CrimeAgain, Bandits Kill Five Forest Guards In Kwara Community by iwaeda(op): 12:22pm On Apr 10
Suspected bandits have again struck in Kwara State, killing five forest guards during a fresh attack on Nuku village in Kaiama Local Government Area in the early hours of Friday.

The assailants reportedly stormed the community at about 3:00 a.m., shooting sporadically and throwing residents into panic as they unleashed violence on the settlement.

A community source, who spoke to PUNCH Online on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, said the attackers arrived in large numbers and operated for hours without resistance.

The source said, “They entered through their usual route in large numbers in the early hours of today, April 10, 2026, at Nuku.

“They started shooting directly and, within a short time, killed several innocent people, including the newly recruited forest guards.”

In addition to the loss of lives, several properties were destroyed during the assault.

“The motorcycles belonging to the forest guards were set ablaze, while patrol vehicles operated by the mobile police were also burnt,” the source added.

The Kwara State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement as of the time of filing this report.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the command, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, told our correspondent that she did not have details of the attack but promised to provide updates when more information becomes available.

“I have not been briefed about the incident, but I will get back to you as soon as I have information,” she said.

The latest killings have heightened fear among residents, many of whom continue to express concern over the deteriorating security situation in the area.

The attack comes barely two months after a deadly assault on Woro and neighbouring Nuku communities in the same local government area, where over 200 people were reportedly killed, and about 176 others abducted, including women and children.

Fresh anxiety has also been triggered by the emergence of a new video on Thursday showing abducted villagers from Woro and surrounding communities, with victims making desperate appeals for government intervention.

“We are begging you, this is our last opportunity. We have been here since February 3. Please, come to our rescue.

“We have small children with us and some women are pregnant,” another captive added in Yoruba. “Please, Kwara State Government, Oyo State Government, help us. This is the last chance they gave us,” ” a young woman in the footage dated April 8 said in English.

In the background of the video, one of the armed men claimed responsibility for the abduction while attempting to justify the act.

“We are the ones who kidnapped them. They have been begging us, and we have given them this opportunity so their government can hear from them,” he said.

Earlier footage released in February had shown rows of women and children surrounded by armed men, with some of the captives confirming they were taken from Woro and Kaiama in Kwara State.

“They said those abducted were about 25 or 30. Let them look here. Ask them how many they are,” one of the gunmen had said in Hausa.

“We are 174,” some of the women responded, although other segments suggested the number could be as high as 176.

Reacting to the development at the time, the Kwara State Government expressed concern over the videos and reassured residents of intensified rescue efforts.

“The Kwara State Government is deeply concerned over the disturbing video allegedly showing persons abducted during the February 3 attack,” the Commissioner for Communications, Mrs Bolanle Olukoju, said in a statement.

Olukoju said, “Our thoughts are with all the families affected, and we reaffirm our commitment to securing the safe return of all those impacted.”

She, however, cautioned against speculation on the exact number of abducted persons, noting that conflicting reports from affected communities had made verification difficult.

“For this reason, neither the state government nor security agencies have announced a definitive figure. Our priority remains the safe rescue of every affected citizen,” she added.

Despite these assurances, residents say the renewed attack on Nuku underscores the persistent vulnerability of rural communities in the area, as families of abducted victims continue to wait anxiously for their loved ones’ return.

PoliticsDavid Mark Asks Court To Overturn Inec’s Derecognition Of His ADC Leadership by iwaeda(op): 12:18am On Apr 10
David Mark, factional national chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has asked a federal high court in Abuja to overturn the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to derecognise his leadership of the party.

In a motion filed before Emeka Nwite, the presiding judge, Mark is seeking orders compelling INEC to restore his name and that of Rauf Aregbesola as national chairman and national secretary of the party, respectively.

INEC had, on April 1, removed the names of Mark and Aregbesola from its portal, effectively withdrawing recognition of the party’s national working committee (NWC).

The commission also stated that it would no longer recognise any of the ADC factions, including that of Nafiu Bala, following its review of a judgement of the court of appeal.

Through his lawyer, Sulaiman Usman, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mark is asking the court to set aside INEC’s refusal to monitor the party’s congresses and convention pending the determination of the suit.

He is further seeking an order restraining the electoral body from recognising any rival leadership or altering the ADC’s records until the case is decided.

Usman argued that INEC misinterpreted an earlier ruling of the court of appeal delivered on March 12, which directed parties to maintain the “status quo ante bellum.”

“The ‘status quo ante bellum’ refers to the last lawful, uncontested state of affairs prior to the institution of the suit,” the lawyer said.

He added that as of September 2, 2025, when the suit was filed, Mark was the recognised national chairman of the ADC, and the leadership structure was already in place.

