Nairaland / General / North Korea Celebrate Its Birthday With A Huge Show Of Military Stre by Isiomabright: 8:06am On Sep 09, 2018
September 09, 2018

Hundreds of trucks carrying thousands of troops lined a Pyongyang riverbank in the pale light of dawn early Sunday, as nuclear-armed North Korea prepared to celebrate its birthday with a huge show of military strength.
Sunday is the 70th anniversary of the 1948 foundation of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, as the North is officially known, three years after Moscow and Washington divided the peninsula between them in the closing days of the Second World War.
Such set-piece dates are a mainstay of the North’s political calendar, particularly when round numbers are involved, and have traditionally been occasions for showing off its latest hardware.
“Anniversaries are important in the DPRK, and this one is particularly so,” said Evans Revere of the Brookings Institution think-tank in Washington.
“These celebrations are also occasions for the leader to demonstrate accomplishments and national power, and to take credit for them.”
The displays — overseen by leader Kim Jong Un, the third member of his family to rule the country — are crucial to Korea-watchers, who observe them closely for clues about its latest advances.
First, companies of soldiers goose-step through Kim Il Sung Square, then the material becomes steadily more intimidating, with

Nairaland / General / Public Panic In Mpape District Of Abuja As Earth Tremor (earthquake) Show Signs. by Isiomabright: 8:03pm On Sep 07, 2018
Mr Alex Nwegbu, Director-General, Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has assured the general public not to panic over the earth tremor experienced in Mpape district of Abuja.

According to him, the monitoring involves reflecting seismic and gravity measurement.

Nwegbu said that the agency dispatched a team of geologists and geophysicists, immediately it received the news of a disturbing ground shaking, experienced by the inhabitants of Mapape.

“From the interview we conducted with people and the reconnaissance survey carried out, we found out that the vibration started around 2.30p.m on Sept. 5 which lasted about a second but reoccurred three hours later around 5.30p.m.

“The vibration was again felt around 8.00p.m which lasted for 10 seconds,’’ he said.

The Director-General said the survey carried out also showed that there were no cracks on the buildings or on the ground.

He advised that once people notice such earth tremor, they should move out of the house and monitor the progress.

Nwegbu, however, advocated increased funding to enable the agency properly carry out its mandate.

According to Nwegbu, earthquakes tend to be concentrated in particular zones which coincide with the boundaries of the tectonic plates into which the earth is divided.

The Director-General said that it was erroneous to think that countries or zones not contiguous with plate boundaries were aseismic.

Nwegbu said that Nigeria was not situated at

Nairaland / General / Facebook Has Removed A Feature That Allowed Users To Translate Burmese , A Hate by Isiomabright: 6:36pm On Sep 06, 2018
A Reuters investigation published on August 15 documented how Facebook was failing in its efforts to combat vitriolic Burmese language posts about Myanmar's Rohingya Muslims. Some 700,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar over the past year amid a military crackdown and ethnic violence. In late August, United Nations investigators said Facebook had been "a useful instrument for those seeking to spread hate" against the Muslim minority group.

The Reuters article also showed that the translation feature was flawed. It cited an anti-Rohingya post that said in Burmese, "Kill all the kalars that you see in Myanmar; none of them should be left alive." Kalar is a pejorative for the Rohingya. Facebook had translated the post into English as "I shouldn’t have a rainbow in Myanmar."
A spokeswoman for Facebook said the Burmese translation feature was "switched off" on August 28. She said the Reuters article and feedback from users "prompted us to do this."

"We are working on ways to improve the quality of the translations and until then, we have switched off this feature in Myanmar," the spokeswoman wrote in an email.

Facebook has had other problems interpreting Burmese, Myanmar's main local language. In April, the California-based social-media company posted a Burmese translation of its internal "Community Standards" enforcement guidelines.

Many of the passages were botched. A sentence that in English stated "we take our role in keeping abuse off our service seriously" was translated into Burmese as "we take our role seriously by abusing our services."

