Nairaland / General / Man Attacked By Seven Private Alsatian Dogs In Ajah, Lagos by itseedris(m): 1:55pm On Apr 28, 2015

A 45-year-old commercial driver, Saturday Akpomose, narrowly escaped death last Saturday, after he was attacked by seven dogs at Ajah area of Lagos State. The timely intervention of residents and passers-by saved the driver from the dogs.

Akpomose,Akpomose, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, had gone to the area with his wife to visit his in-law, Mr. Christian Peter, when the dogs pounced on him.

Vanguard gathered that the dogs, owned by a Navy Captain, were being taken out to ease themselves at a nearby uncompleted building, when they saw Akpomose and pounced on him.

The matter was reported at Ogombo Police Division, which referred Akpomose to the General Hospital at Akodo, for immediate treatment due to the severity of his injuries.

His story

“My wife and I went to visit my in-law on Sunday. He lives at Okun Ajah Road, in Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area. Later, on Tuesday morning, I just strolled out of the compound and came across the dogs.

“As I stepped out, I saw a security man coming out with several dogs. They were very huge Alsatian dogs. I was terrified when I saw them and as I tried to go back in, they overpowered the man holding them.

“As I bent down to pick a stone and scare them away, they pounced on me and that was all I knew. They bit me in almost all parts of my body. As I screamed, some residents came out and tried to scare away the dogs with sticks.

“My screams even woke up my in-law who was asleep in the house. At a time, I became weak and unconscious and it was the people who rushed me to the hospital.”

Dogs’ owner intervenes

When Vanguard visited the residence of the dogs’ owner, the Chief Security Officer attached to the building, who identified himself simply as Victor, said: “Immediately I got back home, I explained his condition to my boss who directed me to see his family and take a decision on how to transfer the victim to his own private hospital for proper medical attention.

“We have bought all the drugs they asked us to buy. We are showing the receipt to you just to let you know that we care about the victim.”

Health / Eight Most Popular Diets by itseedris(m): 1:01pm On Apr 28, 2015

There are literally hundreds of thousands of diets. Some are for losing weight, others for gaining weight, lowering cholesterol, living a long and healthy life, etc. The Mediterranean Diet, for example, reflects the culinary habits of southern European people.

The word diet comes from Old French diete and Medieval Latindieta meaning “a daily food allowance”. The Latin word diaeta and Greek word diaita mean “a way of life, a regimen”.

A diet can be described as a set course of eating and drinking in which the kind and amount of food one should eat is been planned out in order to achieve weight loss or follow a certain lifestyle.

This Medical News Today information article provides details on the most popular diets according to three criteria: how many articles there are around about these diets/lifestyles, how popular they seem to be generally, and how often we receive feedback on them.

Below you can see a list of the eight diets, a summary on each one, and links to specific articles about those diets:
1. Atkins Diet

The Atkins Diet, or Atkins Nutritional Approach, focuses on controlling the levels of insulin in our bodies through diet.1

If we consume large amounts of refined carbohydrates our insulin levels will rise rapidly, and then fall rapidly. Rising insulin levels will trigger our bodies to store as much of the energy we eat as possible – it will also make it less likely that our bodies use stored fat as a source of energy.

Most people on the Atkins Diet will consume a higher proportion of proteins than they normally do.
2. The Zone Diet

The Zone Diet aims for a nutritional balance of 40% carbohydrates, 30% fats, and 30% protein each time we eat. The focus is also on controlling insulin levels, which result in more successful weight loss and body weight control.

The Zone Diet encourages the consumption of good quality carbohydrates – unrefined carbohydrates, and fats, such as olive oil, avocado, and nuts.
3. Vegetarian Diet

There are various types of vegetarian: Lacto vegetarian, Fruitarian vegetarian, Lacto-ovo-vegetarian, Living food diet vegetarian, Ovo-vegetarian, Pescovegetarian, and Semi-vegetarian.3

The majority of vegetarians are lacto-ovovegetarians, in other words, they do not eat animal-based foods, except for eggs, dairy, and honey.

Studies over the last few years have shown that vegetarians have a lower body weight, suffer less from diseases, and generally have a longer life expectancy than people who eat meat.
4. Vegan Diet

Veganism is more of a way of life and a philosophy than a diet. A vegan does not eat anything that is animal based, including eggs, dairy, and honey.4

Vegans do not generally adopt veganism just for health reasons, but also for environmental and ethical/compassionate reasons.

