Politics › Kwara Attack: Shettima Visits Woro Village Following Deadly Attack by iwaeda(op): 1:18pm On Feb 07 |
Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Kwara State on Saturday to visit Woro village in Kaiama Local Government Area following a deadly attack that left 75 residents dead. According to a statement shared by his media aide, Stany Nkwocha, Shettima’s visit came at the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Nkwocha said, “The President has directed that the vice president assess the situation firsthand and convey federal condolences to the grieving families.” The vice president was received by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and other state officials upon arrival. The governor had earlier described the victims as local Muslims “massacred for refusing to submit to extremists preaching a strange doctrine,” while initial reports suggested over 100 fatalities. The attack, which occurred on Tuesday night, reportedly followed a rejected attempt by militants to forcibly indoctrinate members of the community. Earlier, Shettima’s media aide also revealed that the vice president, who departed Abuja on Saturday, was conveying President Tinubu’s assurances that the Federal Government would ensure justice for the victims. “VP Shettima is conveying President Tinubu’s strong assurances that the Federal Government will not relent until those responsible are tracked, apprehended, and brought to justice,” Nkwocha said. President Tinubu had earlier condemned the attacks on Woro and Nuku communities, describing the assailants’ actions as “cowardly and beastly,” and assured that military operations were already underway to apprehend the perpetrators. He confirmed the deployment of an Army battalion under Operation Savannah Shield, tasked to “checkmate these barbaric terrorists and protect defenceless communities.” The President also called for closer collaboration between federal and state agencies to provide relief to victims and ensure the attackers face justice. https://punchng.com/just-in-shettima-visits-kwara-after-deadly-attack/ |

UN Secretary-General Guterres Condemns Terrorists Attack In Nigeria, Killing Of Over 170 Kwara Residents
The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has strongly condemned the deadly terrorist attacks in Kwara State that left at least 170 people dead.
The attack occurred on Tuesday when armed terrorists invaded Woro community in the Kaiama Local Government Area of the state.
The terrorists killed no fewer than 170 residents during the onslaught, injured dozens, while several others are said to be missing in the aftermath of the violence.
Residents accused Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration of ignoring repeated distress calls and security warnings months before the terrorists stormed the area and massacred the people.
Reacting to the incident, the UN chief, Guterres, in a statement released on Thursday by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, expressed deep sympathy with the victims and reaffirmed the UN’s support for Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.
“The Secretary-General conveys his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and Government of Nigeria. He wishes a speedy recovery to the injured,” the statement read.
The UN chief also reiterated the organisation’s commitment to standing with Nigeria against terrorism and violent extremism, stressing the need for accountability.
“The Secretary-General reiterates the solidarity of the United Nations with the Government and people of Nigeria in their efforts to fight terrorism and violent extremism and stresses the importance of bringing the perpetrators to justice,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, multiple residents who spoke to SaharaReporters on Thursday said community members had consistently alerted traditional authorities, local government officials and the state government about the suspicious movement of armed strangers and their presence in nearby forests, but no meaningful action was taken.
According to two residents who spoke separately to SaharaReporters, youths in Kaiama had raised the alarm on several occasions after noticing unfamiliar armed men camping in bushes surrounding their communities.
“Before these attacks happened, our youths went to the traditional ruler many times to report that strange people were gathering inside the forest close to our villages,” one resident said.
“They did not only stop there. They also informed the local government council and the state government. Everybody knew, but nobody came to protect us.”
Another resident confirmed that the warnings were escalated to state and local authorities but were allegedly ignored.
“We reported to the state government and to the local government authorities that terrorists were around us. We begged them to deploy security operatives to clear the forests,” the resident said. https://saharareporters.com/2026/02/05/un-secretary-general-guterres-condemns-terrorists-attack-nigeria-killing-over-170-kwara

Politics › APC Afraid Of Free, Fair Election – ADC Blasts Senate by iwaeda(op): 10:06am On Feb 05 |
The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has accused the APC-led Senate of being afraid of free and fair elections after rejecting key electoral reforms meant to strengthen transparency and integrity in Nigeria’s voting process.
This was contained in a statement signed and released by the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Bolaji Abdulahi on Wednesday.
The party criticized the Senate’s rejection of electronic transmission of election results, saying it signals yet another effort by the APC to manipulate future elections.
Other rejected reforms included the electronic download of voter cards from the INEC website, a reduction in election notice periods, and a shortened timeline for the publication of candidates from 150 days to 60 days.
“The proposed provisions were intended to provide safeguards against electoral abuse and restore voter confidence.
“But the Senate’s action amounts to tampering with the law, creating opportunities for rigging and imposing logistical challenges on INEC that could weaken future elections,” the statement read.
The ADC accused the APC of exploiting its majority in the National Assembly to entrench malpractice, warning that the party’s fear of free and fair elections is driving legislative manipulations.
"By rejecting reforms meant to improve election conduct, the APC has shown its desire to cling to power by all means,” the statement added.
The opposition party urged Nigerians to hold the APC accountable and called on the Conference Committee on the Electoral Act to reject the Senate’s submissions.
It also appealed for amendments that reflect democratic principles and the will of the Nigerian people. https://dailypost.ng/2026/02/05/apc-afraid-of-free-fair-election-adc-blasts-senate-for-rejecting-electronic-transmission/Please
