PoliticsBishop Kukah Laments Insecurity, Urges Urgent Action by iwaeda(op): 9:42am On Apr 05
The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, has warned that Nigeria is drifting dangerously amid what he described as “endless turbulence,” cautioning that the country could slide into a deeper crisis if urgent steps are not taken to restore trust, security, and good governance.

In his 2026 Easter message issued on Sunday and titled Faith and Hope in Times of Turbulence, Kukah painted a grim picture of a nation weighed down by insecurity, economic hardship, and leadership challenges.

“Turbulence is Nigeria’s surname,” the cleric declared, describing the country as one trapped in a cycle of instability worsened by what he called “self-generated turbulence by the local elites.”

He said the worsening security situation had spiralled into a humanitarian crisis, with thousands killed, millions displaced, and several communities devastated by violence.

“After over 20 years and well over 20,000 corpses, the grim harvester still roams freely across the country,” he said.

“For now, our nation has become what the late Pope Francis referred to as a field hospital.”

Kukah warned that growing distrust in the military and other government institutions was pushing desperate citizens into dangerous alliances, including collaboration with criminal elements.

“Years of fatigue have lured ordinary citizens into the treacherous embrace of bandits,” he said, noting that some individuals now serve as informants, thereby “trading the future of their families and communities.”

Addressing governance issues, Kukah accused Nigeria’s political elite of failing to fulfil campaign promises, leaving millions of citizens in poverty and many young people without hope for a better future.

“The Nigerian landscape is still riddled with unredeemed promissory notes,” he said.

“Unemployment is smothering the dreams of young people in the cradles of their hope.”

He criticised short-term relief interventions, arguing that such measures reflected deeper systemic failures in governance and planning.

“Merely distributing food is an admission of the failure of our nation to develop robust and aggressive agricultural plans capable of ending hunger,” he said.

Despite the bleak outlook, Kukah urged Nigerians, particularly Christians, not to give in to despair but to remain steadfast in faith and moral responsibility.

“We may be struck down, but we cannot be destroyed,” he said, while emphasising the need to strike a balance between the right to self-defence and the pursuit of peace.

He also urged citizens to play active roles in rebuilding the country, rather than assigning blame solely to leaders.

“It is a great mistake for us to ignore what role each and every one of us can play,” he said.

“Let us not surrender to despair, as we could become guilty bystanders.”

Drawing on biblical imagery, the cleric expressed optimism that Nigeria could overcome its present challenges through faith, unity, and collective action.

“The boat of our nation is threatening to sink, yet even in his sleep, he is awake to command the storm to be still,” he said.

He concluded with a call for both prayer and practical action towards national renewal.

“We pray but must also work hard, believing that the walls created by war and division will ultimately fall,” he added.

The message comes as Nigerians celebrate Easter amid persistent security concerns, rising cost of living, and growing worries about national unity and stability.

CrimeBandits Kill Five Residents, Three Soldiers, Abduct Women And Children In Kwara by iwaeda(op): 3:34pm On Apr 03
SaharaReporters gathered that the deadly incident occurred on Thursday when heavily armed assailants stormed the rural settlements, unleashing terror on residents and forcing many to flee into surrounding bushes for safety.

At least five residents, including three soldiers, have been killed in a coordinated and bloody attack by suspected bandits on the twin communities of Mari and Dina in Patigi Local Government Area on Kwara State.

SaharaReporters gathered that the deadly incident occurred on Thursday when heavily armed assailants stormed the rural settlements, unleashing terror on residents and forcing many to flee into surrounding bushes for safety.

According to local sources familiar with the attack, the bandits invaded Mari and Dina villages in large numbers, firing indiscriminately and creating panic among villagers who were caught unprepared for the onslaught.

A source told SaharaReporters that at least five villagers were confirmed killed during the raid, while several others sustained varying degrees of gunshot wounds and injuries as they attempted to escape the violence.

“People were running helter-skelter when the bandits started shooting sporadically. Some of the victims were hit by bullets while trying to flee into nearby bushes. It was a terrifying situation because nobody knew where the next gunshot would come from,” the source said.

