Many entertainment practitioners, through their visuals and scripts have been involved in the fight against terrorism which continues to bedevil the country. As many more continue to join the fold, one such writer who has been inspired to lend his support through writing is Sani Muhammad Surajudeen. Born and raised in the North, Sani knows how it is to live in fear of terrorists and it has served as the inspiration behind his writings.

Speaking with thebasement NG On Social Media, Sani disclosed that he had been writing since childhood and would spend hours inscribing letters on any surface he could lay his hands-on.

His passion would later translate into not less than three separate books. One of his works, ‘Roses in the desert’ highlights the destructive components of terrorism and the trauma that attends the experience in the hands of insurgents.

Particularly, the book centres on the two-year journey of two lovers separated by terrorism with each of them facing distinct challenges in the quest to be reunited. For the 24-year-old writer and graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, writing is not just an avenue to entertain, it should also be used to reflect the shortcomings of society.

“In as much as people are fascinated by stories, we writers have a duty to reflect issues that need attention in society.

“My book, ‘Roses in the desert’, does that and I believe I’m not just playing my part in the writing industry but also in nation-building at large,” Sani further stated.

The writer and poet also disclosed that more works should be expected from his stable, including a sequel to ‘Roses in the desert.

“When you go through ‘Roses in the desert’, you would realise that the story doesn’t end there. A sequel is on the way entitled ‘Thorns in the desert’ and it should be out by January 2021.

“Another separate work is ‘Before 30’. There are many more manuscripts waiting to be published and people should watch out.”

Mrs Gladys Osaigbovo-Omon, 60 years old and pictured below, narrowly escaped being assassinated at her residence in Benin-City, the Edo State Capital, a fortnight ago.

Yesterday, she was at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters, Ikeja, to see her suspected assasins get paraded.

Clad in a buba and wrapper and a pair of red slippers, she sat on a chair, hands clasped together as she kept shaking her legs slowly. At a point, she glanced at the two suspected assassins close to her, shook her head in disbelief before lifting it up to the sky and muttered, Osalobua uwese( meaning ‘God, thank you’, in Benin dialect).

Vanguard reports that when Mrs Gladys Osaigbovo-Omon was approached, she was too stunned to narrate what brought her from Benin city. All she could mutter in pidgin English was that the stab of a loved one could be so painful when compared to that of a stranger.

Two suspected assassins hired to eliminate the sexagenarian have been arrested by the Police in Lagos while efforts were still on to arrest the alleged mastermind, an Europe Based Nigerian woman. Surprisingly, the alleged mastermind turned out to be her younger sister while one of the suspected assassins was discovered to be her nephew.

GENESIS OF THE ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT:

Vanguard’s Crime Guard reports that 60-year-old Gladys, being the eldest of her siblings, assisted them in her own little way. One of her siblings, Augusta Osaigbovo, according to her, lived with her for 13 years until she left for Europe.

At a time, Gladys said she begged Augusta, to take one of her daughters, Mercy Omon, overseas, for better life, an offer that was granted.

However, on arriving the United Kingdom, Mercy contacted her family back in Nigeria to inform them that her aunty, Augusta, was a leader of a prostitution ring and had recruited her into prostitution in London.

But she claimed to have refused to bow to pressures from her aunty to go into prostitution, an action that led to a strained relationship between them. Along the line, Crime Guard gathered that Mercy was arrested by Police authorities in the UK, for possessing fake documents which were allegedly facilitated by her aunty.

She managed to wriggle her way out of trouble after disclosing that her aunty, Augusta, brought her to London with job promises, only to turn out to be something else. Her confession led to Augusta’s subsequent arrest and was thereafter jailed.

Assassination move

According to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Imohimi Edgal, who paraded the suspected assassins,

“When Augusta Osaigbovo finished her jail term, she complained to her sister Gladys, that her daughter, Mercy, whom she brought from the village to help, had ruined her.

