Culture / Benin, Edo: Legends, Myths, Stories, History... by ivineva: 9:56am On Feb 20, 2016
Hi everyone,

I would like to hear the stories, legends, myths and tales you were told (as a child) about the Benin Empire / Benin City / Edo.
Ultimate goal is to write up/illustrate these for my children, and my children's children, to read, love and start a tradition of keeping this in our family.

I heard the story of how the Great Walls of Benin and the Benin Moat was made by a giant coming out of the river and "scraped" his one foot around the Kingdom of Benin as to protect it from any that want to harm it. Stories like that is what I am looking for.

Hopefully some of you can help me with this? It would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

of what part you did not understand in what he replied to your question? Initial you said you don't understandd those words and you got the answer now, if I may ask, what are you trying to prove, ever since this Edo and yoruba issued came you guys it trying to fool youself. Please I beg you in the name of almighty God you guys stay off Edo state matter

Uhm.... I know small about the matter you speak of, but to be clear: that was not my response you replied this rant to. My own was a simple question for translation, which @bokohalal helped with...and for which I said thanks smiley I'm Dutch and I wanted a translation from independent source cheesy

But on the other hand, if someone has an interest in the language and ask a normal question, why react in this way? Nobody spoke of the Edo/Yoruba matter, is you that is dragging in to this... which is fine, but some respect for others might go a long way.

Ego and owo are not Edo terms for money. The one, only and correct way of saying MONEY in Edo is IGHO.
IWINOSA= GOD'S HANDIWORK

IRENE= I HAVE COME

OSAIVBIE= GOD DOES NOT SLEEP

TWINS = IVINEVA

GRANDMOTHER = IYENOKHUA

FAMILY = EGBE ( USUALLY ), OGBE

MOTHER OF TWINS = IYE-IVINEVA

HOUSE = OWA

Thank you so much! This answered all my question ☺