The Reuters investigation found more than 1,000 examples of hate speech on Facebook, including calling the Rohingya and

Business / Amazon Joins $1 Trillion Club, On Pace To Overtake Apple by Isiomabright: 8:24pm On Sep 05, 2018
Amazon.com Inc on Tuesday joined Apple Inc in the $1 trillion club, becoming the second member of the group after its stock price doubled in 15 months.
If the online retailer's share price continues at its recent pace, it will be a matter of when, not if, Amazon's market valuation eclipses that of iPhone maker Apple, which reached $1 trillion on Aug. 2.
Apple took almost 38 years as a public company to achieve the trillion dollar milestone, while Amazon got there in 21 years. While Apple's iPhone and other devices remain popular and its revenues are growing, it is not keeping up with Amazon's blistering sales growth.
Amazon has impressed investors by successfully diversifying its business into virtually every corner of the retail industry, altering how consumers buy products and putting major pressure on many brick-and-mortar stores.
It also provides video streaming services and bought upscale supermarket Whole Foods. And its cloud computing services for companies have become a major driver of earnings and revenue.
"Amazon's a little bit more dynamic than Apple because the iPhone has become more mature. Amazon's cloud business is an extra growth driver that Apple doesn't have," said Daniel Morgan, portfolio manager at Synovus Trust in Atlanta, Georgia who describes Amazon's cloud services as its "crown jewel."
In the second quarter the unit accounted for 55 percent of Amazon's operating income and

Politics / Oby Ezekwesili Said Chinese Attitude To Indebtedness Is The HARDEST In The World by Isiomabright: 9:44am On Sep 05, 2018
Chinese attitude to Indebtedness is the HARDEST in the world. I know, because one had to deal with it in the course of my work @ the World Bank, helping African countries to get the HIPC Debt Cancellation.

It ANNOYS ME TO NO END to see our countries BINGING on Chinese Loans.
Most annoying of this latest round of RISING SCALE of Public Debt by countries of the continent is that the politicians are behaving EXACTLY like the ones who PILED UP DEBTS in the 80s & 90s.
“Just sign up for plenty Loans...forget about imperatives of Debt Sustainability.” KAI!!
The Chinese KNOW EXACTLY what they are doing. If you read their Loan Agreements with African countries, you will see how TIGHT they cover their exposure. Meanwhile, our own Leaders go there to naively, gleefully and with huge dose of inferiority complex, sign on to BAD DEALS.
Our Teams put so much effort into helping countries which received significant Debt Reductions under HIPC to build up Debt Management capacities.
The idea was to help avoid a REPEAT of the DEBT ALBATROSS of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Alas, the REPEAT is on @ a LARGE SCALE.
For the massive Investment that our continent needs for even basics like Infrastructure (some $93B annually from one of the studies by our

Mr Sarki Labaran, a chieftain of the party declared the stand of party stakeholders while addressing hundreds of supporters who converged on the state Headquarters of the party on Monday in Kano.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Labaran spoke on behalf of the executive committee members of the party who were also present at occasion.

He said it was unfortunate that the PDP National Working Committee took the decision despite the court order retraining it from taking the action.

“The Peoples Democratic Party in Kano state has rejected the dissolution of the state executive committee as the action was a complete violation of the court order which was issued on Aug. 28.

He wondered why the National Working Committee of the party took the decision knowing fully well that the state party leaders were elected to serve a four year tenure.

Nairaland / General / Not Fewer Than Four And Three Soldiers Killed In Mogadishu Local Government Suic by Isiomabright: 3:49pm On Sep 02, 2018

“We shall let the media know about the final casualty levels, but this is what we have so far identified,” Mr Hassan said, adding that 14 other people were wounded in the incident.

The car packed with explosives exploded at the Howlwadag, one of the 17 districts of Mogadishu.

It exploded after it hit the perimeter wall of the compound, located in a residential area.

Most impact was absorbed by a Quran school and a nearby mosque next to the district administrative centre.

Sports / Nobody Congratulate Nigerian, African Athletes Win Gold For Bahrain In Asian Gam by Isiomabright: 6:24pm On Aug 31, 2018
The tiny Gulf kingdom of Bahrain finished joint-top of the Asian Games athletics table with 12 golds — but not everyone is rushing to congratulate them.

That is because not a single track win at Asia’s regional Olympics would have been achieved without “naturalised” athletes who were born in Africa.

Bahrain’s policy of scouting and offering nationality to talented foreign athletes — which is entirely legal — has stoked controversy for years, but the results have been particularly stark at this Games in Indonesia.

