Crime › Nemesio Oseguera: Mexican Army Kills ‘El Mencho’ World’s Most Wanted Drug Lord by iwaeda(op): 8:36pm On Feb 22 |
Soldiers on Sunday killed a powerful Mexican drug cartel leader who was one of the most wanted men here and in the United States, several media outlets reported.
There was no immediate confirmation from the government of the death of Nemesio Oseguera, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. He had a $15 million bounty on his head.
Oseguera is one of the biggest drug suspects to be taken down since the capture of the founders of the Sinaloa cartel, Joaquin Guzman ‘El Chapo’ and Ismael Zambada. Both are serving time in the United States.
Oseguera, whose nickname was “El Mencho,” was reported killed by the Mexican newspapers El Universal and Reforma, and by the Televisa network.
Earlier, people with guns set cars and trucks on fire in the western state of Jalisco, blocking several roads in response to a security operation taking place in the region.
This technique is used to thwart police trying to move in on a high-value target.
The violence spread to the neighbouring state of Michoacan, where Oseguera’s cartel also has a presence.
His cartel was formed in 2009 and became one of Mexico’s most violent drug trafficking organisations, according to the US Justice Department.
US officials formally classified it as a terrorist organisation and accused the cartel of sending cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl from Mexico across the border into the United States.

Politics › Lagos Denies Resuming Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise by iwaeda(op): 8:12pm On Feb 21 |
The Lagos State Government on Saturday refuted an online media report claiming that the state had resumed the monthly environmental sanitation exercise. The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, said no categorical statement had been made regarding the commencement date of the exercise. Wahab explained that what he told newsmen after a project inspection tour last Sunday was that engagements with relevant stakeholders were still ongoing. He said the state government had planned to begin with a sensitisation programme last week, but was constrained by logistics issues. Cleric Refutes Allegations Linking Alfas to Iya Ọ̀ṣun’s Ilorin House Fire0:00 / 1:01 “The truth is, we were meant to start with a sensitisation programme last week, but we had a logistics issue. We need to find a day that is acceptable to all stakeholders,” he said. He expressed optimism that the exercise might return very soon, adding that the official date would be communicated by the Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The commissioner urged law-abiding residents to continue their lawful activities without hindrance, assuring them that adequate notice would be given before the exercise was reintroduced. The monthly environmental sanitation, previously held on the last Saturday of every month between 7.00 a.m. and 10.00 a.m., was suspended in November 2016 following a legal pronouncement restricting movement during the exercise. However, renewed waste management challenges, including clogged drainage channels and indiscriminate refuse disposal, have sparked calls from residents for its reinstatement. Politics › FCT Poll: AEDC Postpones Planned Maintenance by iwaeda(op): 10:04pm On Feb 20 |
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company has suspended its previously scheduled maintenance exercise after facing widespread criticism from residents and electricity consumers in parts of the Federal Capital Territory and neighbouring communities. The maintenance, initially slated for Saturday, sparked concerns due to its timing, as it coincides with the forthcoming FCT Area Council elections. Many customers had faulted the planned outage, warning it could disrupt businesses, electoral preparations and other essential services on the eve of the polls. According to a notice via its official X handle on Friday, AEDC said it promptly engaged the Transmission Company of Nigeria to reassess the situation and TCN subsequently agreed to defer the exercise. The company stated that the maintenance has been postponed to a later date yet to be announced following the concerns raised by its customers. The areas earlier listed to be affected by the outage include parts of Mpape; the entire Bwari, Jere and Jiwa; parts of Jahi, Karimo and Idu; parts of Suleja and its environs; the Charlay Boy area of Gwarinpa; as well as parts of Dawaki, News Engineering, France Engineering and surrounding communities. “Following the concerns of our customers, AEDC has engaged TCN and TCN has subsequently postponed the earlier announced maintenance exercise scheduled for tomorrow,”the notice read. The company thanked its customers for their feedback, noting that the decision to suspend the maintenance was taken in response to public concerns. “We sincerely appreciate your feedback and thank you for your understanding during this necessary activity. We remain committed to our goal of continuously enhancing service reliability and serving you better,” the statement added. AEDC also advised customers to reach its customer care lines for further updates, assuring residents that a new date for the maintenance will be communicated in due course. https://punchng.com/fct-poll-aedc-postpones-planned-maintenance/ |

Politics › Police Arrest Okoi Obono-Obla For Certificate Forgery by iwaeda(op): 1:40pm On Feb 20 |
The police command in Cross River says its operatives have arrested Okoi Obono-Obla, a former presidential adviser, over allegations of forgery and obtaining entry into the legal profession by false pretence.
In a statement on Thursday, Eitokpah Sunday, Cross River police spokesperson, said Obono-Obla was “lawfully arrested” on Thursday around Abuja Park, Ugep town, in Cross River state.
Sunday said the arrest was sequel to a petition submitted to the state commissioner of police over allegations bordering on “forgery and obtaining admission or professional qualification/entry into the legal profession by false pretence”.
The police spokesperson dismissed claims that the ex-presidential adviser was kidnapped by unidentified security operatives.
“The arrest was effected in accordance with extant laws and in the exercise of the constitutional and statutory powers of the Nigeria Police Force to investigate allegations of criminal conduct,” the statement reads.
“Following his arrest, he was conveyed to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Calabar, where investigation is currently ongoing.
“His legal counsel has been duly notified and is fully participating in the process. His relatives are also aware of his current location.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Command categorically states that allegations of kidnapping or involvement of unidentified security outfits are false, unfounded, and entirely without factual basis.”
In 2016, then-President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Obono-Obla as the special assistant to the president (prosecution), federal ministry of justice. He also served as chairman of the special presidential investigation panel for the recovery of public property (SPIP).
In August 2019, Buhari suspended Obono-Obla as chairman of the panel following investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over alleged falsification of records and financial impropriety.
In October 2019, ICPC declared him wanted over “repeated failure to appear before it to answer questions bordering on allegations of fraud and corruption”. In March 2020, the former presidential aide was arrested by ICPC in Abuja.
In March 2021, ICPC rearraigned Obono-Obla over alleged N10.1 million fraud.
In October 2021, ICPC again rearraigned him over charges bordering on alleged falsification and forgery of school results.
ICPC had accused him of forging O’Level results to study law in the 1985/86 academic session in the University of Jos (UNIJOS). https://www.thecable.ng/police-arrest-ex-presidential-aide-obono-obla-over-alleged-certificate-forgery/