Believing that her sister was supporting her daughter, she decided to hire the services of assassins to eliminate Gladys.

The first person allegedly contacted by Augusta, was her nephew, Osaro Okonoboh (44), whom the sexagenarian kept glancing at, in shock.

In an interview with Osaro, a commercial bus driver who resides in Lagos, he admitted to have been contacted by Augusta to snuff life out of his aunty, Gladys. He said:

“Aunty Gladys is my mother’s eldest sister. Aunty Augusta who stays abroad, my mother and aunty Gladys were born of the same mother. She (Augusta ) called me on phone that she would want me to help her kill aunty Gladys.

When I asked why, she said aunty Gladys was the one behind what Mercy did to her abroad. I told her I did not know of any assassin but that I would look for one.

“I contacted Lucky Oboh, who is also a driver, here in Lagos. He also said he would look for someone. He came back and said he had found someone, Igbinedion Ogbevon who demanded N1 million for the job.

When I called Augusta to inform her, I told her that the proposed assassin asked for N4.5 million”.

Osaro then gave the job of eliminating Mrs Gladys Osaigbovo- Omon to Igbinedion Ogbevon and Lucky Oboh. But Ogbevon, who also hails from Edo state, insisted on visiting the target’s home, in order to know where she lived and also to study the terrain.

Crime Guard gathered that on July 17, 2018 Osaro, Gladys’ nephew took the suspected hired assassin, Ogbevon on a visit to Gladys’ home in Benin City. An elated Gladys was said to have welcomed the visitors with a sumptuous meal and drinks, unaware that she was entertaining her assailants.

By the time her visitors announced their departure, she had brought another meal for them and insisted they must eat before hitting the road back to Lagos. That singular display of kindness and generosity saved Gladys’ life as it endeared her supposed killer’s heart towards her.

In an interview with Crime Guard, Ogbevon, narrated how he changed his mind and turned around to spill the beans that led to the arrest of Osaro and Lucky. He said:

“On our way back after the visit, I asked Osaro why he wanted his aunty killed. He said that was what he was contracted to do.

But in my mind I decided I was not going to do it because of the woman’s kindness, although I didn’t tell Osaro I was opting out. You needed to have seen the way the woman welcomed us and took pains to prepare food for us as if she had been expecting us.

I was really overfed. When I got home, I was troubled and had to open up to my uncle, who advised that I should first go back to the woman and tell her of the plan to kill her and thereafter report to the police.

I then went with my uncle to visit mummy ( Gladys) to tell her about the plan by Augusta and Osaro to eliminate her. From there, we informed the Police who advised I played along, until I was given part payment of N490,000.

I had to play along so that they would not contact another person”.

At this point, the sexagenarian exclaimed, ‘Osalobua’! ( My God!). Speaking in Pidgin English, she said:

“When they told me, I could not believe that my own family members would want me dead.

‘I don’t know why my sister, who stayed with me for 13 years wanted to do this to me. Had she succeeded nobody would have attributed it to her. Perhaps, she would have attended my burial.

But I thank God, she did not succeed. I thank the Police and every other person that God used to spare my life. My thanks also go to our father, the Oba of Benin who placed a curse on anyone who is tarnishing the image of the ancient city outside the country”.

many Kenyans have been left shocked as a 9-year-old girl gave birth at a Nairobi Hospital on Wednesday.

Photographs of the smiling minor breastfeeding the infant have been circulating online, although her identity cannot be revealed for legal reasons.

The more disturbing news is that it is the girl’s father who is responsible for the minor’s pregnancy.

It is unclear whether legal action will be taken against him for the callous act of paedophilia, which is illegal in Kenyan law.

The Sexual Offences Act and the Children’s Act both outlaw sexual contact with minors, defined in law as defilement.

