Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State have applauded the suspension of National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, over his role in the crisis rocking the state chapter of the party.

The suspension of Oshiomhole by Edo APC followed the vote of no confidence passed on him by the Chairmen of the party in the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

A chieftain of the APC in the state and former Political Adviser to Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, Mr. Charles Idahosa, said the suspension of the national chairman is long overdue, noting “I commend our party for suspending Oshiomhole over his role in the crisis rocking the state chapter of the party. It is in public knowledge that Oshiomhole is the sponsor of the crisis rocking Edo APC. His suspension by Edo State Chapter of the APC is in order.”

“We cannot have someone who is a National Chairman of the ruling party and at the same time, sponsors divisive forces in his home ground. He should be more concerned about adding more states to the APC with the election coming up in Bayelsa and Kogi states, instead of causing disaffection that will make the national ruling party lose its only state in the South-South. We have lost more states to the opposition under Oshiomhole,” he added.

Idahosa said the suspended National Chairman should focus on the disaster in Bayelsa State where the APC is likely to be delisted from the ballot as a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja has disqualified the party’s candidate for the Bayelsa State governorship election.

A leader of the APC in Edo South, Rev. Michael Egharevba, said the suspension of the chairman became necessary to call him to order. He noted that leaders of the APC in the state cannot allow Edo State experience what happened in Zamfara State, where the party was unable to field any candidate in elections.

Noting that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole cannot be allowed to continue to fuel the crisis in the Edo APC, he said the national chairman has lost the confidence of members and leaders of the party in the state.

He added: “We don't want what happened in Zamfara or other parts of the country to happen in Edo State. The chairman should go to Bayelsa and deal with the situation the party’s candidate for the governorship election is facing with his running mate disqualified.”

Acting on intelligence, the Nigeria Customs Service, Murtala Mohammed International Airport Command, has intercepted two consignments of frozen foods like pork, turkey, meat and other perishable items on Sunday and Monday.

The first consignment was intercepted on a South African Airways flight from Johannesburg through the tarmac operatives of the command. The second consignment was abandoned at Gate 13 of the airport by the importers..

The two consignments had the total duty paid value of N68.850m. The Customs Area Comptroller, MMIA, Mr Wale Adeniyi, explained that officers of the command discovered the items after insisting on inspecting the consignments..

He said, “Though the airway bill described the goods as fresh vegetables but they were frozen food items, which are contraband in the country..

It became obvious that the importer through his agents had prepared pre-release documentation purporting the import to be fresh vegetables with the sole intention to evade the import prohibition order.”.

Adeniyi declared that the seizures were warning to importers of contraband goods into the country, reiterating that the command would make it extremely difficult for such persons to use the airport to perpetuate their criminal activities.

Edo govt procures more tricycle ambulances to deepen rural healthcare programme

The Edo State Government has purchased additional tricycle ambulances to facilitate the provision of quality healthcare services to residents in rural areas of the state.

The effort is aimed at strengthening the state government’s resolve to attain goal three of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages.

The ambulances were procured by the Edo State SDG Office, which has led a sustained push for affordable healthcare delivery with the equipping of public hospitals and health centers with top-of-the-range equipment to render quality service.

In his statement, The Special Adviser to the Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said that the state government is heavily investing in healthcare to ensure that ordinary citizens in the state are better served in public hospitals and health centers across the state.

According to him, The Edo State SDG office has been in strong commitment to promote quality healthcare delivery. The purchase of eight tricycles in addition to the ones we already have is aimed to boost the capacity of the beneficiary health facility to deliver quality healthcare to the people.

“As a government, our intervention in the healthcare sector cuts across the provision of these sort of support to the health centers by the Edo SDG Office as well as the through the Edo State Healthcare Improvement Programme (Edo-HIP), all aimed at ensuring that we meet our obligation on healthcare delivery to the people.”

He added that the tricycles are in addition of provision of toilets and potable water in markets across the state and the provision of Neo-natal healthcare facility at the Stella Obasanjo hospital aimed to ensure that the people are served with the right equipment to tackle mortality from illnesses and health complication.

Migration: Governor Godwin. Obaseki of Edo State seeks closure of illegal entry points into Nigeria

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has called for closure of illegal entry points into the country to curb nefarious activities of some illegal migrants.

The governor made the call while declaring open the 2019 Comptroller-General of Immigration’s Annual Conference in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Obaseki said Nigeria must join other countries in tightening their porous borders to prevent illegal migration.