The attackers reportedly abducted several residents, including women and children, and forcefully marched them into the forest, leaving families in anguish over the fate of their loved ones.

“The bandits operated for hour. They took many women and children away with them. As we speak, their whereabouts remain unknown,” another source disclosed.

Upon receiving distress calls from the affected communities, the Forward Operational Base (FOB) in Patigi was alerted to the ongoing attack.

In a swift response, a team of military personnel was mobilised to the scene in a bid to repel the attackers and rescue the kidnapped victims.

However, the bandits had reportedly laid a calculated and sophisticated ambush along the route taken by the reinforcement team.

During the intense gun battle that followed, three soldiers were killed in the line of duty while attempting to confront the assailants.

“The soldiers moved in to rescue the villagers but the bandits had already positioned themselves strategically. It was a deadly ambush. The attackers opened heavy fire on the troops,” the source explained.

The bandits also reportedly set ablaze a military patrol vehicle during the confrontation, reducing it to ashes and further complicating rescue efforts.

Eyewitnesses described the attack as highly coordinated, suggesting that the assailants had prior knowledge of the terrain and movements of security operatives.

Residents of the affected communities have expressed fear over the increasing frequency of bandit attacks in the area, calling on security agencies and government authorities to intensify efforts to protect lives and property.

“This is becoming too much for us. People can no longer sleep with both eyes closed. We are appealing to the government to deploy more security personnel to this area before more lives are lost,” a community member lamented.

As of the time of filing this report, efforts to reach military authorities for official confirmation of the casualties were unsuccessful.

PoliticsDavid Mark To Tinubu: You Have Over 30 Governors In APC, What Are You Afraid Of? by iwaeda(op): 8:15pm On Apr 02
National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, has asked President Bola Tinubu to explain why he is allegedly afraid despite having over 30 governors in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking at a press conference where the opposition coalition announced its displeasure with the removal of some ADC leaders from the portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mark who was flanked by other leaders of the party alleged that there was a plot to foist one-party state on Nigerians.

Mark, a former Senate President, called on Nigerians to defend democracy, “Stand firm. Speak out. Participate. Resist any attempt to impose a one-party state on Nigeria”.

“Since 1999, Nigeria has been under democratic rule. After 27 years, we thought we could proudly celebrate the entrenchment of democracy, believing that the country’s dictatorial past has receded into history.”

“Our experience in the past three years or so since President Bola Tinubu came to power has however confirmed otherwise. Democracy is only sustained by the quality of freedom that it offers and guarantees, especially the freedom to choose, the freedom to participate, and the freedom to associate. These freedoms are so critical to democracy that without them, democracy dies.

“Yet, in the past three years, we have witnessed a relentless assault on these very freedoms. The agenda is very clear, to create a situation where, in 2027, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerges as the only option left for the people, despite the widespread suffering and wanton killings going on across the country. The twin challenge of deepening poverty, and worsening security situation in the country did not just happen. They are direct consequences of the failure of this government. They know that Nigerians will not want this to continue. They know Nigerians will vote them out. This is why they would do anything to hang on to power by hook or crook.

“In the past couple of months, ADC has become the only viable opposition party left in Nigeria. But this APC government does not want any opposition. While we were fully aware of all their desperate plans, we remained confident that no level of desperation would have driven the government and the INEC to take a direct action against the ruling of the court. But we were wrong.

“It was therefore to our surprise, yesterday, 1st of April, that INEC issued a press statement after the close of business hours, announcing that it had decided to withdraw recognition for both the ADC leadership, which I head, and the fictitious one purportedly led by Nafiu Bala, thereby creating a false equivalence between the parties.

By purporting to recognizing Nafiu Bala as a faction, INEC seems to have conveniently forgotten that this individual had resigned his position, to the knowledge of INEC itself.

Addressing the president directly, Mark said, “I speak to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: with 90% of the National Assembly and over 30 of Nigeria’s 36 Governors in the APC, President Tinubu, what are you afraid of?

If you are convinced that you have done well for the people who voted for you, why are you afraid of a free, fair, and transparent electoral contest? If you are indeed the democrat that you claim to be, why are you bent on destroying all opposition political parties?”