Vegans believe that modern intensive farming methods are bad for our environment and unsustainable in the long term. If all our food were plant based our environment would benefit, animals would suffer less, more food would be produced, and people would generally enjoy better physical and mental health, vegans say.
5. Weight Watchers Diet

Weight Watchers focuses on losing weight through diet, exercise, and a support network.5

Weight Watchers Inc. was born in the 1960s when a homemaker (housewife) who had lost some weight and was concerned she might put it back on. So, she created a network of friends. Weight Watchers is a huge company, with branches all over the world.

Dieters can join either physically, and attend regular meetings, or online. In both cases there is a great deal of support and education available for the dieter.
6. South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet was started by a cardiologist, Dr. Agatston, and a nutritionist, Marie Almon.6

It focuses on the control of insulin levels, and the benefits of unrefined slow carbohydrates versus fast carbs. Dr. Agatston devised the South Beach Diet during the 1990s because he was disappointed with the low-fat, high-carb diet backed by the American Heart Association. He believed and found that low-fat regimes were not effective over the long term.
7. Raw Food Diet

The Raw Food Diet, or Raw Foodism, involves consuming foods and drinks which are not processed, are completely plant-based, and ideally organic.7

Raw foodists generally say that at least three-quarters of your food intake should consist of uncooked food. A significant number of raw foodists are also vegans – they do not eat or drink anything which is animal based.

There are four main types of raw foodists: raw vegetarians, raw vegans, raw omnivores, and raw carnivores.
8. Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean Diet is Southern European, and more specifically focuses on the nutritional habits of the people of Crete, Greece, and southern Italy. Nowadays, Spain, southern France, and Portugal are also included; even though Portugal does not touch the Mediterranean Sea.

The emphasis is on lots of plant foods, fresh fruits as dessert, beans, nuts, cereals, seeds, olive oil as the main source of dietary fats, cheese and yogurts are the main dairy foods, moderate amounts of fish and poultry, up to about four eggs per week, small amounts of red meat, and low/moderate amounts of wine.8

Up to one third of the Mediterranean diet consists of fat, with saturated fats not exceeding 8% of calorie intake.
Western diet can shorten your life

Tasnime Akbaraly, PhD, Inserm, Montpellier, France, and team carried out a study that found that the “Western Diet”, which is high in sweet and fried foods, raises a person’s risk of dying early. They published their findings in theAmerican Journal of Medicine.9

Dr. Akbaraly said “The impact of diet on specific age-related diseases has been studied extensively, but few investigations have adopted a more holistic approach to determine the association of diet with overall health at older ages. We examined whether diet, assessed in midlife, using dietary patterns and adherence to the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI), is associated with aging phenotypes, identified after a mean 16-year follow-up.”

The team found that study participants who strayed from the “Alternative Healthy Eating Index” had a considerably higher risk of cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular death.

Culled from http://hub201.com/qualities-of-a-good-girlfriend/

Good morning Nairalanders, the traffic in Lagos is just too much, imagine i woke up at 5am and got to work by 7am, lucky for me the boss never reach work.

Erm…Erm…*clears throat*, today am going to share with you guys qualities of a good girlfriend, the most important qualities you should consider are the qualities that make the relationship grow and add value to the both of you.

Different stroke for different folks, but these are the outstanding qualities that make a woman stand out in every man’s heart.

Check them out:

1. Humility

A good girlfriend is not boastful and does not blow her trumpet for her achievements to be recognised.

2. Respectful

A good girlfriend respects everybody that comes her way, no matter their age.

3. Trustworthy and loyal

A good girlfriend does not play games and she keeps her words. She is committed only to her man.

4. Encourages you

A good girlfriend is your best cheer leader. Even when you are wrong, she corrects you lovingly without being judgmental.

5. She is not materialistic

Money and other material possessions are not the most important factors for her. They make life easy and worthwhile though, but to her it is not a criteria and source of happiness.

6. Courteous to your family and friends

A good girlfriend is always ready to make the people you hold dearly comfortable.
Romance / Reasons Why Photographers Are Exceptionally Attractive by itseedris(m): 3:42pm On Apr 25, 2015

Source: http://hub201.com/photographers/
The concept of attractiveness is a fickle thing and is not easy to define. The most obvious aspect of attractiveness is, of course, physical appearance but it isn’t the only one nor is it even the most important one. I mean, take a look at Jack Nicholson. From the physical side of things, he looks nothing special. He isn’t handsome, athletic or anything physically special but he has got that certain something that makes him so successful with the ladies. There are numerous factors that can make one person more attractive than the other. In some cases, people pull through on mere confidence, other times it is their actions that make them attractive, but what about vocation? Could this be one of the factors?