He also said that, There is currently 1,490 there about illegal entering points into our country and this is encouraging illegal migration into the country. Some of these illegal migrants commit crimes in the country and even have the Nigeria Voters Card. It is worthwhile for any country to develop a policy on migration as it is necessary to manage a country's economy".

Obaseki, however, commended the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) for the introduction of the National Biometric Identity Card for Intra-ECOWAS Travel and Biometric Registration of Foreign Nationals as a new security measure in the country.

He said the theme of the conference, ‘Migration Management in a Developing Economy; the Role of NIS’ was apt as it would afford stakeholders the opportunity to evaluate their roles in combating illegal migration and deliberate a way forward.

Delivering a paper presentation at the conference, entitled ‘Government's Effort at Curtailing Irregular Migration: The Edo Experience,’ the governor said the state was committed to supporting policies aimed at reducing illegal migration.

He listed four modalities put in place by the state to combat illegal migration to Europe, to include Returnees Management; Resettlement and Reintegration; Advocacy and Awareness Promotion; Promotion of Human Rights and Development of the state's economy.

The governor said youths in the state were being trained and empowered with vocational skills and linked to jobs, while the basic education sector has been reformed to discourage citizens from embarking on illegal migration.

Earlier, Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, said the Federal Government was working towards the introduction of a better technology for the issuance of the Nigeria Passport such that there would not be physical contact between the passport seeker and passport provider.

Aregbesola said the new method of issuance would reduce fraud in the system.

He noted that the NIS Conference was to appraise the activities of the service for better management of migration in line with global practices.

On his part, the Comptroller General, NIS, Muhammad Babandede commended the Edo State Government for its efforts and commitment in the fight against human trafficking in the state.

Babandede explained that Edo State was chosen for the conference due to its commitment and determination in managing migration in the state, noting that while people see the negative sides of migration, the conference is aimed to expose the benefits and positive sides of migration, including its economic value to the state and nation.

"It is not wrong to travel but what is important is to manage it so that the travellers, the state and federal governments, alongside the destination countries benefit from migration,” he added.

Obaseki, while swearing-in Alhaji Osumah at Government House, in Benin City, said investigations by a panel constituted by the state government revealed that the former LG boss, Musa, was engaged in fraudulent activities and lacked ability to supervise the staff of the Council.

The panel which was said to be headed by S.E Omorodion with other members includes Mr. B.S. Kadiri. Isaac Sanu, also Mr. F. Ediagbonya, who is a Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Local Government and Mr. S.O Obakpolor, who served as the panel secretary.
They were then charged with all the responsibility to make sure they examine all the circumstances that is close to the alleged diversion of the funds in respect of monthly payment of salaries in Etsako West local government area native Council
between July 2018 to May 2019, examine the level of involvement of officials of the Local Government Council and apportion blame to erring officials.

All the panel’s findings has disclosed that over N46m was paid into 2 ghost employees account by a workers used by the removed Chairman of Etsako West government Council, Alhaji Yakubu.

The indicted staff, The very Mr. Saliu Abdullahi Sule, who Works as attendant, Grade Level (GL) 3 in Etsako West Local Council, Which was deployed to the department of Finance and Treasury as a computer operator and was later assigned the duty of preparing and submitting all the monthly salary update for the council by the chairman and heads of his administration. He inserted two ghost workers, namely Sule Fatima and Aliyu Yusuf, placing them on Grade Level fourteen each.
And according to the panel, after some period of 11 months and about two weeks, Danjuma then paid the ghost workers a total sum of N46, 899, 540.27, with the money transferred to his UBA account monthly.

The panel, however, recommended that Musa be “removed from office on grounds of negligence of duty, improper accounting and auditing of the council’s finances, lack of adequate supervision of staff and for allowing fraud under his nose.”
It conjointly suggested that Saliu Abdullahi Danjuma be fired from the service on grounds of dishonorable practices.
In addition to it, it was also recommended that the removed chairman should be made to refund all the illegally earned monies and thereafter, handed over to the police for prosecution, alongside the ghost workers.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the Department of State Service (DSS) an application to detain the convener of #RevolutionNow Protest, Omoyele Sowore in their custody.

In his ruling, Justice Taiwo Taiwo said he will grant the application only for a period of 45 days and the 45 days will start to count from today.

The DSS had earlier on Tuesday approached the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, seeking leave to detain Sowore, for 90 days.

A 25-year-old Nigerian immigrant has died after drowning during a boat cruise with his friends in in Montreal, QC, Canada.

Uchenna Stanley Nnaji has just been granted asylum in Canada, about two weeks earlier. He drowned Saturday in Lac des Sables in the Laurentian community of Ste-Agathe-des-Monts. .