All 10 individual athletics gold won by Bahrain were earned by runners born on the African continent — Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya and Morocco.

Of the two gold-winning relays teams, all but two athletes were also of African origin.

For the athletes themselves, the appeal of switching allegiance is obvious — financial security is key, but tales of poor treatment or lack of opportunities in their countries of birth are commonplace.

“Bahrain was good pay, a good treatment,” explained 1,500m and 5,000m gold winner Kalkidan Befkadu, 27, who says she moved to the Gulf nation six years ago.

“There’s so many strong athletes in Ethiopia so it’s a challenge to compete, so that’s also why I changed.”

“Yes I’m pleased with my decision,” she told AFP with a beaming smile, minutes after winning her second gold of the meet.

Nairaland / General / MTN Nigeria Challenge CBN On Illegal Repatriation Of $8.1 Billion On August 30, by Isiomabright: 3:08pm On Aug 30, 2018
MTN Nigeria on Thursday refuted the claims by the Central Bank of Nigeria that it illegally, in collusion with four Nigerian banks repatriated $8.1billion from its Nigerian operations to offshore investors.

The CBN said the remittances between 2007 and 2015, in tranches of of 2.63 billion dollars, 1.766 billion dollars and 348 million dollars were done in flagrant violation of the rule that says it can only be done with regular ‘Certificates of Capital Importation (CCIs)’ issued by the apex bank.

The CBN said MTN did the repatriation after illegally converting shareholders’ loan of $399, 594,146 to preference shares. As part of the sanctions, four banks, Stanbic IBTC Nigeria, Citibank Nigeria and Diamond Bank Plc,were fined by the CBN.

Standard Chartered Bank would pay a fine of N2.47 billion, Stanbic IBTC, N1.88 billion, Citibank Nigeria, N1.26 billion and Diamond bank, N250 million.

Mr Funso Aina, Public Relations Manager, Corporate Affairs/Corporate Relations MTN denied the claims by the CBN

“MTN Nigeria received a letter on Aug 29 from Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) alleging that Certificate of Capital Important (CCIs) issued in respect of the conversion of shareholders’ loans in MTN Nigeria to preference shares in 2007 had been improperly issued.

Politics / Group Backs Buhari On Supremacy Of National Security Over Rule Of Law by Isiomabright: 11:00am On Aug 30, 2018
Project-2019 (P2019), a civil society organisation on Thursday said that President Muhammadu Buhari ‘s statement on national interest and the rule of law is legal and constitutional.

Mr Wale Ogunade, Convener of the group told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, that President Buhari ‘s statement was a restatement of the provisions of the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to him, the President’s statement takes its foundation from the fact that, the rule of law can only exist when the national interest and security is secured in a state of peace and tranquility. Otherwise, it is a farce.

President Buhari while flagging off the 2018 Annual General Conference of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja on Sunday, asserted the supremacy of national security and interest over and above the rule of law, quoting a judgment of the Supreme Court.

He said: “Rule of law must be subject to the supremacy of the nation’s security and national interest.

“Our apex court has had cause to adopt a position on this issue in this regard and it is now a matter of judicial recognition that; where national security and public interest are threatened or there is a likelihood of being threatened, the individual rights of those allegedly responsible must take second place in favour of the greater good of the society”.

Ogunade said that fundamental rights of citizens are not absolute as there could be limitations.

”As active stakeholders in the political development of the country, it becomes imperative to examine the statement dispassionately and objectively for the collective good.

”While it is a recognised fact that the rights of citizens are fundamental according to the constitution and international treaties of which Nigeria is a signatory, it’s also a fact that such rights are not absolute on their own, but with limitations.

”For example, the right to free speech is limited by the aftermath of libel or slander by whoever has been defamed.

”Also, the fundamental right of a citizen to free movement can be limited in the public interest or national security, if his or her actions constitute a threat to societal order through the provocative act of assaulting public sensibilities. For example, exercising the right to movement naked.

‘‘Again, the right of an individual or group to practice his/their religion is not an absolute right to permit the infringement on the rights of other citizens through making the public space inaccessible to them in the discharge of one’s religious rights. This is tantamount to a threat to public or national interest.

”Again, the fundamental read more