According to him, INEC’s decision to remove the ADC leadership created uncertainty within the party and undermined the subject matter of the case.

“The law is settled that a mandatory injunction may be granted at an interlocutory stage to restore a party to the position wrongfully altered,” the lawyer said.

“This is a proper case for the exercise of the equitable jurisdiction of this honourable court.”

Mark is also seeking an accelerated hearing of the suit, urging the court to abridge the time for filing processes and to hear the matter on a day-to-day basis.

His lawyer argued that the dispute has significant implications for the internal administration of the party and broader democratic participation.

“The present uncertainty surrounding the leadership of ADC is affecting its internal administration, impeding its participation in political activities and creating avoidable institutional confusion,” he said.

The suit follows a leadership dispute within the ADC.

Nafiu Bala, a former deputy national chairman of the party, had filed the case marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025, challenging the legitimacy of the Mark-led leadership.

In September 2025, Nwite declined to grant an ex parte application seeking to stop the leadership and instead directed that all parties be put on notice.

Dissatisfied, the Mark-led leadership approached the appellate court, which ordered parties to return to the trial court and maintain the existing state of affairs pending the determination of the suit.

Bala had joined the ADC, Mark, Aregbesola, INEC, and Ralph Nwosu, a former national chairman of the party, as defendants in the case.

Jihadists in northeast Nigeria killed several troops including a brigadier general in an assault on a military base, local government and intelligence sources told AFP on Thursday, the second killing of a high-ranking officer in five months.

Violence is surging across the country’s mostly Muslim north, with at least 90 people killed by gunmen in several remote villages since Sunday night, according to an AFP tally of tolls given by local, humanitarian and church sources.

Africa’s most populous country has been fighting a jihadist insurgency for 17 years, since Boko Haram’s 2009 uprising, which has seen the emergence of powerful splinter groups including Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Four sources, including the military confirmed the overnight attack, with one intelligence source putting the death toll at 18.

Unidentified jihadists overran the military base, killed 18 soldiers and torched vehicles in Benisheikh, about 75 kilometres (47 miles) from Borno state capital Maiduguri, an intelligence source told AFP.

“Unfortunately, the brigade commander, Brigadier General O.O. Braimah, lost his life,” Kaga local government chairman, Zannah Lawan Ajimi told AFP on the phone.

Two intelligence sources confirmed Braimah’s death to AFP.

His death follows the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba by ISWAP in November. He was the highest-ranking military official to die in the long-running conflict since 2021.

“They overran the brigade,” one of the intelligence sources said, giving the death toll as “at least” 18.

The second intelligence source said that “the terrorists killed several troops” and “burnt vehicles and buildings before they withdrew”, without giving a toll.

Nigeria’s military said that “insurgents attempted to breach the defensive perimeter of the military installation” but were “decisively engaged and forced to retreat in disarray”.

The statement, from Major General Michael Onoja, a defence headquarters spokesman, said that the attack “resulted in the loss of a few brave and gallant soldiers”, without disclosing a toll or who was killed.

– Rising jihadist violence –
Researchers have warned of an uptick in violence since last year.

Borno capital Maiduguri has seen two suicide bombings since December — the type of bloody, urban attacks reminiscent of the insurgency’s peak a decade ago.

On Wednesday, the US State Department said in a notice it was authorising “non-emergency US government employees” to leave Abuja “due to the deteriorating security situation”.

While the insurgency is concentrated in the northeastern countryside, jihadists from Nigeria and the neighbouring Sahel have made inroads in western Nigeria, where organised crime gangs known as “bandits” have been raiding villages and extorting farmers and artisanal miners for years.

The spate of attacks that has left 90 dead this week included an assault in Kebbi state that police blamed on a local jihadist group known as Mahmuda, which is affiliated with Al-Qaeda.

Other assaults included those blamed on bandits, which the Christian Association of Nigeria said launched raids “from one village to the next” over three days, without military intervention.

Father Illah Vincent Iko, CAN coordinator for Shanga area in Kebbi, said there were at least 1,900 people displaced by the attacks.

Kebbi sits on Nigeria’s border with Benin and Niger and since 2025 has been targeted by a rising number of jihadist attacks.

Conflict monitor ACLED says there has been a surge in violence in the area carried out by militants affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.

In nearby Kwara state, in October, fighters from the Al-Qaeda-affiliated JNIM claimed an attack after years of researchers warning that the jihadist conflict ravaging the Sahel risked spreading south towards coastal west African states.

In December, the United States, with Nigerian assistance, bombed northwest Sokoto state, targeting Islamic State Sahel Province (ISSP) fighters usually found in neighbouring Niger, along with Mali and Burkina Faso.

Earlier this year, the United States began deploying 200 troops to Nigeria to provide technical and training support to the country’s soldiers in fighting jihadist groups.