“A person who commits an offence of defilement with a child aged eleven years or less shall upon conviction be sentenced to imprisonment for life. A person who commits an offence of defilement with a child between the age of twelve and fifteen years is liable upon conviction to imprisonment for a term of not less than twenty years. A person who commits an offence of defilement with a child between the age of sixteen and eighteen years is liable upon conviction to imprisonment for a term of not less than fifteen years,” reads the law in Section 8 sub-sections 2 to 4.

Although the Nation’s attempts to get clarification from the private city hospital have not yet borne fruit, the incident seems to be only the latest in a string of minors experiencing pregnancies.

Last month, the country was jolted by news of at least nine teenage students at a local secondary school in Nyamira County who have been found pregnant under unclear circumstances.

It was suspected the girls, who are learners at Matutu PAG Mixed Secondary School, became pregnant between April and June 2018.

No arrests have been made in regard to the defilement of the minors that led to the pregnancies.

Trump who claims not to watch CNN, happened to be watching CNN late last night and caught an interview between Don Lemon and LeBron James, then tweeted that LeBron is dumb. He wrote;

“LeBron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon. He made LeBron look smart, which isn’t easy to do. I like Mike!”

On Saturday however, Melania Trump’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, released a statement saying Melania Trump would consider visiting the facility as part of her “Be Best” initiative aimed at improving the lives of children. Grisham said;

“It looks like LeBron James is working to do good things on behalf of our next generation and just as she always has, the First Lady encourages everyone to have an open dialogue about issues facing children today.”

Also singing James’s praises is former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who said in a tweet that James is

Jude Okoye of the defunct P-Square music group has said he did not sacrifice his career for the group.

He made this known while making further revelations about his career, after recently revealing he once slept under a bridge in Lagos.

Giving further details to Sunday Scoop, Jude Okoye said;

“I had my first album done in Jos in 1995 and all the friends around me told me that it was good and record labels would pay me good money for it. As a result of that, I took a flight of N2000 from Jos to Lagos in search of a record label that would pay me for the album. I went with two empty Ghana-must-go bags because I expected that they would pay me a lot of money.

Even though I didn’t know anybody there, I went to Ivory Music to see the talent manager. But when I got to the company, they told me that he was on leave and I would have to come back the next week. That’s when reality dawned on me because I hadn’t planned on how I was going to get back to Jos. From there, I went to the Ijora motor park hoping to take a bus back to Jos. On getting there, I found out that the bus fare was N600. I didn’t have that money so I ended up sleeping under the bridge. Being that my mother was a prophetess in Jos; once in a while, I ran into people who knew her and they gave me some money.

From there, I was able to get an attachment bus ticket, which meant I had to stand all through the trip from Lagos to Jos. After that experience, I still went back to Ivory Music two months after. It was then I met Zaaki Azzay and he shared his experience with me. The songs on my album were purely hip hop and he advised me to infuse some Nigerian flavour into it to make it more marketable.

When I eventually met the talent manager, a certain Mr. Morgan, he collected the tape and told me to come back in two weeks’ time. Meanwhile, I didn’t have a place to stay for that period so I had to squat at Bright Chimezie’s boys’ quarters with his friends at Ogba area of the state. When I went back to Mr. Morgan after two weeks, he didn’t recognise me. At that point, I was frustrated and I told them to give me back my tape. Still, I didn’t give up and I released my songs in Jos.

I became a local champion because the songs were popular then. From there, I decided that maybe a music career wasn’t meant for me and I focused on my kid brothers. Then, they were just dancers and weren’t known as P-Square. I wouldn’t say I sacrificed my career for them because it wasn’t working for me anyway.”

Two of the 14 senators who have defected from the ruling APC to the opposition party, Senator Isa Misau (Bauchi-Central) and Senator Rafiu Ibrahim (Kwara-South), in a statement they jointly issued on Saturday, warned the Katsina senator and “his fellow travellers” in the APC not to foment any trouble when the Senate resumes on September 25.