Well, according to a study done on the University of Pennsylvania’s students by professor Scott Barry Kaufman, there is a clear distinction between attractiveness based on which creative vocation a person has. While being a musician (in various forms) tops the list, if you are a professional photographer, you’ll be happy to know that you are standing in the solid 7th position. Still, if we merged all the creative activities related to music into one universal position and removed sports which tops the charts (I mean come on, it’s not about creativity here, it’s about physical fitness), photographers would rank even higher. Buy why? What makes them so attractive? Well, there are more than a few things!

They see the beauty in everything

Photographers are always looking for new inspiration, at least the good ones are. Their eyes are constantly searching for that angle, the composition or lighting that will help them snap their next masterpiece. This indubitably transfers into their everyday lives, so even when they do not have their photos in mind, they will be more than inclined to point out the beauty of a particular scene they come across and change their partner’s perspective on things. A lot of people assume that photographers are focused on physical beauty but the really good ones can actually find beauty in anything and everyone! They find beauty in the harshest places and make them look stunning! This is a tremendous talent to have – to change how a person looks at the world.

They are creative people

Creativity radiates differently from one artist to another, as well as from one art form to another, but it always leaves a distinct mark on a personality the artist develops. There is simply a distinct approach to life that can attributed to creative souls universally and this is what sets them apart as unique. Photography is a good way to a distinct lifestyle, gives you a peculiar mind-set and to be honest, I don’t think that the lives of two photographers anywhere in the world are generally alike. With a few simple tips you can make your photos look great, but the originality and artistic values of the photos are goals that you really need to be a talented and dedicated professional to reach. It is just the general approach of documenting particular moments in time in an as beautiful way as possible, which gives them a unique vibe. Sure, we are all a bit into photography these days but not many are truly artists. The creativity trait often gives you advanced problem solving capabilities which are more than valuable in this art form and in life, in general.

They are usually nomads

This is at least true for the time that they are younger and just starting out. As a photographer, you like diversity in your living environment as well as your business environment. There are really a few other vocations that would allow you to travel so much as this one. Whether you are a band photographer, sports photographer, fashion photographer, you need to travel. It is simply in your job description. All people who travel a lot and come in contact with different cultures give off that cosmopolitan look and their stories about different cultures are quite enticing. This travel charisma is a big factor in their attractive image. They are capable of packing in a moment’s notice, but they do this by knowing how to prepare in advance. Although their lifestyle may seem wild and fast, they are very organized people. After all, the equipment costs quite a lot, so you can’t be too careful when packing so you don’t forget something that is valuable as well as a necessity to your work. Also, a lot of photographers speak more than one language and this is something that is universally attractive.

They are independent and free

The majority of photographers are freelancers, who very much have control over what kind of work they do and who they collaborate with. This kind of freedom usually stems from a healthy dose of confidence and also gives people an environment to solidify their trust in themselves. When you are flying solo, you need to be able to manage all the work you do yourself and every mistake you make actually affects your own bottom line. This breeds capable and responsible people who are capable of holding their own in a relationship, which is a much desired trait in a partner. A lot of them possess a certain dose of streetwise which they picked up from their travels. After all, photographers are often targets of street attacks in any country in the world, due to the relative compactness of their equipment and its high value. This means that you need to be on your toes and be wary of dangerous situations. This kind of mindset gives photographers the ability to project a sense of security to other people. Being able to think on your feet is quite appealing to both men and women as a very attractive trait to, well, both men and women.

They are always willing to meet new people

There have been more than a few meltdowns between partners caused by one sides disinterest in socialization and insistence on a more secluded lifestyle. This wouldn’t be the truth with people in this profession. Their line of work includes meeting and working with a lot of different people and they are very much adapted to diverse social environments and can always find a common topic for conversation with people of different backgrounds. Not everyone has the patience for meeting new people and not being able to adapt to somebodies circle of friends can sometimes be a deal breaker for some relationships. The fact that they fit in quite nicely and are generally liked by all gives them an edge. Moreover, these days, everyone wants to have good photos and people are generally a bit more pleasant towards those who can snap a great one on a whim. That was a joke – to some extent.

As you can see, there are tons of reasons why you might want to consider a professional career in photography. Still, a lot of people tend to get into it but underestimate the work and effort that you need to include in order really make it. It doesn’t just boil down to snapping a DSLR at things and people. There is a whole science and then there is the whole question of creativity and personal style. It takes years to practice and work to develop this craft to a professional level. The lifestyle is great but requires a lot of dedication and more than a few sacrifices.
