my office and over the internet. (na lie, my friend finished from there thats how i got to know).
VO: So why the course?
ME: Because I currently work as an engineer and I face engineering problems everyday which have to do with failure of materials, I would be doing research in Materials engineering to enable me develop stronger engineering materials for todays work demands. (lie again, i planned the response and don't even know much about research in materials engineering, I just used it because i haven't heard anybody use it before. Note: please develop your own UNIQUE response to this question, u can ask for people's opinion b4 the interview day to see if its convincing enough)
VO: So u would be doing research in what again?
ME: Materials Engineering, I would be doing 3D development of materials with computer software (please stick to the story u tell and don't change mouth because they will know)
VO: Will you return after your studies?
ME: Yes, my company is expanding massively and building three more plants. They have encouraged young engineers to develop themselves for the new higher vacancies which would be available later.
VO: Did u apply to any other school?
ME: Yes, to three schools and I named them (another lie, I only applied to one school which is the one i got admission to)
VO: Did u write any tests?
ME: Yes I wrote the GRE, I didn't write TOEFL cos none of the schools I applied to asked for it. (she looked at my I-20 where it is stated that I have the english requirement needed)
VO: what were ur scores?
ME: told her my GRE scores. (She did some things on the computer, maybe verifying the scores)
VO: Who is ur sponsor?
ME: My dad
VO: What does he do?
ME: hes a banker, he works with xyz bank.
VO: Go pick up ur visa on tuesday at ur selected pick-up centre, enjoy ur studies!
ME: Thank you, smiled gently and walked out (I was dancing AZONTO inside my body).

No additional documents were asked of me from her, I figured that they only ask for other documents when they see a red flag or when u change mouth during the interview (or maybe just in my case).

In summary, please practice possible questions uve seen on this thread, majorly peoples' narration of experience and also note that THE QUESTIONS ARE ALWAYS THE SAME OR ARE VERY SIMILAR. Learning from this thread is as good as hearing it from the VOs directly. Also welcome criticism of ur answers, it will help make you more prepared.

Finally please feel free to ask questions, ill be glad to respond. Thanks again to you guys for helping me get it. Ure all wonderful!

Congratz