He was with a group of friends near Ste-Lucie beach, about 100 kilometres northwest of Montreal, when he jumped off a boat into the water to swim at about 11:50 a.m. — and did not resurface. .

His body was recovered Sunday morning at about 10 a.m. by SQ divers. Firefighters and the SQ nautical team, which included divers, had patrolled the area on Saturday until dusk and the SQ resumed its search on Sunday at about 8 a.m.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal office, has arrested one Nelson Emuobosa Omo-Ode, for alleged money laundering.

Omo-Ode, a 32, Business Administration graduate of the Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan College, Malaysia, was arrested on July 18, 2019 at his residence at The Address Homes, Onikani Foreshore Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos, following a petition received by the Commission about his suspicious lifestyle.

Investigations showed that over N150, 000,000 (One Hundred and Fifty Million Naira) had passed through his account in recent time, which he could not account for.

The Commission recovered a Mercedes SUV from him at the point of arrest.

The suspect will be charged to court soon.

The Maiduguri Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 secured the conviction and sentencing of one Baba Shehu Hayatu, before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri on a one-count amended charge, bordering on cheating to the tune of N4million.

It will be recalled that Hayatu was first arraigned and remanded in prison on July 30, 2019 on a two-count charge, bordering on criminal breach of trust and cheating to the tune of N8.5million.

Before the commencement of his trial, Hayatu, however, opted for a plea bargain arrangement with the EFCC and compensated the nominal complaint with a piece of land and paid the sum of N4million.

Hayatu's journey to prison started when the EFCC received a petition against him from Mohammed Bukar, alleging that the accused sometime in 2017 approached the nominal complainant and demanded the sum of N4million promising to use the said sum to execute a purported contract awarded to him by his elder brother.

The amended one-count charge reads: “That you, Baba Shehu Hayatu, sometime in 2017 at Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, dishonestly induced one Mohammed Alhaji Bukar to deliver to you the sum of N4,000,000.00 (Four Million Naira) only for payment of execution of a purported contract awarded to you by one Mamman Hayatudeen who resides in Lagos and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Sections 320 (b) and 322 of the Penal Code Laws of Borno State Cap. 102 Vol. 3 of 1994 respectively”.

He pleaded "guilty" to the charge.

In view of his plea, prosecuting counsel, H.A. Shehu prayed the court to convict him as charged.

Thereafter, Justice Kumaliya held that: “You Baba Shehu Hayatu, charged for the offence of cheating is hereby convicted accordingly.”

During allocutus, counsel for the convict, J. Birem, pleaded for leniency and urged the court to temper justice with mercy.

A Ugandan court on Tuesday charged pop star turned leading opposition figure, Bobi Wine, with "annoying" President Yoweri Museveni.

Wine, who entered parliament in 2017, has emerged as a leading critic of Museveni - who has been in power for over three decades - and has faced multiple detentions while authorities have frustrated his efforts to perform.

He announced last month that he would take on Museveni in 2021 national elections. "This government of President Museveni is in panic mode.
At first it was treason and now it is annoying president Museveni. Who on earth can't be annoyed?" Wine told AFP. "It is a ridiculous charge and am ready to challenge it in court," he said.

A Lagos Division of the Federal High Court has ordered the freezing of three bank accounts allegedly linked to the Lagos State government and former governor, Akinwunmi #Ambode, over an alleged N9.9 billion fraud.

Chuka Obiozor, the judge, ordered the temporary freezing of the accounts, domiciled in Zenith Bank, Access Bank, and First City Monument Bank, following an exparte application brought by #EFCC.

According to the EFCC, N9.9 billion was paid from the state government’s accounts into the FCMB account opened on September 17, 2018, and operated by Adewale Adesanya, the permanent secretary in the Office of the Chief of Staff to Mr Ambode.

The anti-graft commission urged the court to freeze the account pending the conclusion of their investigation and possible prosecution of Mr Adesanya.

In an affidavit filed in support of the ex parte application, Kungmi Daniel, a member of the EFCC investigating team, said the schedule of the FCMB account showed how Mr Adesanya and the other signatories to the account made fraudulent fund transfers into the account from the accounts of the Lagos State Government.

Two men arrested after buying six TVs with fake bank alerts

Two men notorious for defrauding traders by generating fake bank alerts, have been arrested in Anambra state.

Eko Charles, 25, and Rabiu Idris, were arrested following inteligence report. They had gone to the shop of one Godwin Chukwu of No. 59 Zik Avenue, Awka on July 31st to buy television sets. .

