However, residents noted that the terrorists have not gone far and are urging the Federal and State governments to take urgent action to rescue the girls. Terrorists in the early hours of Monday stormed the Maga Comprehensive Girls’ Secondary School in Kebbi State, abducting an unspecified number of female students and killing at least one staff member. A school guard was also injured during the attack, which occurred around 5:52am. The attackers invaded the school compound while the students were preparing for morning routines, launching their assault with sporadic gunfire, HumAngle reports. SaharaReporters also gathered that the gunmen not only abducted several female students but also left a trail of fear and chaos in their wake. However, residents noted that the terrorists have not gone far and are urging the Federal and State governments to take urgent action to rescue the girls. SaharaReporters earlier reported that terrorists launched a deadly attack on Rogun Village in Kpada District of Patigi Local Government Area, Kwara State, killing two security operatives. A security source told SaharaReporters on Monday that the incident occurred late Sunday night when the terrorists, locally dubbed as bandits, stormed the police outpost in Rogun and opened fire on officers on duty. According to the source, the attackers engaged the security personnel in a fierce gun duel that lasted several minutes. By the time the shooting subsided, two security operatives — a police constabulary and a vigilante officer — had been confirmed dead. https://saharareporters.com/2025/11/17/breaking-terrorists-attack-kebbi-girls-secondary-school-abduct-several-students-kill

WATCH: Residents Lament As Terrorists Strike Again In Kwara Community, Abduct Two Chiefs. SaharaReporters gathered that the victims, identified as Chief Yahaya Majeobaje Owolabi and Baba Oja, Yahaya Adeniyi, were abducted on Friday while travelling to Baba-nla to discuss pressing security concerns with the Babanla monarch. Terrorists, locally dubbed aa bandits, have kidnapped two high-ranking community chiefs in Oreke, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, just as the residents were heeding government assurances to return to their homes. SaharaReporters gathered that the victims, identified as Chief Yahaya Majeobaje Owolabi and Baba Oja, Yahaya Adeniyi, were abducted on Friday while travelling to Baba-nla to discuss pressing security concerns with the Babanla monarch. The incident has left the Oreke community in fear, with most residents fleeing once again as a result of repeated attacks. In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, a handful of residents who had returned to Oreke after being persuaded by Governor AbdulRazaq AbdulRahman, expressed shock and dismay at the audacity of the kidnappers. The governor had assured them that the town was secure, urging residents to return and resume their normal lives. However, the abduction of two of the town’s most respected elders has shattered any sense of safety. “Governor AbdulRahman, we greet you. Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government, Femi Yusuf, we greet you too. You advised us to return after the terrorist attacks. We came back, but as you can see, the town is empty,” one resident pleaded on camera. “Although some of us returned two weeks ago, most elders only came back on Tuesday. We have been planning how to protect the town and secure military presence. But our leaders were kidnapped on their way to Baba-nla.” Residents claim that despite repeated assurances of military and police presence, the town remains dangerously unprotected. “The government claims to have bombed the terrorists, but we see no evidence. We have a police division, but there are no officers stationed here anymore. Soldiers are only in Baba-nla; they patrol and leave. They do not enter the bush where the kidnappers are hiding,” another resident said. The community has been under siege for months, with more than 20 residents reportedly kidnapped and ransoms paid to secure their release. “We cannot go to our farms. We cannot sleep in our homes. Our hunters who tried to search for the abducted chiefs were killed. Yesterday, two of our highest-ranking chiefs, the Babaloja and Majekobaje of Oreke, were kidnapped,” a distraught community member said. “What crime have we committed? We are pleading with the government, with President Tinubu and our Local Government Chairman, to intervene. Our town is under siege, and there is no one to protect us.” The ordeal has left residents frustrated and disillusioned. A man, wearing a red shirt, recounted spending three months and a week in captivity. "We are tired. I was kidnapped and spent three months and a week with the kidnappers before I was released. Please help us. There is no one left in our community. People have fled for safety because of the terrorism and kidnappings. "More than 20 people from Oreke have been kidnapped, and we have been paying ransom to secure their release. One of our elders paid N35million for his freedom. "They abducted the Naibi Imam of Oreke, yet the government is still asking us to return to the community. There are no soldiers here. They only deployed soldiers to Baba-nla and Oke Ode. There is no single security presence in Oreke, and terrorists continue to target us. "On November 14, they kidnapped two of our high chiefs. What crime have we committed? We are pleading with the government to come to our aid. We can’t go to our farms. We can’t sleep in our homes. "They have kidnapped the Babaloja of Oreke and the Majekobaje of Oreke. Our hunters went searching but could not find them," he added. Stakeholders children involvement Residents of Isale Oja allege that the children of prominent and influential individuals are behind much of the criminal activity in the area. A female resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the community has become unsafe due to the involvement of these privileged youths in drugs and illegal activities. “One of the main problems we have here is that children of well-known people are involved,” she said. She explained that most fights, robberies, and disturbances are orchestrated by these youths, who lead rival factions and often evade justice through their parents’ influence. “When you hear of crime or fighting here and there, it is usually their children who are involved. They act as ringleaders, heading different groups. How can crime be stopped if children are arrested and their parents use every means to secure their release?” she added. The resident recalled several instances when police raided Isale Oja and discovered firearms that shocked locals. “We have seen police raids uncover guns that we usually only see on television or in the hands of officers. How do they even get these weapons? If they get arrested today, they will be released a few days later. Sometimes, when the police cannot apprehend them, they simply leave the area for a while and return once everyone has forgotten about the case,” she said. Drug abuse fuels mental health crisis A consultant psychiatrist at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Dr. Adebusola Ogunmodede, while speaking with Sunday PUNCH, warned that drug abuse has profound negative effects on the minds of victims, contributing to a rise in mental health disorders across communities. “Drug abuse has serious consequences for the mind, including an increased risk of developing depression, anxiety, and psychotic disorders,” she said. She explained that recent studies indicate that frequent cannabis use can heighten the likelihood of developing anxiety- and depression-related disorders. “For instance, studies now reveal that daily or near-daily cannabis use over time can increase an individual’s chances of developing anxiety- and depression-related disorders. We also know that depression is the most common mental disorder associated with suicide globally,” she said. Ogunmodede noted that other substances, including cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine, have been linked to psychosis. She stressed that addiction itself is now considered a brain disease, adding that even without directly increasing the risk of mental illnesses, addiction is associated with emotional disturbances. “The impact on the community is an increasing population with psychological illnesses and behavioural disturbances. This affects everyday life, strains relationships, and disrupts social order,” she added. A council’s endless war against drug abuse The Chairman of Agege Local Government, Ganiyu Obasa, addressing the alarming rise in drug use in the area, affirmed his commitment to tackling drug abuse and insecurity. “We have held meetings with peace and security stakeholders, and we constantly urge our people: if you see something, report it. Don’t hide information. Peace and security are closely linked to drug abuse, which is widespread in our community. It destroys lives and communities,” he told New Telegraph in an interview. Obasa added that the council has reached out to the NDLEA zonal office in Ikoyi for support. “They have conducted raids and sensitisation exercises in the communities. We are also collaborating with the police to find lasting solutions to the problem,” he said. Authorities unreachable Despite multiple calls and messages, Sunday PUNCH was unable to reach the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the NDLEA Lagos State Commander, Abubakar Wali, to speak on the menace of drugs in this Lagos suburb and enforcement efforts. |