The senators stated that “Saraki will never resign from the position.”
Misau and Ibrahim were reacting to an interview granted by the Katsina senator, stating that Abu Ibrahim and his colleagues would “meet their match if they try anything illegal even with all the deployment of security forces which they might have been assured of by the executive arm of government.”

Ibrahim is a member of the Parliamentary Support Group, a group of APC senators loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari, while Misau and Rafiu Ibrahim are known allies of Saraki.
The lawmakers said, “It is obvious from the statements of Abu Ibrahim that he and his cohorts are not democrats. They do not believe in the rule of law, the provisions of the constitution, the Standing Order of the Senate, parliamentary procedure and the due process.

“How will a supposed democrat be threatening to disrupt the peace in the parliament because his party lost members and lost its majority status?”
Misau and Ibrahim asked APC senators to note that they were now the minority party.

Tech giant Apple becomes world’s first trillion-dollar company.

The company achieved this feat on Thursday, as a rise in its share price pushed it past the landmark before its closest rival for the honour, retail giant Amazon.


The iMac to iPhone company, co-founded to sell personal computers by the late Steve Jobs in 1976, reached the historic milestone as its shares hit $207.05, the day after it posted strong financial results. Apple’s share price has grown 2,000% since Tim Cook replaced Jobs at chief executive in 2011.

The company hit a $1tn market capitalisation 42 years after it was founded and 117 years after US Steel became the first company to be valued at $1bn in 1901.

The rise in its share price came thanks to quarterly financial results released on Tuesday that proved better than Wall Street had expected.

“We all believe in Apple and their ability to take the world by storm, but we never thought it would come so soon” a techie in Silicon Valley said

The tech giant racked up profits of $11.5bn in three months on the back of record sales that hit $53.3bn, pushing shares of the iPhone giant higher and easing the value of the company up from $935bn towards the $1tn (£770bn) mark.

“Growth was strong all around the world,” Apple’s finance chief, Luca Maestri, said.

WhatsApp now has a special feature, which now brings it to par with other major messaging apps: group video calls.

WhatsApp finally introduces group video chat

The app is now starting to add group video calling to its iOS and Android app, the company announced Monday. WhatsApp has supported video calling since 2016, but calls were, until now, limited to two participants. With the latest change, the app is upping its support to four total participants.

That’s a fairly modest increase, particularly compared to other services. Facebook Messenger supports group video calls of up to 50, while Snapchat supports 16 participants. Apple’s FaceTime will work with up to 32 people when iOS 12 launches later this year.

But the feature is likely more challenging for WhatsApp than some of its competitors. Its video calls, like other messages sent within the app, are end-to-end encrypted by default, for one thing. The company also needs to ensure new features are optimized for people with slower connections and older devices.


Once the feature is live, you can start making group video calls within the app by taping on the new “add participant” option in the top right corner of the screen while you’re video chatting.

The company made the announcement in a blog post on Tuesday reads;

“Over the last couple of years, people have enjoyed making voice and video calls on WhatsApp. In fact, our users spend over 2 billion minutes on calls per day. We’re excited to announce that group calls for voice and video are coming to WhatsApp starting today.

“You can make a group call with up to four people total – anytime and anywhere. Just start a one-on-one voice or video call and tap the new “add participant” button in the top right corner to add more contacts to the call.

“Group calls are always end-to-end encrypted, and we’ve designed calling to work reliably around the world in different network conditions. The feature is currently rolling out on the iPhone and Android versions of our app.”

Saudi Arabia couple arrested for kissing during driving lesson.

A couple in Saudi Arabia have been arrested after the man kissed the woman then posted footage of it on social media.

It was captioned ‘teaching her how to drive’ then posted on Snapchat, but the incident has landed them in trouble.

Saudi Arabia has only just started allowing women to drive with the first group only receiving their licences in June this year.

The move was seen as part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s far-reaching liberalisation drive as he seeks to modernise the conservative state.

However, following the kiss in the car, this couple now face jail in the ultra-conservative country.