They fraudulently generated and sent fake SMS alert for the payment of N200,000 to his phone and he released two 43 inch Television sets oblivious of their fraudulent act.

The criminals went to the same shop the next day, did the same thing and collected 4 Television sets and other accessories all valued at N230,000. .

Trouble however started when Chukwu went to the bank to withdraw the money but was told by the bank that no payment was made into his account.

As fate would have it, the duo had placed an order for 95 inch TV, a deep freezer, Sumec fireman generator with a promise to send an alert. .

They were arrested by police detectives who laid siege within and around the shop premises and arrested the main suspect, one Eko Charles who came to collect the items.

The police spokesperson say the four 32 inches Television sets earlier collected under false pretense from Chukwu were recovered from Rabiu Idris.

Girl lures her bestie to her fiance to rape her, records the act

The Ogun State police command has arrested 23-year-old Eniola Shittu for allegedly conspiring with her boyfriend, David Peremobowe, aged 31, to rape her close friend.

According to spokesman of the command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the suspects were arrested following a report lodged by the victim at Obantoko Division.

She said she was at home on July 24, at about 1:45p.m. when her friend, Eniola, sent message to her on WhatsApp that she should help her buy food and ‘skushis’ and bring to her boyfriend’s house at Somorin area of Obantoko, Abeokuta.

On getting there, the boyfriend, Peremobowe, offered her a bottle of beer, which she took but immediately she finished taking the beer, she became very weak.

He later unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the victim, and while he was at it, her friend, Eniola, used her phone to do a video recording of the act. The video and phone have since been recovered.

Court Jails Businessman for N30m Fraud, Arraigns Another for N3m Fraud

Justice Fadawu Umar of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri on July 25, 2019 sentenced one Usman Idris alongside his company, Influential Investment Limited to one year in prison on each of the three-count amended charge preferred against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Count one of the charges reads: “That you, Usman Ibrahim Idris, being a Managing Director and alter ego of Influential Investment Company Limited, a company registered in Nigeria, sometime between 6th May and 6th October, 2015 at Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did dishonestly misappropriate the sum of N15,000,000.00 (Fifteen Million Naira) being investment of Abubakar Mallam Baba in Investment Company Limited for telecommunication business, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 308 of the Penal Code Act Ca. 102 Laws of the Borno State of Nigeria and punishable under section 309 of the same Law.”

He was arraigned along with his company on April 15, 2019 for criminal diversion of funds to the tune of N30,000,000 and pleaded “not guilty”.

In the course of the trial, counsel for the EFCC, Benjamin Manji presented three witnesses and tendered three exhibits, which forced Idris and his company to enter into a plea bargain agreement with the EFCC prompting him to change to a guilty plea.

Subsequently, the prosecution substituted the initial two-count charge with an amended three-count charge, dated and filed on July 17, 2019 to which Idris and Influential Investment Company Limited pleaded “guilty”.

Justice Umar, thus convicted him accordingly and adjourned for sentencing.

Delivering judgement, the trial judge, held that: “On count one, you are hereby sentenced to one year imprisonment with an option of fine in the sum of N200,000.

“On count two, you are hereby sentenced to one year imprisonment with an option of N500,000.

Elder and Barrister Imoh Williams, the chairman of Abak Local Government Area, was today, suspended by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly after his aides were captured on video assaulting an artisan.

The Akwa Ibom governor, Udom Emmanuel, on Wednesday condemned the assault, describing it as “unacceptable in a civilised society and does not represent our core values”.
.
The assembly in a plenary on Thursday, directed Williams to proceed on indefinite suspension and mandated its committee on local government to investigate the incident and report back to the House within a month.
.
The artisan, Godwin Abraham, was assaulted at the premises of the local government council in Abak, on April 13, 2019, by two men said to be aides of Mr Williams.
.
They accused accused Abraham of taking to Facebook to “insult” the chairman because of some unresolved indebtedness – the artisan claimed he has not been paid N75, 000 for some decoration jobs he did for the chairman.

In a video, the victim, Grace Taku, appealed to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the international community to come to her rescue.
She said, “My name is Grace. I work with Action Against Hunger, an NGO in Borno state. My base is Damasak.”
“We went to work on Thursday, July 18, 2019, and on our way back to Damasak, we were caught by the army of Calipher.”
“We don’t where we are. At this moment, we don’t know where we are. I am the only Christian among them. I am appealing to the Christian Association of Nigeria to please assist and do something about me.
“I am also appealing to the Action Against Hunger, they should do something to make sure that we are released,” she added.
